In the center of the rural boomtown of Soda Springs, Idaho, stands the historic Enders Hotel, Café, and Bar, a three-story brick building that has been many things to many people. But to one family who bought it as an attempt to renew themselves it was home, a place they desperately tried to hold on to and yet, after seventeen years of living there, the very place from which they wanted to escape. Growing up under its leaking roof, Brandon R. Schrand watched a cast of broken characters pass through the hotel doors—an alcoholic artist, a forgotten boxing champ, an ex-con, a homeless family—and tried to find his own identity among those revolving faces. Haunted by a father he had never seen, he tested the faces of those drifters for familiarity. Winner of the River Teeth Literary Nonfiction Prize, The Enders Hotel reveals the promises and warnings of western boomtown life—stories of alcoholism, murder, betrayal, hope, and finally, redemption.

In The Wilderness
In the mid-1960s, as mechanization and the forests' depletion drove many loggers into the cities,Kim Barnes's parents turned to fundamentalism to sustain their increasingly difficult life. The author struggled to live by this religion's exacting tenets, but her chilling descriptions of the harsh punishments meted out for lapses make us understand why she ultimately had to leave it behind. Yet she conveys understanding and love for the rigid yet secure world of her youth in this haunting memoir of faith and loss in the Idaho woods.

Resolved Question: Application essay help?
I'm going to stuyd abroad next year and this is what I have so far for my application but I can't help but think it is horribly lame and just really a bad essay. WHAT SHOULD I WRITE?? Be honest. what should I do to fix this terrible esay.
Ask any twenty-something year old girl what her favorite movie was as a child and while the titles may vary the main themes do not. Movies such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and The Little Mermaid would be named. All of which involve damsels in distress that are rescued and swept off their feet by a handsome prince and they live happily ever after, the end. I believe I am one of the few girls that would not name any of these cliché tales of love at first sight. While I was entertained, and enjoyed these stories (I am still a girl) they are not what I would watch over and over until almost every word and song was memorized. Peter Pan was my tale of choice. There was adventure and excitement, a new place they had never been to, with people they did not know, I couldn?t get enough of it. I never noticed the significance of this until very recently, it actually shows much about my personality.
My life has never been about waiting for that perfect someone to come ?rescue me? or just getting through to the next day. I have always wanted to see new sights, think from different perspectives, and experience something I hadn?t before. The only problem with this would be I do not feel I have done any of it. Before relocating to Cheney last year, I had lived in the same small western Washington town for more than half of my life. My travels that extend past the west coast consist of an accidental hour trip to Idaho last year and spending a day in Vancouver, B.C. as a sixth grade field trip. To someone like myself that is just not enough.
This thirst for knowledge and new experiences that I posses I believe I inherited from my father. Now a fifty-one year old high school special education teacher my father spent his twenties riding his bike across the country, working at youth camps and a ski resort, and of course going to college. So it came as no surprise to me, or my mother and three brothers, when about four years ago my father had a new plan to move to Australia in a teacher exchange. This turned me onto the idea of going to school away from home, away from Washington and the United States. While my father?s plans to move to a foreign country never really played out, I never let go of the idea. I have always known that it was something I had to experience. So this last summer when my mother was trying to help me decide on a major International Affairs made so much sense to me.

Resolved Question: My boyfriend is moving away... to Idaho... and ... I don't want to let him go?
Well he isn't exactly my boyfriend but for sake of explanation we'll call him my boyfriend. I just found out he's moving to Idaho. He's one of my best friends. I used to feel like I was flying whenever I was with him and now whenever I even think of him I feel like I'm drowning. He literally is the air I breathe. I can't stand the thought of not seeing him. It kills me. I already spent most of last night up crying and listening to depressing songs.
I think what kills me the most about it is number 1 that he didn't have the guts to tell me himself. I have to find out through our other friends. Over this past week he's been trying to avoid me. Not calling me as much, not sitting by me at lunch or youth group, not opening up as much. At first I wondered what the heck, but now I realize it was probably because knew he was leaving and he couldn't bear to say goodbye.
And number 2 that since he'll be leaving Saturday I won't get to say goodbye to him because I found out he was leaving after I saw him last.
I can't bear it. I don't even know what the right way to feel is. What am I supposed to do?

