Masters of Illusion
Masters of Illusion This documentary hosted by James Burke is a fascinating examination of the concept of how we see things, specifically how images that appear to our eyes to be three-dimensional are rendered convincingly on flat surfaces. Starting out in a movie studio special effects lab, Burke explains how visual illusions practiced today actually began during the Renaissance, when painters first mastered the skills of incorporating the idea of depth into paintings. The principle of "linear perspective," in which parallel lines all diverge to a common vanishing point, sounds complicated, but the examples shown in this documentary make the idea perfectly clear to the layperson. By way of contrast, paintings completed before the Renaissance are shown, and it's immediately clear to the viewer that artists who hadn't mastered perspective drew scenes that appear flat on the canvas. But when artists such as Brunelleschi and Michelangelo practiced using perspective, art suddenly jumped forward. Quotes from Leonardo da Vinci's writings, in which he talked about perspective and the effects of light, are offered along with examples of his paintings that illustrate beautifully how a master used a scientific principle to create great art. This is an unusual documentary that makes fascinating a subject that most people have never considered, though it relates to things we see everyday. --Robert J. McNamara

Open Question: Are men naturally more artistically creative than women?
Are men naturally more artistically creative than women? People are always saying how women are more in touch with their emotions, express emotions better, etc. But, I can't think of a more humanly ingenius form of emotional expression, than the arts. And, virtually all artforms today and throughout history are & have been dominated by men. Painters/Sculpters - Impressionists like Van Gogh and Monet. Renaissance painters like Da Vinci and Michaelangelo. Modern pop artists like Andy Warhol & Keith Haring. And even today, in a post-feminist world where women now have more opportunities than men -- men still dominate painting, with artists like Shepard Fairey, graffiti artists like Saber, Banksy, Retna, Mear, Cope2, etc. Architecture - Take a look at this site, of the greatest 20th-century architects & building designers. http://architect.architecture.sk/ ALL MEN. And the top architects today are all men. Don't say "women don't have opportunities" because a woman is more likely to go to college than a man. So, even with the advantage & privilege society gives women, men still dominate. Acting/Theater - The top-10 paid actors in the world: Will Smith, Johnny Depp, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Leonardo Dicaprio, Bruce Willis, Adam Sandler, Nicolas Cage, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell. As you can see, no women made the list. The top producers, directors, and writers are also men. The creative geniuses behind the vast majority of movies, TV shows, and theatrical plays you see are men. Fashion - Yes, even fashion. Although this industry caters mainly to women, the brains and top designers behind most of these lines are men. Firstly, most women's clothing was originally invented by men (and at one time, originally worn by men). My girlfriend has her own fashion blog, where she talks about all the latest fashions. And I notice that at least half of all the women's fashions she features about on her blog are clothing items designed by men. The list of top fashion designers are as follows: Yves St. Laurent, Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, Perry Ellis, Calvin Klein, Russell Simmons, Marc Ecko, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, Giorgio Armani, Gianni Versace, Sean Combs, Hugo Boss, Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana, Salvatorre Ferragamo, Guccio Gucci, Dov Charney Music - Virtually all music genres are dominated by men. Everyone from classical masters of Beethoven, Bach, & Mozart, to rock bands like Aerosmith, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, & Metallica, to Hip Hop artists like Jay-Z, Ludacris, LL Cool J, Run-DMC, 2Pac, & KRS-One, to Soul/R&B greats of Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, etc... other genres dominated by men: Jazz, Blues, Country, Techno, Heavy Metal, Reggae, Funk, Disco, Salsa, Reggaeton. The best-selling album of all time is "Thriller" by Michael Jackson. And besides the artists & lead singers being dominated by men, most of the backup musicians that play instruments are male. And I can venture in to other artforms, like magicians, circus performers, dance, etc. -- all where men dominate. And I know one of the feminist responses will be "yeah but women didn't have access to the schooling/instruction that men had to learning the mediums, etc." You do realize that many of these men were self-taught geniuses? Beethoven did not have a teacher or go to any schools. Da Vinci was also self-taught. Rappers do not go to "rap school" either. If we were to assume that women & men are equal when it comes to artistic creativity, then we should've seen just as many self-taught female geniuses as we do male geniuses, without schooling. But we don't. Are males more artistically creative than women? scottishguy: Exactly! As I said before, women now have more opportunity and privilege than men... more women are going to school and are encouraged to go to school. Yet, they are still behind men in the "real world" despite all of this. And men actually score higher on SAT's than women, for the record. Capone: Yes, but eccentricity amongst artists is not exclusive to men. The women that are brilliant in these fields tend to be eccentric as well. Dracula: LOL@ Paris Hilton. Please tell me you're not serious. She's not an "artist". She's a heiress socialite & bimbo, that got famous for giving a guy a blowjob. Oprah is also not an artist, she's a talk show host and a business mogul. Half of your list is of people I've never heard of. But, you should read "The Mrs." post. She said that feminists would begin to list artists -- but for every female artist you list, I can list 10 or more. And all 10 males will be greater artists than the one female artist you listed. So what's your point? Oh yeah the top comedians are male too. Forgot about that one. Men are funnier than women. (more...)

