This excellent installment in Dave Hood's There Goes a... series of children's videos finds "Firefighter Dave" learning the ins and outs of a real firefighter's life. Taking the viewer on an extensive tour of various kinds of firetrucks (the ones with ladders, the ones that store everything from traffic cones to oxygen tanks), Hood also introduces us to a few of the heroic folks who risk their lives on the job. We see the rapid process by which firefighters (male and female, incidentally) get from their comfortable bunks in the station house into their protective gear, then hit the road and fight those raging flames. (We also learn that when these public servants aren't out saving lives and property, they're doing mundane, home-like chores at the station.) The result is a deservingly noble portrait of the firefighting profession. This is one of the liveliest of the There Goes a... productions, and the balance of verbal instruction against the sheer rush of seeing firetrucks on the move is perfect. --Tom Keogh

I currently have ubuntu installed on this computer: Dell Optiplex 330 Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS Desktop Edition 512mb RAM 128mb video card .. i forgot if it was onboard or real card 1.46GHz Intel Celeron processor CD reader 80gb hard drive I had windows before, but I get an error message everytime I try to install windows. After the setup disk loads its files, it gives me a blue screen of death. I called Dell support, and they said that ubuntu changed my hard drive's file system. They told me to remove the partition and change the file system using the ubuntu cd. When I boot from the live cd, I get these options when choosing a file system: Ext3 journaling file system Ext2 file system ReiserfFS journaling file system jFS journaling file system XFS journaling file system FAT16 file system FAT32 file system swap area EFI boot partition do not use this parition Which one do I pick? FAT16 is probably too small for an 80gb.. so is FAT32, and the rest I don't understand. There is also a Mount point which I get these options: / /boot /home /tmp /usr /var /srv /opt /usr/local Which one do I pick? There is also a location for the new partition, and I get these options: beginning end There's the type of partition: primary logical And the partition size, which you can choose depending on your hard drive size. What do I do? I need to install windows. Or do I just delete the partition? And leave it as "free space?" Does that change the file system? Cuz Dell said I had to delete the partition AND change the file system. (more...)

Should candidates for public office be required to keep their campaign promises? Why? Yes, I think that political candidates should keep their promises that they made during the campaign, because the voters voted for the candidates because of what they said they would and would not do. If a candidate would have been elected and said that they would lower taxes and make sure everyone had health insurance, then when they went into office and didn?t keep their promises, the voters wouldn?t be happy because basically they would have voted for a liar. The political candidates are taking a big part in the country to step up and do their job. Voters should know already that the candidates are real and believable, and that they can take them for their word. They shouldn?t have to wait until after they elected them to find out that the candidate wasn?t going to follow through with what they said they would. If the politician said they would make promises to help stop the war and keep our troops and families safe, then we should be able to rely on what they had told us during the campaigns. Many families are dealing with theses situations, of having to worry about a loved one being in harm. With additional life situations dealing with finical support, worrying about their children being safe on the streets, and keeping their houses. Many of the single parents? who?s loved ones aren?t with them, but at war, have to worry about working extra time to keep a roof over their families? heads and not being able to spend time with their children. My family also has to worry about this. My cousin is engaged, and her fiancé is in Iraq fighting for our country. This is his second time being deployed there; he has already received the Purple Heart. The Purple Heart is the honor you receive at war for being hurt while still fighting. However, it is very difficult for her to plan a wedding, pay her bills, and plan for her future with all of the worries she has of hoping that he will come home safe. It?s the holiday season, and many adults are loosing their jobs because the economy and the stock market are failing. This is because the politicians, who made their promises, aren?t changing what is affecting everyday lives. The everyday necessities are becoming more and more difficult to keep up with, keeping food on the table and clothes on our backs. Also, lots of kids won?t be able to get any holiday gifts this year because their parents have lost their jobs, and can not afford to buy presents and pay for the heat and water bills at the same time All of these major circumstances revolve around what our future politicians have told us during their campaign. They have made us promises that many people rely on, for their future and their day-to-day life. When the candidates tell us their promises, it gives us a good idea on who to vote for, hoping that each candidate will follow through with their ideas. Not only do the parents of today have to worry about this, but this is affecting our future. (more...)

