Guilt By Association
Guilt By Association Can't get enough ironic covers of familiar radio hits? Try out Engine Room Recordings' Guilt by Association, which captures indie notables, such as Devendra Banhart, Jim O'Rourke, and Superchunk, covering the likes of Eddie Money, the Spice Girls, and Shania Twain. Petra Haden's all-voices, no-instruments version of "Don't Stop Believin'" leads off the album for a reason--her voice mimics every detail of the original down to the guitar solo, and the result is pretty close to extraordinary (surely the Journey catalog is rich enough to warrant an entire album of a capella covers?). Luna finds the slink beneath the bubble gum of Paula Abdul's "Straight Up," and the Concretes redeem '90s boy band Take That's "Back For Good," turning in a version that's as warm and sleepy as the original was shiny and plastic. If there's a flaw in Guilt by Association, it's the lack of cohesion that can plague such compilations, and you almost wish the bands had stuck to a narrower range of artists and songs, but any collection that covers everyone from Cher, to Fall Out Boy, to the kids from High School Musical is bound to hit on a guilty pleasure for just about everyone. --Ben Heege

Resolved Question: Would this be a good schedule change?
I've gotten a job at Wal-Mart (unfortunately) about 4 months ago, I don't like it, but I've gotten used to it. Now it's beginning to take a toll on my conscience. My stress level is rising because of the amount of studying I have to do for finals, and this job is seriously taking up most of my time. I merely need a job to get out of the house, but now I feel like reverting back to my old lifestyle. I have a friend named Joey who was in the same situation as I am now, but he was able to change his work schedule to weekends only (Fri, Sat, and Sun for 8 hours each), and the weekdays for school and whatever else, I didn't think that was possible though, I was spellbound by that. He is unloader, and I'm cashier, but I was wondering if a weekend-only schedule change is possible for me. Because my next semester classes are supposed to be worse than they are now. I'm also involved in numerous clubs such as the International Honor Society, HALO (Hispanic American Leadership Organization), Student Government Association, and Poetry Club, and most of the meetings are held during weekdays. Am I able to change my schedule into weekends only? If so, who do I talk to? If not, what are other possible alternatives? (more...)

Resolved Question: I am a black guy with gauges, snakebite lip piercings and multiple tattoos, am I still considered black?
As the title says I have 9/16 ear gauges, snakebite lip piercings, and multiple tattoos including a half-sleeve on my right arm which I get worked on each week. I engage in "normal black" activities, listen to all forms of African-American music, am a sneaker head and collect fitted New Eras; hell, I even breakdance and DJ sometimes. In the town where I attend school (Wilmington, NC), I'm apparently the only black guy who looks the way I do and makes no distinction between his friends of color and friends of the light. I hang around those in the LGBT community and those who have strong opinions opposing them. Along with the aforementioned Hip-Hop/R&B, I listen to Hardcore, Indie, Alternative, New-Wave, sometimes electronic/techno music as well, and don't mind going to shows. Without even going into the books that I read (The Perks of Being a Wallflower sits on my shelf alongside Holler if You Hear Me: The Search for Tupac Shakur), the girls I date (I was once apart of the Hindu Student Association and dated one of the girls in it as well, pissed EVERYBODY off), and other apparently offensive criteria and activities, I'm wondering: Am I still considered black? I would say "Yes," as I still get followed by cops and such, but the African-American community here looks at me sideways and the White community looks at me as if they are calling me a uber-poser and Uncle Tom (other communities just look at me). What should I do? I feel alone alot, even with my friends. I don't want everyone to look like me or even act like me by any means...but I just sometimes, want something other than the constant new animal-like intrigue and attention that comes with meeting me ("Just look at him!"). I always get talked to as if I'm in the process of choosing which "side" I want to officially be apart of, which community I want to identify and integrate with fully. Resolved Question: Any Other Plastic Avoiders Out There?
In the spring of 2007 I began to read articles about Bisphenol-A, or BPA. It is a synthetic estrogen used in many types of plastics. After reading the results of the studies published to date, and the news articles, I began to rid my home of plastics. BPA is found in the hard clear plastics, like Nalgene bottles, baby bottles, and in the lining of cans. It is also found in "microwaveable" food trays, and plastic cutting boards, among others. When the plastics are heated (like in transport, or in microwaving), when the food contains a high fat or a high liquid content, and when the plastic is abraded or scratched, the BPA seeps into the food/liquid at higher rates. The canned food industry (including soda manufacturers) have said that their is NO alternative to BPA and, to the best of my knowledge, there is no short term plan to remove it. It supposedly protects the contents of the cans against rust that might be caused if the cans were dented. BPA is linked to estrogen disruption in laboratory animals, and results primarily in problems with the reproductive systems (including cancers, infertility, feminization of male genitalia, and early onset puberty, etc.). Approximately 96% of Americans have BPA in their bloodstreams. A year and a half ago, a group of independent scientists decided that the government was not doing enough to inform the public about the research, so they banned together and released their own warnings. This is almost unheard of in the scientific community. Since that time, Canada has instituted a ban, and many manufacturers and retailers are searching for alternatives. There are now BPA free baby bottles. The American Chemical Association has said recently (again) that there is no risk and the FDA has been totally ineffectual offering information to the public so that we can make informed decisions. My response: I've continued to read about BPA in the news and have not used plastic food storage containers for a year and a half. The transition was rough, but once complete, using glass seems just as easy. I avoid canned goods to the best of my ability as almost all cans are lined with that white plastic coating -- I have found a couple of brands of canned tomato products that do not have it. I also avoid canned sodas and drink out of stainless steel water bottles. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel published last Sunday the results of their tests of BPA leaching into food products. One of the culprits was the cans of plastic infant formula. I WISH I had known this when I was using BPA bottles and formula for my dd. Now it looks as if she may be at risk for precocious puberty and I am so ANGRY. I'm angry that this information has been around for such a long time and, unless one worked at a research institute where studies were being conducted, or just stumbled upon this information (as I did but not until fairly recently), one would just go on microwaving in plastic food storage containers, using plastic wrap in the microwave, drinking healthy water but in nalgene bottles, and using products containing this chemical for our BABIES! Honestly, my trust in OUR food supply has been seriously eroded. Anyone else heard of this? Anyone else taking precautions? (more...)