Open Question: What is a basic plan of attack to learn piano on my own?
okay, first thing please do not tell me to get a teacher because that won't help. that's the equivalent telling me to just buy flowers when i'm asking how to start my own garden. now with that said, what i would like to do is eventually learn piano and at my own pace. i'm trying to come up with some sort of plan of attack. i am thinking focus on learning to read and really understand reading sheet music. and then incorporate the reading music into playing it onto a keyboard/piano. at some point after teaching myself on the keyboard/piano i would probably find a teacher with which i can call up for lessons when needed to smooth out any problems. does this sound like a logical approach? i am curious to hear from instructors/teachers as well as self taught pianists to get their opinion of how to accomplish this. i am self-motivated and have taught myself other skills, so i am confident in taking up this difficult task. I am extremely determined, yet a completely inexperienced aspiring pianist on a budget, so once again please don't just tell me to get a teacher. for now, i am my teacher. PS: 2 books i am ordering are Alfred's Basic Piano Course, lesson 1 as well as The Piano Handbook: A Complete Guide for Mastering the Piano. Any thoughts or experience on these 2 books? (more...)

Open Question: Okay here is the preface to my story I noe its kind of long but could you PLEASE read it PLEASE?
Preface: Henry stood against the wall of the hotel room; watching the human teens bouncing and swaying to the music. The party was rhythmic; the music pulsed threw the crowd enchantingly. The humans danced trance like, their minds in a drift. They where ignorant, totally oblivious of his hypnosis; they had no idea that it was him who did this to them, his mere presence that intoxicated them so. His eyes skimmed the crowd searchingly, quickly scanning the faces of the female humans, over looking the males all together. Finally one caught his attention. She stood crouched in the corner on the far side of the room clutching a plastic cup with two hands. Her skin was pale, her oily black hair hung over her face hiding her eyes, her thoughts where just as depressing and gloomy as her appearance. She was here alone, uninvited, none here new her name or that she even existed, she had only come because her mother had urged her out of the house so that she could spend the night drinking. This girl was an insignificant, nameless, nobody who wouldn?t be missed if she was to disappear. She was perfect. Henry pushed his will threw her mind nudging her to look up at him; once she did, their eyes met; he had her. Henry threw his inner self in to her mind like a fishermen?s hook. Walking into the center of the crowed he riled her to him. She walked slowly; a voice in the back of her head implored her not to come, but Henry?s will overruled the voice, she came to him. Henry placed his hand on her lower back and they began to dance moving as one to the music. Henry drew on the Allure string in the air of the room, filling the space around the girl with it. His charm soaked into the girl from every pore and opening, he observed the effects threw her mind. Her heart started racing, the surrounding crowed became a blur of swaying figures. The music pounded in her ears driving out any and all thoughts. Ecstasy filled her; her movements became more sensual, more fluid. Her heart was peeking, her blood was boiling; she wasn?t going to last much longer. The smell of her boiling blood caused Henry?s mouth to water, sour liquid seeping from his gums. He pulled her head sideways and bit down on her neck. His jaws locked greedily; as he fed he slowly walked backwards out of the crowd carrying the girl?s limp body with him. The party was still throbbing intoxicated, no one noticed them. When Henry finished with the girl he laid her across one of the beds; she could have been sleeping. But Henry was well pass vivacious; the girl?s blood had fueled his body, but not quenched his thirst. He was a deadly mixture of unstoppable power and throat burning thirst. Henry had to hurry while his mind was still intact. Before the blood lust could set in he grabbed the closes human, who happen to be a buff male wearing a football jacket. The human tried to struggle at first, but the Allure set in. Then he tried to kiss Henry full in the mouth, Henry irritably snatched his body closer and chomped down on his jugular. The human?s body immediately went limp Henry had to hurry before someone saw him. A homophobic, drunken, teenage jock was sure to talk about the guy he saw sucking the quarterback?s neck. As