Questions of Perception: Phenomenology of Architecture
Questions of Perception: Phenomenology of Architecture This new edition of Questions of Perception brings back into print one of the most important architectural theory treatise of recent years. Authored by noted architectural scholars Alberto Pérez-Gómez and Juhani Pallasmaa as well as the preeminent architect Steven Holl, the three separate essays are thematically linked: each one tries to explain the role human perception and phenomenological experience play in architecture. In particular, Holl -- who was named by Time magazine as the most important architect of his generation and the designer of the much-lauded Chapel of St. Ignatius at Seattle University and the highly anticipated Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art addition -- lucidly explicates the importance of intuition in the construction and experience of built space. Holl explains his search for phenomenological experience thus: "To open architecture to questions of perception, we must suspend disbelief, disengage the rational half of the mind, and simply play and explore. Reason and skepticism must yield to a horizon of discovery."

Open Question: Any tips for realistic interior lighting using 3ds max/ viz?
I am working on an interior rendering of a bathroom. I am not so good with getting photo-realistic renderings because I don't have a good understanding of radiosity and logarithmic exposure controls. They both really seem to wash out the rendering, making the colours really pale- is there a way around this? There are so many buttons and gibberish in this programme, I feel like I could make adjustments forever and not understand what is going on. I have the following settings. omni lights with adv. raytrace shadows I have checked off atmospheric, 2 sided and transparent shadows Logarithmic exposure controls are brighness - 60 contrast - 70 mid-tones - .9 physical scale - 1000 radiosity intitial quality- 97.5% help? I wish I could attach an image, please e-mail me if you think you can help and I will send one. Thank you! 3ds max version 9. (more...)

Open Question: ADD, ADHD in adults? I'm curious.?
I've always been hyperactive in a very quiet way, it's more on the inside than a physical thing. I had never really thought about it till I started reading about it quite accidentally. I'm from a part of the world where things like this are not thought about. I read about other people and I could identify with them. For instance, in order to feel like I'm in an ok environment, I need to have the tv, music and the internet all on at the same time before I can sit down to read or do any work. I'm more of a creative person and this kind of behaviour ruined my business. I made clothes, did interior decorating, event planning and decorating, gifts, cakes, art and anything I could figure out how to do.In my mind everything is one thing, I can't focus on ONE thing, especially when it comes to work. In spite of wanting and needing to do it all at the same time, I was always overwhelmed and my staff could never keep up and were always frustrated with me. It made me look like some kind of creative genius, but I was always overwhelmed and overdrawn and overspent and always had headaches and palpitations. My mind cannot stay still, like I said, on the outside, I appear to be very calm but inside it's like 100 tv stations on at the same time. Is this normal? Or is it something to look into? I thought I was the normal one and the people around me just didn't get it. I really need some answers. Thanks. (more...)

Open Question: is it legal to have blue neon/el wire inside a car?
I know its not legal for exterior blue lights (or red ones) but what about the interior, even if it can be seen through a window? I am wishing to subtly add a purple el wire around the base of a casket bed in a hearse, for a nice ambient glow... These would of course be partially seen through the windows, would this be a legal issue or not? Furthermore I am looking to have adverts playing on my headrest screens, these will surely be seen by the outside world (the idea for me!) but is that a problem as well? Of course kids watch their dvds and games throughout the night on many car entertainment systems while their parents are driving around. This surely cant be illegal if other cars and such can see the lit screens? **the headrests are of course facing the rear from behind the front seats - i wont be watching while i am driving. I am based in the UK, with UK laws** (more...)
