Julia Child / TIME Cover: November 25, 1966, Art Poster by TIME Magazine

The most eagerly awaited event in the editorial cycle at TIME Magazine is always the selection of the cover. The best covers capture the zeitgeist of the week while surviving the judgment of history. As browsing this collection of TIME cover art prints shows, TIME is as good a record as any of who and what mattered over the past 80-plus years. And so when TIME captures a person, an event or a trend within its iconic red borders, the magazine is adding that extra dose of significance that no other publication can quite match. That is one reason why the original artwork for more than 800 TIME covers now resides in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington. Thanks to an amazing roster of artists, photographers and graphic designers, from TIME's earliest charcoal drawings of cover subjects to its later black-and-white photography to the more recent paintings and stunning color photography, TIME covers have always been, sometimes quite literally, works of great art. And, while the times may change, the TIME cover, with its iconic red border, has never lost its power to immediately send the signal that this person or event or idea is important to our lives, that in some way history is being made before our eyes.

Live Aid 20 Years Ago Today - Selections From the Four Disc Set

Billed as "the day music changed history," the Live Aid concerts of July 13, 1985, were held to raise money to fight the horrifying famines sweeping Africa. The brainchild of Bob Geldof and representing the efforts of countless musicians and technicians, Live Aid was a genuine and inspiring effort to help the victims of an overwhelming calamity. Twenty years after the twin concerts (one in London, one in Philadelphia) were broadcast worldwide, the 4-DVD treatment furthers the cause, with proceeds going toward the Band Aid Trust.
The DVD set opens with a heartbreaking documentary on the crisis, followed by videos of the two hit songs that represented the collaborative nature of Geldof's effortsBand Aid' s "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and USA for Africa's "We Are the World." Since Live Aid was never intended to be released in a recorded format, preservation of TV footage has been unreliable, resulting in some glaring omissions. Led Zeppelin's semi-reunion doesn't appear, and neither does a legendary session with Bob Dylan, Ron Wood, and Keith Richards. Some sets by performers who were popular at the time may inspire either nostalgic glee or head-scratching (Kiki Dee fans, you know who you are). Sprinkled amid these performances are a couple real gems, including a performance by Run DMC, the event's sole representative of the ascendant rap movement. Much of the music here was a passing fad, but the sentiment that brought it all together is timeless. -- Ryan Boudinot

