Open Question: Ceremony and reception in same ballroom?
So we live in an area where most weddings are outdoors, but we are planning on a winter wedding now. Had to postpone it a little later than original date in Sept. My question is that there is a venue that has a really nice ballroom. Our wedding is smaller so we would not need the entire ballroom for the reception and the room splits into two sides. Would it be odd to have the room split and the ceremony on one side and the reception on the other. That way they would not really be in the same room, but the same location. Here, not too many people actually get married in the hotels so I have not seen this. Is it really unusual or would it work? I just do not want the guests to have to drive from one place to another, I would really like them in the same area for the wedding and reception. Thanks. (more...)

Voting Question: Does anyone know of a CHEAP wedding reception venue in TRI- state area NY?
My Fiancee and I are getting married in Mid June and we are looking for a REALLY cheap but decent looking and decent tasting food venue in New York. We are not picky on the area as long as it is in any of the 5 boros, LI, or close by NJ. Our guest list has been cut down to about 50 people. We would also like to spend no more than 45.00 pp MAX. and if we can find cheaper even better. Any suggestions are truly appreciated including little restaurants that might hold small weddings. THANKS SO MUCH!!! (more...)

Resolved Question: Should I give up or just wait it out?
My boyfriend has made it known he is planning a big engagement surprise for me. He also said he wanted to be married by the end of 2009. Knowing weddings take planning he told me to go ahead get some ideas, look for dresses,invitations.ect. So I started looking up ideas, just to get a cost guideline. I didn't buy anything or set anything in stone. I kept saying it seems weird to look at stuff when we aren't even officially engaged, he insisted time and time again that it was fine, he even brought forward some ideas of his own. Again , nothing set in stone; no money paid out. Then last night he flips and says I started looking up stuff and planning things and it freaked him out. He says he still wants to marry but now wants to wait to look at things after the engagement. My issue now is I feel like an idiot. I asked time and time again if he was sure, and now he called me pushy.. The only thing I have done is get some price ideas on invite and dresses and started looking at possible venues. Yet I am pushy.. Its taken all the excitement out of it for me. Now when he does propose I don't know if I want a big wedding. I am afraid to get excited again. Should I just tell him to forget the engagement and keep things as they are? I am happy with my life with him as it is. Or should I just let him propose and see what happens after that? (more...)

Resolved Question: Decorating Dramas- a tad long but please help!?
I am getting married on March 1. When she found out, my sister was ever so excited to help me plan it- because although she got married twice, both were small and she missed out on all the "stuff" surrounding weddings. So I put her in charge of decorating the room we are renting at a restaurant (ie- centerpieces mainly, plus maybe flowers and the cake table). Now it should be mentioned that I live FAR from the venue, and she lives far but not as far as me. However, I have seen the venue and she hasn't. So I sent her pics, told her what I thought and what my ideas were, described the place in detail- size and shape of tables, etc. She went off and made a bunch of home-made centerpieces, and send me pics of them (at least 8). Most are HIDEOUS and nothing like what I sent her. I didn't say this of course, but I tried saying it in ways like "I like this idea, but what about if we did it this way, and added this, etc". She thinks I am untrusting and controlling and wants me to just leave her alone and do it. Does this sound bride-zilla ish to you or am I in my rights here? I don't want my reception venue to look crappy. I am wondering if there is a polite way just to ask her not to do it and I'll hire a florist/decorator and do the whole thing- despite paying more for it. Nothing is worth the relationship with my sister, and I don't a couple candles to be a sore point in the next 3 months. I would definitely get together with her to talk or etc, but she lives 12 hr drive (or 1.5 hr flight) away, which is expensive for what its worth. I understand I have already opened the flood gates by using the words "in charge", which was a mistake on my part but nonetheless words were said. I would prefer advice on what TO do vs what I should have done. Thanks :) (more...)

Voting Question: Can I use photography to negotiate with my wedding venue?
I'm looking into a wedding at a non-traditional venue in New York City, but one that wants to start doing lots of weddings. They have no pictures or information on their website, because they've only done a couple of events so far. Do you think they'd give me a bigger break on the catering if I agree to let them use my event photos to promote the venue? (more...)

