Open Question: Who thinks Microsoft's hiding something when it comes to faulty Xbox 360's see inside for details.?
I don't have a problem I need help with, I just wanted peoples' opinions.
I have an Xbox 360 Elite. (the black ones with 120 GB HDD hard drives) I bought it in April of 2007. I've had no issues with it at all except for a (user error) lightning strike. I was playing during a thunderstorm. Where I live we have underground power lines and phone lines. Lightning hit a tree in my front yard which happened to be right over the phone line. I use a surge protector so damage didn't come through power line.
We have two phone lines in our house see chart below>
Primary = Phone number, and ATT DSL internet
Secondary = Fax machine, and back-up dial-up internet
Now the router/modem (lets just call it the gateway for future purposes) provided by ATT, was pluged into a surge protector, the only problem was the back-up phone line was pluged into it for some reason.
Lightning hit the tree, down tree into phone line, through phone line to gateway, kills gateway then comes through 150 ft ethernet cable down 1 floor to my room and fries my xbox. User error seriously my fault I was playing in thunderstorm.
THIS WAS NOT RED RING OF DEATH. It froze, so I thought it was fine, turned it off and back on and I get error code: E86.
I called tech support and actually got a real person who actually spoke understandable English (amazing right) anyway he walked me through getting it fixed or replaced. I shipped it to Texas for repair.
1st of a few questions= What do you think killed the Xbox, Phone line surge, EMP burst from lightning being so close, or other.
about 2 1/2 weeks later I get my box back. There was a letter inside saying:
Dear valued customer,
In order to get you back playing and enjoying your Xbox 360, we have sent you a replacement unit.
2nd question= (I'm happy that I got a more recently made Xbox as a replacement but-->) Do they do that to everybody or do they actually repair some and send them back?
3rd Question= Anybody who has personal expierence or knows any details, feel free to answer. Since I had an Elite did they rush my order, because my brother has a normal one and he said it took his an entire month to get back.
Back to my real subject, I have never heard of any Elite getting the RROD (Red Ring of Death) nor has mine ever had any manufacturing problems. Except for freezing up when I play my original xbox version of SW Battlefront II (disc is very scratched up)
My Elite won't even flash red when I pull the video cable out when it's in use. (if I understand correctly thats what their suppodsed to do right?)
Bottom line and final question is below:
Does microsoft give special treatment to customers owning an Elite? Including better testing and manufacturing of consoles?
P.S. If any body knows a free forum or blog site I would be happy to discuss this there. I know that some people have strong feelings about this issue and I know that you have limmited space for an answer.
Also note: the lightning strike happened in June of '08, it's now Jan '09

Ok this I would really like to know.
I bought a 100 ft ethernet cable for my xbox instead of a wireless adapter.
Reason=I at the time, didn't know the encryption code on my internet, when we got the new gateway (free replacement courtesy of ATT) we had to reconnect my desktop computer. It is 1 floor below our internet gateway so we didn't have much of a choice. Using Halo 3 as an example I used to always have 5 green bars for connection and sometimes 4. Now I have 3 yellow bars and 4 green bars, 5 is still common, and 2 red bars happened once.
Do you think the lightning damaged the cable in any way, even though it still works?

Open Question: USB Mouse and Keyboard not working in windows after deleting upper and lower filters. Please help.?
USB Mouse and Keyboard not working in windows?
Hello everyone, I came across this forum and decided to try my question here. It seems to be unanswerable for a lot of people but I'll give you guys a shot.
I have a dell dimension 9150 running windows xp and here is my problem
-First off the computer has no ps/2 connectors
-I start my computer with the mouse and keyboard plugged into the usb ports, it works outside of windows (F2 to get into the bios, F8 to do a safe start, I can move around in them with the keyboard)
-I get into windows and the mouse and keyboard don't work at all, I can't navigate anywhere
-I unplug the keyboard and mouse and restart and plug them in when windows is loaded it says it loaded the drivers, and since I have an optical mouse I know it's getting power, but it's not working at all.
-I've tried every USB port on there and I get nothing
-I plug in my Creative Zen Vision:M and it starts charging and the quick open window opens up but I can't select anything because the keyboard and mouse aren't working
-I get power to my flash drive but can't do anything because once again the keyboard and mouse
Before all this trouble I was having troubles with my dvd burner and came across a fix for my problems, or so I thought, using regedit, these were the instructions
In the Open box, type Regedit, and then click OK.
Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click the plus sign (+) next to SYSTEM.
Click the plus sign (+) next to CurrentControlSet.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Control.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Class.
Click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
On the right hand side of the window, click UpperFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
On the right-hand side of the window, click LowerFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
Click File, and then click Exit.
Restart the computer normally.
To my surprise there were about 15 different "4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318" in there so I went to all the Upper filters and deleted them (I don't remember the names, there were 3 upper and 3 lower)
I restarted the computer and now here I am with this delema.
once this happened I tried rebooting in safe mode, I tried last known good configuration, and I even had a tuneup utilities backup that I made about a year ago that I decided to try out. None of which helped. I've tried everything in the bios (which is barely tweakable on a dell). I even restored the bios settings to factory default. And still nothings
My ideas at the moment from reading around are to
1. Buy a new USB card, but it doesn't look like they're interchangable, and if I needed a new one why would things be read through the usb but the keyboard and mouse still don't work?
2. Buy an external HDD case for an SATA hard drive, take it out of the computer with the problems, hook it up to the usb on this old computer and try to fix the registry (somehow) that way.
3. This is a very last option that I really don't want to have to do, but reinstall windows (don't know if you can do it without being able to navigate windows anyway). I have a couple files on there I can't risk losing (but I guess I'll have to if it's the last option there is)
Any help, ideas, or anything would be greatly appreciated. I hope I gave enough info for this to be answered.

