Bob Dylan's unpredictable nature has always kept his audience on their toes. Given his mood, a song performed on one day can seem like an entirely different composition on the next. On the two-CD Tell Tale Signs: The Bootleg Series Vol. 8--certainly one of the most riveting of the Minnesota bard's collections of unreleased recordings, studio demos, alternate takes, and live tracks--two versions of "Mississippi," which Dylan originally wrote for Time Out of Mind, bear that out. The first, where he is backed only by producer Daniel Lanois' poignant electric guitar, finds him wistful in his memories of Rosie. But by disc two, where he reprises the song with a whole band, his reading of the same lyric is dispassionate, as if he were recounting the experience of "the stranger that nobody sees," as he puts it. While the second rendition disappoints, the 27-song album, which covers material from 1989's Oh Mercy through 2006's Modern Times, offers a king's riches. In replacing the banjo with cranked-up electric guitars on a blistering live performance of "High Water (For Charley Patton)," he makes the song nearly an angry manifesto. (Another live song, "Ring Them Bells," thrills with the stunning raw power of his early performances, and renders the studio original utterly bland.) Not everything seems up to Dylan's remarkable standards (conjuring a black R & B voice for "Can't Escape From You," an homage to early rock and roll, seems off kilter and silly). But the breadth and scope of the material (from sneering and tender folk originals, to covers of Jimmie Rodgers and Robert Johnson blues, to a collaboration with bluegrass king Ralph Stanley, and side excursions into ragtime and waltz) reinforce his position as the premier songwriter of his generation. -– Alanna Nash

I am thinking of buying two different speaker component sets. Both are Pioneer TS series component speakers. The first is the Pioneer TS-C720PRS, which I have read very good reviews of the item, the other speaker set are the Pioneer TS-D1720C. I am matching the two and not getting both of one, due to both money issues and also the fact that the TS-D1720C handles more RMS and seems to handle bass well; whereas the TS-C720PRS seems to handle midrange and higher pitched noises very well - i'm sure it handles bass well too. Now if i do get the two, which of the two should i place in the doors or back? By the way i am putting them in a 98 Nissan maxima Gold..i have a 8 inch nos bazooka tube, and i might put another in there beside it. I need a new amplifer though since the one i bought two years won't handle powering everything. Problems with Penelope by Lee Gerstmann Note: This is the script version of a story I wrote called ?Inconveniences? which was the second in a series of stories called Problems with Penelope. The character of Penelope ought to be played by someone with a slim or average figure. The director may choose other details about her appearance as relates to age and ethnicity. Her outfits are a very important part of the script but little details like the color of the sweater and button shirt can be up to the director. The character of Jonathan does not need to fit any specifications other than what the director chooses to interpret. I have no set idea about his clothes. As far as I am concerned, he can wear anything. Characters: Jonathan, Penelope [Jonathan is sitting in a chair in his living room, explaining his situation. As he talks, he looks at the camera.] Jonathan: Going out with Penelope has been fun. We aren?t going steady but we?ve gone out on a lot of dates. Tonight?s date will be the fourth one this week. [He laughs.] I?m lucky to even know someone like her, especially considering her all-around nice-looking figure. Then again, there?s one issue I?ve been thinking about for a while. [Flashback scene shows Penelope walking down on the street while Jonathan?s voice is heard in a voice-over. She is wearing jeans with a belt and a fitted, un-tucked sweater with a button shirt?s collar shown at the neckline.] Jonathan?s voice-over: She always wears jeans that are form fitting and a button shirt with a cropped sweater over the shirt. One of these days I want to see the shirt without the sweater because I want to know whether she wears her shirts tucked in or un-tucked. [Flashback scene shows Penelope walking down the street with Jonathan while his voice is heard in a voice-over. Penelope stretches her arms and then bends down while Jonathan looks intensely at her waist-line.] Jonathan?s voice-over: Every time she stretches or bends down, I try to see if the sweater will rise past her waistline so I can determine what?s going on but the sweater never does that. [Close-up of Penelope?s waistline while Jonathan?s voice is heard in a voice-over.] Jonathan?s voice-over: I can imagine the shirt is tucked in because of its close proximity to the waistline but there?s no way I can determine that for sure. [Jonathan is shown again sitting at a chair, looking at the camera.] There?s always a chance her shirts are cropped also. [He sighs.] I?m hoping tonight she will not be wearing a sweater but chances indicate she will be wearing one. If so, I?ll make mention of her shirt. I?m hoping she?ll lift up the sweater so I can solve the mystery once and for all. [The doorbell rings. Jonathan gets up to answer it.] Jonathan: She?s here. [Jonathan opens the door. Camera first shows Penelope?s full outfit. She is wearing a different sweater than in the flashback scene but one that is similar in type. Perhaps it is a different-colored sweater. This sweater is tucked in with jeans belted tightly. A button shirt?s collar is shown at the neckline. Then, the camera shows Penelope?s face and moves downward slowly to show the front of the sweater and then moves downward to show the waist area where the sweater is tucked in. Then, the camera shows the room proper again. Jonathan is standing inside the room while Penelope is waiting outside the room. He motions for her to come in and she comes in.] Penelope [smiling]: Hi, Jonathan. Jonathan [frowning]: Hi, Penelope. [He shuts the front door. He points to his stereo system.] I?d like to put on some music. Would you like to hear a CD or the radio? Penelope [shrugging her shoulders]: Either. Jonathan [nodding his head]: Okay. [He goes to the stereo system and turns on the radio.] Penelope [pointing to herself]: How do I look? Jonathan [looking at her outfit as if inspecting it]: That?s a nice shirt you?re wearing, from what I can see of it. Penelope [pointing to her sweater]: You mean this? Jonathan [shaking his head]: No. The shirt. Can I see it for a second? Penelope [giggling]: It?ll ruin the outfit if I show you. Jonathan [sighing impatiently]: Well, I just wanted to see whether or not the shirt was tucked in. Penelope [looking puzzled]: Isn?t it obvious? Jonathan [shaking his head, pacing around the room]: No. Whenever you?ve worn those cropped sweaters, I was waiting for them to rise up but they never did. [He sighs and throws his hands up in the air as if to say he has lost all hope.] Now the sweater can?t possibly rise up which means it?s harder for me to figure it out. Penelope [thinking for a moment, then saying]: Hmm. Yes I do wear my shirts tucked in but most of my sweaters are too short to tuck in. [She points to her sweater.] This one?s long enough, though. I am looking to purchase a new laptop. I want something that is top of the line, yet affordable. I want a laptop that will last a few years. I currently have a Dell Inspirion 600m series running on Windows XP. I am very unhappy with this computer. It is very slow, noisy, overheats often, and has a LOW battery life. I will be using this laptop both at home and on the go as I travel between home, work, and graduate school. I will use it for writing papers, internet research, downloading music, updating my ipod, uploading pictures/video. I would also like to use my computer to manage my finances, schedules, and contacts. Please tell me your thoughts on this model.
