The Cyanide Canary
The Cyanide Canary "The Cyanide Canary" is the riveting true story of a horrific crime -- of a brave young man left for dead, an unscrupulous business mogul, and the relentless EPA investigator who fought to overcome injustice. On a crisp summer morning in Soda Springs, Idaho, twenty-year-old Scott Dominguez kissed his fiance e goodbye and went to work for Allan Elias, the owner of Evergreen Resources, an enterprise Dominguez thought was in the business of producing fertilizer from mining waste. A former high school wrestler blessed with Tom Cruise-like good looks, Dominguez seemed to have unlimited potential, but by eleven o'clock that morning he was fighting for his life, pulled unconscious from a cyanide-laced storage tank and not expected to live through the night. In Seattle, Special Agent Joseph Hilldorfer of the Environmental Protection Agency was given the job of finding out what happened to Dominguez and why. Initially Hilldorfer did not want the case, still frustrated by an intense two-year investigation that concluded with corporate polluters walking out of a federal courthouse free. But as he learned more, Hilldorfer, the son of a Pittsburgh cop with a blue-collar work ethic, was touched by Scott's suffering and outraged at Elias's callous disregard for his employees' well-being. Hilldorfer and his partner, Special Agent Bob Wojnicz, joined forces with seasoned Boise Assistant U.S. Attorney George Breitsameter and an indefatigable, brilliant young attorney from the Department of Justice's Environmental Crimes Section named David Uhlmann. Together they would uncover the horrifying truths and build the criminal case against Elias. A former New York whiz kid and Arizona realestateand business mogul, Elias owned businesses that had polluted Idaho with hazardous waste for nearly a decade. Yet Elias never spent a single day in jail, openly boasted of beating the environmental quality regulations, and avoided any significant fines. Would this case be any different? Hilldorfer, Uhlmann, and the government trial team embarked on an epic courtroom battle that would stretch them to the limits. What began as a struggle for justice for one young man became a fight by the EPA for its very ability to enforce the nation's environmental laws and to bring environmental polluters to justice. In the balance was whether Allan Elias would ever spend a day in jail. Gripping, powerful, and compulsively readable, "The Cyanide Canary" is a major achievement in the classic tradition of "A Civil Action," a book that unfolds like fiction yet is alarmingly true.

Public Power, Private Dams: The Hells Canyon High Dam Controversy (Weyerhaeuser Environmental Books)
Public Power, Private Dams: The Hells Canyon High Dam Controversy (Weyerhaeuser Environmental Books) In the years following World War II, the world’s biggest dam was almost built in Hells Canyon on the Snake River in Idaho. Karl Boyd Brooks tells the story of the dam controversy, which became a referendum not only on public-power expansion but also on the environmental implications of the New Deal’s natural -- resources and economic policy.

Private-power critics of the Hells Canyon High Dam posed difficult questions about the implications of damming rivers to create power and to grow crops. Activists, attorneys, and scientists pioneered legal tactics and political rhetoric that would help to define the environmental movement in the 1960s. The debate, however, was less about endangered salmon or threatened wild country and more about who would control land and water and whether state enterprise or private capital would oversee the supply of electricity.

By thwarting the dam’s construction, Snake Basin irrigators retained control over water as well as economic and political power in Idaho, putting the state on a postwar path that diverged markedly from that of bordering states. In the end, the opponents of the dam were responsible for preserving high deserts and mountain rivers from radical change.

With Public Power, Private Dams, Karl Brooks makes an important contribution not only to the history of the Pacific Northwest and the region’s anadromous fisheries but also to the environmental history of the United States in the period after World War II.

Resolved Question: Creationists, what do you think of these observed instances of speciation .(Macroevolution)?