he fed calm entered Henry?s mind he regained his grip on his thoughts. Henry finished with the quarterback and threw him onto the bed with the girl. He quickly looked around, tasting the minds of the nearby humans, none saw anything. Henry left the party, the humans still high on his essence. Henry walked down the crowed street his hands in his pockets, his face to the ground. Henry had mastered the art of being inconspicuous long ago. The people on the sidewalk flowed around him like air around a rock. Henry just walked disregarding the people all around him, getting only brief taste of their thoughts. ?What should I wear to the party?? ?Should I cook tonight?? ?I think I?ll call in tomorrow.? ?She?ll be delicious, maybe even a screamer?. That one caught Henry?s attention. He zoned in on the thought searching for its owner; across the street there was a large human male, he wore a baseball hat his low covering his face, his shirt was grease stained, his pants where begrimed and Henry could smell the alcohol on his breath. From a brief scanning of the man mind Henrys easily summed him up. Predator, rapist, human scum. Henry licked his lips; it seemed he wasn?t done hunting for the night (more...)

Open Question: Grad School for Audio Production?
Does anyone know if there are any Graduate programs for Audio Production? Or something similar? As in, something that teaches about recording, mixing, mastering, synths, and other audio gear. If there is such a grad program at a university, can I get into it having not majored in Music for my undergrad (I'm majoring in Business)? I know there are courses offered by businesses, but I'd like to find a grad school so I could live on campus, focus on learning, and, most importantly, get government aid when paying to learn. Thanks for any help! (more...)

Open Question: college courses payment?
I'm looking to get my masters in music at the Michigan State University, and the price per credit hour is $892.75 (Wow!). How many courses would I take in a semester? I really have no idea. I found out that if I were to take 5 courses a year, at 3 credits per course, the cost would be $80,347.50 for 6 years, but I'm sure this is not accurate. Can anybody tell me if I got all that right? As a sophomore, I need to get all the information I can. Thanks for all the help! (more...)

Open Question: I am considering a Master's degree in Music History. Is it worth it? I have a Bachelor's degree in Music Bus?

Open Question: Does this sound like a good idea for a book? ?
I won't reveal too much, but it'll be called "Dependance Day". It'll be a dystopian novel similar to 1984 by George Orwell. It's about our world completely dominated by an oppressive, tyrannical breed of humans called the "Forns" (I might change the name) who keep the rest of mankind below them thanks to propaganda, fear and making the consumption of alcohol, drugs, fast food and other "modern junk" necessary. Followers of the regime are praised, but nobodyh cares because everybody lives off booze and stimulants and are kept in place by sadistic police forces, yet never revolt because education and propaganda tell them they are perfect and that society is fair and easygoing, even though they are exterminated once they get old or sick with "death-syndrome2 (an unknown, inexplicable disease much like Cancer that kills off random people. Its purpose and cause remain a mystery until the end). The only national holiday and celebration in the society is "Dependance Day", the date when the "master race" people "liberated the world from freedom". Concepts such as religion, art, homosexuality, individuality and war are all inexistent, thanks to indoctrination imposed upon the people. The "master race" humans however are all fit, cultured and wealthy. The plot itself will revolve around a young member of the society who doesn't fit in, who is independant and creative (he accidentally heard a piece of music, which is restricted for the master race, as a young boy, and his remembrance of the tune inspired him) and cynical towards the society. Desperate to escape the world he finds so boring and oppressive, he overhears rumours of a community in the far corner of the world seperate from the society, where the people are artistic and free-thinking yet not members of the master race. I won't reveal much more about the plot: I don't care if what I mentioned gets copied, as I'm quite imaginative and will think something else up if it does (i'm only 15 and have all the time in the world). What I wanted to ask obviously was: do you think it's a good idea/concept? What should I work on? Should I introduce more characters? etc. Thanks. (more...)

