Planet Google: One Company's Audacious Plan To Organize Everything We Know

Based on unprecedented access he received to the highly secretive "Googleplex," acclaimed
New York Times columnist Randall Stross takes readers deep inside Google, the most important, most innovative, and most ambitious company of the Internet Age. His revelations demystify the strategy behind the company's recent flurry of bold moves, all driven by the pursuit of a business plan unlike any other: to become the indispensable gatekeeper of all the world's information, the one-stop destination for all our information needs. Will Google succeed? And what are the implications of a single company commanding so much information and knowing so much about us?
As ambitious as Google's goal is, with 68 percent of all Web searches (and growing), profits that are the envy of the business world, and a surplus of talent, the company is, Stross shows, well along the way to fulfilling its ambition, becoming as dominant a force on the Web as Microsoft became on the PC. Google isn't just a superior search service anymore. In recent years it has launched a dizzying array of new services and advanced into whole new businesses, from the introductions of its controversial Book Search and the irresistible Google Earth, to bidding for a slice of the wireless-phone spectrum and nonchalantly purchasing YouTube for $1.65 billion.
Google has also taken direct aim at Microsoft's core business, offering free e-mail and software from word processing to spreadsheets and calendars, pushing a transformative -- and highly disruptive -- concept known as "cloud computing." According to this plan, users will increasingly store all of their data on Google's massive servers -- a network of a million computers that amounts to the world's largest supercomputer, with unlimited capacity to house all the information Google seeks.
The more offerings Google adds, and the more ubiquitous a presence it becomes, the more dependent its users become on its services and the more information they contribute to its uniquely comprehensive collection of data. Will Google stay true to its famous "Don't Be Evil" mantra, using its power in its customers' best interests?
Stross's access to those who have spearheaded so many of Google's new initiatives, his penetrating research into the company's strategy, and his gift for lively storytelling produce an entertaining, deeply informed, and provocative examination of the company's audacious vision for the future and the consequences not only for the business world, but for our culture at large.

Open Question: Any tips for planning a vacation?
Sometime in March, my boyfriend and I want to go somewhere warm and all-inclusive at a fairly good deal..
(We are traveling from the Northeast US and wouldn't mind staying in the states if there is a warm/nice enough place)
Is there anything I should pay attention to when browsing the different sites for the best deals?
Should we be looking at adult-only resorts, or will children being there not bother us?
Any specific sites, locations or resorts I should look at?
All suggestions or pointers are much appreciated!!!!!

Open Question: I really need some help from someone of the unknown right now please...?
Okay, this is gonna be a little long so please just read it and take it in. I have been in a relationship with this guy now for only 7 months but we have fallen head over heels for eachother and still keep on a fallin everytime we see eachother. Its just one of those gut feelings that you get when you really know something is just, well, right! I am only 18 years old and I just recently joined the Air Force. I know that joining the armed forces is really something that I want to do for myself and I am going to do it, obviously. But there is a little problem... I am in love. I just found out yesterday that I am not going to be put on base where I intended on, which is where I would be closer to my boyfriend and family. There is one other base that is fairly close to them but there is a really slim chance that I will be put on base there either. My boyfriend and I have been through hell and high water to be together and I am not ready to give up, not yet at least. I know that he isnt either but this is going to be really tough. He wants to go to College at a specific school which is located in the area that I will not be put on base at. When it comes down to the Air Force, after BMT and Training for your job, wherever you get put on base at is where you stay put for four years or however long you plan on staying in the military. While you are on base you only get to have your imediate family visit you or, unless you are married you can live with your spouse in a home near the base. You are only allowed 33 days a year vacation. So while I will most likely be fairly far away from my love, I will not get to see him much for the next four or more years. I do not want to take him away from his dream of college, just as he doesnt want to take me away from my military dream. But that doesnt mean that I want to be away from him. I know that what is ment to be will find its way but I have a feeling that even if we are ment to be we could eventually drift away from eachother while we both go our seperate ways in this world. So this is where I started getting confused and decided that I need a little help from someone that only knows the story of my love and life and nothing more. I know that I am only 18 and so is he but we are in love. You may be the type that says that we are young and dont know what love is and how our brains arent fully developed until we are at least 25.... but how old do you have to be to know what love is? I know that I care about him so much that I would put aside my feelings for him if I knew that I would get in the way of him doing what he wants with his life. Its only been 7 months, but God! The feeling is so strong! I dont want to jeapordize this by ending it because we arent sure we will be able to make it that long. I dont want to go off to some other place and only see him a total of maybe 3 times each year, its just not healthy in my opinion. I want to be with him and I will do whatever i takes. I was thinking that maybe we should run off and get married before I go to basic training. That way he could fly out to stay with me on base, but still stay here in our home state and do college. I want to marry him for who he is and how much I love him. Is that a smart thing to do? Or do you think that me asking him to elope will ruin it. I am still not sure what he would even say about all this. I know he loves me but maybe getting married this early in life isnt what he wants. Should I still at least talk to him about it like I did on here. Should I just go for it and ask him to run off and marry me? And earlier when I mentioned that we have been through hell and high water to be togther, I wasnt just saying that for my health.... His parents dont even want us to be together. We come from a small town and He has always been a great, respectful young kid who always does little community jobs and saves up money, gets straight A's and has VERY strict parents... but he respects them even though they dont give him any freedome or space. He is still in high school, this is his senior year. I graduated last year, and yes I wasnt your straight A perfect kid that never did anything wrong. I drank a few times and got into a little trouble once or twice but nothing that was really THAT bad. But since this is a little town, people seem to judge you from rumors and pretty much have their opinions of you etched in stone in a jiffy. His parents are a few of the small amount of people who are very up tight and excuse my french, but think that their shit doesnt stink. They hated that me and my boyfriend have been dating... And just recently his mother banned us from seeing eachother. He has started to slowly rebel against them for the first time in his life. He has came to see me a few times when his mom told him not to. No matter what she will always not like me, even if I were to become president, she still would hate me. Thats just how she is. But anyways, we love eachother and arent going to let anyone ge

