Open Question: What are the guidelines for winter riding?
Hello, So, I have had a vast experiance with riding, I have almost become a riding hobo in a way - where I ride when I can, on whatever horse that I can, which involves just hoping on to any horse at any time and not falling off. Anyhow, with my last jumping on experiance we went riding in the snow, which as a sheltered barn brat, I had always ridden inside during the winter, or not at all. I loved it btw, we chased deer, stomped through snow. I was curious in continuing winter riding, most of my ride are with the owners of the horses, so not really me soloing it exept during the spring time and summer in arenas and such. BUT after that little life history, I was curious of the guidelines that horse owners and riders should follow when riding in the winter. Keep in mind, I live in MN and WI, so we have a substantial amount of snow. (more...)

Open Question: How do you kindly tell someone that you don't want to get together?
A girl at the barn I ride with, can be very annoying... she is a year younger than me. One day I texted a friend while at the barn, she appeared around the corner and was all excited and wanted my number and she gave me hers. I gave her my number because you can't really say no. Now she texts me all of the time! At first she texted me once, like a question so I answered it but now I don't have the excuse of ignoring her texts saying"i don't have texting" so i reply to most of them, ignore some, but i reply shortly and kind of terse, but she doesn't really get it that I don't want to talk! So this morning she asked I wanted to hang out with her! I don't! at all! But i really don't want to hurt her feelings either! what can i say to tell her I dont want to hang out, but nicely? ilikehelpingpeople97- what? no, its a horse-barn! what are you talking about? Open Question: Running my Walker Stallion with my mares.?
I have bred my two TWH Mares to my Stallion and have been running them together for 2 months. They get along well in open pasture but my concern is when they congregate in the barn. They can get testy and kick. Should I separate my stallion? When I do he paces the fence line constantly. I have another mare (boss mare) that I keep away from him do to the fact they aren't best of friends. She is ran by herself because she is 7 months preg with different stallion. (more...)

Open Question: Turnout Trouble...HELP!!?
Okay, So I have an 8 stall barn and 5 of my personal horses. I recently made a boarding agreement up with a good friend of mine and she is boarding her 2 horses here. She has a welsh/cob pony gelding named jinx who is soooo sweet and is great friends with my yearling and an OTTB mare. right now, I have 2 large pastures (about 5 acres a piece) that are fenced and a 10 acre field/pasture that is not really anything as of now...will be fenced in the spring more than likely for more pasture. I also have a smaller "single horse" pasture that I use for my competition horses who have back shoes etc. and are not turned out in a group. two of my horses (a 13 year old buckskin, QH gelding, Kobi and my Oldenburg yearling, Simon) go out in one of my 2, 5 acre pastures. My 3 competition horses go in the smaller pasture for 6 hour a piece each day. Anyway, my "problem" as of now is my 2 pastures are "connected". Their is a fence between them...that is all. I guess I wasn't thinking when I built the fence as their is no electric/space between the two pastures. So because my yearling is quite valuable I do not want to put him out with the mare since he is in the "curios" phase and I fear him getting kicked. Plus If anything happens to one of my horses it was well...one of my horses and if anything happens to one of here....it was hers, she cannot come to me. Just easier :) So him and my QH are in one pasture while the mare and the pony are in the other. The mare is in heat (I used to board at her barn and it seems like she was ALWAYS in heat) and she sits along the fence line teasing the crap out of my two horses!!! My QH site there ALL day while she backs up to him etc. I honestly don't even think he walked over to the water tank all day!! I mean him and my yearling are HUGE water drinkers, love to play, and graze all day...normally. Now that she sits there and teases them all day I don't think I saw them drink all day. (obviously I was not there the entire time they were out, but I checked on them every hour at least and they were in the corner or VERY close to it, which is far from the water tank) I'm also afraid she may kick and hurt one of my horses or get her foot stuck, or my horse may try to mount her over the fence (stupid, but I wouldn't put it past him) and get hurt as well. My QH is also becoming very aggressive towards my yearling over it and that is so unlike him. I don't want any of my horses to get hurt over something so silly. I also don;t want an aggressive, 16 hh yearling (almost 2) on my hands. He is going to be huge...the nicer, the better, I know it is nature but he IS a gelding and there is NOTHING he can do so they need to move on and stop tearing up my pastures.... Does anyone have any recommendations to get them to just back off? I know I should just get electric fence and I plan to but does it need to be wired underground?? What kind of electric/hot fence etc. do you recommend? Which is the easiest to install (i.e. not underground would be awesome) If anyone has ANY recommendations they would be greatly appreciated. I also considered turning them out at separate times but I want my horses (all of them) to be out as much as possible! it is cold here. Indiana. I know it is not THAT cold but im from florida so this is a little new to me 0:) but that is what I will probably end up doing. anyone else?! haha all the answers are great! I will deff try electic tape! It is just irritating to see my horses not enjoying being horse over a girl! silly boys ;) (more...)