Open Question: How many of you gals had the urge to get pregnant and it drove you crazy, whether you're ready or not?
Did you have the urge to get pregnant, and did it drive you crazy? Why or why not? How long? What were the reasons? Here are some of my details: I'm currently 21 years of age and I go to college, with the aims of getting a master's in education and getting a teacher's credential in both math and music. I am currently seeing a really great guy for about several months and we are in a rather casual relationship. A few years before we started this relationship, I had noticed more and more pregnant women (that's part of growing up, lol), but I've never really made a big deal about it until recently this year. At first, I felt kind of uncomfortable about seeing pregnant women. Then just before I met him, it had drove me absolutely crazy every time I see a random pregnant woman! (However, that did not count pregnant teachers I've had) Just a few days ago, I felt this urge to become pregnant, and it's driving me even more crazy! Why? Because, I'm focused on getting on at least a bachelor's degree before considering anything else that involves life-changing decisions (like getting engaged for example). I'm also not mentally ready for it, nor am I financially ready, but those hormones and urges still drive me nuts, even against my will. Serious answers and no flaming, please! Thank you! =3 Lol! At this moment, I've been tutoring at this church afterschool tutoring program and they've placed me to tutor the younger ones this school year! They're roughly between Kindergarten and 2nd grades. There's also some older middle school kids in the same room, but they don't need as much help, so all is good. Some of those younger ones are really easy to bond with, and soo cute! Too bad they don't stay cute forever. Yea, not exactly babysitting, but that is what it comes closest to. Lol! Open Question: should i start over again?? pliz help me. ?
so, i am an uni student studying economics. tobe honest, it's not my favorite major. i lately find my self interested in design graphic. although i cant draw very well, i still like it. i love designing stuff like magazine cover or books. i love operating adobe indesign so much and been spending my time try to master it. mean while, i also like music. i saw a movie yesterday about being a music writer and then i feel like i wanna give it a shot.lol. dunno. i even think about purchasing a keyboard. is it awkard for me to feel that way? tobe true, when i finished high school the first thing i want to do is to go to the design school, but i cant afford that much. for this years, i have buried my dream and passion in grave. mean while, my fam have such a big hope in me that i could make some money after graduating. what should i do? i cant see my self working as a office worker in the future. what i want is tobe a designer. do you think i should start over again? or what can you suggest me? i can really use ur help. thanks. Open Question: Is instrumental transition possible?
I know it sounds a bit odd. I barely joined our high school marching band in August of 2007. I had no previous instrumental experience, and I wanted to play the tuba (no I'm not fat, I'm actually normal to athletic). I became first chair after a few months, and the only tubist to be accepted into the Wind Ensemble (An honors band in our school. You'd have to be pretty damn good to get in) By the end of the year, I became quite popular in the band, got along with every section and member. Though I still hadn't quite mastered the tuba. Now, I'm getting a tad bit tired of playing it, not because I don't like it, but the music's not challenging anymore. I'm in a junior college band, and I'm thinking of going from tuba to alto saxaphone. I don't know if this is going to be a problem or not. I have never played sax. But I hear that it's easy to learn, and you would have an easier time learning some of the other woodwind instruments (flute and clarinet) because the fingerings are similar. So is alto saxaphone easy to learn? Should I go for it? (more...)
