Dead Bang
Dead Bang The race murders committed by a group of neo-Nazis in Dead-Bang are based on fact, but the down-on-his-luck, L.A. homicide detective (Don Johnson in a role inspired by a real-life cop) investigating them is the real show here. His personal life in such turmoil that he vomits on a witness, his finances so bad that he has to tape his broken glasses, Johnson's gumshoe is a study in dedicated grimness. There's adequate suspense and drama surrounding the killer fascists, but this 1989 film by John Frankenheimer (The Manchurian Candidate) is more noteworthy for a few examples of the director's stylish flair for hard action than social commentary. --Tom Keogh

Black Book
Black Book As in Basic Instinct, a lovely lady takes the lead in Black Book, but this time Paul Verhoeven has more than cheap thrills in mind. Towards the end of WWII, Rachel Stein (the vibrant Carice von Houten), a Jewish singer, is living with a gentile family in the countryside. When Allied forces bomb the area, she's forced to flee. On her perilous journey to The Hague (Verhoeven's hometown), brunette Rachel joins the Resistance and changes her identity to blonde Ellis de Vries. Her next order of business: infiltrate Gestapo headquarters. Like many Verhoeven heroines, Rachel aces her assignment--and then some. First, she seduces the handsome Captain Müntze (Sebastian Koch, The Lives of Others), then she falls in love with him. Müntze, who returns her affection, isn't what he appears to be, but their relationship puts both at great risk. At this point, the filmmaker expertly kicks the proceedings into high gear, before concluding on a bittersweet note. Naturally, since this is a Verhoeven picture, there's plenty of wry humor and uninhibited sexuality along the way. Starting with 1985's Flesh + Blood, the Dutch director released an American movie every two to three years. After the poorly received Hollow Man, however, Verhoeven took a six-year break. Black Book, a return to his native Holland, was worth the wait. (He began work on the screenplay in the 1980s.) It works triple-time as a thriller, a tribute to Holland's Jewish population, and a poison pen letter to the Dutch opportunists who would attempt to sell them out. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Open Question: Why are views on here so not in par with that of the rest of the world?
Taking the Israeli assault on Palestine, majority here seem to support Israel and justify killing more than 90% innocent people, like bombing a school of 350 refugees because of alledged gunfire coming out of it 'from somebody'. Is this really the view of the world? I have reviewed a lot of international news sources, mostly europeans, british.. european union, dutch government (anne-frank house is in amsterdam.. europeans suffered neo-nazis, if anyone knows about the horror of holocaust, it's europeans).. yet they all condemn israel's brutality, it is called a war crime by several european politicians.. Why is it SO different from US media? Why does Israel not allow international observers and reporters? Despite that, we are seeing one child after another dragged into hospitals, and norwegian surgeon providing assistance, calling Israel mad.. for claiming so many terrorists are hiding among civilians.. out of 350, 2 combattants with 'rifles'.. would Israel also accept bombing an Israeli school with Israeli women and children, because 1 or 2 'suspected' combattants are hiding in their schools? Would Israelians be able to accept that scale of collateral damage if it was on their own side? Do you trust your media? If so, how do you explain the rest of the world, Europe in particular, criticizing Israel? Where as US media does opposite. What are their interests? If you don't trust your media, what do you do about it? Doesn't it make you angry you are being manipulated? And (more...)

Resolved Question: ramadan: Serious answers only and no insults, I'm allowed my opinion...?
I know this was a few years ago but it has been bothering me. When the cartoons of mohammed were released in a dutch newspaper (whatever they were in) there was loads of protests etc. Ok I can see so many Muslims found it offensive and they have a right to say how offended they are. But why then did in revenge a dutch islamist print a cartoon of Anne Frank in bed with Hitler!!! Why did that person print such an awful thing in retaliation? Isn't that double standards? Why couldn't whoever printed that just forget and forgive. I'm not saying Muslims agree with what they printed, I just don't understand why that person did it. Pakistani chaps wife- Get over it! I'm allowed my opinion! muslimviolet- because she is not a prophet it's ok? I think that cartoon of Anne Frank was far worse than the one of mohammed! I don't believe mohammed is a prophet lol report me because I said mohammed isn't a prophet!! (more...)

