Though Stepmom was dismissed as a contender in the 1998 Oscar race, it's worth giving a second chance to this rather cogent, sharp-tongued look at second chances. Susan Sarandon's performance as a mom about to be replaced by her ex-husband's new girlfriend (played by Julia Roberts) has a lot of bite, and it's a shame the script opted to marginalize and trivialize her plight in its final reel. Initially, the rancor that passes between divorced mom Jackie (Sarandon) and trendy fashion photographer Isabel (Roberts) rings true, aided by the sincerity of Jackie's ex-husband Luke (Ed Harris) and the emotional plight of their children, who have the most to lose in their parents' divorce. As the drama makes clear, the kids are the real victims in the agony that ensues between old and new love.

Director Chris Columbus, who is adept at showing familial chaos (he directed Mrs. Doubtfire and Home Alone) with a sanitized minimum of lingering emotional damage, actually manages to dig a trifle deeper than usual in exploring the jealousy and hurt that occur when the baton is passed between a birth mom and the younger wife who steps into her shoes. Stepmom fortunately manages to touch on that chord--showing how an ambitious woman might feel hampered by the responsibility of children just because she's fallen in love with their dad--as well as the haunting grief that it causes their birth mom. It's an issue that haunts millions of second wives everywhere, and while Roberts conveys the confusion of being taken for granted in the melee that follows, it's Sarandon who walks off with the film. She's relentless in her fury, and everyone else in the film--the generally excellent Harris included--is sideswiped. It's just a shame that Hollywood once again wimps out in the end, solving the problem by giving Sarandon a terminal illness. Instead of allowing Jackie and Isabel's relationship to unfold on something less than a high note, the movie has to quell its best thing with a false payoff because it doesn't know what to do with real life. --Paula Nechak

I am not doing anything wrong. I am just walking behind 2 girls who are talking among themselves and I happen to walk fast and they are walking so slow as a turtle and I am thinking to myself: ?Jesus cryst!! Hurry up slow pokes!!!? Otherwise, they would think I am trying to follow them and act creepy. So of course, I am trying to go around them but I cant because the sidewalk is small and there are poles and parking meters in the way on the other side and the one side has buildings so I couldn?t walk around them so I just follow the same pace they are in so I have my mp3 player and just mind my own business not bothering them but then one girl turns around and gives me a creepy look and I don?t know what to say then she says among to the other girl with pointing at me: ?THIS GUY IS CREEPING ME OUT! HE KEEPS FOLLOWING US! LETS GO AROUND THE SIDEWALK!? So I said in a assertive way but was kind of kidding: ?I heard that. And just for the record, I am not following you.? And they both gave me a weird look like they were scared and walked away and I said to myself: ?F*ck those paranoid b*tches!!? So 20 minutes later, I go to Giant Eagle because I had to get some stuff and I was behind those girls again and I thought: ?oh no!! They are going in Giant Eagle too!!! Jez what a coincidence!? So I try to avoid them and do my thing with getting a basket and going grocery shopping and they looked at me again but only this time this one girl said: ?WHAT DO YOU WANT?! CANT YOU STOP FOLLOWING US?!? And I said in a honest way: ?Look it just so happens we are going in the same place. Believe me, Im just shopping and getting some stuff.? Then I said to myself: ?Jez If you don?t like it, tough s*it!? and it was a trainwreck because we all think alike and I was trying to avoid them and even go ahead of them and in a different line but HOW CAN YOU NOT FOLLOW SOMEONE IF YOU ARE GOING TO THE SAME PLACE? Its silly for me not going to a store when I need to do errands just because Im afraid of some bimbo accusing me of following her when it just so happens I am just going grocery shopping when I need to and they are the ones copying off of me. Copycats! So how do I solve this problem when I try to explain to them in a polite way I am not following them and just so happens we think alike. Its always innocent guys who get blamed for nothing! I brought it from a small store in a mall which I guess is call an outlet mall? Not sure if it's call an outlet store, because I never went to one before. But it's a small store run by a small family that has things imported from Asian countries. It?s not store like American Eagle or well?. I?m sure someone gets what kind of store I?m talking about?. I don't remember having got a receipt since I'm guessing such small stores like those forgets or think it's not needed to give a receipt? So can exchange or returns be made without a receipt?