Speciation in plants Evening Primrose (Oenothera gigas) While studying the genetics of the evening primrose, Oenothera lamarckiana, de Vries (1905) found an unusual variant among his plants. O. lamarckiana has a chromosome number of 2N = 14. The variant had a chromosome number of 2N = 28. He found that he was unable to breed this variant with O. lamarckiana. He named this new species O. gigas. Kew Primrose (Primula kewensis) Digby (1912) crossed the primrose species Primula verticillata and P. floribunda to produce a sterile hybrid. Polyploidization occurred in a few of these plants to produce fertile offspring. The new species was named P. kewensis. Newton and Pellew (1929) note that spontaneous hybrids of P. verticillata and P. floribunda set tetraploid seed on at least three occasions. These happened in 1905, 1923 and 1926. Tragopogon Owenby (1950) demonstrated that two species in this genus were produced by polyploidization from hybrids. He showed that Tragopogon miscellus found in a colony in Moscow, Idaho was produced by hybridization of T. dubius and T. pratensis. He also showed that T. mirus found in a colony near Pullman, Washington was produced by hybridization of T. dubius and T. porrifolius. Evidence from chloroplast DNA suggests that T. mirus has originated independently by hybridization in eastern Washington and western Idaho at least three times (Soltis and Soltis 1989). The same study also shows multiple origins for T. micellus. Raphanobrassica The Russian cytologist Karpchenko (1927, 1928) crossed the radish, Raphanus sativus, with the cabbage, Brassica oleracea. Despite the fact that the plants were in different genera, he got a sterile hybrid. Some unreduced gametes were formed in the hybrids. This allowed for the production of seed. Plants grown from the seeds were interfertile with each other. They were not interfertile with either parental species. Unfortunately the new plant (genus Raphanobrassica) had the foliage of a radish and the root of a cabbage. Hemp Nettle (Galeopsis tetrahit) A species of hemp nettle, Galeopsis tetrahit, was hypothesized to be the result of a natural hybridization of two other species, G. pubescens and G. speciosa (Muntzing 1932). The two species were crossed. The hybrids matched G. tetrahit in both visible features and chromosome morphology. Apple Maggot Fly (Rhagoletis pomonella) Rhagoletis pomonella is a fly that is native to North America. Its normal host is the hawthorn tree. Sometime during the nineteenth century it began to infest apple trees. Since then it has begun to infest cherries, roses, pears and possibly other members of the rosaceae. Quite a bit of work has been done on the differences between flies infesting hawthorn and flies infesting apple. There appear to be differences in host preferences among populations. Offspring of females collected from on of these two hosts are more likely to select that host for oviposition (Prokopy et al. 1988). Genetic differences between flies on these two hosts have been found at 6 out of 13 allozyme loci (Feder et al. 1988, see also McPheron et al. 1988). Laboratory studies have shown an asynchrony in emergence time of adults between these two host races (Smith 1988). Flies from apple trees take about 40 days to mature, whereas flies from hawthorn trees take 54-60 days to mature. This makes sense when we consider that hawthorn fruit tends to mature later in the season that apples. Hybridization studies show that host preferences are inherited, but give no evidence of barriers to mating. This is a very exciting case. It may represent the early stages of a sympatric speciation event (considering the dispersal of R. pomonella to other plants it may even represent the beginning of an adaptive radiation). It is important to note that some of the leading researchers on this question are urging caution in interpreting it. Feder and Bush (1989) stated: "Hawthorn and apple "host races" of R. pomonella may therefore represent incipient species. However, it remains to be seen whether host-associated traits can evolve into effective enough barriers to gene flow to result eventually in the complete reproductive isolation of R. pomonella populations." Gall Former Fly (Eurosta solidaginis) Eurosta solidaginis is a gall forming fly that is associated with goldenrod plants. It has two hosts: over most of its range it lays its eggs in Solidago altissima, but in some areas it uses S. gigantea as its host. Recent electrophoretic work has shown that the genetic distances among flies from different sympatric hosts species are greater than the distances among flies on the same host in different geographic areas (Waring et al. 1990). This same study also found reduced variability in flies on S. gigantea. This suggests that some E. solidaginis have recently shifted hosts to this species. A recent study has compared reproductive behavior of the flies associated with the two hos there is more at http://toarchive.org/faqs/faq-speciation.html "No Chance Without Jesus," you will find that many share the same thought about creationism., By the way, some people here might mention "But it is still a fly," or "It is still a plant." If evolution can be observed up to the level of "species," why is "Kindation " (for lack of a better term.) so implausible ? (more...)