Open Question: Y does my computer turn on and off by itslef like a ghost?
My Computer often turns itslef on anf off by itself. As in while it's plugged it randomly powers up, at then shuts off from 5 seconds to 5 minutes later.
I've read a couple forums and i doubt it has anything to do with wake-on lan or ring, because it is not connected to either phone line, ethernet cable, or a LAN. All I'm seeing is possibly broken PSU, heatsink issue, or motherboard issue. Couldn't find a forum with a final answer but most people said no to broken PSU.
Someone's got to be familar with this problem.

Open Question: Notebook BIOS Password?
I have a Compaq Armada 1130 notebook, circa 1996. (ok , you can stop laughing now). I have been the only owner of the notebook. I have not used it in several years. I need to use it now. The Real Time Clock battery was dead so I bought a new one and replaced it. Every time I boot the notebook, I am prompted for a Power-On Password. I never set one. I have searched Compaq's forum and have tried everything there with no luck. I have tried different hard drives to no avail. I have tried booting without the RTC battery and with it, still asks for password. I have tried with and without the (main) battery, still asks for password. I am not sure which chip is the BIOS or where it's located so popping it out and getting a new one may not be an option.
Any help would be great.

I went to the invision power site to buy ipb forums, but it costs 165$ for one year. I have heard that it's only 20$, but where would I get it for this price? I don't want the free version either at ipbfree.com. I want the license.

Open Question: The pk order, will you join this runescape clan?
I am Fire_fox_06, leader of The Pk Order. I would like to introduce myself as a former Pker starting a clan for fellow Pkers. In this clan we will have Range and Mage or just plain melee.(f2p pking)
Requirements:
1.Combat must be 70+.
2.Range must be 80+ if you are a Ranger.
3. Magic must be 75+ if you are a mager.
4. melee, Must be able to wear rune
Rankings:
1.Recruits will remain recuits until they are deemed worthy to advance a level.
2.corporals will be the next step up, it means they have been here a while and will start getting for credit for kills, time in the clan and everything contributed.
3.Sergeants have been in the clan for a while and have contributed, and start getting powers in the clan.
4.Lietenants will start getting powers in the clan like moderator for the forums, and will be a clan chat mod.
5.Captains being a captain will make you apart of the council that decides the fate of the clan, and is the second highest rank in the clan, they will mod everything and have contributed a lot to the clan.
6.Generals you have been in the clan the longest or are a founder, you have contributed the most and have been awarded the best rank in the clan. You will be a moderator and have a guarenteed spot in the council.
7.Council Member a council member will decide things for the clan like events, and special events and will help out with the forums.
Forum Groups:
1.Council the council is basically covered right above.
2.Graphics Team will make graphics for our clan to recruit or make graphics for our clan members.
3.Events Team the events team will help plan our events and schedule, they will also be one of the bigger helpers when it comes to our clan.
4.Rangers are the fastest hitters and is led by Fire_Fox_06.
5.Magers are the people who take down meleers led by Axaxa12.
6.Meleers are the biggest group and usually most popular, they are the power in the clan led by Mr_Death_13.
7. PKO Skillers will supply food, arrows and any items needed. They may do non combat events and are considered equal to pkers here. Also they may advance in rank due to activity and other reasons.

