This new version of the Fiddler on the Roof soundtrack coincides with the movie's 30th anniversary (which is also celebrated by a special edition DVD). The CD is notable for several instrumental tracks by John Williams, as well as for "Any Day Now," a previously unreleased song performed by Perchik/Paul Michael Glaser (better known for his starring role in TV's Starsky and Hutch). The soundtrack is often compared unfavorably with the original 1964 cast album, in which Zero Mostel played the part of Tevye (here performed by Topol, who had been in the 1967 London production). But this CD has a lot going for it, including glossy remastering and, of course, Isaac Stern as the fiddler. In the end, whatever version you decide to pick up, Fiddler remains one of the most enduring musicals of all time. --Elisabeth VincentelliAtists: Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick, Topol

You don't have to actually like Cher to at least respect her for having the chutzpah and sheer resilience to overcome any number of ill-conceived moves (most of which she acknowledges with wry self-deprecation), including bad records, disastrous relationships, embarrassing infomercials, and enough cosmetic surgery to underwrite several surgeons' Beverly Hills manors. This 90-minute concert, filmed in Las Vegas in '99 and subsequently broadcast on HBO, is Cher in all her kitschy glory. She's a performer, not just a singer (a good thing, given her limited if distinctive voice), and the show gives us the requisite array of Bob Mackie costumes (Valkyrie and vamp, pirate and prostitute, and one item that she herself describes as "Bozo the Clown meets Braveheart"), wigs galore, a host of beautiful bodies writhing about onstage in what might charitably be called "interpretive dances" (also known as "filler while the star changes outfits").... Oh, and there's music too, from the old hits ("Half Breed," "Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves") to "Believe," the late '90s techno-dance smash that here is saved until last, with a few covers thrown in for good measure (U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"? Go figure). We also get some old Sonny & Cher TV clips (bet you didn't remember that Ronald Reagan and David Bowie appeared on their show), highlights from her very impressive film career, still photos, drawings of Mackie's creations, and the "Walking in Memphis" music video. All in all, it's a weird, extravagant, campy stew, and a heck of a fun ride. --Sam Graham

Disney's 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it one of the studio's stronger feature-length cartoons. Songs include "The Bare Necessities" and "Trust in Me." --Tom KeoghDirector: Wolfgang Reitherman

A minor classic from Disney, this 1973 all-animal, all-animated musical version of the familiar story is more charming than one might expect. Perhaps it's the warm, chummy take on key relationships within the legend--the way Robin Hood (Brian Bedford) gets twitterpated whenever the subject of Maid Marian (Monica Evans) comes up or the way best pal Little John (Phil Harris voicing a variation on his own Baloo from The Jungle Book) admonishes the Sherwood Forest hero, "Aw, Rob, why dontcha just marry the girl?" (Then, of course, there's the canny "casting" of the romantic leads as foxes: Robin the sly one and Marian the, well, foxy one.) The rest of the vocal cast is lively and eclectic: Peter Ustinov, Andy Devine, Terry-Thomas, George Lindsey. Roger Miller provides the songs and voice for the minstrel character Allan-A-Dale. The film is ably directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, whose decades of work in Disney's animation division helped create the studio's rich legacy. --Tom KeoghDirector: Wolfgang Reitherman

Duchess and her three kittens are enjoying the high life with their devoted human mistress until the wicked butler Edgar, with his eyes on a big inheritance, decides to dope them and get them out of the picture. How can these fragile creatures cope in the unfamiliar countryside and the meaner streets of Paris? Only by meeting the irrepressible alley cat O'Malley, a rough diamond with romance in his heart. After they get a taste of the wide dangerous world, he guides them home, and Edgar gets his just desserts at the wrong end of a horse. As always, it's really the voices rather than the animation that are the heart of the Disney magic: Phil Harris is brilliant as O'Malley, Eva Gabor as Duchess is... well... Eva Gabor; but perhaps the most memorable turns are by Pat Buttram and George Lindsay, who turn the old hounds Napoleon and Lafayette into a couple of bumbling Southern-fried rednecks. Their scenes with Edgar, and the musical numbers with Scat Cat and his cool-dude band, are classic. Most striking about seeing The Aristocats now is how deeply Disney's style of animation has changed since this was at the cutting edge in 1970. Perhaps the nostalgic, dated feel are just a result of being plonked down in Belle Epoque Paris, but the illustrations are fussier (a pity) and the animation and overall pace much less frenetic (sometimes a relief) than in more recent efforts such as Aladdin. --Richard FarrDirector: Wolfgang Reitherman
