I rent a condo in NJ and my roof has been leaking since September. It has made the apartment some what uninhabitable and ruined my personal property. I notified my Landlord on 9/10/08 about the leak. Since then the condo association sent a maintnence man ( not a roofer) to look and try to fix the problem. Of course he never fixed it and the leak got worse. I notified the landlord at least 6 times and nothing was ever done. On 12/21/08 I sent a certified letter stating that I would cease rent payment until it was fixed and that I would be putting in a claim for a rent abatement on all rents paid from date of notification (less the ample time alloted for him to fix it ). On 12/24/08 Landlord left me a voice message that he got my letter and acknowledge the leak problem since september. He then said that it was not his problem because the management company wont let him on the roof and my beef was with them. As of today 1/7/09 the roof is still leaking. I have not paid rent and dont intend to until it is fixed. Honestly if he was living in the apartment , he would have made sure it was fixed a long time ago. ( I had a similiar problem when I first moved in, the AC wasnt working, it took him 2 months to fix and that was not a management issue. Plus I had to carry the ac unit up and down stairs). In a court of law does his claim of the Condo Management being responsible , hold any water ( no punn intended). There is nothing in the lease about condo being responsible and as far as I am concerned he has responsibility to me as a tenant. If Condo Managment prevents that responsibility then thats his problem. Any answers or further advise would be greatly appreciated (more...)

I'm not on the lease but I've been paying rent to my roommate (who lived there before me and is on the lease) for the last 3 months. Over the last month, apartments above us caused leaks, making water drip from our ceiling and bulge our walls, our thermostat stopped working, and a few more minor inconveniences happened. Because of this, she said she understands if I don't want to pay the last month's rent. Then yesterday, she said that she's looking for someone to take my room for the remainder of the lease (end of the month) because she can't afford to have me there rent-free. And she's giving me til Friday to move out or pay in full (which I need for the new place). I didn't get anything in writing (yes, I'm stupid), but I'm hoping that she needs to give me 30 days' notice. Does living in an apartment complex change things? oops, I meant to mention that I'm in Colorado. (more...)

I already have 2 months looking for an apartment for rent in Queens, Brooklyn, Long island and I have not found any.I search every day in Craigslist, Yahoo, RDNY, google, Realtors,etc. I think I have looked everywhere. When I try contacting the people that posts in craigslist THEY NEVER PICK UP THE PHONE NEITHER CALL BACK.Realtors always say "if we find anything we will call you" and never do. Im so sick of this situation and the problem is I have to get the hell out of here ASAP. Im looking for a 2 bedroom apt. between 1000-1200 rent in any of these areas for 2 adults and 1 year old. (with or without public assistance). Im so frustrated that im about to give up. If you people can give a suggestion about what else should I try please I will appreciate it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I asked the same question last night, but I didn't get the answers I was looking for.... Anyways, I'm 22 and currently unemployed. I live in an upstairs apartment, with my boyfriend. Anyways, downstairs was once a car selling business. Now, the space is empty.I was thinking about buying and selling on ebay, but that space would be a good spot for a resale shop. I live in a small town and there are several resale shops in town, not including goodwill. I live behind the public square. I would not have to pay rent, but I'm thinking utilities, taxes, and for a business license. Does anyone have some suggestions or comments? I'd like to hear from someone with a resale shop as well....? (more...)