Open Question: Has anyone watched "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men"?
I cant link it since its in a forum of movies.
Kirk died 12 months ago (I assume by the looks of it, as part of Generations first part story), and someone still wants revenge against him.
Uhurra and Chekov have come aboard a newer Enterprise with the captain from Generations, and are planning to be part of a dedication of the ship that was designed right after the very original, to Kirk.
When they get a distress signal from M662 (i think i have that name right) they get worried. They land there only to encounter a guy who has a ability to hurt people with brain power. He then uses a portal to change history.
Ive gotten just past that where its obviously set in the alternate universe and now the same crew are part of the more empire style Federation.
i meant to ask, what did you think of it?

Resolved Question: Writing a sci-fi fantasy series - What can I do about the weirdness?
----Brief Introduction----
I've been writing a fantasy/sci-fi series for adults (more fantasy than sci-fi). I've written the rough drafts of two of the hopefully six books. This series concentrates mostly on character development and there is a strong focus on inner struggle.
The series takes place on one planet/world, and all the events in the story contain one kingdom on this planet. The main characters are not exactly humans. They are a different race that lived in the land long ago, but only a remnant is left now. We?ll call them ?Race X?. They look the same and have the same emotions, but they have enhanced senses. For example they can sense when another person of their race is near, and they are much tougher and difficult to kill.
Before I get to my question please remember that I am not giving you a complete summary of my series. I will say only what I need to say to explain my question. I'm saying this because I have asked questions relating to my work on internet forums before and people seem to assume that everything I've written in my post is everything that is in the story. They'll say things like "u need 2 devellup yur story moer" even though they haven't even heard 1% of the story.
This doesn't mean I don't want constructive criticism. It just means I want the criticism to be about the specific aspect that I mention in my question.
----Shrines & Powers----
In the story, one of the central characters (we?ll call him Jim), who is one of the remnants of Race X goes to shrines built by his ancestors for religious purposes (the deities, however, were not real, as there is no spirituality in the series). The shrines have intricate designs engraved on the walls. Touching the design on the wall will activate latent abilities in the character.
I have not decided exactly how these work. I?ve been thinking of them as otherworldly technology, and by otherworldly I just mean the fictional world where the story takes place. The technology is not computer based technology. It?s more like a sort of energy that goes into the brain and opens up neural pathways that allow the abilities to be used. It makes sense that there would be different kinds of energy in a world different from our own, right? It also makes sense that an ancient and advanced civilization (Race X) would be able to harness it.
Again, I haven?t exactly decided on this so if you have a better idea let me know.
There are 11 ?powers? in total, but only 7 shrines remain (the others were destroyed). Jim gets 5 of them over the course of the 6 books. The first one he gets is not really a power but a mental map of the shrines. It is more like information than a complete visual picture, but it gives him good ideas of where the shrines are located, and he can sense when he is near them.
Another power he gets is the power of prophecy. It lets him see events in the past, present, and future. He sees these ?visions? at random times, but he has to be seeing or thinking about something connected with the event. For example, he sees a house and then sees a vision of someone dying there and gets the idea that it will happen in the future.
One of the first things he saw was how the kingdom would be destroyed. The ?vision? was triggered by him merely thinking about how the kingdom might get destroyed after a friend of his was talking about it. His thoughts triggered the vision because they concerned the same subject.
-----My Problem----
The problem I have with all this stuff is that these powers are hard to explain unless you use magic or something spiritual, which I prefer not to do. Like I said, I had been thinking of it as energy, and I thought that could excuse everything the same way magic can, but now I am reconsidering this.
Of course, otherworldly energy can explain some things. The fact that the characters are another race (Race X) can also explain a few things. My main problem is the whole seeing into the future thing. It is a difficult thing to explain if you don?t explain it with magic or spirituality.
The way I would explain it is that the future is not exactly set in stone, but the power allows Jim to see what will happen in the future as a sort of vague memory. It is NOT merely a possible future; it is THE future that would happen unless someone who knew the future acted upon it. Of course, all that really doesn't explain it as much as it should be explained, so I could use help with this.
I don?t exactly have immense scientific knowledge, so I don?t really know much about theories about time, which probably means I should study it. But I know it?s been used in fiction. The show HEROES has a character that can paint the future, which suggests that there is an actual future that can be predicted.
And before anyone asks...no I did not get my ideas from HEROES. I started developing all of this before the show came out.
OK, now you know what you need to know to help me out. What do you think about all that?
Do you think that the ability to see the future is not possible unless it is explained by spirituality or magic? How would you explain the ability to see into the future? What?s your take on the whole energy thing? What do you think about Race X and their abilities?
Remember, this is not a summary of the book in any way. It's a question about one aspect of the book. It is not in itself the main storyline. I just want to stress that the series does not consist entirely of the characters scampering around looking for ancient shrines.
I think the main thing I need help with is the idea of a future, but of course I would also like your opinion on the whole energy thing. Do you think it works?