Resolved Question: i think im a nut.[long, but i guess interesting]?
yeah this is going to sound totally crazy. and it is. and seriously i am not making this up. i dont really tell people this usually because they either think im imagining it or that i just want attention. sometimes when im dreaming ill have an extremely short clip of an image, kind of like a commercial. its usually a clip lasting only a few seconds of an event of seemingly no importance. once when i was a little kid, i was too excited to go to sleep because i was going on vacation to cedar island. i had an extremely short dream of myself walking down a small stairway of about 3 steps in yellow shoes. as i stepped on the last step my leg made a reflex and i woke up. a few weeks later on vacation at cedar island my water socks had holes in the toes from walking over the rocks on the edge of the water. so i went to the mainland to get a new pair. we went to the store and it being summer and all they were sold out, except for one color: an unsightly yellow. i thought it was extremely weird. i think i told people but they i dont think any of them took me seriously. another time this happened, a few summers later, was on vacation at waneta lake. we had rented a small, stinky cottage for the first time. this was in the summer of, i think, 2005. i had a weird dream of myself swimming in a lake surrounded by mountains. a boy popped out of the water with thick, wavy hair and water-reddened eyes and flashed the 'west side' gang sign. i think i told people the next day about it but they dismissed it quickly, i was only 11 at the time and obliviously nobody took anything i said seriously. i thought it was weird that i was swimming in a lake surrounded by mountains, there were none where i lived in new york. and i also thought it stange when the boy flashed the west side sign. ive lived on the east coast almost my entire life. about a year later i got the news that my dad lost his job at kodak in rochester, NY and we were moving to boise, idaho. thats a move of about 2000 miles. i was in shock for months up until the move. we moved in early july of 2007. on vacation in idaho we decided to visit cousins we have never met before in montana. we visited mountains and mountain lakes and such. it was a great experience. we visited a man made lake for a picnic toward the end of our stay there. the lake was surrounded by green mountains. my brother, much older now and minus the braces he had two years earlier, flashed the west side sign when he popped out of the water. i was majorly confused for weeks after. i knew i tried telling people before, but nobody listened. a few weeks before i moved, in around mid june of 2007, i had a series of odd dreams. one was of me walking down a hallway lined with small, blue lockers. another was when i walked into a large room with no door and multiple dry erase boards. i saw an elderly man with a large nose teaching a class. in another dream, i walked into a very large room which appeared to be a gym. kids were sitting in the bleachers and chatting. there was a huge yellow moon paitned on a wall on the far side of the gym, with an oddly shaped figure in the middle. it looked to be a man in armour riding on a horse, like he was going to joust. a few days before i started school in idaho i got to visit my new school and get a look around. the hallways had small, blue lockers. there was a large sign on the side of the school proclaiming that they were the lowell-scott chargers, their logo was a man riding on horseback. there was a huge mural of their macot in the gym over a yellow full-moon. i visited my soon to be science room, a large room with many dry erase boards and no door. on the first day i realized the old man with the big nose was my science teacher, mr. battisti. i didnt tell anyone after i had the weird dreams of my new school beause i was certain nobody would listen. so thats my story. ive been having weird, future predicting dreams on and off ever since i was a little kid. i never tell anybody because people im just some going through a new age, pagan hippie fad. the only reason im agnostic and not athiest is because i have no idea why i have dreams like this. i think there will always be a small hint of doubt in my mind when i say there is no god. what do you think of my story? am i a nut or what? Resolved Question: Grammar Check please? (It's not to long...)?
