My best friend and I have an odd situation...In the past, we have both been with the other's partner (though not in the context of the relationship & it was two years back). The best friend, her boyfriend and I are all terrific friends and despite the past, no one really seems to care all that much. My boyfriend however, cannot seem to get over it. He states that the other boyfriend is not welcome in our home ever, even when he is not there. Being that I certainly pay my portion of the rent & do not tell him who he can be friends with--it seems wholly unreasonable and controlling that he should act this way. He constantly makes threats to do the other guy harm and it just seems so immature. He asked that we arrange a dinner meeting so all four of us could meet and the two could talk--I guess he wanted to give a piece of his mind. Not surprisingly, my BF and her boyfriend declined. I don't know how to resolve this issue without losing two very important friends or my boyfriend! This morning I bought a BT home hub with the aim of going wireless with my broadband. I don't have a laptop yet but wanted my desktop computer to be wireless to get round a disastorous wires problem in my house. The home hub arrived today and I bought a wireless USB adaptor for my computer. BT say the hub is working correctly Belkin say the adapter is working correctly. But I cannot get wireless access. It shows as being there but you cannot connect to it. After 6 hours on the phone today I am losing patience! The best guess i have had so far from BT is that my computer is old and is 1.0v whereas the adapter is 2.0 v. So the two are not compatible. Does this sound reasonable and if so how can I resolve it? Alternatively can anyone help tell me what might be going wrong? (more...)

A friend asked me to clean-up his badly infected XP laptop. After 2 days I managed to clean-up the machine. Everything is working fine, I can account for all the running processes in task manager, and nothing seems out of norm. Except I cannot run updates on any security software. I did update them manually, but the automatic update says it cannot connect to the internet. Symantec, F-secure, Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Microsoft Update. They all give the same error. So I tried to resolve update.microsoft.com, and it gives me 127.0.0.1 - Some something in the system is forcing it back to the localhost. So I'm guessing the others are the same. But how is it doing that? I checked the hosts file, checked the registry, flushed dns, try unloading the dns service, and so far no luck. So I suspect the virus left a file somewhere in the system that forces the changes in the dns, and F-Secure/Symantec/Ad-Aware/Spybot/Windows Defender/Malicious Software Removal Tool can't find it. Ok I was dating my ex gf for about 3 years she came home from thanksgiving break and said she was really confused and needed some space to think. We decided to try to work it out instead of taking space which didnt work out at all so before xmas we split up so she can "get her mind straight" after talking to her she said she can definately see us together but she can also see us not together. She wont give me a definate anwser either way on whats going to happen i have given her PLENTY of chances to say im sorry its not going to work move on please but she wont.... She says she just needs to get away from it all and relax... she also said shes not going to date anyone or do anything stupid until this gets resolved one way or the other...... i feel that i really want to tell my ex i want him back.. but im not sure.. its been 2months since the breakup we were together for 2 and half years.. the result of the break up was mainly because it was a long distance relationship and i really wanted to see him but because of work it wasnt possible and we used to end up in arguements.. i imagine myself with this guy forever if only the distance could be resolved.. eventually it can be resolved i guess but it needs alot of effort. anyways.. i cant visit him till april (for 10days) or june for all the summer.. cos of my studies.. so i really dunno if there is anypoint in telling him i want him back... cos i cant meet him yet.. but june is like till forever.. I've been reading a lot about this subject from the internet and there are just so many different answers, mostly guesses, so I decided to knuckle down and try to figure it out by hard calculation. I've tried to model it close to reality. Hopefully, the calculations are correct, as well as the sources for the following facts. You are at a shoreline, looking out to sea at the horizon, with a 70º horizontal vista to either side of your mid-line (about the limit for human eyes). You have 20/20 vision, which means you can resolve two lines, 1mm apart, at a distance of 1.375 metres. Average Radius of earth, R = 6367.471 km Question: How high must you be to resolve the curvature of the earth? That is, to resolve the height difference between your mid-line horizon and the edge-line horizons, at the distance the horizon lies from you. future fate and Jeff D : you are both relatively close to the answer I have, but only hard calculations can back up your statements. There are many people with better than 20/20 vision, that may include you, in which case, you both may be correct, but I just wanted to work it out for the parameters I have given. Oh! woe is me! How am I going to live this down? Scythian, your goof is just a fish poop in the ocean of my goof. I spent two days trying to get the calculations right, then checked them innumerable times. I am confident they are correct, BUT, my initial assumption that the horizon line is a great circle has culminated in disaster. After reading through your answer, I realised that it IS a circle, but one drawn on the sphere of the earth, so all my hard work was for nought. Although, my answer is not too far removed from yours, probably because of the short distances involved. I don't doubt that you are correct, but my lack of 3D visualisation at the moment is preventing me from working this out to my own satisfaction. Maybe when I calm down a bit, I'll have another go. For now, I bow to your cute little equation, in awe. Thanks for your patient explanation, Scythian. Still pondering. I've just had a revelation, which I hope is correct. And you're right about me, Scythian; I WAS making it too complicated, because I WAS looking for an exact expression, but now I think I can make it work. I was worried about the mistake I made, but have come to the conclusion that it doesn't make any difference to the final outcome. It IS the great circle that's needed in the calculations, because that's the shortest distance between two points on a sphere. The fact that the horizon line is a circle on a sphere, and therefore a little longer in distance, doesn't even come into the calculations. This is just so wonderful that I think I'll have to retract my goof. I've run out of time tonight, but hopefully I'll be able to present my (unchanged) calculations within 24 hours. (more...)