Open Question: What stomach issue is this?
I am a 23 year old female, non-smoker, non-drinker. For years, since I was a young teenager, I've had issues with my stomach. Soon after eating meals, I get a burning sensation in my stomach that comes in waves and radiates everywhere in the stomach area and causes me to sweat a little. It either is relieved by going to the bathroom once or twice, which usually consists of loose, acidic stool (so I guess diarrhea), or else I get a few waves of the burning and then my stomach will do this gurgly thing and it subsides, though the need to go to the bathroom still sort of persists (prairie-doggin' it, to put it in grosser but plainer terms) though not with any real urgency. I sometimes feel just a little bit weak after but that goes away like that and nothing else comes of it. I normally ate bad foods before, but this can happen after having something as simple as a salad or bowl of cereal, it doesn't seem to matter what it is i eat. I can eat something one day and be fine, then eat it another day and my stomach acts up.
Is this Crohn's? Inflammatory bowel disease? Irritable bowel? Colitis? Food allergy? Some sort of blockage?
I ask this because it has recently become more persistent and urgent (though no more frequent as I can go days without any issues). I recently had a really bad bout of diarrhea and since then have had terrible reflux which i'm on prevacid for. also i havent been able to sleep, I eat okay but not as much as i was before this, and i have extreme fatigue coupled with weakness and muscle aches that has persisted for a few weeks now. I think the newer symptoms are unrelated, a virus that I made worse by not eating solids for like 10 days and losing 15 pounds and having horrible anxiety about it and also for the first few days, i tried to work (i commute 2 hours there and 2 hours back and i was doing overnights. I havent worked in roughly 4 weeks, been getting doctors notes).
But really, the bathroom issues, what does that sound like? I'm going to my doctors for the fifth time in several weeks to get this settled, so far hes been saying i basically ive worked myself up into the weakness and insomnia and that i need to relax, which i would believe if i hadnt had the symptoms BEFORE i started with the anxiety. and i had a barium swallow test done that revealed a small hiatus hernia but he said that didnt necessarily explain the severity of my reflux as the hernia is small and hes felt around my stomach numerous times and felt no lumps or swellings and said if i had an ulcer, it would hurt a great deal when he pressed on my stomach like that. and i had an ultrasound on my gall bladder, pancreas and liver which revealed no swelling or gall stones or anything.
i just want to hear theories i guess. Why does this keep happening and why does it seem to be worsening? also before the bad bout of diarrhea, id had a similar situation several weeks before where it started out with a sore throat and fatigue for a few days until one day i was struck with the burning pain which this time persisted until i HAD to get to a bathroom. I had two bouts of loose stools and that was that i figured it was just my usual issues exacerbated by the flu i thought i had.
The same thing happened with the recent bout, sore throat and much heavier fatigue this time around, then it seemed to be lifting and i was hit with really terrible dark oily diarrhea, again starting with intense burning and then i actually couldnt hold it in this time and it just kept coming. since then, i have been exhausted, have had terrible sleep, reflux, throat and sinus issues from the reflux, joint pain and weakness and i'm back to the burning until i go to the washroom and it seems to come even WHILE i'm eating now, as opposed to a short time after.
Any thoughts? (please don't tell me to go to another doctor, my doctor had been my doctor since birth, knows my history and cares about my well-being, hes a good doctor).
Also go through periods of mental clarity and periods of foggy-headedness.
Gas and bloating as well with the regular stomach issues, much more so since the bad diarrhea bout. Also with the recent bad diarrhea, felt like i might throw up but never did, which makes me think it was viral because ive never had overwhelming nausea with my usual stomach issues.
No presence of h. pylori bacteria either according to a routine blood test I had done at a check up.
Went back to my doc, hes testing me for hepatitis and mono. It was scary because the person who took my blood was quite convinced she was in the vein in my right arm, but no blood was coming out and she was like "that's weird". Then he did the left arm and blood came out, she took five vials and then I felt like I was going to pass out, and since then my feet feel cold and tingly. I hadn't eaten very much before the test so I don't know if that affects anything.
Doc is also going to put in a personal call to a GI doctor to get me an appointment for an endoscopy and possible colonoscopy which I'm not looking forward to at all...because he says the prevacid should have helped the reflux if it was just a hiatal hernia causing the issues. He also switched me back to nexium because i said that my skin, though there was no sign of redness, dryness, hives or swelling, felt like it was burning. He said "sound like an allergic reaction, I've never heard of anyone having an allergic reaction to prevacid". Like I'm so sick of all this "Wow thats odd" i am so scared its something like a tumor or something terrible i cry every day im really scared...
Also being tested for malabsorption...
Is it possible to get mono without swollen glands or a wicked sore throat? and i don't think i had a fever though I never actually checked my temp...
I have had a strange, prickly pressure in my upper left abdomen, sort of below the ribs. I know thats where the spleen is located and I know the spleen can swell with mono...
Also have a discharge coming from both ends that leaves a light light brown stain, my doc said it was a yeast infection and i took two anti-fungal things but the discharge is still there...I can't express how scared i am...
doc also prescribed a drug that is supposed to empty my stomach faster which I don't know how that will effect my bowl movements...
I've taken two of the stomach emptying drugs and the sensitivity of the skin on my stomach has gone way up again...i think its something beneath the skin, the muscles, or veins or nerves or something...this is soooo scary

Open Question: recommend a prevention/remedy for heart attack/stroke and a heart specialist in arizona.?
my short story.....
maternal family history....diabetes, cancers of many sorts(young siblings n old relatives), glaucoma, weak kidney, extreme ecxema, n a few other things.
paternal history...possible digestion problems bc some have acne/skin problems. dad finally died of a heart attack, his sisters/siblings/cousins died of the same thing.
they were all young, dad was only 42.
my sister is 47 n has had congenital heart disease for years. she is in a wheelchair, on oxygen, n got a defibrillator implant last year.
over the last few years i have had off and on high blood pressure. it was minor and i did not always need medication. i have had small symptoms of heart trouble for about 10 years. it never prevented me from doing anything and no doctor gave me any medications. about 10 years ago i noticed shortness of breath w the stair climbing, so i lost weight to accomodate. i have an extremely small frame so i went from what looked like average to skinny. that helped a lot. i did not associate the shortness of breath w anything else. there were bouts w stress and i lived in a house that poisoned me w various pollutions. the gase hot water heater was never properly hooked up and the vents were never properly cleaned. i breathed that for almost 15 years before i figured it out. i am sure that had something to do w my deterioration.
early last year i had strange things like small tightness in the jaw joint from time to time and the throat closing like a suffication/choking. i had to concentrate to squeeze down air. i never knew how to quite explain that but the doctors dismissed it. once i was eating and suddenly could not swallow no matter how hard i concentrated.
last year i went to a heart specialist w pain in my left arm. the office was horrible. they depended solely on a stress test but they could nt get the wires hooked up right. plus some girl was in training and did not know what she was doing. the supervisor came in to help but she was no better. when the visit was over i was upset because they told me nothing was wrong. just come back next year. i tried to convince them otherwise but i did not do a good job. i did not think to go to another specialist. months went by. eventually i walked down my hallway and suddenly out of the blue felt nauseous then faint. i did not faint, but since i did not know what it was i was puzzled with the episode.
about june i started to have serious shortness of breath and problems w high blood pressure. my doctor left the country and i did not find a replacement. i had daily headaches n it seems that i had them so bad it could have been a small stroke. maybe i am paranoid, but something did go wrong. the doctors have no idea what i describe to them. i am gettting upset just thinking about it but no one took this seriously so i trusted them and thought i was in better shape than i really was.
with horrific stress, divorce, job problems, financial difficulty (the usual stress killers), etc. i find that i have symptoms that i have never encountered before. pressure/light tightness from head to toe on the left side. turned to burning on the left side. flushed cheeks. dull tingling/numbness of the lower face/tongue/lips, dizziness and uncontrolled hbp. the numbers range from the low 100's to 160+. before it was far over that. when all this started the numbers were only about 125 and i thought that was horrible. it changes from minute to minute even with a stronger medication. the dull pain in my arm moved up to near my armpit then it moved to the left side of my upper chest. i try to keep it as low as possible by drinking hot tea or soup. it drops a few points (ie: from 160 to 140) but i can not seem to keep it under 140. excercise does not seem to help. my heart pounds excessively and has done so for about 4 months. it does not matter if the pressure rate is down or not.
all i take is hbp medicine and vitamins one time each day. i saw a new heart specialist who is just having me wait for testing. while i wait, i made an appointment w a 3rd heart specialist. in the meantime i asked my existing doctor (2nd) what can be done n i was told to go the ER. no thanks. the bill used to be only 50.00 for ER but now the visits are now close to 1k with insurance. the health care system i am in told me that the doctors don't contract with them anymore. after insurance, i still have a large bill.
so here i am asking you what i can do to keep my hbp under control and to prevent a heart attack and stroke. i am about 50 years old, female, over 5feet 7inches tall, small/skinny frame and i could not take any more medical/financial trauma. i never smoked/drank or did drugs but i find myself taking tylenol every day for the headaches. i never like junk food. as a baby my favorite foods were vegetables. i dont eat a perfect diet becasue of the high food prices. my kitchen has poultry, canned leafy greens, canned beans, canned tuna, canned beets, rice, dried

