Open Question: Doesn't this Richardson development underscore the need to get money out of American politics?
Now we have another case of a politician being investigated because of state dealings that he had with a company that contributed to his campaign.
Bear in mind, there might not be anything illegal or inappropriate involved. Yet already, people are presuming that a crime has been committed. Some person just asked the question "How long before Obama denies having met Richardson?"
Doesn't the current political financing system invite at the very least the appearance of impropriety, and in many cases, lead to actual criminal conduct?
Wouldn't we be best served as a nation by mandating publicly-funded elections at virtually all levels of government?
Isn't this the simplest and best way to reduce the undue influence of corporations, lobbyists, and inividuals on the political process?
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28493919/
Some might argue that giving money to politicians is a protected form of speech. The current Supreme Court unfortunately agrees.
yet there are already limits on many forms of speech which are considered harmful to individuals and the public at large. Slander and libel are not protected forms of speech, and as we all no, you aren't allowed to yell "FIRE" in a crowded theatre.
Doesn't the ability to give money to politicians harm the public good? And if campaign contributions are "free speech", why are there already limits on them? Should they not be "limited" right out of existence?
Grr, typos. Oh well.
***
Already, I'm seeing in the answers an "Oh well, whaddyagonnado" attitude, without much in the way of constructive solutions.
This country is in real trouble right now, and much of the reason is the undue influence of money in politics.
John McCain was asked why we didn't have a better energy policy, and he blamed it on "those darned lobbyists".
Rather than restricting their access to the Congressional gymnasium (the ultimate outcome of the Abramoff scandal), doesn't it make sense to remove the ultimate source of their power: money?

Resolved Question: Who Owns Blu-Ray ??????
okay so this is from wikipedia please read it and help me with my q.
The "Blu-ray Disc Founder group" was started in May 2002 by nine leading electronic companies: Sony, Matsushita, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung. Spearheaded by Sony Corporation, on February 19, 2002 the companies announced[2] that they were the "Founders" of the Blu-ray Disc and later changed their name to the "Blu-ray Disc Association" on May 18, 2004 to allow more companies to join their development. Some examples of companies that signed in include Apple, TDK, Dell, Hewlett Packard, The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. and Universal Music Group. As of December 2007, there are more than 250 members and supporters of the Association.

Resolved Question: can anyone help me sum this up to 500 words (or less) please help me ?
PLANNING TO MAKE DISNEY!
Walt Disney planed to make Walt Disney World (WDW) before the 1964 Fair.
Walt decided to find a location in Florida. Land was cheap, the weather was always warm, and more and more people were moving to and vacationing in Florida. However, Walt decided that he didn't want to locate his park along the coast for two reasons: He didn't want to have to deal with hurricanes, and he didn't want people coming to his park in bathing suits.Walt started secretly buying land in FL in conclusion to the fair. The box office success of Mary Poppins provided support to the company coffers right when the land purchases and attraction development began. In fact, a separate company that Walt founded, called Mapo (since the movie's success financed the moonlighting outfit), was the focus of the Florida project for several years. Mapo was eventually merged into the Imagineering department several years later.
His team-which included his brother Roy, General Joe Potter (whom Walt met during the construction of the New York World's Fair), and several other members of the inner circle of Walt Disney Productions-started looking at available parcels of land in Central Florida. ?Project X? was underway.
After considering three possible sites in Florida, a location on the border of Orange and Osceola counties was chosen in 1964. Dummy corporations were set up and Disney agents, led by Robert Foster, secretary and general counsel for Disneyland, began buying land under phony names. Walt had the team work as quickly as possible, for he knew that as soon as word got out about a massive Disney land acquisition, property costs would go up tremendously.
At one meeting, there was a large parcel of land in Orlando available for about $100 per acre. Walt said, ?Buy it!? Roy asked, ?But Walt, we already own 12,000 acres. Do we have the money?? Walt replied, ?Roy, how would you like to own 7,000 acres around Disneyland right now?? to which Roy immediately responded, ?Buy it!?
Foster worked as surreptitiously as possible, flying through other cities so that his travel could not be traced directly back to California. He even made highly visible visits to the World's Fair construction site, only to quietly disappear to Florida the next day.
The three earliest acquisitions would be 12,400 acres owned by a group of Orlando home builders, 1,250 acres owned by an Orlando investment group, and 8,500 acres owned by Florida state senator Irlo Bronson.
The first major problem was acquiring the mineral rights for the 12,400-acre property, which Tufts University still owned after the surface rights were purchased by the Orlando home builders. Mineral rights were important since without it, Disney could not dig underground without permission, and Tufts could tear down any structure to get to the minerals.
After the major properties were locked in, they began concentrating on all of the small outparcels. The acquisitions were tracked on a large map back at WED headquarters in Burbank, which Walt would check daily. By the time they were done, Disney owned over 27,000 acres, which came out to about 43 square miles-about twice the size of Manhattan, the same size as San Francisco, and about 150 times larger than Disneyland.
please help id be very greatfull thank you!! (oh yea if u have any sujestions on punctuation or something like tht or if somethingz a fragment plz help!)

