The New York Times: The Complete Front Pages: 1851-2008
The New York Times: The Complete Front Pages: 1851-2008 This stunning and cutting-edge package provides access to the world as reflected in its most influential and respected newspaper. From wars and political assassinations to social movements and space exploration, all the news that is fit to print—or download—can be found in this extraordinary book-and-DVD set.

More than 300 of the most significant New York Times front pages have been carefully selected and beautifully reproduced in the book. Read the headlines and stories covering such world-changing events as Abraham Lincoln's assassination, Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic flight, Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, and the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Ten foldouts present twenty key front pages at their magnificent full size. News summaries throughout highlight the most significant events of each era and put the front pages into a historical context. Seventeen insightful essays by prominent Times writers comment on pivotal moments, including "The End of Slavery" by William Safire, "Women’s Suffrage" by Gail Collins, and "The Age of Television" by Frank Rich.

The 3 DVDs include each of the 54,266 front pages printed by the Times over the past 157 years. Completely searchable and user-friendly, the disks are designed to provide access to the full stories that made front-page news each day since the paper’s founding in 1851. Click on a page—the day you were born, for example—and you're instantly transported to the Times' online archive.

The New York Times: The Complete Front Pages is the ultimate gift for history buffs, news junkies, students, and anyone who strives to be well-informed.

DVD-ROMs run on a PC (Windows 2000/XP or later) or Mac (OSX I0.4.8 or later) with Adobe 8.o or later. Free download available on the DVD-ROMs.

The City's End: Two Centuries of Fantasies, Fears, and Premonitions of New York's Destruction
The City's End: Two Centuries of Fantasies, Fears, and Premonitions of New York's Destruction

From nineteenth-century paintings of fires raging through New York City to scenes of Manhattan engulfed by a gigantic wave in the 1998 movie Deep Impact, images of the city’s end have been prolific and diverse. Why have Americans repeatedly imagined New York’s destruction? What do the fantasies of annihilation played out in virtually every form of literature and art mean? This book is the first to investigate two centuries of imagined cataclysms visited upon New York, and to provide a critical historical perspective to our understanding of the events of September 11, 2001.

Max Page examines the destruction fantasies created by American writers and imagemakers at various stages of New York’s development. Seen in every medium from newspapers and films to novels, paintings, and computer software, such images, though disturbing, have been continuously popular. Page demonstrates with vivid examples and illustrations how each era’s destruction genre has reflected the city’s economic, political, racial, or physical tensions, and he also shows how the images have become forces in their own right, shaping Americans’ perceptions of New York and of cities in general.

Open Question: Need help and information about the Structure of the Universe?
I'm doing an assignment where I have to talk about the Structure of the Universe. Right now I started out with how stars make up galaxies, galaxies make up a Local group, Local groups make a Virgo Cluster and Virgo Clusters are strung together throughout the universe like a spiderweb. This is pretty much all I know about what to include in my assignment. I just need a page and that's not enough. Are there any good websites I can look at to get useful information? I hardly know anything about this topic so I don't want any advanced things. I'm presenting this to the class too so it should just be basic stuff. (more...)

Open Question: How do you lock pages in memory using Windows Vista Home Premium?
I know Windows Vista Home Premium doesn't include secpol.msc (Local Security Policy), but is there another way to lock pages in memory using WVHP??? I'm trying to use PCSX2, but it won't even start until I lock pages in memory and I know PCSX2 can be used on WVHP. If you can tell me how to work PCSX2 on WVHP, or how to lock pages in memory I would really appreciate it :) THX! (more...)

Open Question: What Agency in the U.S. can I call to complain about an Internet service provider?
What U.S. agency oversees Internet service providers, if any? I'm visiting my mother's house and am on a local dialup service. They must have a T-2 connection coming into their server, that is two tin cans and a string as the service is so terrible. I believe it's because they have too many customers on their DSL and dialup and not enough bandwidth coming in. I don't think I should have a time out on connection on the basic Google page in the middle of the day when traffic on this server should be light. (more...)

Open Question: how do i let more than one person into secure file with apache?
how do i access htpasswd. i have double clicked it under xammp/apache/bin though it didnt do anything. i read something about command line but not sure how to do that, is that the only way. when i installed xammp i went into the security web page and setup apache password. i have added a .htaccess file to a usb drive and now have it secured. but its with the first user name/passwrod i setup when installed xammp. i plan to create a group with the following GroupName: rbowen dpitts sungo rshersey but then ill need to add passwords for those example names supposedly with this, but i dont know how to enter this htpasswd /usr/local/apache/passwd/passwords dpitts how do i enter those passwords, and is that all i add into the group file...what do i name the file and with what extension AuthName "xampp user" AuthType Basic AuthUserFile "C:\xampp\security\xampp.users" require valid-user above works for me now so only the original usner name/pass can access. how should i change it now (more...)

Open Question: how can i make my server address http://"myip" be http://www.mysite.com?
I have Apache web server installed on my computer and currently have my registered domain use url forwarding which points to no-ip (for dynamic address) and from there I have it pointing at my IP address. I use stealth url forwarding at my domain registar but using it no matter what web page of mine i go to the address never changes from "www.mysite.com" never anything like mysite.com/users/index.html etc. and if i have stealth url forwarding off then i get my no-ip address and not my desired registered domain address. I understand windows server 2003 with DNS can have a local domain setup on it like www.mysite.com. then from my registar i could change the dns name server to mine. i tried this and my registar didnt allow me to use an IP address. how would i do this, my registar (mydomain.com) does this but doesnt allow using ip address for a name server. what is the best way to set this up (even though i have static address). do i have to notify my ISP (comcast) to allow for name resolutions to my local server? perhaps from my registar change the dns server to a comcast one, and notify comcast to forward to my ip address? what OS do i need to use, will XP Pro with Apache work? (i have server 2003 with iis 6.0 , xp professional with apache, and ubuntu server. though i prefer windows, and in particular XP Pro with apache.) obviously i am new to trying this, if it can be done, id just like to have someone who has had experience setting this up to let me know how it was done (more...)

