Set Yourself on Fire
Sure they look pretty and sound pretty and all, but is this Montreal-based quartet ever going to amount to much, you know in the course of "rock history"? Very likely, if their captivating third album, Set Yourself on Fire, is any indication. Vocalists Amy Millan and Torquil Campbell have never harmonized better together, and the whole keyboard-heavy band is at that delectable place where they transcend their influences. Great pop music is not about "originality" (nor has it ever much been); it's a passionate marriage of idea and conviction. Sure, you can still hear the mark of Beulah, the Smiths, New Order, Broken Social Scene and Super Furry Animals in their songs. But the group has never been as confident with their marriage of lush, exuberant dreampop and dark, clever lyrics as they are here. --Mike McGonigal

SureFire A2 Aviator Tactical LED Max Output: Xenon: 50 lumens/LED: 3 lumens, Runtime: 60 minutes/20 hours w/White LED's 2007
Originally developed for professional aviators who needed a light bright enough to illuminate a 747's tail section from the ground, yet not so bright that it would degrade their night vision when used in the cockpit, the A2 Aviator is perfect for anyone needing a high and low beam in a single long-running flashlight. In other words, it's perfect for campers, hikers, boaters, everyone. Constructed of aerospace-grade aluminum with a super-rugged, military specification hard-anodized finish, and powered by two 3-volt lithium batteries. The 5.6-inch, 4-ounce Aviator features a high-output incandescent lamp surrounded by three LEDs set in a specially designed parabolic reflector. A unique digitally controlled two-stage switching mechanism allows the user to choose LEDs for close-up work or the high output lamp for full-power applications. Digital current regulation circuitry provides a more consistent level of incandescent light output and color temperature for the useable life of the batteries. Even after the Aviator's batteries have been depleted to the point that they will no longer power its incandescent lamp, plenty of energy remains to power the LEDs for many more hours. The digital current regulation circuitry also extends the life of the incandescent lamp by allowing for a "soft start" instead of subjecting the tungsten filament to the potentially damaging voltage spike that occurs when turning on an unregulated light. The high-output incandescent lamp produces 50 lumens of white light for 60 minutes while the three LEDs produce three lumens max output for 15 hours, followed by over 30 hours of minimal output. The patented lock-out tailcap feature allows the light to be locked in the off position to prevent unintentional activation during storage or transportation. Scratch-resistant Pyrex? lens window, removable stainless steel pocket clip. Length: 5.6 inches. Weight: 4.0 ounces (with batteries). Colors (LED): White, Red, Green.

Open Question: Weight loss help! and FAST!?
Hello, I'm Heather. I'm 5'8 and weigh 190 pounds. Here's some photographs..
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z286/heatha_featha_2007/love5.jpg
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z286/heatha_featha_2007/DSC07516.jpg
I know I don't look too big, but I am bigger in person. I'm very uncomfortable with my weight. I'm active with sports, and here is my dilemma..
During volleyball, and other sports I play I tend to only gain muscles, not really loose weight. Well now that volleyball has ended, I have gained weight back.
My question is, How can I loose weight at home, and on my own? Meaning exercises, diets, etc.
I am 16 by the way.
Thank you for taking time to read this, and thank you even more if you answer this. God Bless!

Resolved Question: Asante Samuel > Randy Moss... defense wins championships?
When the final seconds ticked off the clock in Super Bowl 42 and the Patriots had just suffered their first loss of the 2007 season I immediately began screaming "forget Moss, re-sign Asante Samuel". The Patriots are 3-0 entering the Super Bowl with a strong defense as their focal point, they are 0-1 with a killer offense. Tom Brady and Randy Moss hooked up last season for a record 23 touchdown passes, but Moss' 24th touchdown of the season turned out to be nothing more than a stepping stone to the Giants' game winning drive that was given up by an aging defense that just couldn't get the job done. Asante Samuel may have dropped an easy interception that would have ended the Super Bowl and sealed their fate as the first 19-0 team in league history, but he was still the backbone of a defense that without him was ranked dead last in redzone defense in 2008. Ellis Hobbs and Deltha O'neal gave up a total of 16 touchdown passes this season, while Asante Samuel only allowed 3, he is still playing in January, and he will also be playing in the Pro Bowl this season after playing most of the season injured. While Moss hauled in 11 touchdown passes this season, the majority of those came in blowout wins, but about 99% of them were set up by the efforts of Wes Welker. When the Pats needed Moss the most, he was either having the ball ripped out of his hands by B class corners, or he was dropping wide open passes in the endzone that would prove to be critical.
I don't know whether or not the Pats would be in the playoffs had they decided to pay Asante Samuel instead of Randy Moss, but what I do know is that it sure feels great to have analysts all over the country saying the same thing I was screaming just seconds after the Super Bowl. Thoughts?