Voting Question: I need help for a biology essay i will pick a best answer?
The Andromeda Strain (1971) was produced in a time when the notion of bio-terrorism was just a frightening idea that people thought of as science fiction. People believed that a virus, like a bomb, could be "controlled" and "contained" by progressive science, technology, and/or the government/military. Recent events in our history have demonstrated that many forms of terrorism are possible and that destructive biological creations, whether made in a laboratory, found in the environment or even in outer space--such as the viral strain portrayed in the film--are not necessarily fictional. Since 1971, many things have changed in society, and many new areas of research and development in college science classes have been created. These classes in biological and chemical research prepare the way for future scientists to create new science and technology, but they could also create new weapons and possibly lead to developing new, perhaps dangerous life forms. Many people are concerned about issues of responsibility and matters of ethics that involve these changes in scientific education. After all, a scientist could create a cure for a dreadful disease but also create that disease as well!
You have been asked to write a letter to your local congressperson in which you will express your views concerning the issue of funding college classes that freely teach and prepare students for research in "advanced bio-technology." The problem involves funding these classes, since they are very expensive for local colleges to maintain and require extensive research and advanced computer facilities. The principle funding sources for these classes and the use of laboratory equipment and advanced technologies would be from major corporations that develop and sponsor military weaponry and technology. Should industry be involved in what students learn and how they are funded? Who will "own" any discoveries or research that students' develop? Should this research be used as a form of weaponry? Who controls this situation? Should this be solely the college's decision, the public's decision, or something else?
i will pick a best answer
thank you so much
this essay is ver opininated but requires a lot of research
but i would like to see some different point of views so i have a better idea of what to write
i need help basically coming up with an opinion

Resolved Question: what is your reaction to the comment made by steven murawski, chief scientist at the U.S national marine ?
fisheries service on boris worm's headlining prediction as "far too pessimistic"?
article-Fishermen on the high seas have plenty of worries, not the least of which are boat-tossing storms, territorial squabbles and even pirates. Now Boris Worm, a marine biologist at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, has added another. After studying, among other things, global catch data over more than 50 years, he and a team of 13 researchers in four countries have come to a stunning conclusion. By the middle of this century, fishermen will have almost nothing left to catch. "None of us regular working folk are going to be able to afford seafood," says Stephen Palumbi, a Stanford University marine biologist and co-author of the study published in Science. "It's going to be too rare and too expensive."
Don't tell that to your local sushi chef. Over the past three decades, the fish export trade has grown fourfold, to 30 million tons, and its value has increased ninefold, to $71 billion. The dietary attractiveness of seafood has stoked demand. About 90% of the ocean's big predators--like cod and tuna--have been fished out of existence. Increasingly, fish and shrimp farms are filling the shortfall. Though touted as a solution to overfishing, many of them have--along with rampant coastal development, climate change and pollution--devastated the reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds where many commercially valuable fish hatch.
Steven Murawski, chief scientist at the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service, finds Worm's headlining prediction far too pessimistic. Industry experts are even more skeptical. "There's now a global effort to reduce or eliminate fishing practices that aren't sustainable," says industry analyst Howard Johnson. "With that increased awareness, these projections just aren't realistic."
Perhaps. Still, the destructive fishing practices that have decimated tuna and cod have not declined worldwide, as Johnson suggests. Up to half the marine life caught by fishers is discarded, often dead, as bycatch, and vibrant coral forests are still being stripped bare by dragnets. Worm argues that fisheries based on ecosystems stripped of their biological diversity are especially prone to collapse. At least 29% of fished species have already collapsed, according to the study, and the trend is accelerating.
So what's a fish eater to do? "Vote with your wallet," says Michael Sutton, who runs the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program in California. Since 1999, the aquarium has handed out pocket guides listing sustainably harvested seafood. The Marine Stewardship Council has partnered with corporations to similarly certify wild and farm-raised seafood. Some 370 products in more than two dozen countries bear the British group's "Fish Forever" label of approval. Wal-Mart and Red Lobster, among others, have made commitments to sell sustainably harvested seafood.
But that's just a spit in the ocean unless consumers in Japan, India, China and Europe join the chorus for change. "If everyone in the U.S. started eating sustainable seafood," says Worldwatch Institute senior researcher Brian Halweil, "it would be wonderful, but it wouldn't address the global issues. We're at the very beginning of this."