Resolved Question: What does one with a sister like this ? She graduated from a "halfway" house this week?
I have younger sister who just graduated from a "halfway" house type program here in Idaho this week. Ever since her arrival back home all I ever see is her playing online video games( a big no no on my father's laptop as she's already destroyed other computers before in my family). Either that or she looking up stuff over at my space.Another big no no
Since she's graduated from high school, wouldn't all of this time be spent looking for a job or college or both? After all she's spent a lot of her youth years going back and forth between youth prisons in California and Idaho? Shouldn't she be looking for a job or is she going to scam or com some other poor people instead for money instead?
What does one with a younger sister like this? People who had experience with youths in "halfway" houses, youth counselors, youth police officers etc please answer my questions please. Thank You.

Resolved Question: Can Obama Win in November?
Obama has lost to Clinton almost all of the "swing/purple" states (with the exception of Missouri which was razor tight) that are usually so necessary to a democratic win in Presidential contests -- Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, and California. And, although Obama wasn't on the ballot when an unofficial primary was held in Michigan, supporters of Obama and John Edwards had opportunity to vote "Uncommitted." -- Even so, Hillary Clinton handily won against both candidates combined.
That state along with Fla, will go republican in gen election....
Obama hasnt won one swing state......Obama would lose all of the south and most of the states he has beaten Hillary Clinton during the primaries such as Utah, Nebraska, Idaho, South Dakato and Wyoming. These are traditional "red states" that virtually never go democratic in Presidential elections.
The exit polls tell the story, not only of Clinton's victories, but why Obama can't win in November. According to those polls, Clinton carried 54 percent of voters earning less than $50,000 a year, 62 percent of Democrats who don't have college degrees, 63 percent of voters older than 65, and 66 percent of white women. Clinton won the vote of seven in 10 Catholics, 61 percent of small-town and rural voters, 58 percent of weekly churchgoers, seven in ten Catholics, and 62 percent of gun owners. If Obama is the candidate, he can't count on the voters, and he will lose pennsylvania..The voters told as much to the exit pollsters: only 50 percent of voters who voted for Clinton said they would definitely vote for Obama if he was the Democratic nominee; a third said they would vote for McCain.
what it comes down to is this......
1 Obama is a northern liberal with a far "left of center" voting record from the Illinois State Senate.
2 Obama lacks military and executive (Governorship) experience and was only elected to the United States Senate less than one year before beginning his quest for the US Presidency. (By contrast, Hillary Clinton has 8 years experience in the White House as First Lady and almost two terms as US Senator.)
3 A series of (recently exposed) controversial associations and highly questionable comments from either the candidate himself or his wife have raised doubts regarding Obama's sense of patriotism, understanding or connection to rural America, and love for country -- things that generally don't play well in middle America.
4 A poor performance in the most recent debate between Obama and Clinton revealed a candidate easily irritated and annoyed with uncomfortable questions and offering less than adequate responses to them.
5 tendency to become arrogant or blame either his opponent or the press when things don't go Obama's way.
6 Successful attempts (so far) to block Michigan and Florida votes from being counted or conduct do-over primaries. Unless part of the democratic nominating process, these strategic and important states can be expected to go Republican in the November election.
All of the above spell a candidacy in trouble and a nomination that if allowed to go forward, is doomed to staggering defeat in November.
Exit polls from the most recent primaries show Obama having significant trouble with "White, blue collar and rural voters, Catholics, Jews, Latinos, Seniors and women."
What does that leave?
African Americans, so called, "Latte Liberals," most rock stars and Hollywood elites, affluent, left wing cerebrals and organizations such as "Move-On.org," and the so-called, "youth vote."
The very same groups who enthusiastically backed and watched go down to defeat, John Kerry in the most recent 2004 Presidential election. This despite the fact, Kerry was a former war hero with decades of US Senatorial experience.
It is doubtful that if nominated, Barack Obama would even be able to win the states that John Kerry did.
