Danger in disguise: candy-flavor drugs
Strawberry meth hasn't hit locally in a big way, but police are on lookout
What if someone had the brilliant notion to make "the world's most dangerous drug" sweet tasting by adding candy flavors and making it look like Pop Rocks? Well, someone did and it might be catching on. As a father of a fifth grader, I was naturally concerned when I heard about the newest form of methamphetamine, known as "candy-meth." An e-mail has been circulating on the Web, alleging that candy-flavored meth is being passed out to kids at elementary schools. To verify evidence to support the claims in the e-mail go to Snopes.com .
(see link http://www.snopes.com/horrors/drugs/candymeth.asp),
Candy meth is a potential threat to anyone tricked into thinking that it?s not harmful.
Parents need to be informed on what kind of drugs are out there. Furthermore, parents need to talk to their children about the present dangers of drugs.
Here are the basic facts that exist regarding candy-flavored meth:
- candy meth is most commonly flavored with strawberry and is known on the street as "Strawberry Quick."
- other flavors may include chocolate, peanut butter, cola, cherry, grape, and orange
- tell your children to never accept candy from strangers, or even friends if received from someone else
-meth is especially dangerous for kids, with symptoms of anxiety, paranoia, and increased heart rate
I am sure we can expect it in the future as trends tend to move through the larger cities," said Deputy Chief Julian Bernal, head of Dallas' narcotics division.
The Drug Enforcement Administration's Dallas office has not encountered the drug, but local agents are on the lookout, said spokeswoman Terri K. Wyatt.
"These are evil drug dealers who are marketing to kids," Special Agent Wyatt said.
Local bust
At 2 a.m. Tuesday, a Lake Worth officer spotted a man sleeping inside a Pontiac Firebird parked at a Sonic restaurant on State Highway 199. When police searched Ronnie N. Smith's car, they found more than 400 grams of strawberry meth in two large plastic bags, in addition to various prescription drugs, several stolen credit cards and driver's licenses and about $1,800 in cash.
The pink crystals in the large bags tested positive for meth, said Lake Worth police Capt. Dave Tatsak. While officers weren't inclined to give the stuff a taste test ? doing so would be illegal ? it "definitely smelled like strawberry," he said.
Mr. Smith, 45, of Jacksboro, was arrested on drug possession charges and was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. He requested an attorney and refused to talk to investigators, leaving them with no idea where he got the Strawberry Quick or what his intentions with it were.
On April 11, a Fort Worth police officer found the drug during a traffic stop. About 5 p.m., the officer pulled over a Ford Explorer on a traffic violation in the 2300 block of Ridgmar Plaza and found a 20-year-old man in possession of some prescription Tylenol for which he had no prescription.
On the way to jail, the officer saw that the man was squirming, and once at the jail, the officer looked under the back seat and found a cigarette wrapper. It contained about a gram of "pink-colored, crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamines," also known as Strawberry Quick, the officer wrote in the report.
"Depending on what the manufacturers use to cut the meth down, it can have various coloration, including pink," said Lt. Dean Sullivan, a Fort Worth police spokesman. "But our officers watch the TV news, too, so the catch phrase 'Strawberry Quick' did appear in at least one report."
He said he knew of no other accounts of the drug in Fort Worth.
About a dozen other local police agencies contacted said they had not come across the drug.
Growing concern
Concern over strawberry meth spiked nationally in February, when the Nevada Department of Public Safety's special investigations unit issued a police bulletin alerting law enforcement colleagues that the Carson City Sheriff's Department had seized some of the substance in late January.
The bulletin noted that the drug first turned up in Sacramento, Calif., where dealers were cooking meth with strawberry-flavored drink mix to cut down on the drug's bitter taste when snorted.
"If meth is cut with something after it is cooked, it loses its potency," said Special Agent Wyatt in Dallas. "With this, it's cooked into it. It's not diluted. It retains its potency."
Arkansas police also have reported finding strawberry meth, and the DEA in Washington, D.C., reports that a similar pinkish-red crystalline drug has turned up in Washington state, Idaho, New Mexico, Missouri and Minnesota.
Two weeks ago, the rise in reports prompted Se

Resolved Question: Would you support a national plebiscite on Evolution and Intelligent Design?
I am in the process of devising my own "citizen's initiative" which will allow the American people ,as opposed to atheist fascists, to decide what their children should be learning in school.
The choices are:
1) Evolution theory taught with no ID.
2) Evolution theory taught along with ID.
3) ID taught and Evolution treated as a hoax.
4) Neither taught.
I am hoping that the American people will choose the third option but will accept the democratic will no matter what they decide.
I need a quorum to get my initiative started in the state I live in....I am hoping it will spread nationally. If you live in Idaho, can you email me your support?

