Resolved Question: how do you go about nominating someone for a special award?
I know someone who is arranging a large and ambitious project - all proceeds to charity. It has taken a year of hard work on his part to get the whole thing organised etc (and he works full time!) - the project has potential to take off and be a successful fund-raiser for other charities nationally - I would like to nominate him for a special recognition award of some sort - any ideas what a suitable thing would be and how I would go about doing it? he lives in the South UK

Voting Question: I am for information about the value & sales potential of oil paintings by Clayton Turner. Any suggestions?
Clayton Turner is a nationally acclaimed western artist who also happens to be a quadriplegic. A diving accident in the Valley at the age of 15 permanently damaged his spinal cord and left him paralyzed below his neck. It wasn't long, however, until he was holding a pen in his teeth and learning to write with his head. Drawing came next. His talent in art was a natural one and it wasn't long before he received encouragement and recognition for his work. Gerald Haslam used his drawings to illustrate California Heartland [see item # 90]. Many famous people admired and purchased his art including John Wayne and Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush. In 1978 he received a life achievement award from the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles.

Voting Question: What/who would you expect to see re: editorial and advertising in a post NYE report called Breaking The Habit?
Hello all. I'm publishing an exclusive 16-page report that's being distributed nationally in the UK via The Guardian newspaper on 1st January 2009. It's called Breaking The Habit, and, quite naturally, we're planning to look at the concept of new year's resolutions. What kind of editorial points would YOU - as potential readers - expect to see in a report of this kind and what potential advertisers and sponsors would you recommend targeting in terms of contextual relevance. (I.e. gym memberships; banks, and finance restructuring post Christmas; quit-smoking vehicles, etc.). Any suggestions and opinions would be hugely valued. Thank you.

Resolved Question: How much corruption is acceptable?
Barack Obama helped secure a $25,000 grant for the Blue Gargoyle in August 2000, an organization that was headed by Capers C. Funnye, Jr., Michelle Obama?s first cousin once removed.
Obama as the Illinois Senator reportedly received a home loan of $1.32 million at a rate of 5.625 percent, although the average going rate on that day according to two different surveys was between 5.93 and 6 percent. Unlike what was reportedly available for the general consumer, this special below-market "super super jumbo" loan was secured without an origination fee or discount points. (Questions about the mortgage were first raised by The Washington Post.)
Barack Obama?s ?squeaky clean? reputation is again being tarnished by shady entrepreneurs who have supported him financially, this time a convicted Iraqi billionaire who funneled millions to the Illinois senator in 2005.
A British newspaper has published a lengthy story on the scandal, which connects the Democratic presidential candidate and his indicted longtime Syrian financial supporter (currently on trial for corruption) with one of Britain?s richest people, a criminal Iraqi guru named Nadhmi Auchi.
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has blasted Hillary Clinton for withholding her First Lady records while he repeatedly ignores requests to release his own lengthy state legislative records.
Obama served eight years in the Illinois State Senate and several media outlets, as well as Judicial Watch, have tried through public requests to obtain his records to no avail.
The Illinois Office of the Secretary of State states it doesn?t have the senator?s records and that it has ?received no requests from Senator Obama to archive any records formerly in his possession.?
In other words, Obama could easily make his state legislator records available to the public by having them archived but has chosen not to. Instead, he has offered several stories relating to the documents since announcing his presidential candidacy.
Barack Obama finally was forced to answer questions about his close ties to a domestic terrorist who planted bombs in the Capitol, Pentagon and other government buildings to protest U.S. policy.
During the nationally televised debate in Pennsylvania, Obama was cornered into addressing his decades-long relationship with William Ayers, a Vietnam-era radical and former fugitive from U.S. justice who has proudly admitted setting the bombs in the 1970s.
Ayers, a professor at a public university in Chicago, was a member of the domestic terrorist group Weather Underground and he has publicly said that he doesn?t regret setting the bombs and that his violent group actually ?didn?t do enough.? In fact, he still proudly sports a tattoo on his neck featuring the rainbow and lightning weatherman logo that appeared on letters taking responsibility for the bombings.
Ayers and his wife, a fellow Weather Underground terrorist, have long supported and collaborated with Obama, donating money to his campaign and hosting fundraising events at their home. The Democratic presidential candidate and aging radical hang out in the same political and social circles, live in the same Chicago neighborhood and for years served on the board of a Chicago nonprofit.
According the August 8 edition of The New York Times, Accountable America, a liberal group, plans to send a letter ?to confront donors to conservative groups, hoping to create a chilling effect that will dry up contributions? The warning letter is intended as a first step, alerting donors who might be considering giving to right-wing groups to a variety of potential dangers, including legal trouble, public exposure and watchdog groups digging through their lives.
The group is also hoping to be able to respond if an outside conservative group broadcasts a television advertisement attacking Senator Barack Obama, or another Democratic candidate, by running commercials exposing the donors behind the advertisements.?
Attempts to intimidate individuals from participating in the presidential campaign can be a violation of federal law. A key federal civil rights law (42 U.S.C. § 1985(3)), popularly known as the Ku Klux Klan Act, may be applicable if ?two or more persons conspire to prevent by force, intimidation, or threat, any citizen who is lawfully entitled to vote, from giving his support or advocacy in a legal manner, toward or in favor of the election of any lawfully qualified person as an elector for President or Vice President, or as a Member of Congress of the United States; or to injure any citizen in person or property on account of such support or advocacy.?
The chairman of an Islamic ?charity? shut down by the U.S. government for funding Middle Eastern terrorists has dedicated himself to raising money for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.
With his Ohio-based terrorist funding operation closed, Hatem El-Hady has committed to raising substantial funds for