Native American Group Name: Shoshone Indians (Also known as the Snake Nation) Culture: In the culture of the Shoshone Indians, all Shoshone men and women must cut their hair at the neck in a show of mourning. The Shoshone Indians have a rich culture to teach their children the history, language, and values of their ancestors. Every two years, the Shoshone Indians elected a new leader for the tribe. The Shoshones also hold cultural ceremonies, very similar to dances. . Clothing: It was a culture that Shoshone clothing changed with the seasons, ranging from a simple a Breechcloth held on by a belt fastened around the waist for the men and aprons for the women to rabbit fur pants and jackets, and larger animal hides used as capes and coverings. The Shoshone indians wore clothing made of deer hides, and in very cold weather they wore robes made of buffalo. Language: The Shoshonians spoke a language today called, Shoshoni. It is a Uto-Aztecan language of the western plateau. Shoshone is spoken across such a broad geographical region that it forms a 'dialect chain'--speakers of one Shoshone dialect can always understand the dialects of their neighbors, but not necessarily a more distant dialect. Taken together there are more than a thousand speakers of Shoshone dialects, which are still being learned by children today. Art: Shoshone beadwork is well known on the contemporary powwow circuit, but the talents of numerous Shoshone artisans also includes basketry, games and toys, tools and weapons, hide paintings, and parfleche envelopes. As in all cultures, their art reflected their environment and the contacts they had with other cultures. Thus, art forms, materials, colors, patterns, etc., all changed and developed over time. Food: The Shoshone diet included groundhog, jack rabbit, and other small mammals. Sometimes they had bird eggs. They used over 100 different types of seeds and plants. After the Shoshone got horses, they began hunting large game, such as deer, antelope, mountain sheep and bears. Because of horses they could go further to dig camas and other roots. The Shoshone-Bannock almost hunted the southeastern-Idaho bison to the point of extinction. When they ran out of bison in Idaho, they went to Wyoming and Montana to hunt bison. The Shoshone hunted mostly in the spring and the summer. Women gathered berries, roots, nuts, seeds, and insects. The men hunted for deer, squirrels, antelope, rabbits and water birds. When they hunted antelope and rabbits, they would surround the animals and herd them into nets to kill them. The Shoshone used snares and spring-pole traps, and pitfalls to trap animals. They used wooden and horn-bow and arrows to kill larger animals. Their arrows were made of obsidian. Religion: The basis of the Shoshone religion was a belief in dreams, visions, and a Creator; and fostered individual self-reliance, courage, and the wisdom to meet life's problems in a difficult environment. Most of the Shoshone ceremonies are dances similar to the Great Basin Round Dances. The Bannocks shared the warfare practices of the Plains Indians, which included counting coups and taking scalps of enemies. They adopted the Scalp Dance from the plains tribes and during the reservation period began dancing the Sun Dance. Today the Sun Dance, a very important event especially to the Shoshone tribes of today, is held each summer. Terrain: The Shoshone occupied what is today know as the states of California, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming, although most of them seemed to be settled in the Snake river area in Idaho. Historical documents from the Lewis & Clark expedition often refer to the Shoshone as the "Snake Indians"; the actual name "Shoshone" means "The Valley People" . The name means ?inland?, or "in the valley". The terrain varied, but it went from high snow covered mountains in the northern Rockies, up to the flat land and valleys, where herds of buffalo's awaited their extinction. It was typically rainy, making the soil more fertile, but still, flat. (more...)

Resolved Question: Does anyone else Think Palin is an incompetent - selected solely for political purposes and attention?!?!?
