Scarpetta (Kay Scarpetta)
From America’s #1 bestselling crime writers comes the extraordinary new Kay Scarpetta novel.
Leaving behind her private forensic pathology practice in Charleston, South Carolina, Kay Scarpetta accepts an assignment in New York City, where the NYPD has asked her to examine an injured man on Bellevue Hospital’s psychiatric prison ward. The handcuffed and chained patient, Oscar Bane, has specifically asked for her, and when she literally has her gloved hands on him, he begins to talk—and the story he has to tell turns out to be one of the most bizarre she has ever heard.
The injuries, he says, were sustained in the course of a murder . . . that he did not commit. Is Bane a criminally insane stalker who has fixed on Scarpetta? Or is his paranoid tale true, and it is he who is being spied on, followed and stalked by the actual killer? The one thing Scarpetta knows for certain is that a woman has been tortured and murdered—and more violent deaths will follow. Gradually, an inexplicable and horrifying truth emerges: Whoever is committing the crimes knows where his prey is at all times. Is it a person, a government? And what is the connection between the victims?
In the days that follow, Scarpetta; her forensic psychologist husband, Benton Wesley; and her niece, Lucy, who has recently formed her own forensic computer investigation firm in New York, will undertake a harrowing chase through cyberspace and the all-too-real streets of the city—an odyssey that will take them at once to places they never knew, and much, much too close to home.
Throughout, Cornwell delivers shocking twists and turns, and the kind of cutting-edge technology that only she can provide. Once again, she proves her exceptional ability to entertain and enthrall.

How Not to Die: Surprising Lessons on Living Longer, Safer, and Healthier from America's Favorite Medical Examiner

WHEN THIS DOCTOR TALKS, YOU SHOULD LISTEN.
Thousands of people make an early exit each year and arrive on medical examiner Jan Garavaglia’s table. What is particularly sad about this is that many of these deaths could easily have been prevented. Although Dr. Garavaglia, or Dr. G, as she’s known to many, could not tell these individuals how to avoid their fates, we can benefit from her experience and profound insight into the choices we make each day.
In
How Not to Die, Dr. G acts as a medical detective to identify the often-unintentional ways we harm our bodies, then shows us how to use that information to live better and smarter. She provides startling tips on how to make wise choices so that we don’t have to see her, or someone like her, for a good, long time.
• In “Highway to the Morgue,” we learn the one commonsense safety tip that can prevent deadly accidents—and the reason you should never drive with the windows half open
• “Code Blue” teaches us how to increase our chances of leaving the hospital alive—and how to insist that everyone caring for you practice the easiest hygiene method around
• “Everyday Dangers” informs us why neat freaks live longer—and the best ways to stay safe in a car during a lightning storm
Using anecdotes from her cases and a liberal dose of humor, Dr. G gives us her prescription for living a healthier, better, longer life—and unlike many doctors’ orders, this one is surprisingly easy to follow.

Book of the Dead (Kay Scarpetta, No. 15)

From America's # 1 bestselling crime writer comes the extraordinary new Dr. Kay Scarpetta novel.
The "book of the dead" is the morgue log, a ledger in which all cases are entered by hand. For Kay Scarpetta, however, it is about to take on a new meaning. Fresh from her bruising battle with a psychopath in Florida, Scarpetta decides it's time for a change of pace, not only personally and professionally but geographically. Moving to the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina, she opens a unique private forensic pathology practice, one in which she and her colleagues-including Pete Marino and her niece, Lucy-offer expert crime-scene investigation and autopsy services to communities lacking local access to modern, competent death investigation technology.
It seems like an ideal situation, until the new battles start-with local politicians, with entrenched interests, with someone whose covert attempts at sabotage are clearly meant to run Scarpetta out of town. And that's before the murders and other violent deaths even begin.
A young man from a well-known family jumps off a water tower. A woman is found ritualistically murdered in her multimillion-dollar beach home. The body of an abused young boy is discovered dumped in a desolate marsh. Meanwhile, in distant New England, problems with a prominent patient at a Harvard-affiliated psychiatric hospital begin to hint at interconnections that are as hard to imagine as they are horrible.
Kay Scarpetta has dealt with many brutal and unusual crimes before, but never a string of them as baffling, or as terrifying, as the ones confronting her now. Before she is through, that book of the dead will contain many names-and the pen may be poised to write in her own.
The first name in forensics. The last name in suspense. Once again, Patricia Cornwell proves her exceptional ability to entertain and enthrall.

Open Question: Tips and things to say while presenting a presentation about modern day burial requirements??? ?
MY teacher said i just cant read off the slides so I memorized them and I would liek to know some additional things I could say to make it more entertaining.. thanks. heres my slides below
slide 1- Sudden/unexpected death at home or other private residence when a physician is not present should be reported to the local law enforcement authority immediately do not disturb body
When police arrive they will notify the proper authorities for removal of the body.
Depending on circumstances of death, it may be required that the remains be first taken to and/or released by the County Medical Examiner
if death at home is anticipated, normally the patient is under Hospice care. When the death occurs Hospice should be contacted.
slide 2- Embalming is required by State law if the remains are not cremated or buried within 48 hours of death
Embalming will impede but will not prevent the natural decomposition of a body
The 48-hour period is measured immediately at the time of death
no exception under current law from embalming requirements for refrigeration, nor is a funeral home required to have refrigeration available
most funeral homes will require and have the right to require that embalming take place when there is a public visitation
you will be required to pay for that embalming
You do not have to pay for embalming that is not required by either the funeral home or state law and that you have not authorized.
slide 3- Cremations may take place legally only after permission has been received from the County Medical Examiner to ensure that no criminal action is concealed by the destruction of physical evidence
Embalming is required if the cremation does not take place within 48 hours of death or if deceased had certain communicable diseases
funeral home and crematory will require express written authorization for cremation from the next-of-kin
slide 4- Caskets or Containers are not required by State law for burial and caskets are not required for cremation
crematories and cemeteries usually have minimum requirements
Models or photographs of caskets and containers available for sale must be on display in funeral homes with individual prices clearly marked
owner or employee of a funeral home may not imply that a casket is protective when that is not true
normal casket will impede but will not prevent the natural decomposition of a body

