Open Question: Is spending $235,000 to remodel a government office bathroom a good use of taxpayer dollars?
The Washington Post has a report today about outgoing Interior Secretary andformer Idaho Gov. and Senator Dirk Kempthorne spending about $235K to renovate his office bathroom.
[snip]
Seems Kempthorne spent about $235,000 in taxpayer funds renovating the bathroom a few months ago, which included installing a new shower, a refrigerator and a freezer and buying monogrammed towels, department officials told our colleague Derek Kravitz.
[snip]
But department officials say much of the money was spent on lavish wood paneling and tile. Among the choice items found in the new bathroom: wainscot wood panels extending from floor to ceiling and cabinet doors revealing a working refrigerator and freezer.

Or at waste?

Resolved Question: can someone please proof-read my culmination project?
It takes as little as an ampere to kill someone; however, electricians are often surrounded by up to 200 amperes daily. The job of electricians became important around 1881, when there was a big enough interest in lighting the streets such. Electricians have one of the most important jobs of all. They make sure that people have power, and that things that run off electricity are always working. Having no electricity can cost companies thousands of dollars. In hospitals when the electricity goes out, people's lives are at stake. Almost all electricians go through an apprenticeship, or on the job training. They will always be needed, because nothing can replace the work done by people inside homes and businesses. Electricians are responsible for installing, repairing and maintaining various types of electrical systems and structures.
Even though electricity was discovered in the early 1700's, there was no such thing as an electrician until 1881. "Edison and other electrical inventors showed off their inventions at world fairs. Electricians were hired to operate the electrical parts at the expositions" (wois.org). Today, they mainly do the same thing. Except that it is not just in expositions. Now they repair and install electric systems in people's houses, in large factories, outside telephone wires, and skyscrapers. Electricians were the ones that made our daily lives as easy as they are now.
An electricians work is not all cookie - cutter. It requires some amount of skill that cannot be taught in a classroom. "Less than 5% of all Washington state electricians have a bachelors degree or higher" (wois.org). Most of the electricians go through an apprenticeship program, following a two year professional - technical school. Then they attend a four year on-the-job apprenticeship. They may also be trained through the military. Training lasts for 25 weeks depending on their specialty. To become apprentice, they must have a high school diploma or GED. They must also have a college level algebra class with a "C" or better. To become professionally licensed, they must get a high score on an electrical trade's aptitude exam. They must also have 8000 hours under direct supervision of a journeyman - level electrician. 4000 of the hours must be industrial or commercial work. They may also obtain a license by equivalent verified training in the military if they pass the licensing test.
Almost all of the fields in the service industry cannot be done by a robot. The electrical field is one of them. Half of becoming an electrician is knowledge, the other half consists of skills, abilities, and physical demands. Some of the demands vary from simple things like using their fingers to assemble small objects, to being physically active for long periods of time. Different types of abilities they need range from multitasking to judging cost, to having quick and accurate math skills. Being an electrician, there is not a lot of grueling, backbreaking work. It is mostly just wires and electrical components. It is usually a 40 hour a week schedule. Also there are many opportunities for overtime and on-call work. The national median yearly salary for electricians for $44,780. The benefits they receive vary by who they are hired for. Many jobs are found by electrical contractors, self employed, temporary worker agencies, and automobile manufacturers. "In addition to jobs created by the increased demand for electrical work, many openings are expected over the next decade as a large number of electricians retire" (bls.gov). There will be very many job opportunities for new electricians. The ones who have already been in the field will most likely take the place of the older, more expirienced workers who retire which will leave the entry openings available. A more exact statistic from wois (The Washington State Career Information System) states that; "Between 2006 and 2016, the number of new jobs to open up in this occupation in Washington State is expected to increase by 14.8%. It is estimated that 259 openings annually will be due to new positions, and 481 openings annually will be from workers leaving this occupation" (wois.org). So there should not be any problem for new workers to find a job when there are 740 jobs per year just in Washington State. Electricians are needed in every state, continent, and country. There would be many opportunities for moving to another place if the electrician wanted to travel.
The person who I decided to be my live source for my culminating project was Seth Cooper. When Seth first started becoming an electrician he went to school for three hours a night, two days a week in Boise, Idaho. The rest of the time he was an apprentice working at a hospital making 50 percent of that of a journeyman electrician at the time, which was $12.25 an hour. The good part was that his schooling was paid for. He has been a journeyman electrician for five years now. He is hired by the Oregon Electric Group an

Resolved Question: Polls show McCain will lose his senate seat to Napolitano in 2010. How long till Palin's career ends?
Assuming Obama Wins (based on current polling)....
Based on Polling data by the Arizona Republic (biggest AZ newspaper) Gov. Napolitano is set to take McCain's seat in 2010 with an 11 point lead. I live in AZ, and I can tell you Napolitano is MUCH MUCH more popular than McCain, which is amazing considering AZ is traditionally a red state. McCain's career will be over.
Anyone know the status on Palin's post-governor career plans? She going to pursue her career in sport's reporting? Go back to college to get a Master's or PhD or a more applicable Bachelor's degree than Communications from U of Idaho? Anyone?

