Britten - A Midsummer Night's Dream / Haitink, Cotrubas, Davies, Buchan, Glyndebourne Festival Opera

This production triumphantly fulfills a complex and difficult assignment. Gossamer fantasy may be the hardest style to put into operatic form, and Shakespeare's
A Midsummer Night's Dream is particularly challenging. Some of the challenge lies in its various levels of action and characterization, each demanding a different kind of music: fairies and mortals, nobles and peasants, lovers and buffoons, not to mention its play-within-a-play, its intricate subplots, and its contrasts between earthy and unworldly creatures, mundane and magic environments. Britten took up that challenge with rich imagination and brilliant technique, and the 1982 Glyndebourne production brings his vision to the stage (and the video screen) with remarkable precision.
Perhaps the most remarkable of several outstanding performances is that of countertenor James Bowman, singing lightly, flexibly, and expressively in the challenging role of Oberon. Ileana Cotrubas is equally impressive as his wife and sparring partner Tytania. The supporting cast is excellent, the visuals are atmospherically exotic, and conductor Bernard Haitink's style is exactly right. --Joe McLellan

Hamlet / Kline, New York Shakespeare Festival (Broadway Theatre Archive)

Kevin Kline directs and stars in this first-rate production of Shakespeare's most famous play. Originally produced by Joseph Papp for the New York Shakespeare Festival, this version was adapted by Kline and television director Kirk Browning for PBS. While one occasionally longs for the live audience reaction, the television production does offer the advantage of seeing
Hamlet with close-ups. The design is beautiful, with sets full of dark, gloomy halls and characters in elegant modern dress. Kline's interpretation of
Hamlet is an enjoyably accessible one; he never lets melancholy obscure Hamlet's wit. Veteran stage actress Dana Ivey is an excellent Gertrude, pliable without ever straying over into idiocy. This production is equally enjoyable as an introduction to
Hamlet or as a fresh interpretation for those long familiar with the tale.

Much Ado About Nothing / New York Shakespeare Festival (Broadway Theatre Archive)

Joseph Papp's 1972 CBS-TV television production of The New York Shakespeare Festival's Broadway staging of Shakespeare's rollicking comedy is brassy, bouncy and all-together entertaining. Featuring Sam Waterston and the Tony nominated performances of Kathleen Widdoes and Barnard Hughes, Papp's turn-of-the-century version has Teddy Roosevelt roughriders and bicycle-riding women suffragettes, but remains faithful to the classic tale: Beatrice and Benedick are still sparring partners fighting their merry war of words; the evil Don Jon continues conspiring to break up the wedding of Hero and Claudio; and it's once again up to Dogbery to save the day. Critically acclaimed and enormously popular with audiences, "Much Ado About Nothing," originated at the open-air Delacorte Theatre in Central Park, was transferred to Broadway and was perceived as the first successful Shakespeare to play without a major star in Broadway history. The CBS broadcast was seen by twenty million people.

King Lear / Jones, New York Shakespeare Festival (Broadway Theatre Archive)

Brilliant performances from an amazing cast highlight this piece of modern theater history. James Earl Jones stars as Lear in this digitally remastered recording of a live performance in the park. (If you've ever wished you could see one of Joseph Papp's legendary New York Shakespeare Festival productions, this is your chance.) The crowd reactions add a layer to the play by helping to bring the excellent production to life. The direction is vibrant, keeping both a reverence for Shakespeare's work and the importance of entertaining a crowd in mind. The astonishing supporting cast includes Rosalind Cash, Paul Sorvino, Rene Auberjonois, and Raul Julia, and a remarkable performance by Douglass Watson as Kent.

Much Ado About Nothing / New York Shakespeare Festival (Broadway Theatre Archive)

In 1972, twenty million people saw the broadcast of this CBS-TV production of Shakespeare's classic tale of romance, mistaken identity, and the battle of the sexes. Though this turn-of-the-century version has Roosevelt's Rough-Riders and bicycle riding suffragettes, the story is the same: Beatrice and Benedick fight their merry war of words; the evil Don Juan conspires to disrupt the wedding of Hero and Claudio; and it's up to Dogbery to save the day. Critically acclaimed and loved by audiences, this rollicking comedy is brassy, bouncy and all-together entertaining. First presented at the New York Shakespeare Festival, this production later became the first truly successful Shakespeare play in Broadway history that did not boast a major star. Features Oscar-nominee Sam Waterston (Law & Order)as Benedick and the Tony-nominated performances of Emmy-winners Kathleen Widdoes (As the World Turns) and Barnard Hughes (Midnight Cowboy).

Resolved Question: I'm 13, auditioning for National Youth Theatre in February, any tips on what to expect?
Right...
I'm auditioning for the National Youth Theatre in London on February 21st and I'm not sure what to expect in the workshop and what monologue would leave a lasting impression. I've been in professional shows and a feature film before, but I don't know anyone who has auditioned for NYT before. Me and some people from my school did a workshop with two people from NYT during the Shakespeare Schools Festival back in October, and we did things like face exercises and a little improv. Is this what I can expect in February?
Acting means everything to me and it would mean so much to get in, so any help/advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
xox (:
At the moment I've looked mostly at teen monologues, you know girls who have been abused, eating disorders, in love. I THINK I perform them well, but I can imagine a lot of people performing them, so I'd like to do surprise them by doing something more intellectual?

Resolved Question: Decoding Shakespeare-Romeo and Juliet?
I'm doing something for school and i have to perform a soliloquy by Juliet and i don't even get it and i think it would help me do a better job if i actually understood what i was saying so i was wondering if someone could tell me what she is saying in detail, as in exactly what it means
I'd really appreciate it...
Here it is...
Gallop apace, you fiery-footed steeds,
Towards Phoebus' lodging: such a wagoner
As Phaethon would whip you to the west,
And bring in cloudy night immediately.
Spread thy close curtain, love-performing night,
That runaway's eyes may wink and Romeo
Leap to these arms, untalk'd of and unseen.
Lovers can see to do their amorous rites
By their own beauties; or, if love be blind,
It best agrees with night. Come, civil night,
Thou sober-suited matron, all in black,
And learn me how to lose a winning match,
Play'd for a pair of stainless maidenhoods:
Hood my unmann'd blood, bating in my cheeks,
With thy black mantle; till strange love, grown bold,
Think true love acted simple modesty.
Come, night; come, Romeo; come, thou day in night;
For thou wilt lie upon the wings of night
Whiter than new snow on a raven's back.
Come, gentle night, come, loving, black-brow'd night,
Give me my Romeo; and, when he shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun.
O, I have bought the mansion of a love,
But not possess'd it, and, though I am sold,
Not yet enjoy'd: so tedious is this day
As is the night before some festival
To an impatient child that hath new robes
And may not wear them. O, here comes my nurse,
And she brings news; and every tongue that speaks
But Romeo's name speaks heavenly eloquence.
it's pretty long, it's the first half that's really baffling me...
thank you :)
