A History of Violence (New Line Platinum Series)
On the surface, David Cronenberg may seem an unlikely candidate to direct
A History of Violence, but dig deeper and you'll see that he's the right man for the job. As an intellectual seeker of meaning and an avowed believer in Darwinian survival of the fittest, Cronenberg knows that the story of mild-mannered small-town diner proprietor Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) is in fact a multilayered examination of inbred human behavior, beginning when Tom's skillful killing of two would-be robbers draws unwanted attention to his idyllic family life in rural Indiana. He's got a loving wife (Maria Bello) and young daughter (Heidi Hayes) who are about to learn things about Tom they hadn't suspected, and a teenage son (Ashton Holmes) who has inherited his father's most prominent survival trait, manifesting itself in ways he never expected. By the time Tom has come into contact with a scarred villain (Ed Harris) and connections that lead him to a half-crazy kingpin (William Hurt, in a spectacular cameo), Cronenberg has plumbed the dark depths of human nature so skillfully that
A History of Violence stands well above the graphic novel that inspired it (indeed, Cronenberg was unaware of the source material behind Josh Olson's chilling adaptation). With hard-hitting violence that's as sudden as it is graphically authentic, this is
A History of Violence that's worthy of serious study and widespread acclaim.
--Jeff Shannon On the DVD
On a single disc and with little fanfare, this DVD makes an excellent case for the best extras of the year. Dive into the one-hour-long documentary and learn more about moviemaking than on many a double-disc. The secret lies in director David Cronenberg's (and his usual crew) folksy casualness in showing off the craft, be it makeup (green screens were used), directing (Cronenberg doesn't storyboard), or art direction (the diner set). It also is very funny to hear about "fish Fridays" and how Maria Bello's Uncle Pete became an influence. Even the infamous sex-on-the-staircase scene is diagnosed with candor as stars Viggo Mortensen and Bello act as if there is no backstage camera. There's only one deleted scene, but it's uncommonly deconstructed on why it was filmed and why it was cut (it's a very Cronenbergian dream sequence). A short bit on Cannes is also a delight. So much is here that Cronenberg's smart commentary track is nearly superfluous. Isn't that a nice surprise? --Doug Thomas

Six in Paris

In 1965 six French New Wave directors took a Paris neighborhood and concocted a short sketch around it. The results sometimes favor character and story, and sometimes local flavor, but almost all are engaging in their own right. Jean Douchet and Jean-Luc Godard (repsectively) offer gloriously French slices of romantic comedy in the sexually open 1960s with "Saint Germain des Prés" and "Montparnasse et Levallois." Jean Rouch's "Gare du Nord" is slight of substance but beautifully explores the neighborhood in a gorgeous tracking shot. Jean-Daniel Pollet's "Rue Saint-Denis" offers two delicious characters in a witty comedy of a mousy dishwasher who brings a brassy streetwalker to his dumpy apartment. Eric Rohmer's "Place de l'Étoile," a sometimes silly but deftly managed little comedy of a man who strikes a panhandler and is terrified he killed him, displays a giddy goofiness unseen in his later work. Claude Chabrol's shiver-inducing slice of urban life "La Muette" ventures outside the oppressive hallways and tiny rooms only once, at the end, as if to celebrate the escape of the rebellious boy from his bickering parents. The strongest of a solid collection, Chabrol's chilly view of dead-end relationships in a splintered upper class family concludes the otherwise lighthearted collection on a devastating, dark note. Released in France under the more evocative title
Paris Vu Par... (Paris Seen By), this is one of the strongest and most entertaining anthology films to emerge from the 1960s.

Resolved Question: What's your most embarrassing moment?
Mine: I was 16 years old waiting tables in a small diner. I brought a tray of drinks to a table of 8 cops. When I went to hand the first drink to one of them I bumped another drink on the tray and spilled 7 drinks into one of the cops' lap. He had to go home and change (obviously). They were regular customers too, they never let me live that down as long as I worked there. Good news - I waited tables for 4 more years - never spilled anything else on a customer!

Resolved Question: Do you think this sounds good for a story?
I got really bored the other day and decide to write a story. This is just some kind of plot I came up with. Don't ask me how.
It?s about a girl named Alicia who?s runs away from home (she use to live in southern Ohio, but runaways to upstate Maine), and gets a job in a diner. There she meets these people, who live a strange life, and who are always following her around. Later, she finds out they are vampires. And they tell her that she is a vampire and that she has a destiny she needs to fulfill. Then every thing makes sense to her finally. At first, she takes the news very hard and runs away to Alaska. The other vampires follow her, and teach everything she knows to know about being a vampire. Then they take her to Russia, where these old adult vampires, have been living wrong, and have been breaking a Vampire Doctrine. (which are these really old rules, written by the first Vampires in the world). Alicia is the only one who can stop them. What does she do when she hears all of this shocking news?
So, do you think it sounds good?
I know, I posted something like this earlier.
But, I just wanted to get more peoples ideas on it.

Because, she is living in Maine at the time. And Alaska was closer I guess.
Also, th diner is where she first mets them in the small town.

