This truly is a remarkable bread. We first tried this bread with sandwiches and found it stunningly good. Carrie declared the bread, "perfect!" Everyone that tried it, loved it.

What's the secret of this bread? It was designed to be a moist, soft sandwich loaf--though it is very good as a complement to meals. But it's the sun dried tomatoes that makes the bread.

The Cheese Board: Collective Works: Bread, Pastry, Cheese, Pizza
The Cheese Board: Collective Works: Bread, Pastry, Cheese, Pizza When a tiny cheese shop opened for business on a quaint Berkeley street in 1967, there was little hint of what the shop—and the neighborhood—would grow into over the next 30 years. The Cheese Board became a collective a few years later, and Chez Panisse opened across the street, giving birth to one of the country’s most vibrant food neighborhoods, the epicenter of California’s culinary revolution. Known and loved by locals and travelers alike, the Cheese Board is equal parts bakery, cheese store, pizzeria, and gathering place—a patchwork of the local community, where a passion for good food runs deep. For the first time ever, THE CHEESE BOARD presents the classic recipes that have made the store one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s most acclaimed gourmet destinations. Complete with a history of the shop and neighborhood, a cheese primer, and all the classic recipes—including the corn-cherry scones, cheese rolls, and zampanos, all of which have a cult following—THE CHEESE BOARD is as rich and varied as the institution that inspired it.

The Conquest of Bread: 150 Years of Agribusiness in California
The Conquest of Bread: 150 Years of Agribusiness in California A sweeping analysis of California's agrarian history from 1850 to the present.

For over a century, California has been the world's most advanced agricultural zone, an agrarian juggernaut that not only outproduces every state in America, but also most countries. California's success, however, has come at significant costs. Never a family-farm region like the Midwest, California's landscape and Mediterranean climate have been manipulated and exploited to serve modern business interests. Home to gargantuan accomplishments such as the world's largest water storage and transfer network, California also relies on an army of Mexican farm laborers who live and work under dismal conditions.

In The Conquest of Bread, acclaimed historian Richard A. Walker offers a wide-angle overview of the agro-industrial system of production in California from farm to table. He lays bare the long evolution of each link in the food chain, showing how a persistent emphasis on productivity and growth allowed California to outpace agriculture elsewhere in the United States. Full of thunder and surprises, The Conquest of Bread allows the reader to weigh the claims of both boosters and critics in the debate over the most extraordinary agricultural profusion in the modern world.

Voting Question: Help me gain fat ? Atleast little bit.?
Hi all, Thanks so much for answering my question. I live in Southern California :) I'm 6ft and 1 in tall, 26yrs old and male. I weigh only 129 pounds (and losing.) People tell me I should be between 155 to 175 pounds. My ethnicity is ancient Aryan Culture, warrior class. I'm the true Afghani. Tall with muscles and strong bones and fair with brown green eyes and brown hair. My bloodline has been preserved for centuries by marriage rules my culture had until my mom had me. I grew up alone in the US. I'm very athletic, I run, but I'm by far the skinniest all throughout middle school through graduate college. And my coaches don't make it easier for me either. Really, I'm not that hungry, and I can't eat like there is no tomorrow, I've tried. I eat meat, chicken, turkey, lamb, ham, vegetables, wheat bread, cereals, milk, soy, tofu, black beans, fruits, and what not. Is something wrong with me? What the heck? I said I want to GAIN weight. Not lose weight. (more...)

Resolved Question: lack of christmas spirit?
I lived in a small town in California. Every holiday was celebrated with great pomp. People used to decorate their homes one month before, and used to go crazy (in a good way) about Christmas too. People were really nice. It was as if the whole town was a family!! Awesome ginger bread mans, candies, parties, nice/peaceful Christmas carols, and everything.. It was like people really were genuinely happy about the holidays. Now after I moved down south, it feels like people are always complaining and upset. Not too many people decorates their homes in the area (we do though) and no-one seems like they care. I guess I'm whining because I miss the stuff. The thing is that my childhood was like a fairy tale. So is it just me or has anyone else seen the decline in enthusiasm in the past few years? I understand that we are all going through a rough time here but shouldn?t we forget it during the holidays and be happy? Aren?t the holidays about being close to God and your Family? I guess I?m old fashioned.. thanks sahara and B i'm glad i'm not as big of a "loser" as i thought.. Rob your answer isnt too long, I love it!! And to other people I'm Muslim actually, and I'm obviously not offended by any holiday if I'm celebrating it myself!! I dont see how "MERRY CHRISTMAS" can be offensive. Like one person said, it's only people wishing good things.. I love xmas! It's nice, and has lots of meaning for me!! (more...)

Resolved Question: if i leave my boyfriend it will ruin me job wise, any advise?
my boyfriend and i are begining to realize that our relationship is toxic for the both of us and it may just be better for us to break up because he doesnt want to put the effort into our relationship because he expects everything to be easy with no effort on his part. i moved two states away to be with him. if i move back home my only place to go is my brothers house with his family and our mom. right now i have a data entry job that i love. if i leave my job and move home, ill no longer have a car (i drive bf's car to work here) and it would makei t extremely difficult to get a good job. my only option for the time being would be to work at the wonder bread store my sister in law owns and that would be a major stepbackwards for me. i dont have anywhere i can stay here in california either. what should i do? its not like im some moocher and he has some nice car and big house. i pay 90% of the bills and i just use his car to get to work. ado, im not a golddigger, especially when i pay all the bills. we dont live in a big fancy apartment and drive a fancy car, nor do i expect that. if i was really like that, then it would have been more convinient for me to do that in my home state. california is really expensive and i dont make enough even to room with someone else. weve been together for a long time, so it has nothing to do with "knowing" him well enough.