Resolved Question: Army Enlistment/Security Clearance DQ Questions?
I am 22 and considering joining the Army when I graduate college this June. I will have a BA in Speech Communication. I am thinking heavily about pursing a MOS 35P: Cryptologic Linguist. This requires a security clearance and thus I have some concerns that may also affect my potential enlistment in general. If any of the following issues could hurt me in the enlistment/security clearance process I would appreciate some feedback. Also if anybody has experience with waivers for these issues I would like to hear about it as well
Legal Issues:
2007- Suspended License:
My license was suspended due to an unpaid speeding ticket. After a couple months I raised the money and paid it off. I was reissued a license and have had no incidents for over a year.
2006- Minor in Possession: I was found with alcohol in my motor vehicle. This occurred on a military base and was handled by the magistrate court system. I completed a 6-month diversion and paid a $35 fine.
Besides these incidents I only have 2 speeding tickets in 2004 and in 2007.
Medical Issues:
2005- Kidney Stones: I pretty sure this isn't a major issue, as I have not had any reoccurring problems, but I've heard it can be an issue when joining the military.
2003- Torn ACL/MCL in knee: Injured knee during summer sports practice, rehabbed and followed physical therapy and competed in high school sports for a year and a half after the surgery.
2003- Treated for Depression: I was diagnosed and treated for depression at age 14. I attended therapy and took anti-depressant medication for about three months. Latter was taken off medication and ended therapy. I have not had any incidents since treatment.
Other Issues- Only run of the mill stuff in my opinion (sprains, flu, broken finger while in high school)
I very much want to serve my country and would be happy with anyone with firsthand knowledge on the enlistment and security clearance process to assist. Thanks

Open Question: Serious College athlete been out for a year with groin pain, just want answers!?
My name is Taylor and im a college soccer player and i've been hurt with a groin problem since November 4th 2007. Recently ive been assigned by a doctor to go to physical therapy about a groin issue which no doctor can really find, ive been through 2 mri's, ct, and xray. But with all exams negative and me sitting out of soccer for over a year i've researched over and over on the internet and ive done some self evaluating and seemed to locate the pain in my left adductor with pain in left testicle and left lower adomenal/scrotum. The pain all started when i was running hills and overexerted myself and ended up vomiting. The next day i had significant pain and could hardly sleep at nights cause of the dull aching pain.No doctor or surgeon seems to really listen to me really about what i have to say which is understandable after the extensive years of school they've been through. Once the injury happened i went to my school clinic and they immediately labeled me as having a sports hernia and sent me to surgeon and such, surgeons would just do the cough method on me and say i just have a strained groin and give it time. I believed them and gave it time and after about 7 straight months of resting just a "strained abdomimen" and still feeling the same pain while coughing, and sudden movements actually probably even worse since my groin seemed to be tighter because i hadn't exercised, (besides the bike or olypitcal at low speed to stay in somewhat decent shape.)I decided to just start exercising running playing soccer every now and then, and i could feel my groin, the pain was there but once it got loose it felt okay but mid way through it'd start to get bad, especially after and was sensitive and sore for a couple days, but since the numberous doctors and surgeons turned my away i didn't have much to lose. I eventually stopped cause i couldn't take the aching pain, however it still has never went away even when im not exercising for an exenstive period of time.Anyhow i was assigned 4 weeks of therapy 3 days a week and i was told if my groin problem didn't get any better from physical therapy (which it hasn't, and im in my last week of therapy) then they are going to perform surgery where they are going to go in and just search for the problem and hope they find it and can fix it supposebly. Im a big sports fan so i've known about you from hearing about athletes needing sports hernia surgery. From what i noticed not many doctors believe in a sports hernia so they don't even really give it any chance. Anyhow i thought i would send you an email and see what you had to say about it, it's probably hard to make evaluations over the internet so i understand, sorry this is all crammed together and thank you for time, i just am interested in what you think about the situation. Coaches are frustrated with me, all i want to do is play soccer again.Thank you again.

