Science Magazine's State of the Planet 2008-2009: with a Special Section on Energy and Sustainability
Science Magazine's State of the Planet 2008-2009: with a Special Section on Energy and Sustainability
Taken from the pages of Science and supplemented by contributions from the magazine’s editors, State of the Planet 2008-2009 offers contemporary science writing that is sometimes provocative, frequently enlightening, and always authoritative. Published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Science is one of the most respected scientific magazines in the world. With a readership of more than one million people, it offers “hard science” from top scientists to both educated lay readers and scientists alike.

The articles collected here are arranged thematically and each section is introduced by a prominent scientist or science writer. Donald Kennedy, who was Editor-in-Chief of Science when these articles appeared in the magazine, contributes a preface and several short essays. Focusing on issues of energy and sustainability, sections of the volume are devoted to the prospects of energy-sparing technologies and alternatives to fossil fuel use, including ethanol and cellulosic digestion. Other sections center on climate change, led by a comprehensive essay on the state of scientific knowledge today and followed by contributions about the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, as well as the effects of climate change that have been measured to date, including changes in migration and breeding cycles of birds and flowering in plants, changing patterns of hurricanes and extreme weather events, and alterations in forest fire frequency.

Interspersed throughout the book are Science news pieces that highlight particular issues and cases relevant to the main scientific findings. A glossary of key terms and concepts helps students and nonspecialists better understand the terminology and the issues.

Open Question: WDYTYA 2009 - Travel Query?
Has anyone been to the Who Do You Think You Are Live show in London Olympia? I went last year, armed with a map of the underground and a planned route of how I would get there. I was coming from Waterloo station. But I never got to my destination of the High Street Kensington underground station, because on the tannoy they said that there was a bus service heading straight to the Olympia from the next stop...except that I can't remember which stop that was. Does anyone else know from last year? The reason I've put it in the genealogy section is because the buses were organised specifically to take you to the event and they weren't part of a timetabled service. I have my mum with me this year, and she can't walk far, so the bus would make it much easier for her. (more...)

Open Question: Why is Craigslist saying my payment failed when I post ad in erotic services? Am I blacklisted?
I have been posting in the erotic services section for some time and I have seen all of the changes. Now my accounts no longer get put on hold but they deny my credit card payment over and over. I open another account and still the same thing. Almost everyone I know is having this problem. How are they determining who gets to post and how do i fix it? (more...)

Open Question: Where do these people get their stock?
I was on ebay today looking at different items in the health and beauty section. I was amazed to see "power seller" after "power seller" who seem to sell tens of things on ebay every single day. My question is this: Where do these people find the designer makeup and perfumes so cheap, that they can afford to sell these items at such a deep discount to others? BEFORE ANSWERING PLEASE READ BELOW!!! I am not talking about useless junk that you can find on the site. I know all about drop shippers and "cataloge services" that people use to sell knick knacks. I am talking about the designer makeup you see; like Estee Lauder firming cream that sells in the store for 85.00 a bottle, sold on ebay for 7.00, and the seller has 10 available. MAC, Clinique, Chanel, higher brands is what I am referring to. Not drug store stuff. Thanks for taking the time! (more...)

Resolved Question: So let me understand, the people responsible for our economic crisis blamed Bush and got elected?

Open Question: Why does the USCIS automatically suspect or accuse couples with different skin colors of marriage fraud? ?
In the marriage fraud section of the USCIS it states that couples who do not share a similar cultural background or ethnicity are classified as fraud marriages. How is that legal? It Is against the law to tell someone you are denying them a service just because of their skin color or cultural background. Basically the USCIS Is saying that if the couple is an "Interracial couple" that automatically means the couple's marriage is not real! Robert De Niro and Grace would have a fit! I am "Black" and my husband that loves me very much is from Russia. It sounds like America is trying to teach me that my husband is supposed to think i am ugly and unattractive because i am black and he is not. Bottom line is: we love each other and we are very real, and i think its sick that my petition for my husband could be made unnecessarily difficult or denied just because i don't look like him! We submitted correct paperwork, paid our money, and we have no legal bars to our case. We just want to be together because we love each other and not be separated by the govt. because they do not like our appearances. Has anyone had a negative experience with this issue? (more...)

