The Phantom of the Opera [Blu-ray]
The Phantom of the Opera [Blu-ray] Although it's not as bold as Oscar darling Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera continues the resuscitation of the movie musical with a faithful adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's blockbuster stage musical. Emmy Rossum glows in a breakout role as opera ingénue Christine Daae, and if phantom Gerard Butler isn't Rossum's match vocally, he does convey menace and sensuality in such numbers as "The Music of the Night." The most experienced musical theater veteran in the cast, romantic lead Patrick Wilson, sings sweetly but seems wooden. The biggest name in the cast, Minnie Driver, hams it up as diva Carlotta, and she's the only principal whose voice was dubbed (though she does sing the closing-credit number, "Learn to Be Lonely," which is also the only new song).

Director Joel Schumacher, no stranger to visual spectacle, seems to have found a good match in Lloyd Webber's larger-than-life vision of Gaston LeRoux's Gothic horror-romance. His weakness is cuing too many audience-reaction shots and showing too much of the lurking Phantom, but when he calms down and lets Rossum sings "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" alone in a silent graveyard, it's exquisite.

Read our CD buying guide
Those who consider the stage musical shallow and overblown probably won't have their minds changed by the movie, and devotees will forever rue that the movie took the better part of two decades to develop, which prevented the casting of original principals Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. Still, The Phantom of the Opera is a welcome exception to the long line of ill-conceived Broadway-to-movie travesties.

DVD Features
The special edition of The Phantom of the Opera has two major extras. "Behind the Mask: The Story of The Phantom of the Opera" is an hourlong documentary tracing the genesis of the stage show, with interviews of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, director Harold Prince, producer Cameron Macintosh, lyricists Richard Stilgoe and Charles Hart, choreographer Gillian Lynne, and others. Conspicuously absent are stars Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. Both do appear in video clips, including Brightman performing with Colm Wilkinson at an early workshop, and Crawford is the subject of a casting segment. Other brief scenes from the show are represented by a 2001 production. The other major feature is the 45-minute making-of focusing on the movie, including casting and the selection of director Joel Schumacher Both are well-done productions by Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group.

The deleted scene is a new song written by Lloyd Webber and Charles Hart, "No One Would Listen," sung by the Phantom toward the end of the movie. It's a beautiful song that, along with Madame Giry's story, makes him a more sympathetic character. But because that bit of backstory already slowed down the ending, it was probably a good move to cut the song. --David Horiuchi

Open Question: Tips for Decorating a Wedding?
I'm having an outdoor wedding on my Uncle's ranch in Texas near San Marcos in late April to Early May. My colors will be bluebonnet blue and white with a hint of red. My wedding site has very large oak trees around it and a river on one side, however it is mostly hidden by trees. My reception is taking place in a civil war-era mansion that has a large hallway running all the way through the first floor of the house from front door to back door. Both the front and back doors are french doors that lead out onto covered patio/porches. The hallway ends at a large stone floored and walled living room which has the french doors in it and has it's left hand wall covered in shelving. There is a fireplace on the other wall. I'm thinking about doing a sunset wedding... or a little sooner, to capture the beautiful Texas sunsets, therefore the reception will be at night and I'm probably going to use candles for a lot of the lighting. Any ideas on how to decorate this reception and wedding rustic but elegant? I'm looking for unique and tried and true ideas... I wish I had pictures but do your best with what I described :). Open Question: Leaking Basement 2 footers- Unusual Situation, need advice?
My basement is the left end home on a row of three. The House is very old, the walls are stone and has 2 footers - the first one left just a crawlspace in the basement and at some point they dug it down about 2 more feet to give more room to walk around, and added a second footer which sticks out a foot, out of 8 inch block. Outside the dirt comes over the rim of the wall at least a foot up onto the house, and I have had people tell me that it should not be that way, that it should be brought down and graded differently to fix the water leaking in the top. As far as the bottom, the first footer is showing some signs of possible Hydrostatic pressure issues, but the very bottom, the second footer does not (that I can tell). There is no french drain or anything yet. I would like, if possible, an expert opinion on this as far as what are my options for getting this fixed - I am sure I can do it myself, I just need to know the best way to go for this unusual situation. I want to first shape up the stone walls and smooth them out with cement to make them level and look good, and go from there. Let me know if you guys want more info and I will try my best to describe more detail. Thanks. (more...)