so here i am asking you what i can do to keep my hbp under control and to prevent a heart attack and stroke. i am about 50 years old, female, over 5feet 7inches tall, small/skinny frame and i could not take any more medical/financial trauma. i never smoked/drank or did drugs but i find myself taking tylenol every day for the headaches. i never like junk food. as a baby my favorite foods were vegetables. i dont eat a perfect diet becasue of the high food prices. my kitchen has poultry, canned leafy greens, canned beans, canned tuna, canned beets, rice, dried

Open Question: recommend a prevention/remedy for heart attacks and a heart specialist in arizona.?
my short story.....
maternal family history....diabetes, cancers of many sorts(young siblings n old relatives), glaucoma, weak kidney, extreme ecxema, n a few other things.
paternal history...possible digestion problems bc some have acne/skin problems. dad finally died of a heart attack, his sisters/siblings/cousins died of the same thing.
they were all young, dad was only 42.
my sister is 47 n has had congenital heart disease for years. she is in a wheelchair, on oxygen, n got a defibrillator implant last year.
over the last few years i have had off and on high blood pressure. it was minor and i did not always need medication. i have had small symptoms of heart trouble for about 10 years. it never prevented me from doing anything and no doctor gave me any medications. about 10 years ago i noticed shortness of breath w the stair climbing, so i lost weight to accomodate. i have an extremely small frame so i went from what looked like average to skinny. that helped a lot. i did not associate the shortness of breath w anything else. there were bouts w stress and i lived in a house that poisoned me w various pollutions. the gase hot water heater was never properly hooked up and the vents were never properly cleaned. i breathed that for almost 15 years before i figured it out. i am sure that had something to do w my deterioration.
early last year i had strange things like small tightness in the jaw joint from time to time and the throat closing like a suffication/choking. i had to concentrate to squeeze down air. i never knew how to quite explain that but the doctors dismissed it. once i was eating and suddenly could not swallow no matter how hard i concentrated.
last year i went to a heart specialist w pain in my left arm. the office was horrible. they depended solely on a stress test but they could nt get the wires hooked up right. plus some girl was in training and did not know what she was doing. the supervisor came in to help but she was no better. when the visit was over i was upset because they told me nothing was wrong. just come back next year. i tried to convince them otherwise but i did not do a good job. i did not think to go to another specialist. months went by. eventually i walked down my hallway and suddenly out of the blue felt nauseous then faint. i did not faint, but since i did not know what it was i was puzzled with the episode.
about june i started to have serious shortness of breath and problems w high blood pressure. my doctor left the country and i did not find a replacement. i had daily headaches n it seems that i had them so bad it could have been a small stroke. maybe i am paranoid, but something did go wrong. the doctors have no idea what i describe to them. i am gettting upset just thinking about it but no one took this seriously so i trusted them and thought i was in better shape than i really was.