Resolved Question: How's Obama's "50 State Strategy" working against McCains "Sarah Surge"?
The Alaska governor was good news for the GOP whether it was money for her party nationally (61% of Republicans More Likely to Give Thanks to Palin) or the Alaska Senate race where indicted Senator Ted Stevens is back within two points of his opponent.
After all, Palin is viewed favorably by 72% of voters in her home state, including 56% who hold a Very Favorable opinion of her. Nationally, the woman who was barely known two weeks ago is now viewed favorably by 56% of voters, including 41% with a Very Favorable opinion.
For McCain, states like Montana and North Dakota where he was tied with Obama a few weeks ago are now solidly in his camp, as are more predictable red states like Idaho, Wyoming and Oklahoma.
McCain edged ahead in New Mexico, where he has trailed all year, and traditionally Democratic Washington has shown a strong surge for McCain since he added Palin to the ticket.
The Republican also grew his lead in Ohio, the state that the 2004 presidential election hinged on and one especially targeted by Democrats this election year.
Obama held on in the key state of Pennsylvania, but his lead is just two percentage points.

Resolved Question: Obama has a problem with white voters?
This does not seem to be reflected nationally.
Iowa
North Dakota
Kansas
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Idaho
Oregon
Nebraska
Maine
Washington
Wyoming
Colorado
Alaska
Utah
Are all very white states. Obama won most of them by huge numbers.
It seems like Obama has only struggled with white voters in Appalachia and the deep south. Logic would suggest that there might be other factors that makes both of those regions respond differently to Obama than the rest of America.
I think the national media is trying too hard to not call it what it is and in that they are doing a disservice to their audiences. The media should seek the truth.
How can Obama have a "problem with white voters" when he has won the white vote definitively in so many states? It seems overstated, don't you agree?
Some Chick -- didn't he win Oregon after the Wright story?
?Hoping~4~Hillary? -- actually it does. If he had a problem with white voters he's have lost all of the above listed states.
Queen of Wands -- LoL! No, I don't. The premise the media is feeding us is that since WV voted for good ol' boy Bill Clinton, it is devastating for Obama's chances to lose big in that most Appalachian of states.
I think that is the most bizarre logic in the world.
Prior to the election if you had asked me which state with 5 electoral votes is more likely to vote for a charismatic black candidate --- Nevada or WV, I'd say Nevada.
Now I am being constantly fed the idea that Nevada is a red state and therefore "unwinnable" and only a proven swing state like WV can get Obama elected...
By refusing to publically state why Obama lost those states (trying not to lose advertisers), the media has played a part in creating IMO an overstated arguement.
It just seems very unbelieveable.
akanni23 - I participated in the Texas Caucus and I saw no intimidation or cheating by any Obama reps. Now I have heard charges of cheating levelled against both sides in a number of states (Hillary in NH was apparently quite a dustup), but like you, I have not personally seen anything. My precinct chair --- an admitted Hillary fan --- miscounted time and time again, but I wasn't out here calling it "attempts to cheat", she was a nice lady, but a bit of a burnout and simply quite stressed out. Eventually we got the right count that added up to the number of people participating. I think you have to realize that people who call cheating are often not the brightest bulbs and allow for honest and fair investigations to see if there is any merit to those charges.
I think the most telling thing about those states you mention is that Obama is polling ahead of McCain head to head in a number of those tradionally red states. That would not be occurring if as you suggest
people in those states beleived he had cheated to win those states.

Resolved Question: legal rules pertaining to photographing headstones?
I volunteer, taking pictures of cemetery headstones for people who live out of state for genealogical research, which I do free of charge. I was advised recently by a cemetery sexton to have the family requesting the photos to send him a notarized letter granting me permission to take the pictures. What, if any, rules exist pertaining to this subject nationally as well as in my state of Idaho. I appreciate your help.