Resolved Question: Bride Wars Movie.....what if it were YOU?
There's a new movie coming out on Jan 9th starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson as 27 year old bff's and brides who find out thru a clerical glitch, their weddings are booked for the same day at the same venue- a posh NYC venue....and it's WAR! lol......what would you do if unbeknown to you, you & your bff schedule your weddings on the same day (not necessarily the same place)...would you expect her to change her date, would you change your date...or just laugh it off. BTW this happened to my ex and his bff (the date, not the venue).....we just laughed it off and kept the dates, but then maybe guys see it differently... as far as the wedding plans re: my ex and his bff....it was 1973-4 and since both brides' parents were paying for the weddings, one in NJ and one out in Indianna, the respective MOBs were far more influencial in when the weddings were held, and of course they wouldn't consult with each other, as they were strangers just as the brides were, lol just the way it was back then...your wedding date was also influenced by the convenience of your family members and since your parents were footing the bill....... Resolved Question: Should I use vendors from my area or location of wedding?
I'm from a smaller city in los angeles county (so. California) but my wedding is going to be in a city of Ventura county which is about an hour and a half away from where I live. I am not sure which would be better or easier to handle. Should I try and find my vendors such as florist, dj, cake, etc. in my own home town or would it be better to seek these people and services closer to the area where my wedding will take place? I know for a destination wedding it would be necessary to use vendors from your destination place but I don't think mine really qualifies as a destination wedding. It's more of an out of town wedding. I know of some vendors in my area who are willing to travel/deliver a bit as most weddings of my local neighbors are out of town too since our town is small and probably not the nicest in LA. Some also charge extra for going out of town. The costs are not a problem for me. I am just looking for a good, maybe experienced, honest opinion of which will work out better for me and my out of town venue, for the vendors themselves (having to go out of town, or dealing with an out of town bride), and of course for the whole planning process. Thanks! (more...)

Resolved Question: What is this...I've never heard it part of a wedding?
I was just on a site that was telling people's wedding stories and this is what I saw... Venues: St Fransiscus Church; Beach reception on Renaissance Island Hometown: New York City Wedding Date: July 26, 2008 Bride?s Dress Designer: Demetrios Bridesmaids? Dresses: Butter dress by Nadia Florist: Provided by the hotel Photographer: Diana M. Lott Photography Wedding Coordinator: June Jones Honeymoon: Island hopping in Hawaii Trash the Dress Location: Various spots along the North Shore of Aruba Rob & I decided we wanted to do something different. We had gone to a bunch of weddings recently and wanted ours to be unique. After visiting Aruba in January of 2007, we fell in love with Renaissance Island. The Renaissance Aruba Hotel owns a small island ten minutes by boat off the coast! The boat picks you up from the lobby of the hotel and brings you straight there. My question is...what the hell is with the "trash the dress location"? I've never heard of this before. (more...)

Resolved Question: Do you really think your wedding is going to be unique?
I'm curious. I read all these things about how much folks go through to make their wedding different and unique and special, but in the end what do your guests really remember? if the food was good, if the entertainment was good, and if you provided the booze for them. I realize that the couple is different and perhaps there are different foods or venues, but weddings on their own are pretty cookie-cuter, don't you think? Do you really think all your nitty-gritty planning is going to make your day stand out differently from anyone else's wedding that your guests attended? Again, this is a curious thing, not bashing anyone, I'm just wondering what you think. (more...)

Resolved Question: Do you think its possible?
have a wedding on a small budget? I've been with my fiance for over 3 year now, and we're totally in love, i'll never forget the day he proposed to me! Anyway enough of the sick talk LOL! We're hardly rolling in cash, but getting married to him is more important than the materialistic side of it. Ebay wedding dress! theres loads of gorgeous dresses on there for cheap! I believe its possible, maybe> dunno! How much did your weddings cost? I think the meals for guests would be the most expensive at a choice of venue, but i suppose it could just be for closest family and friends, then a party on the night for everyone else?! Arghh i cant wait for our big day oh my god! Tuscan Sun! you are a legend and glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for all your opinions guys :) I'd rather have a more sentimental wedding with our nearest and dearest than be still paying it off in 5-10 years! (more...)