CLARISSAS DRAGON Any tips would be appreciated! Tears, screaming and anger filled the O?Gommery home; mass chaos was all to be discovered. Clarissa O?Gommery just found out that last night around 11:45 pm her great-granny was sent to the hospital. She was experiencing head pains and numbness down her legs. The O?Gommery parents decided it would be best to take Clarissa to see her great-granny, knowing that they didn?t know how long she was going to last. During the short ride to the hospital, the car was very silent; Clarissa was confused her great-granny seemed to be all right yesterday. Questions and concerns wondered in her head. ?Will great-granny be all right? Is she going to die? ? these words were spoken with fear, her pants were now drenched with tears of sorrow. There was a moment of silence as the car screeched into the parking lot. Smells of fresh roses and lavender filled the lobby. There were beautiful inspiring quotes on the walls, flowers happy nurses and doctors. It seemed like a pretty good atmosphere and I was glad that great-granny was in good hands. Mrs. O?Gommery stepped up to the desk and asked where great-granny was? After some negotiating, compromising and bribing the nurse agreed to show us where she was, even though visiting hours were almost over. -2- We followed the nurse down a long wide corridor. Before we entered the room, we had to listen to the nurse. ?Your great-granny Edna is in critical condition she is going in and out a lot, the only thing we ask you is to not make her upset.? The nurse then opened the door; there on the bed was great-granny she was hooked up to a whole bunch of machines beeping loudly. ?Mommy, daddy may I please have a moment alone with great-granny?? They turned to face each other, there were a few minutes of controversy and then they honoured my wish and left. ?Great-granny I don?t know if you can hear me but..? ?Clarissa dear I am here for you.? her voice was crackling, quiet and spoken with difficulty. ?Granny please don?t leave me ?? ?Listen to me, my dear in the attic of your home, which is where I lived when I was a young girl? ?I never knew you used to live in my house?? ?Please don?t interrupt me, so in the attic there is a diary? ?Visiting hours are over? the nurse boomed, stopping granny?s sentence. As we were leaving after giving hugs and kisses granny said one more thing to me. ?Clarissa you need to help the trolls, they will need you, your assistance is needed.? I was then taken by the hand and forced to leave before I could ask her what she was talking about. During the entire ride home, I could not get my mind off the subject. Trolls didn?t exist in the real world, did they? I stopped myself in the 10 years of my life I had never heard of -3- a troll wandering around or even being spotted anywhere. It was impossible, wasn?t it? As I was walking to my bedroom, I happened to glance up. Just in the hallway outside my bedroom was a set of folding stairs that led up to the attic. I remembered what great-granny had said about the diary. Although mother and father had forbidden me from going into the attic. They said it was too unsafe. ?Clarissa I will be up in a minute, please get ready for bed and I will be right there.? I hurried to my room and started getting ready, just as the phone rang. I leaned over the stairs to listen to what my mother was saying. ?Hello? my mother started with. Then there was a slight hesitation. ?Yes?? ?Oh no? my mother sounded very worried. ?Do we need to come right now?? ?Oh okay then? my mother sounded very relieved. ?Thank you?good bye.? As she placed, the phone down I lay down in bed and wondered whom she was talking to. I listed all the possibilities in my head. She seemed very worried walking into my room. ?Clarissa I have some very bad news to inform you about.? I held my stomach hoping for the best. ?Your great-granny? I could only think of the worst. ?She is getting worse and the doctors can?t figure out what is wrong with her, even after all of the tests they have tried.? ?They say she keeps murmuring something about a diary in an attic? Do you know anything about this?? she sounded very worried and extremely confused. ?No, I don?t know? I stumbled and stuttered. It was hard to lie to my mother. ?Alright then you have a good night and we will visit her tomorrow.? As I lay there motionless, I await the time when I would hear my parents no more. I had to go and search for -4- the diary that great-granny was talking about? Even though I was forbidden to go to the attic, I would just have to face the consequences. The hallway was dark and the floorboards creaked as I walked along. I hear a rustle someone was behind me I spun around. I looked down and luckily, it was only my kitten crumbles. I've missed my period three months in a row now. In november, around the 15th, I did get a light, two or three day flow. My periods are usually pretty light and last about two to three days, but they start somewhere between the 25th and the 29th. However, it's not always regular, and I've missed a month before, but never more than once in a row. I just took a home pregnancy test and it was negative. Why else could this be happening. Additional information: I'm sixteen years old. I'm at a healthy weight, and my weight hasn't fluctuated more than 5 pounds in the last year. The last time I had sex was October 13th. I've missed October, November (except for the 15th), and December, I'm still waiting to see what happens this month. No major changes in diet or schedule recently. No real stress or anxiety. No nausea, vomiting, headaches, or anything I can remember. I'm not taking any medications. I feel just fine, but I'm not getting my periods, what's going on? I plan on going to a doctor, I'm just looking for further information from anyone who has been in a similar situation, or knows what I may be looking at. If it's important at all, I have a history of ovarian cysts, and have had one surgery to remove one once that caused a lot of problems. That was at least 18 months ago, and I've been totally fine since. I healed well from it, and haven't had any complications from it. I started my period in 2005, I haven't had any irregularity since last year around March or April? Some before that, but really nothing since then. (more...)

