Ruby Ridge: The Truth and Tragedy of the Randy Weaver Family
On the last hot day of summer in 1992, gunfire cracked over a rocky knob in northern Idaho, just south of the Canadian border. By the next day three people were dead, and a small war was joined, pitting the full might of federal law enforcement against one well-armed family. Drawing on extensive interviews with Randy Weaver's family, government insiders, and others, Jess Walter traces the paths that led the Weavers to their confrontation with federal agents and led the government to treat a family like a gang of criminals.
This is the story of what happened on Ruby Ridge: the tragic and unlikely series of events that destroyed a family, brought down the number-two man in the FBI, and left in its wake a nation increasingly attuned to the dangers of unchecked federal power.

Idaho Falls: The Untold Story of America's First Nuclear Accident

When asked to name the world's first major nuclear accident, most people cite the Three Mile Island incident or the Chernobyl disaster. Revealed in this book is one of American history's best-kept secrets: the world's first nuclear reactor accident to claim fatalities happened on United States soil. Chronicled here for the first time is the strange tale of SL-1, a military test reactor located in Idaho's Lost River Desert that exploded on the night of January 3, 1961, killing the three-man maintenance crew on duty. Through details uncovered in official documents, firsthand accounts from rescue workers and nuclear industry insiders, and exclusive interviews with the victims' families and friends, this book probes intriguing questions about the devastating blast that have remained unanswered for more than 40 years. From reports of a faulty reactor design and mismanagement of the reactor's facilities to rumors of incompetent personnel and a failed love affair that prompted deliberate sabotage of the plant, these plausible explanations for the explosion raise questions about whether the truth was deliberately suppressed to protect the nuclear energy industry.

Big Trouble: A Murder in a Small Western Town Sets Off a Struggle for the Soul of America

In June 1997, just months before publication of his latest book,
Big Trouble, Pulitzer-winning journalist J. Anthony Lukas killed himself. He was 64 and, according to many accounts, had finally surrendered to a lifelong despair over what he saw as his inability to meet his own exceedingly high literary standards.
Yet in reading Big Trouble, a gripping account of murder and politics in turn-of-the-century Idaho, one can't help but think that Lukas was far too hard on himself. His last work is a well-told tale of the struggle between labor and capitalists in the West at a time when entire state legislatures were effectively owned by corporate interests and America teetered on the brink of open class warfare.
The story begins with the 1905 assassination of Frank Steunenberg, an ex- governor of Idaho. His murder was rumored to be the work of vengeful labor bosses, and Pinkerton detective James McParland tracked Wobbly organizer Big Bill Haywood all the way to Colorado to bring him back to stand trial, where he and two other men were defended by a team of lawyers that included Clarence Darrow.
During the writing of Common Ground, his account of Boston's painful process of school desegregation in the 1970s, Lukas became intrigued by what he called race's "twin issue": class. "The more I delved into Boston's crisis," he writes in the foreword to Big Trouble, "the more I found the conundrums of race and class inextricably intertwined." Class simply wasn't as overt an issue as race in contemporary society. What Lukas needed was a time and place where class and class struggle were open and visible. He found it in Idaho in 1905, a time of change and uncertainty, when any notion of a large American middle class was still a distant dream. In order to make this era comprehensible to modern readers, Lukas has gone great lengths in Big Trouble to re-create the entire social, political, and economic context of the murder trial. Here are the histories not simply of mining, railroads, and unions, but of detectives, "modern" journalism, baseball, land speculation, and frontier-town boosterism. In its capacity to translate historical facts into an engrossing, insightful read, Big Trouble stands as a final testament to Lukas's well-deserved reputation as a top reporter of America's growing pains.

Open Question: Is Dr. Brian Kerr of Boise a good choice for the SmartLipo (Smart Lipo) procedure?
Hi. I didn't get an answer last time, so I'll give it one more shot.
I'm from Boise, Idaho and I saw an ad for SmartLipo (Smart Lipo). My friend from Santa Monica had it done and she looks great. I don't want to go to California to get SmartLipo, so I'm looking for someone local. The ad I came across was for Dr. Brian Kerr of Silk Touch Laser and Medspa. Has anyone heard anything about this doctor? Any good or bad experiences? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Resolved Question: Someone else bought me food with food stamps. Is this legal?
I live in the state of Idaho and my childrens mother recently bought me food with her food stamps.(we are not married and don't live together) I spend currently via court order 75% of my take home income on child support, medical/dental/vision coverage, and 68% of all daycare/medical expenses/etc for two children. As such I have literally no budget for food let alone utilities and rent. However, even though I have petitioned the system many times I get rejected when I apply to food stamps due to my income. The local office refuses to take my costs into consideration. I'm grateful for the food but I dont want to get in legal trouble. I have enough trouble already :(
Thanks in advance

