Let the Devil Wear Black
Let the Devil Wear Black "There's something rotten in the City of Angels," claims the video box. Sure enough, under the dysfunctional dealings of a family business is the story of Hamlet retooled for the twilight world of nocturnal L.A. Jack (Jonathan Penner, who cowrote the screenplay with director Stacy Title) is spending a joyless break from graduate school to deal with his father's sudden death. He's disconnected from his unstable lover (Mary-Louise Parker), the daughter of family lawyer Philip Baker Hall, and his mom (Jacqueline Bisset), a withdrawn alcoholic who has let his "2-watt" Uncle Carl (Jamey Sheridan) manage the family fortune. When a mysterious figure tells him that Carl murdered his father, Jack's unsettled feelings are thrown into a restless rage. This official Slamdance 1999 selection is never as moving or insightful as Michael Almereyda's Wall Street Hamlet with Ethan Hawke, but Title makes the most of this free adaptation, and drives the film with the simmering energy of a frantic, wound-up hero. It's surprising how well the story lends itself to the double-crossing and devious betrayal of modern neo-noir, only periodically stopping for a Shakespearean rumination (the "Alas, poor Yorick" speech becomes a meditation on a skull fragment, the remains of a brutal execution-style murder). Title makes the fatal architecture of Shakespeare work beautifully and unpretentiously in a modern context, creating a modest but satisfying gritty little thriller. --Sean Axmaker

Open Question: rate my story plz!!!?
Okay, the illiterate titles get more hits, so.... Please, tell me what you think of my story. Here's the description and part of one of the chapters. If you steal it, I'll personally make sure you brun in hell. Either way, it's copywrited, so you'll go to jail. "Love can appear in the strangest forms, situations, and places. In my new boylove story, ?Bite of Fangs?, love certainly does appear in the strangest of people. In the story, the young, handsome Jude Baker meets the perfect, mature Dr. Marcus Jones, and his life begins to turn upside-down. When he meets Dr. Jones, he is bewildered by his cool, pale skin, perfect features, and long, strawberry blonde hair. When Dr. Jones ends up beating him and abducting him from his loved ones, Jude starts realizing that no human being can be that perfect. The secrets of Jude?s past start overwhelming his life. ??Bite of Fangs? is an erotic story about two males, so it is rated M, and not recommended for people offended by gay love. It is also a vampire/werewolf fantasy story. The form of vampires and werewolves that I chose are like the ones that are quite popular in the series ?Twilight?. ?Bite of Fangs? has been predicted to become a very popular online story, and only in the third chapter, it has already gotten many hits. I was inspired to write this story after reading a small excerpt on the roleplaying site, gaia online. I finally decided to actually write it after seeing a very well-done portrait on an art site, deviant art. I then decided to make the relationship partially one-sided. The age difference of 16 to 181 was chosen after watching a popular boylove anime, ?Loveless?. I will now present a preview from ?Bite of Fangs?. ?Opening my eyes slowly, I awaken on a soft bed with silky, white sheets. The white is not even a slightest bit off? It?s more pure then any white I?ve laid my eyes on. It hurts my head. Crismon red petals of roses are scattered over the bed, like they do with a married couple, right after they say those dreaded, permanent vows. I taste my own blood and some type of fabric in my mouth. The gag is as red as the petals, and my blood blends in quite well. I?m so lightheaded from the blood loss that my head is spinning, and I can barley see. Even so, my vision manages to focus on?him. I notice that he doesn?t care about the pain I am in right now. His perfect face now makes me angry, and his twisted little smile makes the anger cloud my mind even more. He sits in an Oak chair, legs crossed, mocking me. His off-white pants are stained with my blood, as well as his perfectly white shirt. His strawberry blonde hair is draped over his shoulder, and now that I think of it, he?s way too perfect to be human. I wish I would have noticed that before. His shirt is opened in the middle, showing off his muscles; the reason why I?m in this predicament in the first place. His eyes are the thing that angers me the most. The beautiful, bright blue eyes I had remembered? now faded into a blood thirsty shade of red.? I thank you for your time, and please give me an opinion of my new story. That is all." Oh shoot... Crimson, not crismon! Sorry! My stories suck, huh? For a sixteen year old, I think it's not half bad. Someone who curses as much as you has to be illiterate a heck anyways. By the way, no gaybashing. Gaybashers go to hell, simple as that. This story is about boylove because that is the most popular thing with teenager girls, if you haven't noticed. Go to deviantart. I don't mind critism, but I don't like just giving me hate comment with no reason behind it. I realize vampires are over-done, but since they are also popular, it's somewhat a plus. (more...)

Resolved Question: Good Martial Arts Books?
My students have been begging me for titles of good martial arts books to read and I am loving it! I love to see kids truly interested in reading so I thought I would create a book club like 1 day after class a month I would bring in dounuts and the instructors and I would discuss the books that we read. I was thinking each instructor would take a book and then the kids could sign up for any book at their age/reading level or above it (asked parents on aproximate reading levels). That way could have some fun and keep everyone challenged.(I will also help people find the right book) All the books I have either read or have been recomended please share any books that you know to be good! 7-9 Everyday Warriors-Ruth Hunter Black Belt- Matt Faulkner Facing The Double-Edged Sword : Art Of Karate For Young People- Terrence Webster-Doyle Fight for Honor (Karate Club, No 1)- Carin Greenberg Baker Julie the Karate Kid -Molly Mia Stewart, Francine Pascal Respect: The Martial Arts Code Of Conduct- Dr. Terence Webster-Doyle 10-11 Angels Don't Know Karate?- Debbie Dadey, Marcia Thornton Jones, Marcia Thornton Jones, Steven Gurney (not sure but sound fun) Legends of the Martial Arts Masters- Susan Lynn Peterson The Next Karate Kid-B. B. Hiller (NEED MORE) 12+ Dojo Wisdom- Jenifer Lawler Time Line of Karate History- Hokama Tetsuhiro Karate Chronicles- The History of Okinawan and Japanese Karate- Harry Cook A Girl's Guide to Martial Arts- A. Jablonsky Karate-Do Kyohan: The Master Text- Gichin Funakoshi, Tsutomu Ohshima Black Belt Karate- Chris Thompson Please I want even more books for the people to choose from- any sugestions would be wonderful! I teach karate but I would be open to any books about other styles as well! and of course the book club would be optional! (more...)
