Resolved Question: What should I pack for a five day trip out of town?
I'm going to a cute little ranch out near Houston, Texas and I am wondering what I should pack. There will be horseback riding and all that other Texan activities you would find on a ranch. :D I suck at planning lists of stuff to pack, so please help me. The trip is on Tuesday. Please help and be specific on what I should pack. I'm absolutely clueless. D: In advance, thanks for all your help! Wow, Bulletproof, that is a very good list. Thanks so much. We live in Texas so we're just driving and Houston is south of us so I guess not too many worries about snow. It's actually quite warm for Christmastime right now. (more...)

Voting Question: What breed of bull is used for bull riding at a rodeo?
I recently visited my uncle, who raises some cattle on his ranch, and I realized that the bulls on his ranch don't look anything like the bulls you see at rodeos. His have a solid rectangle body, where as the bulls at the rodeo have a noticeably smaller waist. So now I'm curious and I have to know:Does the rodeo use a specific breed of bull, and if so,what kind? I tried to google the question, and the common answer was the Brahma breed, but when I looked up pictures of Brahma, the bulls in the pictures didn't look anything like rodeo bulls! (more...)

Resolved Question: Is this appropriate for school?
There's a small writing competition at my school where people write short stories and poems. I'd written this story for another class and want to submit it. Is it too violent for school? It's supposed to be a horror story. Hell?s University The football team from Brown University was having a party the night before the game. They were looking forward to a big win against Holy Cross. This was it. If they made this one, then they would be so in! Champions. Jake brought the alcohol so that they could really have a good time and Leo provided the house. At around eight the guests started arriving. The whole football team was wreaking havoc on the small little ranch that was Leo?s parents? vacation home. The glass vase was smashed and the couch now had a large stain on it from someone?s spilled beer. Chris went down to the basement where all the booze was stored and that?s where he found it. He came back up with another six pack and the Ouija board. The football team found it hilarious and all of them decided to play with it. To make it seem more adventurous and see who would get freaked out, they decided to mess around with it in the woods outside of the little house. The forest surrounding them was centuries old and there was a lot of history there. They found a clearing some hundred yards in and sat down with their booze and Ouija board. The team captain, Rance, decided to go first and be cool. ?Are there any spirits with us?? he asked very nonchalantly. In the background, Leo tried to scare one of the younger members of the team and they were wrestling in the corner. ?Aw, come on. We won?t bite.? Everyone chuckled. When nothing was happening, their captain said over his shoulder something about how the stupid thing must not work. In an attempt to rise up the social latter, freshman Craig Philips decided he wanted to try. Craig was a good-looking boy, only nineteen, but he didn?t seem to connect with the rest of the guys. He got into the college on a football scholarship, but it was really only his dad?s pushing him that kept him at it. He went to the center of the circle and put his hand on the piece that would direct him to any letters that the spirits would want him to see. Trying to be brave, but inwardly shaking with fear, he asked it his first question. ?If there are any spirits, please make yourselves known to us.? Nothing happened. He laughed a little and so did everyone else. Someone else was about to volunteer when Craig felt a small jerk beneath his fingers. Startled, he looked down at his hand. Suddenly, the piece began moving in wild circles on the board. It wasn?t even pointing to any specific letters, just spinning in circles. ?Who are you?? he shrieked. Suddenly the piece started spinning faster. That was when it pointed to a series of letters, not a name at all, that Craig would never forget: you will die. Then, it wasn?t just that piece that was moving. No. It was everything. The trees seemed to get a little bit darker. Maybe it was just the alcohol. But there was still no logical explanation for the dark shadows moving in circles through the trees and the ominous dark chuckle that seemed to be coming from all sides of the forest. The boys all started running full speed for the little ranch. Their flashlights stopped working suddenly and they were left blind, surrounded by the shadows, that maniacal laughter that echoed from all sides of them. They felt like they were suffocating. Even the moon was blacked out. They broke through the forest on the middle of a highway, miles from the house. The trees whispered and moved behind them. Terrified, they all ran as fast as they could. The next day was the big game. The football players of Holy Cross were excited for the game. They were confident that they had what it took for a big win. Everyone spent the day waiting for seven o?clock to arrive. They talked to each other on the phone, watched movies, played games online?anything to make the clock move faster. Finally, they found themselves in the locker room getting ready for the game. On the other side of the wall, in the other locker room, the team from Brown was silent. Still somewhat hung over and still terrified about the previous night?s experience, they all stayed silent, as if not talking about it meant that it hadn?t happened. Something strange had happened to all of them. They felt different. Maybe it was the booze, they thought, or maybe it?s because I?ve never been so scared in my life. Game time came around and this mindset hung with them. They all held back and their coach was furious. They all watched as the game moved on in slow-motion for some reason. That player from Holy Cross shouldn?t be moving so slow, Leo thought. They all were scared by this even more so. It wasn?t normal. Everyone watched as the score went from 8-0 to 28-0. The score climbed higher and higher. Fans and friends of Brown grew angrier and angrier with their team. What were they thinking? The fourth quarter ended with a massive victory for the Holy Cross team. They went out to celebrate at a house party. The Brown team went home. Craig decided that he couldn?t just go home. He was too afraid to just wait around all by himself, especially at that hour. It was dark. He drove into a couple of neighboring towns and cities. Each one grew less and less populated. The houses grew farther and farther apart. Then when he was driving on a relatively deserted road, his car began to stutter. He had just filled it with gas, and the oil was fine. He couldn?t see any logical reason for this to be happening. Then, Craig?s car just died in the middle of the road. He got out to look at the engine. He walked out and lifted the hood. There was nothing wrong with it that he could find. Confused, he went into his car to use his phone. No service. He quickly looked around to find a house nearby. There were none. Then he realized where he was. He was next to the woods where he and the team had been attacked the night before. He slowly backed away into the car. He had the strange sensation that he wasn?t alone. He locked the doors and buried his face in his arms. He could come up with no better defense against whatever this was. He dared to peak out of the hole in his arms and saw that the whole car was engrossed in a black cloud. (I'm gonna skip ahead a little bit) Mike got up from the bed. He was a predator. As Luke dialed 9-1-1, Mike let out a low growl. He moved with absolute silence into the room where Luke was on the phone. ?My friend?there?s something wrong with him! He was thrashing in his sleep and I went to wake him up and his eyes are black and?I?m not making this up! I haven?t been drinking or anything like that! What the??!? Mike had Luke from behind. He threw him to the ground, knocking the breath out of Luke. While he was down, Mike grabbed a knife from the kitchen counter. As Luke fumbled for the phone, Mike turned around and let out a small laugh. He plunged the knife once in the back, then he turned Luke around on the ground and gave him one more, for good measure. He wanted to see his face. Mike jumped out the window, the police on the other end of the line saying ?Hello? Is anyone there? What?s happening?? (more...)

