Wedding of the Waters: The Erie Canal and the Making of a Great Nation
Wedding of the Waters: The Erie Canal and the Making of a Great Nation Begun in 1817 and completed in 1825, the Erie Canal stretches 363 miles across upstate New York from Buffalo on Lake Erie to Albany on the Hudson River. A stunning achievement, the canal was hacked through a densely forested pass in the Appalachian Mountains using only axes, shovels, low-grade explosive power, beasts of burden, and some ingenious devices. The engineers and workers created locks, bypassed rapids and waterfalls, and adjusted to countless changes in elevation. When the canal was completed it became one of the wonders of the world. But the canal was much more than a spectacular construction project; it also served to bind a young United States to itself and the rest of the world in one bold stroke. In this thoroughly absorbing book, Peter Bernstein describes in vivid detail how the Erie Canal helped to shape the United States into a great nation by connecting the eastern seaboard and western expanses of America, as well as propel the Industrial Revolution and stimulate global trade, economics, and immigration. It was so important to the development of the U.S., argues Bernstein, that without the canal the detached western territories "would in all likelihood have broken away" and created another, if not several, separate countries. Manifest Destiny would have been denied.

In telling this gripping tale, the author offers a brief history of canals through the ages, explains the foresight exhibited by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson regarding the need for a waterway to the west, and outlines the political wars, financing challenges, and seemingly endless delays and false starts to the project. He also reveals much about the political landscape of early America through his profiles of the personalities and visionaries who devoted their lives to the project, along with the engineers and surveyors, most of whom had little experience designing or constructing a canal of any kind, much less such a massive undertaking. Wedding of the Waters succeeds brilliantly in bringing this rich story to life. --Shawn Carkonen

Kennedy Weddings: A Family Album
Kennedy Weddings: A Family Album It's often said that the Kennedys are the closest thing to royalty that we Americans have, and it's true that we share an obsession with them that parallels the British obsession with their royal family. We admire their talent, good looks, and wealth, and we respect their political successes. We also feel a connection with their familial bonds, as well as compassion for this famous family haunted by persistent tragedies.

The images of the Kennedy family weddings are at once glamorous beyond imagination and everyday in their focus on family and the rituals of marriage. Jay Mulvaney has worked closely with the Kennedy family to produce a book of remarkably joyful and exuberant moments of three generations of Kennedys, beginning with the marriage of Joe and Rose, then moving to the second generation of weddings that includes John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier, Eunice Kennedy and Sargent Shriver, Robert Kennedy and Ethel Skakel, and Patricia Kennedy and Peter Lawford. A third generation of Kennedy weddings concludes the book, including the wedding of John Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Caroline Kennedy and Ed Schlossberg, and Kerry Kennedy and Andrew Cuomo.

Mulvaney writes with uncloying simplicity of the events during and surrounding each couple's wedding day, sharing quotes from guests, relatives, and the happy couples themselves. Clear, rich photos, some of them never before printed or not publicly seen since the wedding, evoke each special day. While much attention has been given to the sadder events involving the Kennedys, Kennedy Weddings: A Family Album reminds us in a single book of some of the best and brightest memories of one of America's most beloved families. --Kris Law

Voting Question: can you help me sort out my photography dba name?
I want to get into photography as a profession. For now I plan on doing local sports, in game action shot sales, to generate some income for lighting equipment and more lenses for other types of photography. After a year or two I definitely want to get into portraits and weddings. my problem is this: Eventually I do want to turn my hobby into a sole proprietorship, but am unsure as to what name I want to use. I just don't know if my name is "photographyesque" enough. Bob Marshall Photography Robert Marshall Photography Robert S. Marshall Photography Bobby Marshall Photography or some other "doing business as" name that doesn't use my actual name? I have a couple ideas for names that don't involve my name. but it seems that to have an image in photography I need to use my name. My name just seems to normal to me (well, I have had it for 37 years)..lol any advice? (more...)