Anyhow i thought i would send you an email and see what you had to say about it, it's probably hard to make evaluations over the internet so i understand, sorry this is all crammed together and thank you for time, i just am interested in what you think about the situation.Thank you again.

Open Question: Are blacks more intelligent than other races ( Asians,Whites, Etc( ?
Even today in many parts of the world formal schooling is inaccessible to many people; being more of a privilege than an expectation in some places. Therefore, the best measures of intelligence should be unrelated to literary pencil and paper multiple-choice tasks. Skills like Quick decision making, cooperativeness, orienting efficacy, the capacity to represent features on a vast scale, and short-term strategic considerations are certainly abilities that would have been vital for our hunter-gatherer relatives in the past, and are still highly relevant in today?s modern environments. These abilities are also critical for successful athletic competitive performance, and particularly within the realm of team sports (Horgan and Tienson, 1992).
rofessional athletes and especially those involved in team sports must operate within highly dynamic and multi-dimensional situational contexts (Vickers, 2007) requiring a very complex set of cognitive skills (see Kioumourtzoglou et al, 1998; Horgan and Tienson, 1992). Often these skills are close in relationship with the kinds of skills that, in the ?not so distant? past, helped to make our ancestors successful hunter and gathers. Why is this relevant, one might ask? Well, hunting is assumed to have been in practice for 99% of human prehistory and is thus believed to have provided the ?master behavior pattern? of the human species (Herlin, 2003). Intelligence in the past was never a measure of one?s academic aptitude or potential for formal schooling, but was instead a measure of one?s potential for real life survival, and often this survival depended on the same kind intelligences and abilities employed by athletes during competition. Formal schooling of the kind familiar to most living in the West today did not become a part of people?s everyday lives until the early 20th century.
Studies of reaction time in athletes and non athletes generally find athletes to out perform non athletes in these tasks. Reaction time is believed to be a good indicator of performance in sports (Kaur et al, 2006). This may explain why Blacks athletes can be found overrepresented in many of the world?s most highly selective high performance sports (e.g. Football and Basketball). Kaur et al (2006), found quicker reaction times in athletes as compared to control groups, and attributed this to improved concentration, alertness, better muscular co-ordination and improved performance in speed and accuracy tasks among athletes (Kaur et al, 2006). Kamin (1995) reported that in tasks of choice reaction time, blacks in 3 out of three studies out performed white individuals and Asian indivuiduals.
I have more statistics to back it up.
African-born blacks comprise about 16 percent of the U.S. foreign-born black population (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 2000), and are ?considerably? more educated than other immigrants. The vast majority of these immigrants come from minority white countries in East and West Africa (e.g. Kenya and Nigeria). While less than 2 percent originate from North or South Africa (CIA World Factbook, 2004; Yearbook of immigration Statistics, 2003). In an analysis of Census Bureau data by the Journal of Blacks in higher education, African immigrants to the United States were found more likely to be college educated than any other immigrant group, which included those from Europe, North America and Asia (see also Nisbett, 2002; U.S. Bureau of the Census, 2000). African immigrants have also been shown to be more highly educated than any native-born ethnic group including white and Asian Americans (Logan & Deane, 2003; Williams, 2005; The Economist, 1996; Arthur, 2000; Selassie, 1998; Nisbett, 2002).
Crawford-Nutt (1976) found that African black students enrolled in westernized schools scored higher on progressive matrix tests than did American white students.
1981) showed Ghanaian adults in another study to score higher on the same supposedly ?culture fair? intelligence test, than did Irish adults; scores were 80 (Ghanaian) and 78 (Irish), respectively.
1981) showed Ghanaian adults in another study to score higher on the same supposedly ?culture fair? intelligence test, than did Irish adults; scores were 80 (Ghanaian) and 78 (Irish), respectively.
the United States, when matched for IQ with Whites, American Blacks have been shown to demonstrate superior ?Working Memory? (Nijenhuis et al., 2004). This is an interesting finding, as African Americans are typically taught by less qualified teachers (e.g. non-certified teachers and teachers with limited experience) than their white counterparts, and are provided with less challenging school work (Hallinan 1994; Diamond et al., 2004; Uhlenberg and Brown 2004). In Chicago, for example, the vast majority of schools placed on academic probation as part of the district accountability efforts were majority African-American and low-income (Diamond and Spillane 2004). Thus, it is somewhat surprising that African Americans should outperform white Americans on any portion of a paper and pencil test designed to mimic the structures of western style schooling (Richardson, 2000, 2002).

