Open Question: A year out... or not?
Hey Im 18 and currently in my first year of a childcare course - its two years in total. Im due baby at the end of july. Ive decided that I am going to take a year out and then once baby is a year old I will start my second year, and there is a creche at the college which can look after baby while Im studying. I personally think this is the best option for me, because I dont really want to have a baby and then two months later go back to college 5 days a week. I want to spend that first year with my baby. So I just want to hear what you think on this, as some people have said they thats a great idea and some others have said Im stupid. So... Discuss :) Sorry maybe i should of added that my boyfriend has almost finished his training in plumbing, and will be supporting us. And he thinks its the best idea too (more...)

Open Question: Has anyone used FutureMT.com?
I'm becoming a SAHM and my husband is taking an unexpected pay cut. We can't afford the high cost of childcare for me to keep my current job, and I would like to become a medical transcriptionist. I checked this site out with BBB and they are legitimate, but I am concerned about actually finding a job after I make this investment in training. Has anyone had an experience with them, good or bad, they could share? If not, has anyone had a positive experience with another training program that helped them get a job in this field? (more...)

Open Question: Can a person apply for unemployment benefits if a change in working hours negatively affects childcare?
My girlfriend works at an Indian casino. They have pushed her to a 4 p.m.-to-midnight shift. This makes her childcare impossible for her to do and greatly increases daycare costs. Can she receive unemployment benefits if she quits due to these reasons? (more...)

Open Question: Does any one work the graveyard shift at their job?
I just got a position as an aide in a nursing home and I'm really excited about it. With this economy it is just great to have a job. I am married with two kids and have to work out of necessity. Childcare has been an issue for me so I had to get a position where my husband would be home. Twice a week I will work from 12:30 am until 7 am. On the weekends I have two choice. I can work on Saturdays and Sundays from either 4 til midnight or midnight until 8 am. What do you suggest? I'm just wondering how you adjust to the graveyard shift when you have children. I think I will like working when it is quiet. I am a night owl anyway. How do you adjust your sleeping schedule if you work the graveyard shift? Thanks for you answers. Maggie (more...)

Open Question: In finding a child care provider or day care...?
My sons are 20, 18, 4 & 4. I have been at home with the 4 yr old twins since birth, due to daycare costs and they were preemie. I am trying to get back on with my last employer. When the older two were in daycare, almost 20 years ago, I had really no choices. I was a single Mom and got state assistance for their childcare costs and had to take them to a state licensed center where there was an opening. I didn't get to look around at different daycares, just the one they were put in. That daycare was fine, but now that I am older, wiser, re-married and somewhat financially stable, I can seek out a daycare or child care provider of my choosing. We do know we want the two boys to actually be in a scheduled, routined place, with some type of curriculum for learning. I know there are some in home providers that do attempt learning activities, that would be slightly less expensive. I am still looking at paying out half my salary to a licensed daycare. So, any input on in-home providers versus licensed centers? I do know whatever we decide they should go for a week before I actually start work. I am actually returning to work as I planned to get them in a pre-school before kindergarten anyway and I am afraid in today's world I may not have this job opportunity a year from now. (more...)

Open Question: TAX Questions! Please help if you can!?
I am newly married with one kid. My husband is in the Army. Last year I worked for a few months in an office and for another few months as an at-home childcare provider. I guess we'll be filing jointly. Since my hubby's in the Army, and since I was self employed for a while, would it be in our best interest to find a professional tax preparer or do it on our own online? We don't have much money for the professional thing, so if ANYONE knows of a good, cheap company (I have heard H&R Block and Liberty are really expensive) please let me know. Also, has anyone gone through the IRS website and used "FreeFile"? If so, is it easy and do you think we should do it in our situation? Thanks! (more...)

Open Question: Flexible working: what are my rights when returning to work from maternity leave?
I am looking to return to work in Feb and i put my application for flexible working into the HR dept, and they have refused it saying the days i have chose and hours don't fit the business needs. I have advised the reason i have chose these days and hours are due to childcare for my son. She is asking me to work 10-7, but i can only do 9-6. She has also said the days I have requested can't be done. I want to know where i stand because at the minute i will have no choice but to leave the company as no one will be able to look after my child. (more...)
