Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor
Let's see...a rap artist is hyped insufferably, his music is leaked incessantly, his album is delayed indefinitely, the hype grows, rinse, repeat. Welcome to the world of pop music in 2006, when "unauthorized" Internet seepage can somehow manage to simultaneously make and break an aspiring young performer. Lupe Fiasco's unfinished debut CD was slathered all over the Web for months, like some sort of Lonelygirl15, before finally seeing the legitimate light of day. That said, the Chicago-bred rapper, who rose to prominence thanks to his "Touch the Sky" collab with Kanye West, is hardly a slouch. His skittering, low-key rapping style is truly distinctive, and his lyrics are mostly thoughtful and creative without being heavy-handed. Despite frequent comparisons to "thinking man's rappers" from Tribe and De La Soul to Nas, the most apt comparison might be to Kanye West himself: Like West, Fiasco rises above the trappings of the street without sounding condescending or out of touch, and his sound has the same "timeless" quality--partly old-school, partly of the moment. Yet somehow, Food & Liquor isn't quite a home run either; it lacks fire and it cries out for an infectious track or two that really sticks. Still, Lupe distinguishes himself as an artist to watch. --Marc Greilsamer

Food in the Belly
Based on musical transgressions committed by the likes of Jamiroquai--well, okay, only Jamiroquai-some might say the didgeridoo has no place in rock 'n' roll. An avowed fan of Paul Simon's Graceland, however, Xavier Rudd continues to seek redemption for the much-maligned instrument from his Australian homeland on his sixth full-length release, Food in the Belly, an earthy collection of roots-rock tunes that also sees the one-man-band champion everything from wind chimes and tubas to ankle bells and tablas. On slow-percolating tracks like "Messages" and "Pockets of Peace," the part-time surfer seems to share not only Jack Johnson's laidback delivery style but passive preachiness: "So speak out loud/ Of the things you are proud/ And if you love this coast/ Then keep it clean as it hopes." Fans of Michael Franti and Ben Harper wouldn't go amiss. --Aidin Vaziri

Open Question: Is there an alternative community in Salt Lake City?
I'm thinking about moving to Salt Lake City with my boyfriend and neither of us are very religious and are certainly not Mormons. Although I do respect everyone's right to have their own religion I'm wondering if it will be comfortable for us to live there. Are there yoga studios, health food stores etc.? I would love to know. Thanks!

Open Question: How can I start eating healthier?
I'm not fat or anything. I swear! I'm 14, 5ft 5in, and I weigh about 105. (So I'm not fat! :P)
So my question is how can I start eating healthier. I eat WAY to much junk food. For example, today I ate 2 cupcakes, (they were small, and it was for a b-day party) and 2 popsicles.
So here are my basic questions.
- How can I start eating healthier, what are the steps to eating healthier.
- What are some healthier alternatives to sugary snacks?
- (I am always craving sugar) How can I stop craving the sugar?
Thanks! I really need help with this! I don't want it all to come back and bite me in the butt when I'm 40 and am still eating like this and gaining weight! Hahaha! Thanks so much!

Open Question: Is starving yourself the best alternative?
I'm having a discussion with a friend. He's saying that starving yourself is a perfectly healthy way to lose weight. On the other hand, I'm telling him that some good ole' exercise and healthy food consumption is the way to go.
So, is starving yourself a good idea?

Open Question: Just in need of some general help..?
I don't eat a lot naturally. I'm more of a "bunch of small things than the three big things a day" kinda person. I eat pretty healthy. I generally have cereal in the morning (isn't eating breakfast supposed to be really good for you?), I like fruit and I like those V8 Fusion things. But like most people, i like my junk foods. Are there any good alternatives to that?
I get pretty moderate activity everyday. What are you supposed to do when it's cold and snowing and sleeting out?
What are some things I can do to (i'm looking to lose about 20 lbs)
And one last thing.
I'm 15, so would you say I'm pretty much done growing? I can't count on growing up to thin me out anymore can I?
Sorry it's so lengthy