Open Question: What would the approximate cost be to build a pole barn with a full size basketball court inside?

Open Question: Help with "crazy" lesson pony!?
I know it's a long question, but please bare with me! Last month my friend, a fairly experienced rider, started leasing a pony at the stable where I ride. He's a 10 year old pony (looks like a quarter pony cross...Icelandic, maybe??) and my barn recently bought him to replace their "first lessons horse", who was 35 and needed to retire. I don't know much about his history, except that he was at a girl scout summer camp for a while. At the girl scout camp I went to , though I don't know if it was the same as the one he came from, the horses were all very..well...oddly trained. To ask them to walk, we "gave them a hug and a kiss" as in squeezed and kissed to them. We trotted a little, but our group wasn't aloud to canter at all. I imagine he mostly walked and went out on the trails. Also, they were kept primarily in a large pasture. Amigo seemed very calm, and lesson-horse-like, he had bad ground manners, and gave the younger kid trouble with picking up his hooves, and standing sideways while tied, but he was calm. Any way, now to the question: This horse, Amigo, is a good horse, and has beginners walking and trotting on him, but my bud has been working on getting him to canter. He usually was VERY resistant, and would only canter when you took him down the middle of the arena, an hated loping on the rail. It made sense to use though, seeing as the camp horses I had met were thought to walk on the voice command we used for a lope, and he probably hadn't done it in a while, and might have been sore. anyway, we decided to keep working on it. So, any way, the last while, he;s been kind of odd! He's been bucking lots, and reared once! It's winter, so it could be weather...but the stable owner was STUNNED that he would act that way! Now, two days ago, there was a reining horse galloping, and he must have been excited by it, because we finally got Amigo to canter! he did buck some, and kick, but did it, and he didn't seem a bit upset about it! So today, she rode him again. he was great while there was another horse in the arena, but as soon as he left, he went crazy! he started galloping full speed! She tried an emergency one-rein stop, witch worked, but as soon as he was stopped, he took off again! He galloped 6 laps before she finally got him to stop. Then, she got off, and took him into the round pen, to get off the rest of his energy (he still had LOTS) and cool him down. As soon as she took the halter off, he bolted, and ripped around for forever, bucking and kicking. Finally, she stopped him, cooled him down, and the now white with lathered sweat Amigo went back to his pen. So, because he was probably kept in pasture for a while, do you think he might be herdy? Could that be why he acted so crazy when the other horse left? And why do you think he's doing this? My bud is fine handling him, and doesn't think much of it, but I'm kinda worried...I mean this is a LESSON horse! Why do you think he's acting like that? How do we fix it? The vet looked at him, and said he was one of the healthiest horses he's ever seen..so I don't think It's pain. btw, he likes to pee (or pretend to a LOT, sometimes 10+ times per ride! Like I said, as soon as they realized this problem they called the vet, who checked, mostly for reasons he might be urinating. And, btw, I know It's not his tack, because he came with his own tack from the camp. (more...)