Danger in disguise: candy-flavor drugs
Strawberry meth hasn't hit locally in a big way, but police are on lookout
What if someone had the brilliant notion to make "the world's most dangerous drug" sweet tasting by adding candy flavors and making it look like Pop Rocks? Well, someone did and it might be catching on. As a father of a fifth grader, I was naturally concerned when I heard about the newest form of methamphetamine, known as "candy-meth." An e-mail has been circulating on the Web, alleging that candy-flavored meth is being passed out to kids at elementary schools. To verify evidence to support the claims in the e-mail go to Snopes.com .
(see link http://www.snopes.com/horrors/drugs/candymeth.asp),
Candy meth is a potential threat to anyone tricked into thinking that it?s not harmful.
Parents need to be informed on what kind of drugs are out there. Furthermore, parents need to talk to their children about the present dangers of drugs.
Here are the basic facts that exist regarding candy-flavored meth:
- candy meth is most commonly flavored with strawberry and is known on the street as "Strawberry Quick."
- other flavors may include chocolate, peanut butter, cola, cherry, grape, and orange
- tell your children to never accept candy from strangers, or even friends if received from someone else
-meth is especially dangerous for kids, with symptoms of anxiety, paranoia, and increased heart rate
I am sure we can expect it in the future as trends tend to move through the larger cities," said Deputy Chief Julian Bernal, head of Dallas' narcotics division.
The Drug Enforcement Administration's Dallas office has not encountered the drug, but local agents are on the lookout, said spokeswoman Terri K. Wyatt.
"These are evil drug dealers who are marketing to kids," Special Agent Wyatt said.
Local bust
At 2 a.m. Tuesday, a Lake Worth officer spotted a man sleeping inside a Pontiac Firebird parked at a Sonic restaurant on State Highway 199. When police searched Ronnie N. Smith's car, they found more than 400 grams of strawberry meth in two large plastic bags, in addition to various prescription drugs, several stolen credit cards and driver's licenses and about $1,800 in cash.
The pink crystals in the large bags tested positive for meth, said Lake Worth police Capt. Dave Tatsak. While officers weren't inclined to give the stuff a taste test ? doing so would be illegal ? it "definitely smelled like strawberry," he said.
Mr. Smith, 45, of Jacksboro, was arrested on drug possession charges and was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. He requested an attorney and refused to talk to investigators, leaving them with no idea where he got the Strawberry Quick or what his intentions with it were.
On April 11, a Fort Worth police officer found the drug during a traffic stop. About 5 p.m., the officer pulled over a Ford Explorer on a traffic violation in the 2300 block of Ridgmar Plaza and found a 20-year-old man in possession of some prescription Tylenol for which he had no prescription.
On the way to jail, the officer saw that the man was squirming, and once at the jail, the officer looked under the back seat and found a cigarette wrapper. It contained about a gram of "pink-colored, crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamines," also known as Strawberry Quick, the officer wrote in the report.
"Depending on what the manufacturers use to cut the meth down, it can have various coloration, including pink," said Lt. Dean Sullivan, a Fort Worth police spokesman. "But our officers watch the TV news, too, so the catch phrase 'Strawberry Quick' did appear in at least one report."
He said he knew of no other accounts of the drug in Fort Worth.
About a dozen other local police agencies contacted said they had not come across the drug.
Growing concern
Concern over strawberry meth spiked nationally in February, when the Nevada Department of Public Safety's special investigations unit issued a police bulletin alerting law enforcement colleagues that the Carson City Sheriff's Department had seized some of the substance in late January.
The bulletin noted that the drug first turned up in Sacramento, Calif., where dealers were cooking meth with strawberry-flavored drink mix to cut down on the drug's bitter taste when snorted.
"If meth is cut with something after it is cooked, it loses its potency," said Special Agent Wyatt in Dallas. "With this, it's cooked into it. It's not diluted. It retains its potency."
Arkansas police also have reported finding strawberry meth, and the DEA in Washington, D.C., reports that a similar pinkish-red crystalline drug has turned up in Washington state, Idaho, New Mexico, Missouri and Minnesota.
Two weeks ago, the rise in reports prompted Se

