Marilyn Monroe - The Final Days
Marilyn Monroe - The Final Days In The Final Days, producer-director Patty Ivins chronicles Marilyn Monroe's final, aborted feature film, Something's Got to Give, which was ultimately shut down after the star was dismissed from the production. Beyond Monroe's fragile emotional and physical health, this well-crafted profile examines the financial crisis facing her studio as well as the mounting frustration of meticulous director George Cukor and his cast, including costar Dean Martin, as Monroe's absences drove the shoot over budget. The 2001 documentary, which was previously available only as part of The Diamond Collection, concludes with a 40-minute reconstruction of footage completed for the feature, which would subsequently be reshot as a vehicle for Doris Day and James Garner, Move Over, Darling. --Sam Sutherland

Biography - Humphrey Bogart
Biography - Humphrey Bogart Humphrey Bogart's screen career followed an offbeat trajectory from villain to antihero to romantic icon, an evolution that underscores the acting craft beneath that familiar persona. This well-crafted profile from A&E's Biography series brackets that compelling arc by chronicling Bogart's success in establishing a public image that was genuinely against type, given his origins in a privileged New York family, and his early stage career in roles far removed from the gangsters, gunsels, and blue-collar Everymen that dominated his years toiling on the Warner Bros. Pictures studio lot as a character actor.

His pivotal late 1930s and early 1940s triumphs, including signature private eyes Sam Spade (in The Maltese Falcon) and Philip Marlowe (The Big Sleep), and the cynical yet ultimately noble Rick Blaine, the world-weary romantic hero of Casablanca, are placed in the context of the actor's own pilgrimage toward more complex character roles. His fabled romance with model-turned-actress Lauren Bacall, captured onscreen in To Have and Have Not and The Big Sleep, and Bogart's significance as one of the earliest stars to venture outside studio contracts through his own production company, are also covered, as is his long association with director John Huston. On a lighter note, we glimpse his charter role in forging the original Beverly Hills "rat pack" that would later be associated with Frank Sinatra.

The 50-minute documentary features film clips, archival stills and footage, and interviews with peers and critics, including critic Michael Medved, screenwriters Joe Hyams and Julius Epstein, and actors Rod Steiger and Theodore Bikel. --Sam Sutherland

Bogie: A Celebration of the Life and Films of Humphrey Bogart
Bogie: A Celebration of the Life and Films of Humphrey Bogart
In the fifty years since his death in 1957 Humphrey Bogart has firmly established his position as one of the iconic figures in the history of cinema, a star of the same magnitude as Monroe, Gable or Chaplin, and the personaification of one of Hollywood's most enduring genres, film noir. In this lavishly illsutrated survey of Bogart's life and work, Richard Schickel assesses his career and enduring legacy while George Perry provides a detailed review of the films he made over three decades, with a particular focus on his key roles. Published with the authorization of the Estate of Humphrey Bogart, this official celebration is a fitting tribute to a much-loved star. Having started out playing a series of supporting roles and "B" movie leads in routine gangster films, Bogart first emerged as a figure to be reckoned with in High Sierra before starring as the private eye Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon in 1941. Then, two years later, came Casablanca, the film in which, for the first time, he was allowed to show the humanity that lay behind the mask of the laconic, wisecracking tough guy. A humanity that was fully realized in the part of Charlie Allnut in The African Queen for which he won an Oscar in 1952. In all, Bogart appeared in over seventy-five films, and consistently lived up to his own definition of stardom -- "you have to drag your weight at the box office and be recognized wherever you go" -- and was later adopted as a cult figure by a new generation of fans, who saw him as an existentialist hero. Five decades after his death, he remains an invigorating presence in our imaginations. While Bogart's magnetism is to this day unmatched on screen, his private life was equally entrancing. He had already been married three times when he met Lauren Bacall on the set of Passage to Marseille and told her, "I saw your test. We're going to have a lot of fun together." She provided a much-needed stabilizing influence to his life and together they formed one of the most celebrated on- and off-screen couples. They had a son and daughter and appeared together in four movies including Key Largo and The Big Sleep. On the night Bogart won his Oscar for The African Queen, Bacall reflected that "Bogie had everything now-- a happy marriage, a son, another child on the way, an ocean racing yacht [the legendary Santana], success, and the peak of recognition in his work."

Bogart
Bogart It's the season of battling Bogarts: two biographies, each worthwhile for different reasons. If you want a leisurely, formidably well-documented account of Humphrey Bogart's legendary screen career and four marriages (including a happy final one to Lauren Bacall), this is it. A. M. Sperber conducted some 200 interviews with people who knew the actor before his death in 1994; Eric Lax draws on her seven years of research to create a nuanced, in-depth, elegantly written portrait of the man recently dubbed Hollywood's greatest star by Premiere magazine.

