There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.

The 10th anniversary edition of the landmark film repackages most of the extras found in the original Ultimate Toy Box set plus a few more. Two keen retrospectives are new, one with an assortment of talents including Roy Disney and Peter Jackson chiming in on the film's impact. The other is a roundtable with Lasseter and three of the creators simply talking about the experiences without--thankfully--any cutaways to noisy film clips. There's a load of other extras since the Ultimate Toy Box was one of the first and best DVD sets. Missing (besides the second film, which will be released separately) is the effects- and music-only tracks. Added is a whopping DTS soundtrack along with a remixed Dolby 5.1 track. The DVD has a higher transfer bit rate for a better picture, but only high-end enthusiasts will notice it. Since the film is a digital-to-digital transfer, both versions are eye-popping. A must-have set unless you have the Ultimate Toy Box.

Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favorite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar for "the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film." In other words, the movie is great. --Doug Thomas

John Lasseter and his gang of high-tech creators at Pixar create another entertainment for the ages. Like the few great movie sequels, Toy Story 2 comments on why the first one was so wonderful while finding a fresh angle worthy of a new film. The craze of toy collecting becomes the focus here, as we find out Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is not only a beloved toy to Andy but also a rare doll from a popular '60s children's show. When a greedy collector takes Woody, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) launches a rescue mission with Andy's other toys. To say more would be a crime because this is one of the most creative and smile-inducing films since, well, the first Toy Story.

Although the toys look the same as in the 1994 feature, Pixar shows how much technology has advanced: the human characters look more human, backgrounds are superior, and two action sequences that book-end the film are dazzling. And it's a hoot for kids and adults. The film is packed with spoofs, easily accessible in-jokes, and inspired voice casting (with newcomer Joan Cusack especially a delight as Cowgirl Jessie). But as the Pixar canon of films illustrates, the filmmakers are storytellers first. Woody's heart-tugging predicament can easily be translated into the eternal debate of living a good life versus living forever. Toy Story 2 also achieved something in the U.S. two other outstanding 1999 animated features (The Iron Giant, Princess Mononoke) could not: it became a huge box-office hit. --Doug Thomas

I for the life of me can not remember the name of this movie even though I remember watching it within the last year or so. Please if anyone knows the name of this movie let me know, here is the general synopsis from what I remember of the film. Two girls are traveling to the family house of the brunette woman and is bringing along a short hairded blonde lady friend with her. The house is of course out in the middle of no where and the other friend gets put in almost like an attic room at the top of the house. Of course a guy shows up in a crappy looking box delivery truck. He of course kills everyone les the original two initial ladies. The killer takes the brunette and the blonde girl follows... To make a long story short, come to find out the blonde woman is deepl yin love with the brunette and the killer is actually this blonde woman and not a guy at all. A split personality takes over... as it shows later in the film her actually doing all the killing. What is the name of this movie? (more...)