First, I have overcome more learning challenges compared to the average student. For example, during my freshman year of high school I was assigned to attend a learning center class three days a week because teachers determined that extra help with my homework and test-taking skills would be a benefit to me. By the end of my freshman year, however, a reevaluation revealed that I no longer required extra assistance. My diligence and sustained efforts to adopt the learning center?s problem solving strategies were successful and provided me with the valuable tools necessary to apply towards my studies. This just proves that when I encounter any difficult tasks, my hard work and determination will help me achieve concrete results.
Second, during my junior year, I faced certain medical challenges that impacted my academic life and temporarily deterred me from maximizing my potential both as a student and as an athlete. In October of 2007, my cardiologist advised me to cease all physical activity until
further notice because I had an abnormally enlarged heart and was diagnosed with pre-hypertension. As a result, I was not able to complete the cross-country season and was restricted to homebound activities. This was a difficult time for me. Nonetheless, my resilience and optimism helped me
maintain a positive outlook about my condition. For example, I focused my energy on other things including schoolwork and improving my second quarter grades. In March, my doctor gave the clearance allowing me to once again participate in physical activity. Despite having only a short amount of time to prepare for my cross-country season, I was able to improve my running times?a feat that I achieved exclusively through dedication and determination since I was committed to putting in extra time at the track to get myself back into shape. Although during my junior year I was dealing with the added stress placed on me by my unexpected medical crises, I remained hopeful and was able to stay focused towards my academic goals. After being cleared to run, I pursued my running goals with the same vigor as I demonstrated in the classroom. My secrets to overcoming any challenge, whether it was big or small, have been my focus, commitment and hard work.
I sent Northeastern an email and ask them about the interview and they said that they dont do interviews but if you come for a visit you can talk to an admissions counselor. Would that be a good idea in my situation. This is what i plan on doing. I know im writing alot but i want advice because i feel that i am a viable candiate for Northeastern. I plan on going to visit northeastern to get to talk to the admissions counselor, i plan on writing a letter which i'll let you guys see it later, im tryin my best in school to get above a 91 from my first quarter grade senior year, i want to send them an email with my new accomplishments. Currently i want to major in accounting and i was selected as the chief financial officer of a student run business and i plan on applying as a position such as vice president or treasurer for a decca position. If i am able to do these things i feel that i would have an advantage. Should i be thinking this?

Open Question: Should I consider trading my truck in?
I own a black 2001 Dodge Ram 1500. It is a Sport/Offroad-Edition, 4 wheel drive, and it has the 5.9L v8. The truck has 115,000 miles on it. I bought this truck in July of 2007, and have put a lot of money into restoring it. Today, the truck is in immaculate condition; the paint is flawless with no dents, new tires, a brand new transmission, a very good running motor, and lots of performance/exterior goods (cold air intake, headers, flowmaster cat back exhaust, limo tint, new headlights and tail lights, new bed liner etc. etc.). The truck just finished having a new transmission installed, so obviously at this point, the truck is in the best shape it is ever going to be in. Should I consider trading this truck in for a newer truck ('05 and up?). I love my truck, but if it was a smart decision to get rid of it while it has lower mileage, and a new transmission, I would do so. Thanks for all of your opinions.