Resolved Question: an opinion on a solution to our economic woes.(from an idealist with out any real knowledge about economy)?
our congress just handed a bail out deal to the auto manufacturer's and also to the real estate magnates who started and perpetuated this whole financial fiasco to begin with.
in the order of billions of tax payer dollars with out any regard to the general populace.
what i mean is how does giving billions of dollars to the auto manufacturer's help sell cars if the citizens cannot buy them how does giving billions of dollars put workers back on assembly line if no one can purchase manufactured goods or products.
if our congress was smart then they would realize that for only a few hundred million dollars rather than 25 billion they could turn our economy around in a few months rather than a few years.
by giving the taxpayer back what is rightfully theirs to begin with.
if our congress gave every registered taxpayer $50,000.00
then almost all of the citizens would be out of debt.
the sales of luxury items would go through the roof and put millions of people back to work. giving most of us a chance at starting over allowing truckers who couldn't repair their vehicles to do so,people who didn't have the money to buy stock's or bonds would.
the turn around would be almost instant, putting money back into states and local economies most importantly it would put people back to work.
i realize some people would say why not a hundred thousand or a million, be cause that kind of money back to the people would lead to absolut chaos with no one going back to work, people trying to control other peoples money ... the court system would be virtually shut down and nothing would get produced.
most americans total debt isnt more than twenty or so thousand dollars, so if our congress bailed the people out with a $50,000.00 stimulus package then most of us would be debt free we would be able to buy and purchase all kinds of products and even be abale to give something to out favored charities and other programs.
the revenue created from sales taxes would put the money back into the national treasury and eeven if we had to pay a small 5 or 6% tax on that kind of stimulus package it would more than aptly jump start our ecomomy.
rather than waiting for fannie may, chrysler, ford or g.m.c. to stategise and reconfigure thier market stategies whilst sipping mai- tais in hawaii.
which is probably exactly whet our senetors and representatives want anyway so that they can get back to having brand new cars donated to thier campaign mangers and free time share in the bahamas!!
thats my take..what do you think ??
by the way i wrote a simular letter to sentor mike crapo of idaho and all i got was a form letter reply.
if you agree with this idealistic view i urge you to e-mail your representative or congressman.

Resolved Question: What is there to do in Idaho (specifically Boise and McCall)?
My friends and I (mid 20s) are taking a snowboarding trip to McCall ID. We'll have a car, so we can drive almost anywhere and I was wondering if anyone had good suggestions of places to see/things to do etc. I've done some research online, but I would rather have a local perspective... Also, where is the best place to get a potatoe?!?

Resolved Question: Why are people in New Orleans still demanding welfare and handouts three years later?
The former governor of Idaho pointed out that if a similar disaster hit Boise, the people wouldn't just whine about it for years on end. They'd pull together and rebuilt. Is that a fair criticism? Is it fair to say that people in New Orleans are more interested in handouts than a hand up?
No offense, but since New Orleans also has America's highest murder rate (by far!), it seems clear that the locals are more interested in shooting each other and collecting welfare than doing hard, honest work and getting things done.
Should America cut this city loose and stop wasting money on it? Sorry to be harsh, but New Orleans has had three years, and has totally wasted them.
http://www.reuters.com/article/domesticNews/idUSTRE4AN7LF20081124
" New Orleans had the highest crime rate of any U.S. city last year, with 209 murders and more than 19,000 reported criminal incidents, CQ Press reported on Monday in an annual ranking."
209 murders in a city of only 300,000? That is indeed by far the highest in America, even higher than cities like Compton or Gary.
That "Alvan H" guy's link goes to an .exe file that my computer flagged as probable virus; I wouldn't go there.

Resolved Question: Is there any abandoned buildings in idaho falls?
Ok here is the thing. I was just kicked out of the house by my parents.
I now need a place to stay. I cant ask my friends because they all live with their parents too. I tried getting into the local homeless shelter but they are to full to take me right now. Currently I am staying in my car.
Is there any abandoned buildings or houses in Idaho Falls that I can stay in till I get on my feet? I already got a job but I wont have enough money to get an apartment for four more weeks.

Resolved Question: A Guy Threatening to Sue Me ....?
About a year and a half ago I sold a business training package to a guy in Pennsylvania. I live in Idaho. Anyway, he has had some local lawyer send me 2 letters threatening to sue me for failure to provide this training, but I clearly have evidence that shows that he received everything he paid for. Anyway, the purchase price was $1500 dollars. Wouldn't he need to sue me in Small Claims Court for this amount?
And in that case, wouldn't he need to come here to Idaho to do so? I mean, he couldn't sue me in a Pennsylvania court since I do not reside there could he? Maybe I'm wrong, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks all.

Resolved Question: Chose any one college football program in America, how would you fix what has gone horribly wrong there?
My choice would be Idaho even though I think their AD is doing a great job overall. He is incrementally building the Kibbe Dome into a 25K bowl. It is tough sledding but he is working hard at it.
On the flip side, I think the scheduling could be a little better and the coach doesn't help. I get that the coach is supposedly a great recruiter, but there appears to be real questions if he can coach. I'd possibly give Robb Akey one more year to hit .500.
I'd want to replace him with a guy who has won in the Idaho region --- someone with a local name who can recruit and has a high powered offense --- UTEP's Mike Price. If I can't get him from UTEP, I'd go hard after his son Erick Price --- UTEP's former very successful offensive co-ordinator and now NFL assistant.
Scheduling, this year the team played @AZ, @San Diego State, hosted Idaho St, W. Mich, OOC. Last year it was @USC, @Wash St., and hosted Cal Poly & N. Ill. the year before it was @Mich St,@Ore. St., @Wash St, and hosted Idaho St.
It seems pretty clear that only FCS schools and the MAC (or MAC level conferences) are jumping to play an OOC game in the Kibbie Dome at it's current capacity and that the the other two games are body bag road games against upper conference FBS schools to generate revenue.
I would try to limit travel distances to allow fans to travel to the road games. Road game 1 would be Wassu every other year and alternating with Washington, Oregon, and Oregon State, until the kibbie dome is big enough to play home and home with Wassu. For road game 2 I'd try to alternate between Utah & BYU. For home game FCS, I'd rotate between Idaho St and Montana. (IMO, it is better to risk Montana running you to keep fans engaged.). For home game FBS, I don't know what more you can do than what the AD is already doing with his MAC strategy.
My two cents. What school would you try?