Well, I recently started getting attacked by "rapid antivirus" which is a virus disguised as a virus remover. and i used MANY virus/trojan removers such as spybot, and others. My main security center is Mcafee, and when this virus struck, my security center was acting as if there was nothing wrong in place. I think i got it removed eventually by a trojan remover that ran a scan before my computer was even fully active. So the big problems were resolved. Now, everytime i go on webpages, i get a popup window, usually the same site html, but a different site that i see. i looked into the popup that kept coming, and it worked like any other page (one time it was a similar to map quest address finder, worked how it said) but the problem is, these popups keep coming up, and nothing in my security center/ popup remover notices. Also, the big problem, is every once in a while, i'd say every half an hour when im on my comp, it restarts - or i guess crashes? Im not sure. Is there any way i could resolve this problem? I would really appreciate some input whether it was a link to a reliable virus remover, or possibly the fact that a virus wouldn't be the cause of my computer restarting so often. Thanks for reading! I'm thinking the ram could be part of the problem, but i went to best buy, and its about 70 bucks for a ram upgrade, and i was lookin online, i just really dont want to spend that kind of money. how can i configure my computer to make dramatic changes regarding ram usage. I bought it like almost a year ago on Amazon.com, and it worked perfectly. I brought it to a party to take pictures, and that was the last day it worked. I replaced the 4 AA batteries, and that still didn't work. I found out there was a coin battery CR1220 compartment, and I replaced that as well. My camera still won't turn on. I have NEVER dropped my camera, not even once. I have never spilled any type of liquid on it. I've been googling on troubleshoot problems, and one guy said that he had the same problem, and he resolved it by spraying WD-40 because the camera repairman said it would be best or else he'd be paying more than the camera itself to fix it. For the S5 IS camera owner, did you experience the same problem and how did you fix it? For people who don't own it, what would your guess be? or what do you think I should do? (more...)

My husband got in a stupid argument tonight. We both were wrong in our situation, but where we left off leaves me wondering about my safety - and I guess his too. It was one of those "I have had it" arguments - "last straw". He was screaming at me, cursing at me, not admitting his wrong doing, talking about some close friends of mine at an event we had come from - just loud and physically "loud" banging on the wheel etc.. My husband wasn't listening to me - cutting me off and I wanted him to stop the car so I opened the door while it was moving. He wouldn't stop. He got nastier with his words and voice and so I grabbed the wheel. So then he pulled to the side of the road in a ditch, got out of the car with his keys, and walked away and left me there. I sat there for 15 minutes trying to figure out whether to have the cops come get me or my brother. He then returned and said it was too far to walk but he would have preferred to leave me there. He drove me home and I listened to him call me stupid and crazy for 10 minutes. He left. Don't know where he is right now. No this is not the first time something like this has happened. There have been times he has been so angry and I haven't done anything - and he has left me in the middle of nowhere. He has thrown things around my parents house - our house - breaking things when he is angry. I am seriously contemplating whether or not we should be married. We've been trying counseling for a year. The counselors are constantly trying to identify his rage more because he treats everything with anger. With me - it generally stems from "outdoing" him or defending myself. Not to say he is the only one wrong - but this "side" of me didn't start until I was with him. I have never reacted this way to anyone - I can't get anything out of him. 2 1/2 years of marriage and we still can't get anything together in it. I have tried to ask him if we should separate or divorce and he refuses. He said you can't get up and leave every time something goes wrong. But I think we are beyond that? I've tried the whole not responding to him when I'm angry - or letting it go when he does things like interrupting me or trying to be macho man but that doesn't resolve anything. hey everyone! PLEASE take the time to read it, it's a life decision so when people ask me what I want to do, I just say I don't know. but I have this really weird goal in life. I watch a lot of movies and read a lot of books and listen to the news a lot and you know how they have all those crime stories? Well, I want to make sure that before I die, there are less of them! so basically, I want to go around the world and help stop crime. It's not like being a police officer...more like mother terresa i guess? Like places in Africa and India where there is so much crime...women being raped, murder, forced sacrifice, etc. I want to help stop those and resolve issues It sounds really weird... I know. But it's just that I love to be around people and when I think about how someone can kill or hurt someone else it really messes my brain up. So I want to help prevent it...like chnage people I guess. is that practical? or should I just try to be normal and get my head straight? PS. I want to study psychology once I go to college so that if I ever DO try to do that then I'll have a tool that can help me (because it deals with people) and if I can't do it or something then i's a safety net career that I can fall back on and make money. But either way...do you think that would be a waste of time? Could it be done? Am I just being unbelieveable emotional?Thanks! (more...)