Look this lady was the mayor of just 7000 people...Does that not bother anyone. Ran against a nobofy to become Governor of the "Great" state of Alaska (O yeah they're known for their great national leaders).. and has spent only 2 years there...Plus we're hearing stories of her wanting to ban books from libraries, get former family members fired and the fact she doesn't have a passport and never travelled overseas.. .How do you rely on someone like this, if say the likely event McCain keels over in 3 years and this womans in charge...I mean she can deliver a good speech to 'hockey' moms in Alaska but I doubt she would hold her own in talks with Ahmadinejad...This woman has no education ( Idaho - you gotta be kiddin, what no scholarship to Ivy league??) and definetly is limited in terms of foreign policy..I doubt she could name the members of the EU - being busy being a hockey mom and all that.. C'mon USA don't just fall for the "Im your real candidate" gig...You don't necessarily want your average Joe or Josephine in the White House - it just doesn't work out usually..Prime Example: the incumbent..he was marketed as the real down to earth American compared to Gore..Well look at how Good Down 2 Earth Americans do in office..Not too good huh?? Resolved Question: Looking for a small town to live in...?
I'm looking for a small town (under 10,000) for a small family. The only comparison i have is to a fictional town: Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls (silly, i know, but i wanted to give a visual). A small, close knit town that has events year round, charming stores, but is close to a big city for shopping and colleges. I own a business, so a place open to a cute clothing store would be ideal. I am looking for one in the west, I found tons of cute little towns in Vermont, Maine, etc, but I was thinking California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho, Nevada (but we're not too big on the heat thing... we live in a city with 100-110 degree summers as it is). We currently live in California and i didn't want to move too far away from family. Plus, i'm not big on tornadoes, hurricanes, that kind of thing. I would love that picturesque small town though, where my husband and i could raise a family. Anyone have any ideas of cute towns like Stars Hollow? Thanks in advance. (more...)

But feel free to add your own thoughts and comments. You can find your representative's name and address using the links provided in step 2. Dear Senator last name here, Or Dear Representative last name here, The United States spends more money protecting Middle East oil and fighting terrorism than it would cost to develop new energy technology that would obsolete oil as a source of energy. The connection between terrorism and Middle East oil wealth can no longer be ignored. It is time for America to lead the development of new energy technology that would end the need for oil as a source of energy. Freeing America, and all other industrial countries, from the need to use fossil oil as a source of energy will cut-off the flow of oil money to the Middle East and put an end to the financial support of militant Islam. With the help of new technology, America?s energy needs can be obtained from sources other than fossil oil. American technology has put a man on the moon, mapped the human genome, and successfully landed robotic exploration vehicles on Mars. It seems reasonable to believe that American scientists and engineers could also develop environmentally safe alternative energy technology to free America from dependence on fossil oil. The United States has over 270 billion tons of proven coal reserves, having the energy equivalent of four times the oil reserves of Saudi Arabia and equal to all of the proven oil reserves in the world. If the United States could use its coal reserves without destroying the environment, foreign oil would not be needed. Nuclear energy can produce the hydrogen and provide the intense heat needed to make synthetic oil from coal. Nuclear power is a proven emission-free energy source that can replace gas and coal fired base-load electric power generation plants, and enable the USA to develop a replacement for our oil based transportation fuel. The replacement of coal power plants with nuclear power plants would reduce America?s atmospheric CO2 emissions by 30%. The USA does not need to wait for a hydrogen economy; nuclear power can begin to give America energy independence now, by providing the process heat and hydrogen needed for the manufacture of synthetic oil from coal. If nuclear heat and nuclear hydrogen are used in the manufacture of synthetic oil from coal, then the yield of oil from coal would be much higher than if coal was used to provide the needed hydrogen and process heat. Using synthetic gasoline and diesel made from coal, to provide transportation fuel, would not reduce CO2 produced by cars and trucks on the nation's highways, nor would it increase atmospheric CO2 because it would merely replace existing consumption of gasoline and diesel. However, it is possible to have zero emission gasoline/diesel cars and trucks. If technology is used to remove the CO2 tailpipe emissions directly from the atmosphere after the CO2 is