Voting Question: Are consumer magazines biased against American cars?
I'm not a car enthusiast or a mechanic; but I don't understand why people complain that certain consumer magazines are biased against American cars. I also see Korean cars ranked near the bottom along with a lot of European models. Hondas have the lowest depreciation rate in the U.S. (they hold 44% of their value) and Chrysler has the highest depreciation rate in the U.S. (they hold 25% of their value). I believe the resale value has mostly to do with how well a used car is holding up and a car dealership will price their cars accordingly; it's called the free market. I also read a report from Consumer Reports a few years ago that ranked the Buick Century as the most reliable mid-size sedan. These reports are surveys of people who own the cars and they report how many problems they have had. I also go to the KBB and Edmunds websites and read car reviews so I can make an informed decision on my next purchase. From what I see from those reviews; there is more of a consensus on the reliability of Mazdas, Hondas, and Toyotas than GM makes, Hyundais (including Kia), and Volkswagen. Also, I believe that Ford is in a better position than GM and Chrysler because their cars are overall much more reliable; Chrysler is doing the worst and they make the worst American cars in general. Every make has their good and bad models; but Ford is now ranked near Toyota in reliability. I don't really see with people's actual reviews, rants and raves from people I know, and real resale values that these reports are biased. When reading Consumer Reports' 2008 study on used luxury cars, there were hundreds of comments on AOL that the study was biased. Lincoln was the only American make listed as a reliable luxury car, how many other American luxury cars are there? The only other one I can think of is Cadillac; the others they were complaining about not being listed were near luxury or premium makes. People also confuse initial quality with long-term reliability. Why would consumer magazines rank American cars high in initial quality and turn around and rank them in the middle on reliability? Not all Japanese cars are ranked highly, Nissan and Mitsubishi also have models ranked near the bottom.

Resolved Question: Car shopping...is this a good deal?
I'm looking at a 2009 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited. This is a quote I just received from a dealer. It's roughly $300.00 less than the "TMV" from Edmunds.com....which is calculated before tax and title (a real downer). It's also roughly $500.00 less than a quote from a different dealership. Opinions?

Resolved Question: The right BMW to get?
I found a 07 BMW 335i coupe for almost $40k at a lexus dealership. I went in and took a look at the car it was very clean. I spoke w/the finance manager and got the car down to 36k. Then I went home and talked to the sales manager in a few days and got the car down to 35K. The car is pretty much fully loaded w/ nav, premium, sports package. I checked with edmunds TMV shows the car is valued at $38,000 w/trade in value with all the options. I dont think i can bring it lower than that. I have perfect credit w/the 760 and getting a credit union loan up to $25,000-with a 4.99% theyre not giving me any higher than that. Hes sending me the price of 35k+ 8.25% tax which is $2892+ dealer lic fee+ $344+ reg fee $8 comes out to $38299 out the door. But this morning I check the wbsite and saw they lowered the advertised price down to $37,700. This is the best price I found so far. I also noticed cars like this does not sell alot in this market right now. Can I talk down ever lower or should I take the deal. Does the out door price sound consistent and fair? compared to dealer fees? Please let me know im trying to find how much dealer costs comes out with the out the door price. Thanks in advance

Resolved Question: '05 Infiniti G35 Odo?
I'm about to buy a G35 Coupe 05 model. It only has 13,000 miles, kind of suspicious for a car like this, it's not like it's a ferrari or lamborghini where they would drive only a few thousand a year, this is a normal car. This car is being offered @ a mazda dealership for only $22,000. I read on edmunds article "Confession of a carsalesman" (weird title) but it said that there was a guy he saw they called "Speedometer shorty" who would roll back the meter on cars that were on the lot.
Is there anyway I can check if the odo was rolled back. The carfax is clean but dealerships can do it without informing anyone can't they. Is there any obvious signs of rollbacks on the car?
yea the carfax says no odometer changes, but also the only 2 reports on there is when the original owner bought it @ 46 miles, and when the car was bought by dealership @ 13000 miles. the reader is digital.

Voting Question: How does a lease work with a trade in?
I want to trade in my car that should be worth around 21k (according to edmunds.com) that I owe less than 10k om, but instead of buying the new car I think I want to lease it. I know most leases require little or no money down so what would happen to the 11k difference? Would the dealership require it go towards the new car which would lower the payments or would they give me a check for the difference??
Ok something has to happen, either they payoff my current loan and I get the difference or they put it towards the new car or something. Even if it is 7k or 8k difference that money goes somewhere, my question is where. Thanks

Voting Question: Will replacing the computer chip in my car solve the problem? (05 Altima)?
It's a 2005 Altima with 38,000 miles on it. Took it for it's scheduled tune-up 3 months ago at the Nissan dealership and about a month later i noticed the gas was going a lot quicker than usual. Now i get around 270 miles on one tank of gas (I used to get around 400). Edmunds.com says i should be getting 460 miles a tank. Its a 20 gallon gas tank. Also around the same time the gas gauge started fluctuating back and forth. Ex: When i fill up the tank it would go to the top line and now when i fill it up it goes way past the top line all the way to the "F". The first 10 miles i drive it drops about 2-3 lines. I now get around 170 miles when driving from a fuel tank of gas to the middle line. Then from the middle line to when the car says i need gas i only get 100 miles. How is this possible? The tires are fine and i just did an oil change and put in a new air filter. If the problems were the Oxygen sensor or engine filter- the engine light would come on.
I took it to a mechanic today and he recommended me to get an engine analysis. He also said the computer chip can be sending the wrong message saying it needs more fuel than it actually does.
Would the engine analysis help solve my problem? I personally thought if the check engine light dosen't come on the engine analysis won't show anything. Should i buy a new computer chip? I think this is a question for the professionals.
Please help

Resolved Question: help with lowering price at honda dealership?
ok so i went to the coral springs honda dealership today and checked out the honda fit. Well i saw that the car starts at $13,950 on the honda website and the msrp price at the dealership is around $15,420 plus the manager told me that $1,500 could be added because of taxes and fees. Well then i checked the price on edmunds.com and the msrp is $14,750. How much should i offer to pay without ripping the dealership off?? Should i bring the edmunds.com info with me to the dealership??

Resolved Question: Is it possible to trade in a lemon to a dealership?
I ask this question not b/c I am trying to be sneaky or grimey, but I am curious and this is why. I have a neighbor who is selling his 2000 Ford Focus. My wife spoke with him and he indicated he is leaving and selling a few of his cars. He is a mechanic if that matters. The car has 50,000 miles on it. Clutch and breaks just replaced along with a pump {not sure which one}. This will be my first car {if i purchase it} and I have been doing a lot of searches for used cars. I am only interested in Acura, Honda, Nissan or Toyota because of reliability.
The reviews for the 2000 Focus on Edmunds.com were horrible. From recalls, to untimely repairs, and keys sticking in the ignition it was just crazy. Anyway knowing that he is a mechanic I am still going to have it inspecting by a mechanic of my choice. My question however is if I purchase it and it is just too costly to keep b/c of repairs, and I decide to trade in or sell to a dealership will they accept it with all the issues these cars have? Or will they decline? By the way he is selling for $2,200. KBB is $3-$4.5k i think. Some dealers are selling these for $5.5-$7.5k.