Resolved Question: Is our nation being put at risk by the possibility of Gov. Palin having to take over the Presidency?
Here are her bona fides:
Bachelor's in journalism from University of Idaho
4 years Wasilla City Council
6 years Wasilla mayor
1 year "Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission"
20 months governor of a state with 660,000 people
I understand a lot of you believe that her credentials are equal to Obama's. Let's examine that, here are his bona fides:
B.A. political science Columbia University, specialization in international relations
J.D. in Law from Harvard, magna c um laude
President, Harvard Law Review
7 years Illinois State Senator
4 years U.S. Senator
Obama has been deeply schooled in foreign issues and national issues since he entered the U.S. Senate. Palin has not, at all.
Why are her lack of relevant political credentials not something that worries Republicans? I am mystified as to why it doesn't concern them, when Gov. Palin clearly is not prepared for extreme situations that may occur as Fate allows.
CAN YOU PLEASE ANSWER THIS SEROUS QUESTION WITHOUT HITTING THE ABUSE BUTTON JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE IT? THAT WOULD BE WONDERFUL IF WE COULD MANAGE TO HONOR EVERYONE'S FREE SPEECH.
Linda:
Your generalizations are useless. Who cares about executive experience when it's at a minimum and she knows NOTHING about national and foreign affairs? You guys keep saying she's over the National Guard like that is something special. ALL governors are commanders in chief over their National Guard. I've yet to hear one reason why this should even be mentioned as something special. Did she do something noteworthy regarding the National Guard? Unless she did, it's just stupid to mention it like it's something special.
roadhazz:
Making snide, and I'm sure you think clever, remarks about lawyers and stuffed shirts doesn't change a thing about Sarah Palin. She's completely and totally unprepared to lead this country if necessary. Just the fact that you couldn't even defend her, just downgrade Obama, tells us all we need to know. At least Obama has had experience on a national level in legislation and has been deeply schooled for the last three years on foreign policy. Are you really going to pretend that means nothing at all? Pathetic.
Kim:
you are completely full of b.s. and just repeating talking points that make no sense. So what if she has executive experience? So does my Aunt Polly, but she isn't fit either for the job of VP. She does NOT have more political experience than Obama. Unless you cannot read then you must be deliberately blind to their political accomplishments and involvements. Stop sticking your head in the sand and listening to talking points from pundits. Look at the reality of it. She isn't any more prepared to be VP than my cat.
Sassy:
What a load of bull dung. Please stop pretending that all Obama did as state senator/u.s. senator was name post offices and holidays. As far as ACORN, at least Obama himself is not under investigation as Palin is. I can't believe you even brought that up considering the fact that she is under investigation for her OWN actions. Obama didn't get into college under affirmative action. He was intelligent enough to earn a scholarship. Not like Sarah, who went to 4 different schools before ending up with a journalism degree.
He has never admitted to being a Muslim because HE ISN'T ONE. lol you people are something else
You know very well he was referring to the 57 primaries which including territories of the U.S., but keep pretending if it floats your boat.
It's actually disturbing that people like yourself make something out of nothing when it comes to Sarah Palin and nothing out of something when it comes to Obama. Ridiculous
GO HILLARY:
If you can look at Sarah Palin, her empty politically irrelevant resume, and her stand on the issues - of which she is diametrically opposed to everything Hillary stands for - and choose her over Obama because of some vague problem with Obama's aloofness? Then we have just parted ways. Honestly, after seeing you in here for 2 years and respecting you deeply, I am appalled that it seems you are willing to ignore that Palin is laughably unsuitable to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency just because you don't happen to like Obama and obviously are still in a fit of pique over Hillary.
Vote against your own interests, and against everything Hillary stood for if you have to. I refuse to cut off my nose to spite my face and put my country in jeopardy should this know nothing have to take over for McCain.
Seriously. I am beyond disappointed in you "Go Hillary"

Resolved Question: Palin issue with community service?
Next time Gov.Palin attacks Sen. Obama on wanting to be US President on the experience of having been a community organizer, remind her that her team of a rookie naval aviator(who became a POW in 1967-1973) and MISS WASILLA(1984) is not a very impressive record either. But may be we can add that after Idaho University she became a sports Writer and a KTUU-TV anchor Alaska.
For which of these records is she and McCain running for POTUS and VeeP?
Since she is bent on ignoring Obama's service as a civil rights lawyer, law professor and Illinois State Senator, I'd argue that a community organizer is much more in touch with PEOPLE or THE COMMUNITY for which they all claim to be fighting for.
Either McCain and Gov. are running on their Senate( and Oops being a Maverick!), and State governorship experience respectively, or a rookie naval aviator(and a POW) and Sports Writer(Miss Wasilla; runner-up Miss Alaska), because these are what they were straight from college.
Now that the shoe is on the other foot, we can all see clearly that it was not about issues, but destroying Sen. Obama's impressive record which threatens the eight year-old GOP hold on power. Why is it a problem serving you community that what you are suppose to do when you become president that s your job

There you have it folks! Happy voting.
I had forgot to mention that Palin's mayor and governer positions are part-time legislative positions.
Jan- I only brought it up because of the republican argument that Palin is more experienced than Obama. I agree the comparison should be made between McCain and Obama, not Obama and Palin. I'm simply debunking the myths that are coming from your party.
Thanks for contributing.
Jan- also she wasnt mayor for 10 years- she was mayor for 6 years...part time.
You might want to check up on your facts.
Jan- also, her experience as a mayor was for a city with a population of 6700 people. There are more children in a single chicago public school district than in the whole town that she governed. School superintendents have to balance budgets and enforce rules as well. Does a chicago school superintendent, with the same responsibilities as a mayor of alaska, then qualify to be vice president since he also handles a larger population?