Resolved Question: Guess who called Obama an "immature puppet" who knew little of foreign policy?
Obama an 'immature puppet', says Kenya
August 29 2006 at 03:29PM
Kenya hit back on Tuesday at blistering criticism of government corruption by visiting United States Senator Barack Obama, dismissing the lawmaker of Kenyan descent as "immature" and an opposition "puppet".
A day after Obama used a nationally televised address to deliver a stinging attack on rampant graft that he said had plunged Kenya into "crisis", government spokesperson Alfred Mutua questioned the senator's intelligence.
"It is now clear that he was speaking out of ignorance and does not understand Kenyan politics. We earlier thought he was mature in his assessment of Kenyan and African politics," Mutua told AFP.
"But we forgive him because it is his first time in the senate and he is yet to mature into understanding issues of foreign policy," he said.

'he is yet to mature into understanding issues of foreign policy'
Obama, who capped the public schedule of his triumphant return to his father's homeland with the critical speech on Monday, was on a private family visit to a Kenyan wildlife reserve on Tuesday and not available for comment.
Mutua said the junior senator from Illinois, the lone African-American in the Senate and potential Democratic Party presidential nominee, had been played as a pawn by the Kenyan opposition ahead of elections set for next year.
"It is very clear that the senator has been used as a puppet to perpetuate opposition politics, which is very shocking because he is supposed to be an intelligent man," he said.
Obama, the son of a Kenyan goat herder-turned-government economist, has been given a rock star reception by hundreds of thousands here who have turned out to greet him on his third visit to the east African nation.
In his speech to faculty and students at the University of Nairobi on Monday, which was carried live on all local television stations, Obama rebuked President Mwai Kibaki's government for failing to address corruption.
'The freedom that you fought so hard to win... is in jeopardy'
"The freedom that you fought so hard to win... is in jeopardy," he said to applause from the standing-room only crowd.
"It is being threatened by corruption."
"Here in Kenya, it is a crisis, a crisis that is robbing an honest people of the opportunities that they have fought for, the opportunity they deserve," he said, urging citizens to demand accountability from Kibaki's government.
Kibaki swept to power on a reform platform in 2002 elections but has come under heavy criticism for failing to meet anti-graft pledges and his government has been rocked by two major corruption scandals. - Sapa-AFP