Resolved Question: Should I use vendors from my area or location of wedding?
I'm from a smaller city in los angeles county (so. California) but my wedding is going to be in a city of Ventura county which is about an hour and a half away from where I live. I am not sure which would be better or easier to handle. Should I try and find my vendors such as florist, dj, cake, etc. in my own home town or would it be better to seek these people and services closer to the area where my wedding will take place? I know for a destination wedding it would be necessary to use vendors from your destination place but I don't think mine really qualifies as a destination wedding. It's more of an out of town wedding. I know of some vendors in my area who are willing to travel/deliver a bit as most weddings of my local neighbors are out of town too since our town is small and probably not the nicest in LA. Some also charge extra for going out of town. The costs are not a problem for me. I am just looking for a good, maybe experienced, honest opinion of which will work out better for me and my out of town venue, for the vendors themselves (having to go out of town, or dealing with an out of town bride), and of course for the whole planning process. Thanks! (more...)

Voting Question: Been offered an amazing job, but have a 6wk old baby?
I've been offered a job at the local community centre. It's a lovely centre, they have functions there, weddings even (has lovely grounds) and they also rent out rooms to people to hold a weekly class. There is also a mothers group, book club, etc. It'sa great community centre. I go to the mothers group, and got to know the receptionist at the centre fairly well. She is nineteen (I am eighteen.) And her mother *RUNS* the centre. Anyway, the receptionist (the womans daughter &myfriend) is going overseas to travel for 12months. When she was telling me, I told her I would miss her a lot, I hope she had a good time, and then we started talking about her job, and I was asking her who was taking it on. She made a comment telling me she was "a control freak even when she isn't there and she wants someone she can trust to do everything well while she is gone, but they haven't found anyone yet." I told her I was sure they would find someone, and said "it's a dream job. I would love it. You'll find someone." So basically, one thing led to another, and I have been offered the job. (Sorry for the long story there!! ^) The pay is amazing, $15 (USD) per hr. I told her I could only work part time, and they said that was fine. $15/hr. These were the hours she gave me: Monday 9am- 1pm Tuesday 4pm - 8pm Wednesday 9am - 2pm Thursday 1pm - 4pm Friday - I have all day off :) I really want the job, the money would be great for the family. I have a 6wk old baby, and they are aware of that and said they wouldn't mind me bringing her into work one bit. I was thinking my MIL could take her on Monday's; Tuesday's I can take her to work from 4-6, then my fiance can pick her up and take her home. Wednesday I thought she should go to my mom's. &I could take her into work on Thursdays. Both my mom and MIL *want* to look after her, and are both encouraging me to do it. What are your thoughts? I'm pretty sure, I just want an outsiders opinion. Please voice any concerns. *Yes, there is only one year of work guarenteed, but that suits me fine! zoia. Made a mistake, sorry. I will be working every second friday, 9am - 12pm. I would take turns taking her different grandma's. :) Basically, the money I will be earning, can pay our weekly rent. ($310 USD) (more...)

Resolved Question: Making money from piano playing/teaching?
I'm 15. Grade 8 piano, starting on DipABRSM. I am doing grade 6 theory next May/April. I want to make money somehow from piano. It seems silly for a 15 year old to play in a band that makes money at local gigs, or play at private parties, or weddings. Should I finish my DipABRSM and maybe do it when I'm 18/19? Could I teach now? However, I'd feel uncomfortable teaching people older than me...I don't know what books to use for teaching, how to teach etc. I can't advertise as a "teacher for under 15's under grade 5". I don't feel I could get someone good at grade 6, they need a more experienced teacher. thanls. (more...)

Resolved Question: Florist rip off, have you heard of this?
So we called a florist today for one of my friends who is having a very small wedding Feb 2nd. We wanted to set up delivery and make sure it is there by the set up time. She is having a very small wedding of only 48 total guests. Well the centerpieces she wanted were just simple rose bouquets in square glass short vases that are sold at the local florist. She picked them out on their web site. Since they are not having an over the top wedding, just low key with minimal decorations other than the colored linens and such she thought this would be the least expensive. Well on the web site they are $39.99 each plus delivery charges. So she called in and told them that she needed six of these for her six tables. The lady asked her what the occasion was and she told her a wedding reception. Ok fine, when she gets the total it was way off. It ends up they are charging $59.99 per bouquet NOT including the tax or delivery charge...instead of the $39.99 because it is for a wedding and they have a surcharge on weddings. WHAT?? They are being delivered only, not set up, nothing special, they are not part of the wedding flower section, just basic 12 red roses in a clear square vase that is listed at 39.99. How can they charge $20 more for each just because it was a wedding. And then she would have to pay the tax and delivery on top of the $20 extra per item. What is that. She cancelled the order and told the lady that was absurd. We ended up calling another florist that sells the same thing and told them we would pick them up, they are for a baby shower. Why are they only $39.99 now. How can they do that just for a wedding even though they are doing absolutely nothing extra? (more...)