Resolved Question: Could the GOP lose Virginia?
"It?s puzzling because McCain?s campaign is based in Arlington, Va., and the senator lives there when he?s at his headquarters or across the river in his Senate office. Yet whenever he?s back in the area he never ventures beyond the office and condo-filled Crystal City neighborhood to more politically competitive communities nearby where he could get extensive local media coverage by just dropping by a diner."

The Struggling Actress
Characters:
Emily Lorick ? A 19-year-old girl from London living in LA. She works two jobs: at a diner and at a hotel. She wants to make it big in Hollywood, and not just stick to uncredited extra roles in TV shows and movies.
Brad Lowe ? Emily?s boyfriend (who is also 19) whom she met at the diner. He is very supportive of her dreams to be a star. He is a tour guide, showing tourists celebrity homes.
Alex Taylor ? Emily?s best friend who is also very much into acting and making it big in Hollywood. She is 20 years old.
Charlotte Smith ? Emily?s agent that finds auditions for her to go to. She?s very friendly and finds as many opportunities for Emily as she can.
Act 1
Emily just came home from work at the diner. She lives in a small apartment in Santa Monica. It is tidy and very cheerful looking. It?s decorated with pictures of her and her boyfriend, friends, and artwork.
Emily: Hello, George!
[Picks up cat and hears a knock at the door. She opens it.]
Emily: Brad!
[Hugs Brad]
Brad: Hey, Emily. So what?s up with you?
Emily: I?m going to try out for a role in the show ?90210? tomorrow! Charlotte found an audition time for me.
Brad: I?m sure you?ll do great!
Emily: Aw, thanks. Anyways, I rented a movie. How about we watch it?
Brad: Okay.
Act 2
Emily is at the audition place with Charlotte. It?s in a big office building downtown. There are thousands of other girls hoping for the same part that Emily wants.
[Emily sees Alex]
Emily: Alex! What are you doing here?
Alex: Emily! At the last minute I decided to try out for this role, too. Isn?t this exciting?!
Emily: Yeah, it is.
[Looks a bit unsure]
Alex: Em, I can see it in your face that this is a bit of a surprise. I know the chances are very slim if one of us gets the role, but if one of us does?then we are not going to let a role get in the way of our friendship, are we?
Emily: Nope. It will be ok!
Alex: Looks like you?re next?break a leg!
Emily: Thanks, Al. You too!
Act 3
Scene 1
Emily is back in her apartment, waiting for a phone call to give her the news about whether she got the part or not.
[The phone rings and Emily picks it up.]
Charlotte: Hi, Emily. I just received word about your audition.
Emily: How did I do?
Charlotte: I?m sorry, but you didn?t get it. I heard it was a very close tie though between you and another girl.
Emily: Really? No way!!
Charlotte: Yeah, I?m pretty sure her name is Alex.
Emily: Alex who?? Alex Taylor?
Charlotte: Yeah! That was her last name.
[Looking very forlorn]
Emily: Okay?thanks Charlotte.
[Hangs up phone]
Emily: I should feel happy for Alex?yet I can?t shake this jealous feeling?
Scene 2
Emily is at Alex?s apartment, just hanging out with Alex. Alex?s apartment is very messy and disorganized. There are also many unpacked boxes around because she just moved in a few weeks ago. They are sitting on the couch.
Emily: Congrats, Alex!
Alex: Thanks, Em! I know I did amazing. The judges said I was the best one I saw all day. I know you did pretty well, too!
Emily: Yeah, I was so ner-
Alex: Oh! You?ll also never guess what they said about me! They said I could be Angelina Jolie?s twin! I never realized I was that attractive!
Emily: Well you are very pret-
Alex: Em, so are you! But me? Angelina Jolie? Wow!! Maybe I?ll get a famous boyfriend and everything.
Emily: Alex, I think I?m going to go now. It?s been a long day at work.
Alex: It was great seeing you!
Scene 3
Emily is at her apartment, sitting on one of the kitchen chairs.
[Emily calls Alex from her cell phone]
Emily: Hey, Alex! Do you want to go out to eat with me tonight?
Alex: Can?t. I?m going to be filming all day, and then I?m going out to eat with Posh and Becks!
Emily: Posh Spice and David Beckham?!?
Alex: I know! I?m so lucky. I hope you have fun tonight and not be too bored. I?m sure you could scrape together some money you got from working at the diner and go see a movie! Hopefully, you?ll see me on the big screen soon as well! Love ya, bye.
[Alex hangs up. Emily is furious.]
Scene 4
Emily and Brad are eating out. It is a moderately priced place, and the restaurant has a very modern, funky look to it.
Emily: So yesterday, I was talking to Alex and she was being the most conceited girl ever!
Brad: Em, she just let fame get to her.
Emily: She thinks she?s such hot stuff now and the world should kiss up to her now. She?s treating me like some pitiful little peasant, telling me that I?m sure I could ?scrape together some money and see a movie.? How tacky!
Brad: She may come around or she may not. If she doesn?t, she wasn?t a true friend to begin with. Just remember that.
[There is a long, thoughtful pause from Emily.]
Brad: So what are you doing tomorrow?
Emily: I think I may audition f