Open Question: If you were to open up your local newspaper one morning...?
... and there on page 3 was a quarter- or half-page ad saying "There is no God, so just be nice to each other. Have a great day", how would you respond? In particular, how would you respond vis a vis the newspaper itself (for having accepted the ad for publication). Thanks in advance. (more...)

Open Question: Why do shelters do this............ it bugs the crap out of me?
To make the story short. I want another dog and it has to be hypoallergenic dog and it has to be a poodle. The closest ones I have found by me are over an hour away. None are local. Then finally today I saw one on petfinder that is just 15minutes away. But there was no picture and I was fine with that, but then when I got on the page that normally has a picture and information. There was no picture(I didnt really care that there wasnt one) but there was no info on the dog what so ever. Other than on top of the picture saying that it is a young female poodle. There was nothing, so how do they expect people to see if the dog will be a good match if there isnt any info on the dog other than the gender, breed, age and size. (more...)

Open Question: How can I fix This problem I'm having with Starcraft?
I just installed Starcraft and the expansion set. I went into battle.net and it told me i needed the updates. Then it updated. It then said that the application would restart now. It took me back to the window were you can pick from like five things: battlenet, direct cable connection, modern, and local area net work. A message popped up on that page saying the operation being requested was not preform because the user has not been authenticated. How can i fix this? (more...)

Open Question: Second part of my story! How'd i do?
Heyy heres the second part of the story. (heres the link to the first part if you havent read: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AnE3bTgOD83.WYiVZpAvB0Psy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20081221212839AATCYJD ) I turned around and went back from the way i came from....i was walking the empty halls once again.. i guess i'm sorta hoping i'll run into him again if i go this way... he seemed different... like no one else i know.. i wonder why ihave never seen him before.. I entered the library and found a free table and sat down.. i took out my history book and opened it up to page 136 The Life of Anne Boleyn... ahh so thats what her name was.. I started writing my report and got about half a page done.. then i got lost in my thoughts about what had happened earlier.. then it hit me.. I dont even know his name!.. well no use thinking about him now this school has over 2,000 students i'm never going to find him without knowing his name and him not knowing mine... i finished up my report and packed up and walked those empty halls one last time to the main doors. I have to head home now its already 4:00... and i have to prepare dinner and help my younger sister with her homework and do the laundry, then finish my english homework too.. I better get going i have a lot to do.. I hate but love my walk home. An oximoron I know. Its not distance i hate becasue its only a 3 mile walk from the school to home. Its not time, although i do tend to run late, but its only a half an hour walk. What i hate is what i see. Friends, couples, Familys.. Everyone. They all have someone to walk with, to talk to, to be with. Me? Nah i'm always alone. But i guess thats my fault. No matter how hard someone trys to get close i push them away becasue i'm afraid to get hurt again. Damn trust issues. I could fix them if i would just let go but its harder than that.. the one thing i need to let go is still here.. still following me around like a lost puppy dog. worst thing? i cant do anything about it.... I love my walk home becasue it gives me so much time to think, which i tend to need with my mind. And its beautiful. Especially in the fall. My favorite season. The trees usually go orange, red, and bright yellow. Except for last year there was too much yellow for my liking, but it was still beautiful.. I've already passed past the towns local drugstore, the shabby little community breakfast place, walked threw the depressing dark ally that i use for a shortcut across town and past the donut shop. But now, right around this corner and up a little bit is my favorite part. Our community memorial park. i'm not really quite sure who the memorial is for but the place is amazing. so i'm guessing whoever its for must be really important to. I stop in my favorite spot each time i walk home from school, which is practiclly every day since my ride lives in florida for winter, its a beautiful stone fountain that just keeps running now matter how cold it is outside with a wooden bench right in front of it with a name engraved but its been there so long i cant read it. to get here you have to walk on a long gravel path, past a few willow trees and one white birch, and threw some bushes... i guess its not the main attraction of the park to most people, but to me its the best. its my escape i spend most of my weekend here reading. Well i'm here on this bench, my bench, once again. but i cant stay for long, even though i wish i could just sit here forever, i have to go home and do my normal routine. So i get up reluctenly, and go back threw the bushes and past the one white birch and the few willows on the long gravel path, back to the main road, my house is only one block away now. so i'll be there soon.. oh God i wish i didnt have to go home today.. nothings different today than any other really.. but i just dont wanna go home. Okay thank you for reading AGAIN! and there is still more to come.. i guess its gonna be longer than i expected. I didnt really like this part as much as i like the first part but this is more like a gradual upclimb to the next parts and it was more of an info imformer and it'll makes sense later haha... specially that part bout her trust issues. .... OH! and i'm SO sorry for taking so long with it.. just i can only right when i feel a certain way or the voice is way off. but yea haha. But again thank you so much for reading =) P.S bad punction/proofreading i know but give meh a break i write at like 1-3 am haha okay ya nevermind thats still early but hey my grammar sucks what can i say? thank you for putting up with it though <33 (more...)
