This World of Days
"Myrna Marcarian rules the humanist motherboard of Ruby on the Vine, named after an Omar Khayyam elegy but also suggestive of the darkly faceted sheen of Marcarian's vocals. Though she plays keyboards less often than she plays her new signature instrument, acoustic guitar, she sometimes attacks the latter with a hard edge recalling Pfeifer's strum und drang. Ruby on the Vine's intriguing folkpop songs, most written by Marcarian, some with electric guitarist Geoff Feinberg, project a worldview as desire-driven as Human Switchboard's, yet with more accommodation at the end of the stark hallway: Love exists, fidelity too, but you have to work at themthus, the erotic fiats of "You Belong to Me" and "Don't Be So Sure." The album rolls from homespun ballads like "Gather Round Your Wishing Wall" to the startling (in this context) garage rock of "Little Demon" and "Why You Wanna Make Me Mad," the latter two with riffs that tunnel right through the hangar wall. We already knew she could walk alone, and now she's sounding real sharp again. So maybe next time out, Ms. Marcarian will lyrically address the existential conundrum that continues to bedevil the creative class: Should I have gone to law school?!? Open Question: nearly 38 weeks pregnant, having some issues.?
hi all can u please advise. i am attending the coombe hospital in dublin and am having a huge problem. i am 37+5 today. have been suffering with kidney infections throughout but most recently have been in quite some pain the last four days, including vomitting up what little food i do eat, strong pain in back and front, like cramps. the UTI as mentioned also. i cant walkbecause i am literally crippled within mins from baby pressure and cant drive because its uncomfortable. keep having hot baths and constantly lying down to ease all of the above. spoke to my own GP this morning and he reccomends i go to the hospital that i am "nearly 38 weeks which is perfect to induce etc as close to full term" but i refused as this hospital have before sent me home twice even when admitted on my gp letter, and its behind a joke. he then told me to ring the hospital and speak to my OBGYN and explain, i have been trying all morning, as well as himself (he twice rang). the switchboard dont take messages or leave you to a voicemail, and i am genuinely cracking up here at home. i cant seem to cope and its really giving me the blues can anyone advise or something, i feel like i am in a catch 22 situation.
and for those who seem to think i am moaning over nothing. BOTH i and my own GP have been trying to contact the OBGYN, in the hospital as is stated in my question, so your comments about " go to a gp" make no sense and also is hurtful calling me an insulting name.

Open Question: Please help me find this person. I don't know where else to look. Thanks!?
I got out of the Army in 2001, after 6 years of service. I am trying to track down an old friend I knew from my last duty station. I have a momento from one of his past commands (a mug with his title and unit, etc. on it) and I am quite sure he would like it back, for sentimental reasons. I have his SSN and I'm pretty sure he's a Major by now. I was wondering if anyone knew how I could track him down. I checked all the regular sites; 411, Switchboard, Googling, etc. Anyone know any way for me to find this guy. He was active duty when we were in together but I'm pretty sure he is Reserve or Nat'l guard now (probably activated though, knowing him). If anyone can give me any pointers I'd really appreciate it. Thanks so much!
I already tried all the regular search engines... Whitepages included. But thanks for the try.

Open Question: What's your most successful 'chat up' line ?
I'm now in my 40s, but in the early 1990s when advertising agencies in London were merging all over the place and temps on switchboards were having legally to say things like 'Boase Massini Williams DeLoite Haskins and Snell formerly known as ...' every time they answered the 'phone, I sold a lot of advertising space and got a lot of dates (two of whom are still good friends) by simply saying :
'You have to say that EVERY time you answer the 'phone? You must need a drink after work.'
Just to Hatty - thanks for your reply, but seriously I wasn't being serious. I'm happily attached.
Fancy meeting up for a drink sometime?

Voting Question: A Funny Thing For You To Read..?
DON?T CALL US: During their 1978 tour of Australia, the great Welsh rugby union team of that era tried all sorts of devious methods to get freebie phone calls through to their wives and loved ones back home. The players resorted to tricks like asking restaurant proprietors if they could use the phone - and then calling the other side of the world when the proprietor thought they were ringing a local number. Prop forward Charlie Faulkner - a not-so-bright member of the legendary Pontypool front row - opted for a different tactic at the reception that followed the first Test match in Brisbane. He picked up the house phone, got through to the hotel switchboard and barked out his home number in Newport. ??To whom do I charge the call??? asked the operator. ??Err?Mr Dawes. John Dawes,?? mumbled Charlie, figuring he could get the tour coach to pick up the tab. ??Please remain by the phone for a moment, Mr Dawes, and I?ll call you back,?? came the reply. Charlie replaced the receiver and got back to the business of drowning his sorrows after a rare defeat. By the time the call came through a few minutes later, he was in another world. ??Ullo,?? said Charlie. ??I have a call to South Wales for Mr John Dawes,?? confirmed the operator. Charlie took a quick look around. ??He?s not here,?? he said, and hung up.
FQ what would you do to get a ticket to your teams match if you are not a season ticket holder

Resolved Question: A science fiction story called ''New New York New Orleans''?
Can anyone tell me the author or where I can get it? I recall reading it in a collection of science fiction short stories. I may be wrong on the title but the following sentence I remember from the story will give you a good idea as to what it is about.
'' We were all living in the midst of some inextricable grand joke, some cosmic AT&T foul-up, crossed wires in the universal switchboard that put the tattered overlay of a distant metropolis upon the grimy reality of New York City.''
I'm asking in this section as I have yet to receive an answer in the books section.

Resolved Question: Is there much political correctness in America?
In England its apparently rude to say "Ho! Ho! Ho!" in case it offends people. Classic nursery rhymes for children have been altered so it doesnt offend ethnic minorities, for example "baa baa black sheep" has become "baa baa wooly sheep". Also it has became illegal to hang the British or English flag on cars or on council buildings. It's also wrong to say things like "manning the switchboard" because it is sexist.
I was wondering if there was any of this madness in America?

Resolved Question: have a happy new year, probability anyone?
3 switchboards are assigned to take the calls in a certain location. It has been determined that the board A will have a mean of 0.03333 calls per minute. Board B expects 0.001 calls per second and board C expects 36 calls per day.
What is the probability that in one hour, the total calls received from the three will be less than 5 calls?

Voting Question: What can I do to improve my chances of getting a clerical job?
Hello, I worked off and on with a temp agency between 2005-2007 when it was just extra money to help out that was needed. However, I desperately need a paycheck now. I have a 4 year college degree and the equivalent of 1 year experience in the field (when you add up all my temp jobs). I am well educated with all windows programs and type 65 wpm on a good day, and learn easily. I have experience on a switchboard up to 10 lines. I have had glowing reports from all supervisors where I worked but I do have this 1 year gap in my work history where I stayed at home to care for family. I have applied with 2 temp agencies, the county, and a couple jobs where I temped in the past, with no one contacting me at all. I am really not picky, but I really do want to work in an office, as opposed to retail or fast food. My bottom line is $9 an hour. $12 an hour would make me feel like I was in heaven. I could even make it on part time as long as I brought home at least $800 a month. My main question is what should I do now? I can't wait another month for the temp agencies to call. I have looked on careerbuilder, craig's list, etc and nothing in my area for the most part. I live in central/southern California. I would love to hear any suggestions that anyone has.