released from the tailpipe. In other words, allow cars and trucks to release CO2 and then clean the atmosphere using technology designed to remove CO2 from the air. The collected CO2 can either be recycled or sequestered. If coal power plants were replaced by nuclear power plants, for base-load electricity, and coal is used to make synthetic gasoline and diesel, then Americans who are dependent on the coal mining industry for their incomes would support nuclear energy. Modern Coal-to-oil technology can free America from dependence on Middle East oil. One billion tons of coal per year, at 3 barrels of oil per ton, would replace 65% of USA imported oil, and provide jobs for people who depend on the coal industry. At 12 million imported barrels per day, 65% is 7,800,000 barrels per day. Just over 20% of oil imported into the USA today comes from Persian Gulf Nations, which are also members of OPEC. Less than 45% of oil imported into the USA today comes from OPEC. Drilling for new petroleum might help in the short term, but in the long term natural petroleum is not sustainable ? we cannot depend upon crude oil for our energy future. However, the development of technology for the production of synthetic petroleum will create a sustainable energy future. Synthetic hydrocarbon fuels such as synthetic diesel and synthetic gasoline can be made from many different sources of raw material, including renewable biomass. America has an abundance of natural raw materials that can be used to make synthetic petroleum. A large-scale public investment in Gas-To-Liquids (GTL) technology would bring the cost of the technology down so that the manufacture of synthetic petroleum would be competitive with fossil oil production. The current interest in Gas-To-Liquids technology is focused on monetizing otherwise worthless remote natural gas deposits. However, variations on the same technology can be used to make synthetic petroleum from synthesis gas derived from coal, oil sands, oil shale, biomass, or even recycled CO2 in combination with hydrogen extracted from water. Synthetic gasoline and synthetic diesel made from synthetic petroleum can power existing cars and trucks without needing to modify the engines or national fuel distribution infrastructure. Resolved Question: Is this news article related to illegals? Idaho student says teacher tossed his Mexican flag in trash?
Idaho student says teacher tossed his Mexican flag in trash http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080507/ap_on_re_us/flag_incident;_ylt=ArAdq0MuGcrxgTh0WvzfpPus0NUE TWIN FALLS, Idaho - A high school student says he may file a lawsuit against a physical education teacher who took a Mexican flag he had brought for Cinco de Mayo and put it in the garbage. ADVERTISEMENT click here Clint Straatman denies Froylan Camelo's version of events but said he took the flag Monday because "white kids" might have hurt the 16-year-old. He said he put it in a garbage can because he had no place else to keep it. Camelo said he was changing into gym clothes at Minico High School in Rupert when Straatman told him, "Give me the flag." "I said, 'What's the problem?'" Camelo, speaking in Spanish, told The Times-News of Twin Falls. "He said, 'The problem is that we are in the United States and not in Mexico.' He grabbed it from me. He threw the flag in the garbage can." Camelo said that Straatman told him the flag would be returned at the end of the school day, but that Straatman taunted him instead. "I asked, 'Where is my flag?'" Camelo said. "He said, 'What, the U.S. flag?' I said, 'No, the one for Mexico.' But he wouldn't give it to me." Camelo said he then took the undamaged flag out of the garbage. He said he's been contacted by the American Civil Liberties Union and is considering a lawsuit against Straatman. Camelo and others brought Mexican flags to the south-central Idaho school to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, the May 5 recognition of Mexico's victory over the French army on that day in 1862. About a third of the student body is Hispanic. Straatman denied saying the words Camelo attributed to him, and said the student may have misunderstood him because of his poor English skills. He said he took the flag from Camelo after Camelo had been waving it in the school gym, and denied withholding it later. "I had to confiscate it so it wouldn't escalate any problems in class," Straatman told The Times-News. "We're worried about that stuff all the time. We always have kids saying stuff to each other, and we have a lot of fights between kids." Scott Rogers, superintendent of the Minidoka County Joint School District, said an investigation has been started. He said he could not comment specifically about personnel decisions. "We believe in nondiscriminatory practices and cultural sensitivity," he said. "We train for that and talk about that. If there is a teacher making derogatory comments we don't approve of that. We also don't approve of a student disrupting the classroom." Rogers said he was at the school early Wednesday and that the school was quiet. He said he noticed a few students wearing clothing in the colors of the Mexican flag ? red, white and green ? in protest of Monday's incident. (more...)
