Domain specificity of personal epistemology: Resolved questions, persistent issues, new models [An article from: International Journal of Educational Research] This digital document is a journal article from International Journal of Educational Research, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Beliefs that individuals hold about knowledge and knowing, or what has been termed ''personal epistemology'', are related to learning and achievement in complex ways. These beliefs are also differentiated by discipline (e.g., math, science, history) as well as by judgment domains (e.g., personal taste, morality, meaning). This commentary on five articles on the domain specificity of epistemic beliefs outlines the persistent issues in this field of research, including issues of terminology, methodology, and the interrelation of domain specificity and domain generality, and provides an overview of how the authors address these concerns. Also included are directions for future research and educational implications.

Open Question: Can't stop worrying. ?
Hello. I'm a 16 year old girl, and I am constantly worrying about something to do with 'the end of the world.' At the moment I'm worried about India and Pakistan going to war and this starting WW3. It's taken over my life, I check news websites at least once or twice an hour to see if there are any updates on it. I also search the internet for people's opinions and what people think is likely to happen. And this isn't just a thing that will go away if the India/Pakistan thing is resolved - I just move on to something else. So far this year I've worried about general nuclear war, Russia/Georgia, Iran, and the LHC. Other things in the past have been Bird Flu, meteorites, supervolcanoes, and nuclear war again, as well as constantly worrying about death and what happens after it. I also worry about my health, I've been having this weird thing where it feels like I'm being strangled, or wearing a polo neck jumper, or a tie that's too tight. I also hear my heart beat a lot of the time, especially when I'm trying to sleep, and I can't sleep if I can hear it. I know it's normal to be concerned about the world we live in, but surely not to this extent? I can't go for even an hour without thinking about it. And I lie awake at night worrying. Sometimes I feel like it's pointless to make plans for the future and the idea of having children seems stupid - it would be cruel and pointless. (Although obviously I'm nowhere near to the having kid stage yet! :P) It's just so horrible. I know I should make the most of life and not worry about things out of my control, but I can't help it. Is there something wrong with me? Is there a way out of this constant worry or am I going to be like this forever? Because that scares me. Thank you. Emily. (more...)

Open Question: Advice on handling an uncomfortable situation?
My best friend and I have an odd situation...In the past, we have both been with the other's partner (though not in the context of the relationship & it was two years back). The best friend, her boyfriend and I are all terrific friends and despite the past, no one really seems to care all that much. My boyfriend however, cannot seem to get over it. He states that the other boyfriend is not welcome in our home ever, even when he is not there. Being that I certainly pay my portion of the rent & do not tell him who he can be friends with--it seems wholly unreasonable and controlling that he should act this way. He constantly makes threats to do the other guy harm and it just seems so immature. He asked that we arrange a dinner meeting so all four of us could meet and the two could talk--I guess he wanted to give a piece of his mind. Not surprisingly, my BF and her boyfriend declined. I don't know how to resolve this issue without losing two very important friends or my boyfriend! Any constructive advice is appreciated :) (my best friend and her boyfriend declined...i realize "BF" can mean boyfriend) (more...)

Open Question: As Dr. Phil would say, "You can't change what you won't acknowledge." He contacts women online & by texting...?
... and he denies, denies, denies it. So, I'm ready to leave. If he won't admit to anything, then there is nothing left to salvage. If he were to admit to it, we could maybe work together to resolve the problems in our relationship, and finally acknowledge that Pink Elephant in the room. I have got to get to a better place emotionally than being with a lying, cheating husband. I can't wait until our daughter turns 18... my soul is being sucked dry by his double life and online dealings. The holidays this year for us were just going through the motions - there was no holiday cheer in this house... not when I know he is sharing his thoughts and feelings with others online and via cell phone texting. I feel like I am doing our daughter complete injustice by staying in this marriage to her father when he has explicitly demonstrated complete disregard for me, my feelings and our marriage vows. He is also a very, very poor example as a man for our daughter to look up to. They say women unconsciously look for attributes of their fathers in the men they date and marry, right? I don't want her to meet someone like like her dad - someone that she loves that will hurt her via his actions and deeds. What would you suggest I do to get his attention that I know he is still engaging in this behavior?? Smashing his laptop to bits won't work (company computer), and he also uses his cell phone to "stay in contact" with his contacts during the day... (more...)

Open Question: Your Thoughts Is Xbox Live Becoming A Rip Off ?
I recently emailed Microsoft regarding the fact games are becoming riddled with additional content and expense, my email: "Hi I just really wanted to mention that I am getting more and more fed up and annoyed with XBL. I think it's turning out to be a huge con with games like Fable 2 requiring you to buy the game XBL membership, then 800MS points for additional content, and then insisting they buy a further 800MS points to complete the game (The Completionist), in my opinion that's Dick Turpin, Stand & Deliver tactics, the irony being that too is the best clothing in Fable 2. So Microsoft was once a great company with a philanthropist as a CEO. So why is it now resorting to tactics like these, essentially "ripping kids off, of their hard earned money" (Thanks Axle). If XBL was free then possibly these charges would be justified. Not to mention the previous downloaded themes that I had at my cost were wiped out on the NXE update !" Response: "We have received your inquiry, unfortunately we will not be able to resolve your issue through the email support, kindly contact our customer support line and our representative will gladly assist you on resolving your issue." Do not forget that this is a premium service paid for by us the users! They barely speak English, cannot promise you a response unless you accept the new user agreement to access the forums, which seems to indemnify them from claims, and further charges etc ! What are your thoughts on XBL ?? (more...)