Resolved Question: Where can I find information on green collar jobs that are appropriate for disabled people?
I'm giving a 90 minutes presentation at a conference on this topic to primarily community members, university stakeholders, and potential employers. I am exploring the various angles one could approach this topic and am looking for existing programs or organizations that are already addressing this issue, particularly in San Diego, California, and nationally. Any concrete figures would be especially helpful for the "bean counters" in the audience!
Please email me if you have possible angles to the presentation since that wasn't my question.
Of course, having multiple disabilities myself, I am acutely aware that there is no acceptable rule of thumb to determine appropriate placement in the workforce.
What I am looking for is people who are knowledgeable about disabilities and know of successfully placed individuals in green collar type of careers purely for illustrative purpose during my talk. It is much more powerful if we can put a face to the line of argument why employers SHOULD hire disabled employees (in addition to diversity & fiscal benefits).
Therefore, my vote goes to the ILC answer which answered my original question. Thanks everybody.
That said, there ARE some placements that would be inappropriate. An example would be a profound deaf person assigned to work alone as a frontline service worker in the HVAC industry where the ability to identify particular sounds is critical. The demand is insanely high but not a practical placement for a deaf person. It is my desire to highlight WHICH one likely represents the BEST fit then conclude that almost all kinds of disabilities would be able to do all kinds of work.

Resolved Question: Did Palin & McCain lie in their speeches?
I heard both speeches and then read some news articles and trying to figure out why they seem to blantantly lie..Is this true?
Palin's speech:
PALIN: ?I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending ... and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress ?thanks but no thanks? for that Bridge to Nowhere.?
THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a ?bridge to nowhere.?
PALIN: ?There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it?s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform ? not even in the state senate.?
THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.
PALIN: ?The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes, raise payroll taxes, raise investment income taxes, raise the death tax, raise business taxes, and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars.?
THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama?s plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain?s plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.
Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks, mainly for poor workers and the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families.
He also would raise income taxes, capital gains and dividend taxes on the wealthiest. He would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year would see taxes rise.
MCCAIN: ?She?s been governor of our largest state, in charge of 20 percent of America?s energy supply ... She?s responsible for 20 percent of the nation?s energy supply. I?m entertained by the comparison and I hope we can keep making that comparison that running a political campaign is somehow comparable to being the executive of the largest state in America,? he said in an interview with ABC News? Charles Gibson.
THE FACTS: McCain?s phrasing exaggerates both claims. Palin is governor of a state that ranks second nationally in crude oil production, but she?s no more ?responsible? for that resource than President Bush was when he was governor of Texas, another oil-producing state. In fact, her primary power is the ability to tax oil, which she did in concert with the Alaska Legislature. And where Alaska is the largest state in America, McCain could as easily have called it the 47th largest state ? by population.
MCCAIN: ?She?s the commander of the Alaska National Guard. ... She has been in charge, and she has had national security as one of her primary responsibilities,? he said on ABC.
THE FACTS: While governors are in charge of their state guard units, that authority ends whenever those units are called to actual military service. When guard units are deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, for example, they assume those duties under ?federal status,? which means they report to the Defense Department, not their governors. Alaska?s national guard units have a total of about 4,200 personnel, among the smallest of state guard organizations.
McCain's speech:
MCCAIN: "We lost their trust when instead of freeing ourselves from a dangerous dependence on foreign oil, both parties and Senator Obama passed another corporate welfare bill for oil companies. We lost their trust, when we valued our power over our principles."
THE FACTS: Yes, Obama voted for a 2005 energy bill backed by Bush that included billions in subsidies for oil and natu
natural gas production. McCain opposed the bill on grounds it included unnecessary tax breaks for the oil industry. But Obama has said he supported the legislation because it provided money for renewable energy. Obama did vote for an effort to strip the legislation of the oil and gas industry tax breaks. When that failed, he voted for the overall measure.
MCCAIN: "When a public school fails to meet its obligations to students, parents deserve a choice in the education of their children. And I intend to give it to them. Some may choose a better public school. Some may choose a private one. Many will choose a charter school. But they will have that choice and their children will have that opportunity."
THE FACTS: Despite his goal of giving parents choice in the schools their children attend, he is not proposing a federal voucher program that would provide public money for private school tuition.
