Manuel Barrueco is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Listen to his own arrangement of Albeniz's Suite Española and you'll have trouble believing it's only two hands on one guitar. But Barrueco doesn't use his technique to show off. He's a solid musician, as expressive in Bach as in Villa- Lobos. He also makes transcriptions that respect the origins of the music. This is a wide-ranging guitar collection, but all the music is worth hearing, especially in performances like these. The disc is one of the best bargains among all guitar recordings, and Vox's recordings still sound like a guitar. --Leslie Gerber

That today's music is as crappy as it is. I mean look at history, the world had so many great composers. One would think that today's music should be so much more than it is. Johann Sebastian Bach 300 years ago Antonio Lucio Vivaldi 300 years ago Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 230 years ago Ludwig van Beethoven 208 years ago These composers did everything in their head and only used paper and ink. Why, with all of our technological advances, access to culture, accessibility to music are we reduced to listening to SH!T on the radio YO B!tch, I'm gonna slap you Mother F&%$er I gonna shoot your mom slap dat sh!t And the insrumental backing is pretty much the same for most of it. I think it's a damn shame that we, as Americans, are producing and raising such ignorant uneducated people that this new type of "music" is what the majority of people want to hear. Before you tell me I am stupid for confusing lyrics with music, I want to say that it is the same to me. They go together hand in hand. While I can enjoy a choir singing without any instrumental backing or an orchestra playing by itself, once an "artist" puts them together and produces something, I call it music. (more...)

The other day, I had a peculiar kind of "synaesthetic" experience - I was listening to Bach's Concerto in a minor for 4 harpsichords, and for some odd reason, all I could think about was hot, delicious baked chocolate pudding, dripping with rich, dark sauce...that reminded me of another time when I was listening to a dance from Rameau's "Dardanus," and all I could think about was ripe, runny Camembert... Which got my imagination fired up - why not create an edible musical banquet, as many courses as you like...simply choose a mouth-watering banquet of music with their culinary equivalents...be as wild and crazy as you dare! You don't even need to explain your associations...maybe you're influenced by textures, or ethnicity, or key colours... Just compile a musical menu and the foods that each piece translates to... For example - APPETISER: -Scarlatti - Harpsichord sonata in A major, K.208 (Avocado and seafood cocktail) ENTREE: -Marcello - Oboe concerto in d minor (Cream of spinach soup with cheese and pepper croutons) Dufay: "Se la face ay pale"(lemon sorbet to cleanse the palate) Dowland: "In darkness let me dwell" (dark chocolate truffles filled with violet cream) And so on... Please keep in mind that this is pure creative fun - I'm just inviting you to provide the most yummy fantasy feast imaginable. Enjoy! Hafwen x PS.