My wife and I along with our 3 kids (ages 5, 3, and 1) live in the Chicagoland area. Our house was built in 1993. It's a 2 story home with attached garage. The darn house is always cold in the winter and always hot in the summer. All the windows and back door are sliders and have aluminum frames. There are 9 windows and 5 of them are oversized. The drafts inbetween the sliders in incredible. My kids room is the worst, it's an icebox in their room. The house house is cold and it's the middle of a bad winter. I just bought new Pella windows for the upstairs. I also bought one a new front family room window. The cost to buy and install all 4 windows was $3000.00. Two of the windows are about 8 feet long. I will replace 4 more sindows at about $2500.00 later on in the year, I just want to get the upstairs done for now. The estimate is pretty cheap considering the 2 others i received. My question is the house we live in is in a subdivision, the housing market is bad, and if we plan on moving in about 5 years is this a bad investment? We were going to get a new roof too, but a realtor told me know one cares if a roof is new or not and will not add or increase value b/c every home has to have a roof. I am starting to feel remorseful about the windows but I want to be comfortable and our house just got a new furnance 6 months ago and I don't want that to get overworked with always being on. Now I know that a dog should never bite, but there is a story behind this. My aunt has a 2 yr. old female pit bull. I know a lot are thinking [ oh pit bull big surprise ] This was actually a big surprise. My aunt lives next to a family with 2 kids. One is 10, and she plays with her all the time. The other is 15yr old boy. This kid for 2 years every since they got the dog has tormented the dog. For the first year when they would come over he would hit the dog with objects. I mean whatever he could find. So he was not aloud back over. The dog was scared of him. We figured ok this solves the problem he cant mess with her now. Then he would jump our fence, and tease her being cruel to her. We finally had to go to court over it. They just put almost like a restraining order saying he couldn't step one foot in our yard. Well the other day he jumped the fence again, and was poking her with a stick. She nipped his hand. She didn't attack him she yelped, then nipped, then ran. Now the family tried to sue my aunt. Personally I thought that was completely outrageous. I mean it's not like we could afford a 10ft fence with barb wire on top lol to keep the kid out, and the dog was never outside long and I watched her when she was outside, but I just couldn't get to her in time. She had a tempermeant class yesterday, and passed with flying colors. So I'm hoping they don't put her down. * So does anyone have their own opinions. Do they think that it's fair that this dog may have to be put to sleep due to an inconsiderate kid, and his parents that couldn't control him. Also have you ever had this happen if so what did you have to do? sa obviously you can't read. We have a fence a large privacy fence. I was just being a smart ass saying that it would have taken a 12ft fence with barb wire on top to keep this kid out. Like I said I know it sounds bad, but we did everything we could except move. The boy didn't even need stitches when he wen't to the hospital he had a bandaid ok. The dog nipped him out of fear. Now I have her in classes just in case because I will not have a dog that could potentially hurt someone. Just imagine for 2 years someone constantly hurting you. One day you would eventually get a little mad. I don't blame the dog. I do hope they lose the lawsuit I think they will. I just wanted to know if anyone else had this issue, and what their thoughts were on this. (more...)

People give me weird looks on the street, the say stuff in arabic and then laugh.. and they're not that white themselves! I talked to some Egyptian friends about it and they keep telling me Egyptians are racist.. well how come!? I saw this Egyptian movie I cant remember its name but there was a black woman and they kept joking about her color and refering to her as scary and 'dalma' or 'yom eswed' which I understand are deragatory names meant to describe ugly people.. I have an Egyptian friend and his parents were at first worried about him having a close american friend.. that he might somehow fall for me.. but when I met them they all joked within themselves and said that he can never fall for me because I'm black 'de tel3et soda'..!! I know Egyptian people are kind and friendly and all that.. but seriously that IS considered racist and it hurts people's feelings even if you think its funny.. its NOT! I have a sudanese friend who grew up in Egypt and has told me countless other stories about feeling discriminated against or made fun of by lighter skin egyptians.. she even told me that Egyptian people who are from the south and hence darker in color always marry from their own family because not only is it their tradition but they also dont blend in well with the rest of the population.. specially the women because they're viewed as ugly.. which is silly because some of the most beautiful women are of color: Alicia Keys, Halle Berry, Jada Pinket Smith, Christin Millan,.. Having trust issues. Okay so ive been with my partner for 3 months now. He has had a troubled past but i didn't judge him because i liked him so much. Well here is whats going on. Recently he has been having a lot of problems and moved in with me. Everything was fine but im starting to think he has been lying to me about his life. Stuff like where he used to live, where he works and things of that nature. Ive introduced him to my family, but i have never met his family, Ive only met a couple of his closest friends. Now that we are living together a lot of things aren't adding up to the stories about his life that he has told me. He also has a eating disorder that i just recently discovered. I think this guy is going thru a lot but I don't know what to do or how to confront the situation without it being a problem that leads us to separate. What can i do in this situation.