Resolved Question: "pancakes for puppies" question?
Ok, so I live in Lancaster County, Pa...home of the puppy mills. In local news, 80 puppies were recently shot because they were of no use to their puppy mill breeder. Some folks were upset by this for some reason. Any ways, one local pancake diner around here sponsored a pancake breakfast to raise money to try and pass a bill against this sort of thing. I decided I wanted pancakes this particular morning and decided to grab my purse where I keep my teacup pitbuldoodle puppy named Minnie, and go get some breakfast. Believe it or not, these folks refused to let my teacup pup in the building. Has anyone else who owns a designer breed such as my teacup pitbudoodle been denied access to a diner? This is unbelievable, especially since these folks are claiming to care about dogs so dang much. Besides, my teacup bitbudoodle simply loves to eat pancakes and I thought a lil treat would be good for her. What do you think of this?
Minnie was wearing a cute, pink Nike sweatsuit, btw.

Resolved Question: What is this article saying? what's the main point?, ?
McCain, Obama scramble to shift economic message
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - With economic anxiety rising, Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama scrambled Wednesday to adjust their messages to connect more directly with financially struggling voters.
Obama talks directly into the camera in a new, two-minute television ad on how he'll fix an economy in which "paychecks are flat and home values are falling." McCain and running mate Sarah Palin softened opposition to government bailouts, accepting the U.S. takeover of the nation's largest insurer as unfortunate but necessary to protect ordinary Americans.
"The shot that has been called by the Feds ? it's understandable but very, very disappointing that taxpayers are called upon for another one," Palin told reporters during a visit to delicatessen in Cleveland.
Both McCain and Obama advocated cracking down on freewheeling Wall Street practices and for tough new regulations on financial institutions.
Obama ridiculed McCain's calls for more regulation as an eleventh-hour conversion for one who has long championed deregulation.
Too many in Washington and on Wall Street "weren't minding the store. They sat on their hands until it was too late," Obama told a rally in Elko, Nev. He challenged McCain's vow to take on the "old boy's network...He hasn't taken them on for the last 26 years."
The increased emphasis on the faltering economy came on a day when stocks resumed their downward plunge following Tuesday night's government takeover of American International Group Inc. with an $85 billion two-year loan from the Federal Reserve in return for a majority stake in the company.
"The focus of any such action should be to protect the millions of Americans who hold insurance policies, retirement plans and other accounts with AIG," McCain said in a statement. "We must not bail out the management and speculators who created this mess."
The turnabout came a day after McCain strongly opposed additional government relief and praised the government's decision not to rescue Lehman Brothers after it had intervened to help investment bank Bear Stearns and mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
His Democratic rival addressed the AIG takeover in Elko, saying the government acted "to prevent an even larger crisis." Arguing that the U.S. housing market was "in a shambles," Obama said it was important now for the Federal Reserve to ensure that families with AIG insurance are protected. "It must not bail out the shareholders or the management of AIG that were making big profits when times were good."
Obama, in his own change of tactics, speaks directly to voters in a new commercial to air Wednesday on national cable and in some battleground states.
"In the past few weeks, Wall Street's been rocked as banks closed and markets tumbled. But for many of you ? the people I've met in town halls, backyards and diners across America ? our troubled economy isn't news," Obama says in the ad, taped Tuesday in a living room-like setting.
"Paychecks are flat and home values are falling. It's hard to pay for gas and groceries and if you put it on a credit card, they've probably raised your rates," he adds.
Obama also laments rising health insurance costs. He details major elements of his economic plan, including its proposal for a $1,000 tax cut for working couples, steps to reduce reliance on imported oil, bringing a "responsible end" to the war in Iraq and ending an "anything goes culture on Wall Street."
"Doing these things won't be easy. But we're Americans," Obama says.
Obama also discussed the AIG takeover
McCain campaigned in Michigan, one of the states hardest hit by eight straight months of rising unemployment.
At the General Motors Orion assembly plant, he told workers: "We are going to fight the special interests and corruption in Washington. We are going to fight the greed and irresponsibility on Wall Street."
While both presidential candidates have called for tougher regulation of financial institutions and cracking down on Wall Street abuses, neither has come up with a detailed plan, nor gone so far as to endorse a proposal for the kind of massive federal intervention that took place in the savings and loan crisis of the late 1980s and the early 1990s.
Then, the Resolution Trust Corp. was established by Congress to acquire the real estate, mortgages and other assets of thousands of failed S&Ls.
Some lawmakers suggest such a strategy may be needed to stabilize financial markets, rather than the ad hoc interventions the government has been doing.
A day after extending a helping hand to AIG, the White House on Monday called the U.S. economy a mixed picture that would ultimately weather the current turmoil. Press secretary Dana Perino said help for other endangered companies would be considered on a "case-by-case basis."
Both candidates have been adjusting to keep pace with a fast-changing situation in which financial markets have been buffeted by one j