Students in my past algebra classes (college level) have informed me that the textbooks do not have enough examples and lack detail. (I don't want to go into the details of this, but it's mainly to reduce the cost of the book). I am currently working on an example book just for ALGEBRA. The purpose of this book is to provide a variety of examples for students. I do plan on marketing this book for teachers, students as well home-schoolers. There will be detailed examples at different degrees of difficulty. It will also contain practice problems, with the solutions online. In addition, a few of the examples will require thought process, and will not be found in any other textbooks. It will also contain real life application problems that use algebra, unlike those train problems. This will give students an interesting perspective on algebra. I realize there are some books out there such as Schaum's outlines or Cliff Notes, but they usually only contain simple examples that you can find in any math book. I am not recommending students learn algebra from this book. It should not be mistaken for a textbook, but rather an example book to be used along with the required textbook. I would like to hear from some of you and what you think. Any suggestions are appreciated. (more...)

I'm looking for a pet of some type to love, take care of and for companionship. I live in the city (a small one anyways), so livestock (i.e. pigs, cows, horses, chicken, etc.) are not legal here. I'm limited as to the other options, due to hubby's dislikes and mine as well. I do not have kids, so that's one issue I don't have to worry about. I don't like cats that much, they tend to be lazy and claw furnature; or at least that's been my experience in the past. I like snakes, but the last one I considered buying bit the man who was showing it to me; scared to crap out of me! Other reptiles are cool, but limited as to my options of handeling that are limited. Hubby said no rats, mice or farrets; they "smell bad" and he doesn't want the house to smell. I have tried a few dogs, but they don't work. We both value our sleep and the nice furnature in our home; they shed, "potty" in the house and cry during the night. Guess I'm not to set on getting one or I would be more willing to deal with those issues. Anyways, can anyone suggest a different kind of animal to have? I thought of volenteering so that I could spend time with the animals, but not have them in my home to mess it up or hinder my quiet and pieceful nights. I offered my help to local animal shelters via email, but have heard nothing back. Any suggestions? Please, only serious ones that are not mean in nature. This is a real and genuine question that I would appreciate an honest responce to. Than k you for your help! P.S. I DON"T like fish in the slightest. I tried that and the poor guys died in the first day. Guess I suck at that; but at least I tried. (more...)

a "real" dog so he got a 125lbs 6 ft. mastif. My cat hasn't come out of my bedroom for two weeks because the dog scares him. My question-We are moving in 2 two weeks, and my husband told me to just find a home for my baby. Can anyone out there give me some tips on how to get this cat and dog to be civil to each other?