Resolved Question: Do you still have grandparents who are war veterans and will you do something on Rememberance day.?
Here in Canada on Tuesday, November 11th, Remeberance day of WWII all the buses will be stopping for 2 minutes at the side of the road.. years ago all the cars in Britain came to a standstill for 2 minutes on that day.. This Sunday is Rememberance Sunday. do you or did you have grandparents who told you stories or who were war veterans in WWII? I remember that approx. 11 years ago my husband and I went to Brugge.. Bruges.. in French and to the War museum of WWI there. In Paschendale of course that was all about war veterans who faught in WWI.. a lot of Canadians, New Zealanders, and Australians are buried there.. we went to one war cemetery and when I saw all the white crosses I was overcome and I thought as I was 35 then.. in theory.. some of the young men who had given their life for freedom of the next generation could have been my sons.. the youngest on that particular war cemetery was only 15 who had died and the eldest soldier who died was 63 years old.. lots of them were 17 or 18...we have a big war museum in Ottawa, where I live that reminds us of WWI and WWII.. I find the Holocaust and the genocide against jews the most atrocious crime in the history of the last century. the concentration camps and also was very touched to read ''Anne Frank's diary.. which is a ''must read '' for anyone really as she was only 15 when she and her sister Margot.. died in Bergen-Belsen but she had left a diary she had kept during her secret hiding in Amsterdam in the secret annex for 2 years and they were discovered in 1944 and the mother and other people of the secret annex all died being gassed.. Margot Frank and Anne Frank died in March of 1945 just before the Americans came to liberate the camp.. they died of disease and undernourishment.. the father was the sole survivor. Otto Frank.. he found the diary and had it published into hundreds of languages.. it is still much in demand now .. it hold all the hopes, fears and dreams and even first love of a kid aged 13 to 15.. it's well written.. originally written in Dutch but translated in all important languages. world wide.. I was born in Germany but I abhorr war crimes and so do my parents.. my dad is 81 but he was the only surviving son of my grandma.. she lost her elder son after just having been 2 weeks in Stalingrad.. then a telegram came that he died.. but his body was never found.. he never wanted to go.. my grandma was born in 1895. she came from a large family. two of her elder brothers faught in WWI and were both killed.. she had one younger brother remaining who was too young in WWI and 2 sisters. whom I all still got to know. I never asked her many stories as she died when I was 15.. but I wish I had.. instead I asked her what it was like to be born in the 19th century and she told me stories about that. The first World war was hell but the Holocaust is something I could never forgive...that was craziness or sheer evil I am not sure.. to do this to human beings.. Hitler wanted to take over the world and wanted a purely Arian race.. everyone else was inferior in his eyes.. I wonder if I would have had a chance in Hitler times to have stayed alive as I am not at all Germanic looking.. I look more Ukrainian or Serbian.. than my husband who was British but died in 1977 before I had a chance to meet him... he was P.O.W in WWII in Germany .. born in Serbo Croatia and after the war the Germans didn't allow him to go back there and he had a choice between America or the UK and he chose the Uk where he met his wife.. my M.I.L. who remarried in 1979, two years after his death due to throat cancer.. and is now married to a British man.. My husband and I have no children.. My husbands brother never married.. so the name Petrovic has come to the end of the line in this family same as my family name Friedrich.. as I am the last and am 46 so way too late to have children.. We wanted a family very much but it wasn't meant to be.. Hormone problems on my part..so instead we moved a lot. to the Netherlands, and Canada and travelled a lot in Europe before coming to settle in Canada...Do you remember stories your grandparents told you and will you wear a poppy..Each poppy.. each real poppy on Rememberance day represents the life of one soldier who died in WWII...I like the poem by John McCrae.. In Flanders Fields the poppies grow'' (more...)

If you believe Barney Frank is more of a Barney and less of a Frank, then you might be a redneck. ? If you don?t like your baby?s first grade class being bussed in to attend their lesbian teacher?s wedding, then you might be a redneck. ? If you think your lazy-eyed, evil half sister Erlene, the one with Tourette?s, is more fair and balanced than the mainstream media even on Saturday nights when she is all liquored up, then you might be a redneck. ? If you think the Fairness Doctrine is the beginning of the end of free speech, then you might be a redneck. ? If you think terrorists should be bombed into oblivion versus chatted with over tea and a smoldering hookah, then you might be a redneck. ? If you equate ?progressives? with the two Dutch weirdoes who bought the farm next door to yours and blast Boy George music from their house, have bizarre barn dances on the weekends and keep stealing your young female sheep, then you might be a redneck. ? If you don?t like it when two-year-olds, corpses, house pets, Disney Characters and child molesters get to vote (and vote often), then you might be a redneck. ? If you get teary eyed when you hear the Star Spangled Banner and proud when you see our soldiers, then you might be a redneck. ? If you mutter curse words under your breath when you see a hippie wearing a Che Guevara T-Shirt, then you might be a redneck. If the above makes me a redneck, then man am I glad not to be equated with the walking sea cow that is John Murtha and his icky ilk. I hope and pray to the Redneck God in heaven that all the bitter and clingy God, gun and USA loving voters will remember when they go to the polls this November 4th (before the liberals vote on November 5th) how zealously, consistently and mercilessly the lunatic left disparages them at every turn and will, therefore, cast their ?redneck? ballot for the McCain and Palin ticket.