Madam,
I regret to inform you that, MIDC Officer?s are hand in Glove with the Garbage Contractor.
I am informing you that the Garbage contractors are in syndicate with other Contractors. Last contract was awarded to Bidder who was on third position. With the help of MIDC Officers causing about Rs. 4,00,00,000/- loss to Govt. Exchequer. Bidder No.1 has offered of Rs. 11,24,00,000/-, Bidder No.3 offer was Rs. 7,86,92,000/- as all this is done in connivance of MIDC Officers. Neither the contractor has permission or Licences to handle hazardous waste for recycling, transporting as required by MPCB & CPCB, pollution boards. Last year in reply to my query of R.T.I., P.I.O. of MIDC, Thane has said that it is the contractor?s who is handling the hazardous we are not concerned to it, I am surprised as all the requisites, permissions are to be taken by the contractor as mentioned in the tender document and terms condition.
At present also the contractor doesn?t have any sort of permission to handle transport or recycle hazardous sludge containing various metals as such precisions metal, Gold, Silver, Copper, Zinc, Lead, etc. which requires the permission of MPCB and CPCB as per the rules framed for handling hazardous waste. At present the contractor M/s. Goodluck Trading Corporation, LBS Marg, Kurla (W), Mumbai, have submitted consent to operate which is meant for non-hazardous and not for hazardous chemicals sludge, etc.
The said consent to operate submitted by the contractor and address mentioned of the plant there is?nt any sort of plant or unit as mentioned.
I have already written to your good self in this regard which is acknowledged by your office, hence I am forwarding you the R.T.I. replies received in this regard for your perusal and necessary action as all this hazardous waste is taken out and dump in open space which is causing heavy toxic pollution in the environment.
You are therefore requested you to take necessary steps to stop all these.
With regards.

Resolved Question: What grade would you give this college paper (10 pages)?
Terrorism, the use of covert violence by a group to bring about political or social change, is usually directed against a government but can also used against other ethnic groups, classes, or parties. Historically, terrorism has been used as a means to attempt many different ends. Civil wars, revolutionary wars, labour disputes, and resistance movements have all been accompanied by terrorism. The attempts of terrorists have been to overthrow both liberal democracies and oppressive tyrants, sometimes with an obvious link to economic or social crisis.
In today?s increasingly complex, technological, and globalized world terrorists have changed their methods with the times. They are adopting new targets, weapons, tactics, demands, and methods of organization. The old profiles of terrorists no longer seem to hold true as more and more terrorists are coming from many different economic and social backgrounds. It is a global phenomenon and yet each terrorist organization appears to have its own unique motivations. Although the reasons for their actions may be different, the methods, tactics and even networks used by terrorists are often shared and indicate a common factor.
Acts of terror may seem, and are often designed to seem, like senseless violence against a random target. To the average, uninvolved person such abominable actions indicate an insanity without logic. Certain individuals that are susceptible to joining terrorist organizations may be somehow psychologically predisposed, or they may see a moral justification of means by the ends they hope to achieve. Whatever the reasons they have, there is rationality and strategy behind the attacks they carry out. The terrorists make calculated plans of attack based on their own analysis of a cost and benefit scenario. They focus the extent of their resources to attack wherever the target is most vulnerable; they only need one successful attempt against a target that must be defensive on all fronts at all times.
Based of the reactionary nature of terrorism and the evidence that terrorists use logical reasoning there must be some causal factors that lend themselves to the strategies of terrorists. By examining pre-existing conditions within a country or region it is possible to draw conclusions about the tactics that terrorists will use. The factors considered for terrorism are similar to vulnerabilities of a disaster: resources, social demographics, and political institutions as well as historical background. These pre-existing conditions can be used to account for the targets terrorists chose, the actual method of attack, and the intended consequences.
Nigeria, with its environmentally diverse delta region, is a country that is representative of most post-colonial African nations in the challenges it has faced since its independence. As with many other countries all over Africa it saw violent conflict and struggles with development in the wake of its colonizers. Now Nigeria sees itself as a model for successful democracy in its region. After forty years of government characterized by rapid regime change and military dictatorships, they are now in the second decade of a functional democracy. Nigeria is the most populous nation in Africa and is home to over 250 ethnic groups, with Muslims, Christians, and people of indigenous beliefs. Additionally, like some other West African countries it is very rich in natural resources, with oil being its most profitable material. It is one of the strongest economies in Africa. As a result they have received lots of attention from multi-national corporations that have put pressure on the government to keep wages and benefits for Nigerian workers low. Urban areas in Nigeria only account for 25% of the country?s population; the majority of Nigerians are rural dwellers and rely on subsistence agriculture. There is also a prevalence of government corruption and prebendalism in which federal jobs are given primarily to family members and people from the same ethnic heritage.
Terrorism in Nigeria has appeared in many different forms, and it was even said by the U.S. State Department that Nigeria is an area prone to terrorist activity. Attacks on foreign companies in the Niger Delta have been growing in frequency and organization; recently a terrorist group known as MEND (Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta) has declared war on the foreign investors in the region. There has also been separate instances of religiously motivated terrorism in Kano, Nigeria?s capital city. There have also been instances of state sponsored terrorism stemming out of recent elections and the sudden adoption of Sharia in most of the Northern States. The many conditions and forces acting within Nigeria have led to calculated acts of terrorism, by examining the pre-existing conditions inside the country a clear connection can be made between the conditions and the methods of terrorism.
The first pre-existing condition re
Not all terrorists use the same methods. Unless you are trying to tell me suicide bombing, hijackings, hostage taking, arson, assassination, etc. are all the same. There is no universally accepted definition of terrorism, by labeling it as a tactic you are widening the scope used to view terrorism from a moralistic and philosophical standpoint because that definition implies terrorists are soldiers.
P.S. this is sandy isn't it?