Open Question: im writing an english essay and im describing the way a character it made?
What is of interest to the examiner is not that you know what the character is
like but, rather, that you understand how he is created by the author and how the
author manipulates your response to the character.
The success of the novel depends on vour involvement with the characters and
the author will be at pains to make you admire some and dislike others- He may
also deliberately mislead you about the real nature of a character until the end of the novel.
Your impression will be formed by examining all the aspects of character:
- appearance - which may influence the fate and fortunes of the character in the
novel
- 'background? - which may influence language/behaviour, attitudes/ fortunes
- the opinion of others - hostile or friendly- will build up the picture of the character
- the various roles which the character performs in the novel may reveal a
different persona for each.
Remember that the character has been deliberately created by the author and is a
composite of Qualities that the author has observed in those around him. As
such, while the character has his own 'existence' in the novel, he also represents
a type about whom the author wants to make a point. Identify the type.
Similarly, the things which the author causes to happen to that character will reveal
something about the author's understanding of the world. Does he believe that we have control over our lives? Or are we the victims of our situation, or of the manipulative forces around us? Are we helpless puppets controlled by neutral/malign/benevolent forces?
WHAT SORT OF THINGS CAN I SAY ABOUT THAT IN RELATION TO MY CHARACTER? HE'S A CHAV, LOWER-CLASS, HOOLIGAN, UNEMPLOYED.... how can i word that and incorporate those points above?!

Open Question: 15 year-old girl kills two men in three days! Your thoughts?
I knew girls were getting more and more violent, but this is ridiculous.
I know the feminists will assume that the guys must've "molested" or "abused" her in some way... her motive was that she actually shot and killed a guy in a botched-robbery attempt, and then thought another guy was going to talk to police about it, so she stabbed him over 40 times, then mutilated him and put his chopped-up remains in a garbage bag.
Your thoughts?

NEW YORK -
With her slight frame and big grin, Sharell Butler still looks like a child. But the 15-year-old has been charged as an adult with killing two men over three days, including one whose dismembered remains were found in a garbage bag.
Butler pleaded not guilty over the weekend to second-degree murder in the deaths of 24-year-old Christopher Umpierre on Dec. 19 and 22-year-old John Hopkins-Drago on Dec. 21. She was being held without bail Monday.
Her attorney, Xavier Donaldson, referred to her as "just a kid" and said she is scared. Her father, James Butler, told the Daily News of New York that he believes his daughter is innocent.
Police say Sharrell Butler and others stabbed Hopkins-Drago at an apartment in the Bronx, perhaps as many as 40 times. A superintendent found the dismembered body stuffed in a garbage can outside a building the same day he was killed.
Hopkins-Drago, who had been adopted from a Russian orphanage by a suburban couple, was estranged from his family and had a history of drug arrests, his brother, Patrick Hopkins-Drago, told the Journal News. He had been living on the streets but had not been reported missing.
According to his brother, the victim was apparently trying to turn his life around this fall, hoping to enroll in classes at Westchester Community College outside New York City.
"He didn't deserve what he got," his mother, Ann Marie Hopkins, told the Daily News. "He's just an innocent kid."
Butler is also facing charges of criminal possession of a weapon and criminally negligent homicide in Hopkins-Drago's slaying. Prosecutors say she had a loaded gun at the time of the stabbing.
Officials said Monday that Butler may have killed Hopkins-Drago because she thought he might talk about the death of Umpierre, who was shot to death after a botched robbery at his apartment in the Bronx.
Authorities believe she and another suspect intended to rob Umpierre, but no one else had been charged in that slaying as of Monday.
Butler's nickname was Lady Red, which authorities say may refer to the notorious Bloods street gang. Butler's attorney denied that his client was involved with gang activity.
Four other suspects were in custody Monday in connection with both deaths, including a 23-year-old man suspected of hindering prosecution.
Hopkins-Drago was killed in the 23-year-old's apartment, but it wasn't clear whether the man was there at the time. Officials said he may have tampered with crime scene evidence. It also wasn't clear Monday what roles the other three might have played in the killings.
Do you think she'll get a slap-on-the-wrist for being a female?

Resolved Question: IGCSE English: I SERIOUSLY need help!?
I'm reading through the mark scheme of an English Past Paper. The question was to find a phrase from a certain sentence that shows the character was in a hurry. In the Mark Scheme, the examiners were instructed to deduct marks if the candidate had been "lifting".
My question is: What the hell is lifting? Does it mean copying from the text?

Open Question: is there any reason why I can't use antigenicity prediction software to generate peptides for screening serum?
My examiner says this type of software is usually used for designing peptides to immunize and generate antibodies, and "never used" for screening serum (for antibodies generated by DNA immunization), and that therefore this approach is "patently wrong". Can anyone explain why it is wrong, or point me in the direction of a published instance of this use? Many thanks!