Open Question: Do The Extra Advertisements on TV Bother You as Much as Me?
Like many people I have purchased some of my favorite TV shows on DVD. Originally I bought the DVD of "Hogan's Heroes" because none of the channels on my Time Warner cable programming had ever offered show. As I watched the episodes, enjoying no commercials, I noticed something peculiar. From the opening credits to the closing credits every episode (Seasons 1-3) was always right around 25:30 in length. That means at the time of the original airing of the program there were only 4:30 available for advertising. How amazing? Only 4:30 of commercials. Then after maybe a year or so "TV-Land" started airing Hogan's Heroes and after watching an episode or two I noticed that there was at least 10:00 of commercials. Scratching my head I decided to go ahead and see how they added so many more minutes of commercials. Waiting for the TV-Land broadcast of Hogan's Heroes to begin, I had the original DVD of the same episode loaded up and ready to go side by side. When the broadcast began I started th DVD at exactly the same time. One thing I noticed right off the bat was the two programs did not stay in sync. The TV-Land broadcast jumped out in front (Time Compression). So much so that after 5 minutes they were about 40 seconds apart. Then about 1:30 minute before the first commercial break they just cut out a entire section of the original show. Once the TV-Land broadcast cut to the first commercial break it took roughly 3:50 for the DVD to catch up. In that first commercial break section of the episode TV-Land had subtracted almost 4 minutes of time off of the original episode. Holy Toledo!! To cut the long story short, this is what TV-Land does to my favorite programs from the past. 1) They Time Compress the episodes 2) They cut out large segments of the episodes 3) They Fast Foreward and split screen during the credits In the end they added roughly 5 minutes of commercials to the original 30 minute broadcast. I was blown away! I did the same thing for an Andy Griffith episode and it was much worse. Here are the details: Original Broadcast Episode Length: 25:20 TV-Land Broadcast Episode Length: 19:10 Total Time Removed from original Broadcast: 6:10 ---> Time Compression - 2:50 ---> Cut Out Segments - 2:20 ---> Split Screen with commercials during Credits - 1:00 They magically added 6 minutes worth of commercials to the originally aired program. Once I started looking I began to see this very same thing on other channels playing movies and other original programming. The new standard today is to have roughly 17-22 minutes worth of commercials for every hour of programming. Compared to the 60?s and 70?s there was only 9-10 minutes of commercials. That means that in the last 30 years or so of broadcasting the price to watch a program has more than doubled. This isn't even including the advertising they have while the program is running? banners/people flying/walking across the screen? what?s on next etc? Would you allow a similar increase in your Income or Sales tax? So I ask myself is it worth it to be annoyed with the commercial to programming ratio on Television and also have to pay for it? Not only do I pay the cable bill but also pay in time spent watching or avoiding so many commercials. Some people have DVR?s and TIVO?s so they are paying even more money and spending even more of their personal time trying to cut out that extra 5-6 minutes of commercials that have been added over the years to a 30 minute broadcast. The answer is No. No more will I dance with the Cable companies or the Satellite companies. I am done? I cast my final vote and walked. On Friday Jan 2, 2009, I canceled my cable Service with Time Warner. I will buy a Antenna and start receiving the new free digital HDTV channels. I visited http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx and found in my area of Southern California that there are roughly 60 channels that I can receive for free. And come February 17th 2009 they will all be digital. So now if I get annoyed with their programming? it will be for free and I wont feel like I need to receive value in return for the money I spend. The Question I have for you is?. Will you continue to pay television providers $600-$2000 per year for the privilege of drowning in their commercials? (more...)

Open Question: I need some advice on assault and my safety and rights. I live in the UK. ?
I have recently had my now ex partner arrested for assaulting me. This abuse has been going on for 2 1/2 years and we have been together for 3 1/2 years. The police say he has been charged with section 39 of the criminal justice act 1988 and he has admitted the recent assault and all the past assaults. He is in custody and will be for a few more days.We have a child together who is under 1. I am concerned he will try to take our child or his family will harass me. I tried to leave before and his mother text ed me abuse and demanded to see her grandchild although I refused. I am really frightened he will find me and hurt me or my child. What can I do and as I know he will not go to jail as this is his first reported assualt will he have community service etc??? He was charged with GBH when he was in his early teens twice but this was a child record. (more...)