Open Question: Why are so many people mad at Israel for retaliating against Hamas?
Hamas fired thousands of rockets into Israel. Those rockets were not targeting any military personel, equipment, or positions. Granted the rockets didn't cause much damage and didn't kill many civilians but how long was Israel expected to put up with this and not kick some butt? If someone was throwing stones at your house and the police wouldn't do anything about it. How long do you put up with it before you get a baseball bat and start swinging at them? And after the swinging stops should you complain because someone else supports the person with the bat instead of the one throwing stones? And how many times do you have to get hit on the head before you learn to not throw stones at other peoples house even if your ancestors did live there years ago? Remember this. In 1948 the nations of Israel and Palestine were formed by the UN, not by the US or UK, the UN took what was known as the Trans Jordan region and formed the original boundaries of Israel and Palestine. And no the present day boundaries aren't the boundaries originally set. But as the song goes- And that was yesterday and yesterday's gone. (more...)

Open Question: would you as my neighbor throw stones at my house?
knowingly that for every stone you throw, i would throw hundred of stones back at you? then , why would HAMAS fire rockets at Israel if they are true Palestinians? If they want war, why not mass troops and technology and go in full force ? Is this an international scam? (more...)

Open Question: Yet another "is my poetry good" question?
Okay so like I know that people are sick of these questions but I need some help...? Not sure if my poems are really that good...it may look long but the lines are really short... The fingers of winter?s breath caress the trees and as winter breathes the trees shiver and lose their leaves, are covered with frost, and stand like sentries. Watching over the frozen world dazzlingly white sparkling with wonder the trees stand tall. Winter?s breath penetrates every corner of the earth. No stone is left warm, no blade of grass is green. Everything is a uniform yet dazzling shade of shining white. Winter?s breath sneaks into houses frosting windows to children?s delight and withering flowers, showing its power over life. Winter has control over color wind and temperature and exercises this power, leaving everything in its path dazzling to my eyes. umm how is it a short story??? To Monsieur Martian: Thanks, I like your poem. It's interesting. yeah, I know my poems are long, I can't control myself from hitting the enter key! arrgghh. It's like impossible for me to write long lines of poetry! oh well, I'll keep trying... (more...)

Open Question: Thoughts on Ezekiel 8-11:25, Psalm 22, Ezekiel 26:12, etc. (prophecy)?
Ezekiel 8-11:25 talks as if Ezekiel is in Babylon as he sees the events that are happening in Jerusalem. I read something that said this about it (NIV Archaeology Bible): "Ezekiel 8-11 contains a unique vision of events that were transpiring in Jerusalem, made possible when 'the Spirit lifted [Ezekiel] up ... and took [him] to Jerusalem' (8:3). Elsewhere in the book an intimate knowledge of events in faraway Jerusalem is implied (e.g. 24:1-2). It appears impossible that Ezekiel in Babylon could have known in such detail the events in Jerusalem except by divine inspiration. Therefore many scholars are now of the opinion that Ezekiel really prophesied in Jerusalem until the city fell. The clear statements of this book, however, indicate his presence with the Jews in Babylon when he 'saw' (8:6, 9-10) the events taking place at Jerusalem." Verse 3 reads "He stretched out what looked like a hand and took me by the hair of my head. The Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and in visions of God he tool me to Jerusalem..." Psalm 22 seems to be one of the only messianic prophecies I have seen that seems to be pretty descriptive. Is it reasonable to think it is talking about the crucifixion (crucifixion did not come around until the Romans or sometime around them)? Ezekiel 26:12 reads "They will plunder your wealth and loot your merchandise; they will break down your walls and demolish your fine houses and throw your stones, timber and rubble into the sea." Alexander the Great threw the rubble from Tyre into the sea to build a causeway so he could attack the island province of Tyre. In the next verse it is declared that Tyre will never be rebuilt. Somewhere else it is claimed that Bablyon will never be rebuilt either. What do you makes of these prophecies? A good amount of prophecies I have read seem to be pretty vague but these seem to be more specific and harder to discount, especially the ones relating to the fall of cities and the way they are destroyed. There is also Daniel's prophecy of the "four beasts." What do you make of these prophecies? What are your thoughts on these? Can you refute them in an intellectual manner (with sources preferably)? Prophecies seem to be really plentiful in religious texts and without prophecies I think it would be hard for some people to even entertain some religions. (more...)