Resolved Question: What do you think about Quarabs?
I'm considering getting a ranch with my mom and a friend from the barn - once I'm out of college - and breeding horses on it. (We've all been around horses forever, please just skip if if you're going to tell me we're not experienced enough, etc.) I've been weighing the pros and cons of different breeds, and Quarabs sound really nice. My mom likes QHs because they're generally sturdy but I like Arabs a little bit. So, Quarab is the natural "compromise". I've been trying to find information about their temperament, but haven't been able to find much. Obviously, it depends on the specific lineage, but in general, can you tell me a little about this breed? Do you think that Quarabs would be a good choice for us? Also, I've heard that lots of them turn out awkward looking; is this true? (more...)

Resolved Question: I really NEED HELP! What's the best plan to becoming independent? Please read details*?
So I really want to move out and become independent. I don't want to rely on my parents for anything. I know it will take some time and preparation, but I'm willing to do all that is possible and neccessary in order to "spread my wings." As my aunt and grandmother have stated, "It's just simply impossible to become a true adult while living under your parents' roof. You try to become one, but they still treat you as a child and know that they will always have power over you as long as you live under them." My main problem is living with my father. I don't ask him (or anyone else) for anything. I pay my own bills, my own food, etc. However, yes, he obviously does put the roof over my head. And while I love my home, I can no longer stand the emotional abuse that bombards me each day. He has extreme agression, & even though I try so hard to please him, he finds something to yell at me for. Even though I get up at 4am almost each morning and make sure the house and yard is perfect or decent before he comes home from his girlfriend's house, something is just never good enough. So, this has truly motivated me to "leave the nest." I don't want to go insane, I'm tired of being called condescending names, and I want to just be free from un-needed or unwanted stress. I want to move out and buy a simple house in California (LA/Burbank/Northridge/Porter Ranch area), where I already reside. Unfortunately, this is difficult to do, so I want to buy a nice house (nothing so fancy, but respectable) with my boyfriend and relaible/close friend. This is where you come in. Can you some how design a detailed/specific plan on what I should do in order to achieve my goal? That is, how much should I earn a month (and how many hours each week should I work) in order to contribute to house payments, and pay for my own necessities as well? Since the house market is dropping, we figure that the best time to buy is next summer. I have some money saved up, but I really want to make enough so I won't be living pay check to pay check (barely making it) when I do make my transition. Please keep in mind that I am a full time college student (my second year in college), and school is my main priority. Also, paying for school isn't really a problem since I do get a lot of financial aid. If you have any advice, please state so. Thank you. (more...)