Names You Never Remember, With Faces You Never Forget
Names You Never Remember, With Faces You Never Forget Names. compiles ten years' worth of interviews with as many character actors. These are the supporting players who have made generations of moviegoers blurt out "I know that actor- Who is that? I've seen him a million times!" These actors' identities have continually eluded most moviegoers. But their unforgettable faces and personalities are another story. Included are exhaustive interviews with: - R. G. Armstrong- Burly, prolific western star-- A perennial movie sheriff, Sam Peckinpah regular, and, unrecognizably, Dick Tracy's arch-nemesis, Pruneface! - Dick Bakalyan- The pugnacious Crown Prince of the Juvenile Delinquent film, familiar Disney movie player, and co-star of films as disparate as Ray Milland's Panic in Year Zero! and Roman Polanski's Chinatown. - Don Pedro Colley- Imposing, regal co-star of Beneath the Planet of the Apes (as the telepathic mutant inquisitor), THX-1138 (as a hologram), and Sugar Hill (as Baron Samedi, king of the zombies). - Royal Dano- In his last interview, Dano recalls his extensive career, working with Alfred Hitchcock, John Huston, Nicholas Ray, Jack Arnold, and dozens of other Hollywood notables. - Jonathan Haze- As part of director Roger Corman's stock company, Haze achieved cinematic immortality as the luckless "Seymour" in Corman's original The Little Shop of Horrors. Besides his multifarious work with Corman, Haze wrote AIP's manic Invasion of the Star Creatures, and worked behind the cameras with the likes of John Wayne. - Bo Hopkins- A cinematic stalwart of the '70s, whose credits include The Wild Bunch (his debut), The Getaway, Monte Walsh, American Graffiti, and The Day of the Locust. Another perennial movie sheriff! - L. Q. Jones- A western, war, and Peckinpah film staple, and director of the cult science fiction classic, A Boy and His Dog. His recent credits include Casino, The Edge, and The Mask of Zorro. (Also, quite possibly, the funniest character actor alive.) - Buck Kartalian- Diminutive former wrestler and body-builder, best remembered as "Julius," the ape jailer of Planet of the Apes. Kartalian's film work ranges from major Hollywood fare (Mr. Roberts, Cool Hand Luke) to some of the wackiest exploitation films ever (The Acid Eaters, Please Don't Eat My Mother!, and Devil's Angels.) - Paul Koslo- Laconic action star of the '70s into the '90s: The Omega Man, Mr. Majestyk, The Losers, Cleopatra Jones, Joe Kidd, ad infinitum. - Marc Lawrence- One of the screen's greatest gangsters, with a career spanning well over 150 feature films and eight decades! Illustrated with over 100 photographs, Names. chronicles the lives of the unsung character men who often outshone the stars that surrounded them. Includes never-before-published interview material.

Resolved Question: What happen to Our Music? What happen to American Culture?
Am I the only one who feels the culture is becoming repulsive? It's so hard for me to watch anything but Colbert Report, Adult Swim, and UFC. I want to watch TV, listen to the radio, indie bands, but it's all so sub-human. MUSIC IS OUR CULTURE. When did the 13 year old girls take over the industries? When gay guys took over? You can't even blame gay Hollywood people because they can't all want to be a Kenya West, or A Disney kid!!!..? BUT IT"S ALL female dancing in a cocktail-party crap. What the hell has happen to music and why is it all sound like a fu@^*ing hair salon?? Why do 18 yr old kids listen to 90's music so much now? 1. Men, what happen to them? When did we start importing Australian actors to be our young tuff guys? What the hell, do you have to be a fake white gangster, or tattooed poser to act like a man? When did being a man become the female stereotypes and not just achieving strength and balance -- (see Humphrey Bogart) 2. Rock music (nickel back, seether, 7 dust. etc.) Is not rock at all but weird country music on steroids, with screams and wanna-bee Eddie Vedder solos. And these boy bands? Coldplay is a boy band for indie chicks! And god are the lyrics written by the guys who do Christina Aguleras stuff! Oh and death metal is poser wild man music (weak), so is every hair band throw-back. The hair bands were cool (sometimes) but I thought it was agreed that Poison was NOT COOL! 3. Country Music? When the hell did it all become nastolgia for the "good old days" and propaganda for the wealthy. I remember growing up it was about life and love and just being "you". 4. Bad people. Are there enough self-obsessed, well dressed, scum on TV and in hip-hop, and news now? Am I the only one who can see they are going to effect the kids with their lack of style and lack of grace. 5. rap is dead? When did it survive without rock. Its a rip off of other genre. So if it's dead it's because music sucks now! 6. Comedians. When did all comedy become about making fun of people? When did we become so cool that we can stand back and be pretensious, racist, a bully? what's wrong with silly? Why so dry? 7.Women. When did women start thinking they were tuff? Like when they try to fight men in clubs or when they show no grace but talk like boys to each other "I'll, mess you up Biaatch" I live in LA. I'm 29 years old. Am I too old, or is this apparent to everyone they are trying to make us stupid and greedy for some reason???? "So you think you can tell heaven from hell, green skys from pain, a smile from a vail? did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?.. Did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?" ...the same old fears...wish you were here. (more...)