Open Question: I hate my girlfriend's family, how should i handle it?
We've been together for over 2 years now and it has suddenly came to a big stepping-stone for our relationship. Our relationship began through secrecy within the first few months since her father didn't approve of her in having a boyfriend. Eventually, everyone found out and it was miserable for the both of us. Her family took away her phone, computer limiting the communication she had with me and even threatened to ship her off to a relatives home since it would be much farther away from me. Ultimately, we overcame these obstacles and managed to be with one another. She would lie and lie to her family in order to come and meet me so we could spend time (I lived 2 hours away from her). Around our 7 months together, i drove her home after going to the mall one night and there her brother was... he beat me up right outside of their home. Her dad has said many things that was an insult to my entire family. I have not done anything WRONG! I'm a first-year college student and i'm currently in one of the best Universities' in the nation. What else could they ask for? Since there has been so many obstacles that we had to overcome in order to be with each other, it has haunted me so much that it interferes with my personal life. It may sound unreasonable, but the problem now lies within my girlfriend and I. Her family knows that there is nothing they can do to stop us, but i am now the problem. Since i hate her family so much, i get agitated whenever she talks to her family or have any concerns towards them. Now, they were the ones who disowned their own daughter just because their daughter wanted to be with me... someone who cares for her, someone who truly loves her. They even agreed to put her into foster home and luckily my parents was able to become her foster parents for half a year. Suddenly after the semester had ended, her entire family went down to my house and took her daughter back without any proper reasoning... then the problem started. I can't stand the fact that she talks to her family knowing that how much of a "monster" they were to our relationship and how much they've negatively impacted us. It's like whenever she mentions about them, i instantly become infuriated and end up yelling at her. I understand that i love her and not her family, but the everlasting impact is too profound to forget. It's like i've become a totally different person... i don't even know who i am anymore. Whenever we talk to each other nowadays, the first things that i ask is whether she talks to her family or not... did she do anything with them? It's like i don't care or love her anymore, and that i put the hatred that i have for her family in front of our love. I just can't help it... i truly love my girlfriend and we're planning to move in together this summer... I need guided comments/feedback. I would greatly appreciate it! (more...)

Open Question: rent to own....bad idea? Very long but desperate for opinions?
Earlier this year my husband and I were married. shortly after, an apartment building came up for sale or rent to own. My husband is german and we are in the process of his paperwork so he has no social security number. I am only 23 and was unable to obtain a loan large enough due to not having enough credit history. We decided to do the rent to own until we were able to finance the property. (Money isn't the issue. I own another small, yet thriving business. My husband worked as a computer programmer in Germany and has a nice savings). Now in a rent to own agreement what is the landlord allowed to do? The agreement we have simply says how much well pay by the 7th of each month or there will be a $25 fee it goes on to say that we may pay it off early with no penalty. It states the interest rate, price, and term. A couple weeks ago the landlord came angry because we didn't pay the taxes. We informed him we did thought he would pay them (just like when you finance throw a bank-its included in the payment) and he had never told us anything about it nor had he given us a bill. He said if we did not pay the taxes by the 31st he would take the building back. We paid it however it left us short for our payment. We asked him if it would be ok if we pay the difference two weeks after the due date and we'd pay the late fee. (Due to the cost of the taxes we cashed in an investment however we didn't receive the money by the 31st. It is to be here in a week, we asked for 2 wks so to guarantee we would have the check). He began screaming about how we aren't paying the bills. (which we are I have all the receipts) he went on to say how i had my x-mas lights 24 hrs a day wasting electric and how we allow the upstairs apartment to have a window open (the one room becomes very large, we lived in that apartment a few wks and it does truly get extremely warm in that one room, to turn down the heat makes it too cold in the other rooms) I informed him that it is not his business. these are our bills and as long as their paid then what does it matter. He then basically called us pigs and asked if we knew how to clean. I had stones on my porch (it is next to the main road and is very difficult to keep clean) that he saw my porch and would hate to see the inside of my house! I am very insulted. He also is angry about any thing we want to do. He does not want us to bring in a landscaper. He says the building is fine, which it is not. He did not even have fire alarms in the apartments. He was angry and screaming at us in Walmart one day because we purchased fire alarms for all the units. There were two dead trees in the yard (one leaning into the building) we had cut down he said we were wasting money. He is constantly threatening to take this place back. Is he allowed to do that? We are within the contract. Our payment is always made on time. with the exception of this one but is still OK according to the agreement as long as its received by the first of the next month. We have an appointment to see our lawyer but I would just like to get some opinions for my peace of mind. I thought a rent to own deal would be just like buying through a bank. They don't care if you tear the place down as long as they get their money. (more...)