Roughly how much is it?
Also, do they test for specific STDs?? I don't think I have one, but want to be tested anyway after hearing that my bf had cheated on me. I just want to be on the safe side. I'm hoping they test for everything. Idk how that works though. If they ask you which ones you want to be tested for or if they test for everything or what....
what i meant was do they have like a package deal where they test for all STDs at one price??

Open Question: Going to Argentina HELP!!!?
I'm an American student planning on studying in either Buenos Aires or Córdoba next year and i'm a little nervous. I'm planning on staying with a host family...i'm just worried about doing or saying something they might consider inappropriate or rude. Any one got any specific tips on what to do or not to do to make my stay less stressful for everyone..you know like specific cultural differences. Also is it possible i'm just freaking out and they would understand that i might not be familiar with their culture and forgive any incorrect etiquette?
And for the record...
*I happen to be very Catholic, which i hope would make some instances easier except for we still may practice the same religion slightly differently...but regardless i'm all for Catholic-based traditions and what not
*i speak enough spanish that i will get by, i will struggle with it but it won't be long before i'll be comfortable speaking (i will probably have to be corrected and helped in the beginning)

Open Question: Confused? hard to get, not interested?
Alright this is kind of hard to explain but im having some trouble with this girl Ive been talking to, i cant really tell if she is interested in me or not, but let me try and explain the situation.
The first time we actually hung out was at a "party" i guess you could call it, and she told one of my buddies to ask what i though of her.. and told him she thinks she likes me? but ever since we hung out i cant really tell whats going on...
We can text each other back and forth without a problem, Ive talked to her on the phone but only with a specific purpose ( a question, answer about plans, etc ) Ive tried to hang out with her about twice since the "party" and neither times worked out.. but she still keeps in contact with me with texts and things.. im a senior in high school and recently our break ended, and since the Sunday before school started back up i haven't heard a word from her (i decided not to text her to see how long it would take before she would attempt to talk to me) i don't really know how to describe it that well but i really cant tell
she doesn't seem like she wants to steer away from me like she wants me to leave her alone, but hasn't worked very hard to hang out or anything of course i guess i could try and describe those situations too...
one was a new years thing, and i asked what she was doing and told her i wasn't doing anything and she said i was more then welcome to come with her wherever she ended up going, and we talked a while, and i guess somewhere along the way misunderstood me and thought i had made other plans, and ended up doing something else on new years
the other time was when i asked if she wanted to go hang out up north at my cabin (where we first hung out) and she said she wanted to, and said she was going to bring her friend, and we got all the plans made and then at the last minute she called and said her mom wouldn't let her leave the house (which is understandable, im only 17, shes 16) and just texted me like half that night
ask questions if you need more info i don't know what to think about this

Open Question: Taking the Next Step During Graduate School?
I've been with my boyfriend for about 5 years and we've talked about getting engaged, married and living together. I have a bachelor's degree, but my current position does not pay well. I plan on going back to school and majoring in something more specific (in the education field, maybe working with children with emotional issues)
Anyway, I'll probably start in September. The programs are about 2 years long. It's stressing me out. I'm thinking about being able to afford a place to live, school, a wedding and everything else. My boyfriend makes good money. But, it's so expensive where we live.
I'm wondering if any other women have had similar experiences with going to school, setting up a household (we'll be renting) and getting married.
Advice, stories and tips will be very helpful! Thank You!