Resolved Question: Trying To Start A Business... I Need Free Advertising Ideas To Target My Customers?
Hello and thank you for looking at my question. While you are here I hope that you will take another minute to answer my question with your ideas. I am in the process of trying to start a photography business. I would be working mainly with weddings and events, but will also be doing head shots and portfolio photos for models. To start off I will not be working out of a studio, most of my work would be elsewhere anyways considering that I would mainly do weddings and events. But now here is my question... I know about a couple websites that I can advertise on, such as craigslist, etc... But I was hoping to get some ideas that other people may have as to where else I could advertise... but more importantly, where I can advertise for free and be able to reach people who may be interested in my services. I am hoping to get some creative answers out of this. I had one idea to contact many local business related to weddings such as a florist, tuxedo place, limo company, etc... and offer to put a link to their website on mine in exchange for a link to my website on theirs, as well as to find out if I can put my business cards or flyers in their store and in return I will put theirs in a sales kit that I am in the process of building and will send out to prospective and contracted customers. But besides this, I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas of places I may be able to advertise for free or at least VERY cheaply. I know sometimes you may be able to put up a flyer in grocery stores, laundromats, hair salons, etc... but I need some creative ideas such as the one I came up with to contact local related business to cross sell each others services. Thanks again for your help, maybe this will get your brain working, or maybe you already have a thought which I hope you will share with me. Have a great day and happy holidays to you! To Joe M's comment below... Actually I have booked quite a bit of work from my ads on craigslist. Each time I post my ad I get several replies to it, and I have booked 9 weddings for next year already in the past month from advertising for free on craigslist... and I also booked two more last minute ones for this year as well which I have since completed... so I hope this answers your question about that because even though you may not think so, posting on craigslist is well worth your time for two reasons... one is that people do go to it to find things, and also it puts your ad in the search engines! Also, I already brought up all of the ideas you suggested, I am looking for something other than the ideas I know of which you just repeated. Other than to contact wedding planners, which is not a bad idea, but I am sure that many others have contacted planners as well, so I would need to expand on this idea to get their attention. Okay, I need fresh original ideas here.... Oh ya... and again Joe... I dont need vistaprint... I have an assistant who is a graphic designer, and like I already mentioned above. Really, its as if nothing I said was paid any attention to... oh boy..... (more...)

Resolved Question: What equipment do i need to start doing portraits?
I have been doing photography on my own for the past few years. I have done a few local weddings, a few friends senior pictures, sports pictures (indivial and team pics) for a local school etc. I don't have any backdrops, lighting equipment, props or anything special for my work. I dont have a TON of money to just spend right now as I am getting married in the next 6 months but I also have 2 weddings to shoot next year and some other stuff coming up. Can someone tell me where to buy backgrounds, what color will be the best to buy that can be used for multifunctions and what lighting/flashes i should buy. Thanks. (more...)

Resolved Question: How do you feel about baby's breath bouquets?
I really love how this looks. do you think this would be appropriate, with a ribbon tied on in my colors, for my june wedding? http://weddings.theknot.com/gallery/gallery_details.aspx?gallery=20&itemnumber=5 1. with something this simple, could i wait until the night before to grab some from a local florist and tie it together myself? or should i order it ahead of time? 2. my colors are pink and black, but i like the idea of having my maids carry one large sunflower with a ribbon tied on. would that look ok? danni: i didn't say red ribbon. a PINK ribbon. and i'm not following a set theme, like there isn't going to be pink and black plasterd everywhere. also, no said my maids were going to be in pink. they will be wearing simple, tea-length black cocktail dresses. this is exactly how i plan it: baby's breath with pink ribbon tied on sunflower with black ribbon Dr. Jones: how do you know my style of wedding ? Dr. Jones: how do you know my style of wedding ? Platinum btb: wow, i love how the lady who is so original she's wearing the sex in the city dress is calling my idea cheap, ugly and tacky. yeah, i asked. does that mean you have to be such a jerk? and btw, your dress is hideous. Platinum: i was only giving you a taste of your own medicine. you are a mean, rude person on here. I hope you are better in real life. for your sake. (more...)