Open Question: Im in the air force and in the dorm i live in we cant have hot plates of any sort?
im tired of eating out all the time, due to how much it costs, and i dont wanna live on McDonalds just because its relatively cheap. but since i cant have anything but a microwave in my room i dont know what to do. i mean yea there are microwavable foods, but only so many and i dont like to eat the same things repetitively. so in my situation what would be the economical alternative to eating out?
we do have a "dining facility" but i tend to be somewhat picky in what i eat, not like super picky, but to the point of it not being worth going there because half the time i go in and see what they're serving and walk out, so i dont bother going in there any more, plus i work an odd shift and catching the dining facility open is kind of hard, and standing in line for 30 mins waiting for food to cook doesnt help either

Open Question: Are you finding it easy being vegan?
I am, though it's only been a few days.
I think it's exciting finding all the new foods that are healthy and delicious, like this snack bar with seeds, oats and chocolate I got today.
I can't wait to find alternatives like vegan cheese so I can have all my old favorites again. :)
Oh and I've lost 1lb. o.0

Open Question: How can I stop being so cynical, and too serious about everything? ?
How can I learn to be more positive?
Im so Grumpy and sarcastic about everything the whole time! I bring myself and other people around me down the whole time.
This is affecting my work and my personal life.
Today my boss told me to be more positive and open minded about new ideas and if I flag problems, I have to wave the solution too.
A guy in my life recently said to me that he would never make any displays/gesture of affection towards me because he is scared that I will just shoot him down and make fun of him.
I always snigger at things like "cheesy" red roses and pathetic romantic ballads e.g. Jack Johnson ect.
With friends I criticise things like TV and mainstream shows like "Sex in the City" because I consider these a dummbd -down content.
With everything generally, I find faults. Its really hard to impress me.
Even I cant live up to my own expectations.
What can I do to lighten up a bit and stop being so miserable and hard nosed all the time? I dislike so much mainstream stuff - my tastes are waaay to alternative/high-brow/elaborate for me to be able to lead a normal life practicably.
E.g.
I hate Fast Food - Love haut cuisine and things like oysters, blue cheese ect.
I hate mainstreatm TV like Lost/Sex in the city - Love twisted things like Louis Theroux documentaries/Peep Show/Classic Films
I hate classic package holidays and commercialised places like Ibza - Love backpacking in Costa Rica or Shopping in Harajuku-Tokyo
I try to remind myself to be more positive but always forget and start doing the usual negativity thing.
Please help.

Open Question: Are all vegetarians abstinent from meat because they are only against animal cruelty and/or health freaks?
Because I'm a vegetarian because I'm against murder, plain and simple. If there wasn't any animal cruelty in the world, I still wouldn't eat meat because I view all life as equal and now that we have the technology to healthily abstain from meat, it seems to me that it's selfish to continue eating it.
I mean, what other reason is there to kill another living being for food when you can easily acquire the same nutrients elsewhere? Because it tastes good, right? And because it's easier.
I understand eating meat for medical reasons. Maybe your anemic or allergic to alternative sources of protein. But that's the only ethical excuse I can think of.
I'm not trying to be preachy or force my opinions on anyone, I'm just putting it out there and asking if anyone agrees.
InSA[|\|E],
I realize that since the beginning we've been omnivores. I also grasp the concept of evolution and the food chain.
Just so you know, we call ourselves the superior species because we have the ability to be compassionate and think on a higher level than most other animals.
This is why I think it's selfish to kill and eat them. We understand the concept of death, yet billions of people disregard it every day as they eat meat.
They know a living being was murdered to give them the pleasure of eating it, and yet they don't care enough to stop because it tastes good.
I think it's incredibly narrow and annoying to cling to the food chain as a petty excuse to reject positive change.
While it's fine that you believe in eating meat, I don't and I just told you why. I don't discriminate against anyone. I didn't say meat eaters suck. I said they have a selfish tendency. I don't think I'm better than them because we all have selfish tendencies in one way or another.
Sludgecat,
Killing some things is unavoidable.
Yes. I eat plants. Yes, they are technically living. Yes. I kill bacteria.
But do they have hearts, brains, nervous systems.....? No. That's where it's different.
