Gonna Take You Downtown
Gonna Take You Downtown More heavy bass and funk zydeco from Louisiana's leading practitioner of the new breed zydeco/funk blend, Andrus Espre better known as Beau Jocque. Like his previous records the thumping bass of Chuck Bush drives most of the tunes here. Clifton Chenier's slow blues, "I'm on the Wonder" is a highlight as is Jocque's cover of the War hit "Cisco Kid." The original "Kinder 2 Step" shows that along with being a young master of the accordion, Jocque has also become a first class writer. --Robert Baird

Sings Sondheim
Sings Sondheim Recorded live at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia, this double CD is one heck of an extensive tribute to Stephen Sondheim. Backed only by Paul Ford on piano, Mandy Patinkin gets through nearly three dozen songs penned by the Broadway master. Some are obvious (excerpts from Sunday in the Park with George, in which the singer created the title role), others less so ("If You Can Find Me I'm Here" from Evening Primrose). Patinkin is often mocked for his shivering falsetto, but here, it's actually when his voice explores a lower register that it falters. What's more interesting is when he tackles songs usually sung by women, such as Follies' "Broadway Baby" and Company's "Another Hundred People" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy"--the latter hammed up so much that you can hear the chewing of the scenery. A distinctively mannered interpreter, Patinkin remains an acquired taste, but fans of his will be in heaven with this set. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Open Question: CLICK HERE FOR THE FUNNIEST JOKE EVER?
The Smiths were unable to conceive children and decided to use a surrogate father to start their family. On the day the surrogate father was to arrive, Mr. Smith kissed his wife and said, "I'm off. The man should be here soon" Half an hour later, just by chance a door-to-door baby photographer rang the doorbell, hoping to make a sale. "Good morning, madam. I've come to...." "Oh, no need to explain. I've been expecting you," Mrs. Smith cut in. "Really?" the photographer asked. "Well, good. I've made a speciality of babies" "That's what my husband and I had hoped. Please come in and have a seat" After a moment, she asked, blushing, "Well, where do we start?" "Leave everything to me. I usually try two in the bathtub, one on the couch and perhaps a couple on the bed. Sometimes the living room floor is fun too; you can really spread out!" "Bathtub, living room floor? No wonder it didn't work for Harry and me" "Well, madam, none of us can guarantee a good one every time. But, if we try several different positions and I shoot from six or seven different angles, I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results" "My, that's a lot of....." gasped Mrs. Smith. "Madam, in my line of work, a man must take his time. I'd love to be in and out in five minutes, but you'd be disappointed with that, I'm sure" "Don't I know it," Mrs. Smith said quietly. The photographer opened his briefcase and pulled out a portfolio of his baby pictures. "This was done on the top of a bus in downtown London" "Oh my God!" Mrs. Smith exclaimed, tugging at her handkerchief. "And these twins turned out exceptionally well, when you consider their mother was so difficult to work with" "She was difficult?" asked Mrs. Smith. "Yes, I'm afraid so. I finally had to take her to Hyde Park to get the job done right. People were crowding around four and five deep, pushing to get a good look" "Four and five deep?" asked Mrs. Smith, eyes widened in amazement. "Yes," the photographer said, "And for more than three hours too. The mother was constantly squealing and yelling. I could hardly concentrate. Then darkness approached and I began to rush my shots. Finally, when the squirrels began nibbling on my equipment, I just packed it all in." Mrs. Smith leaned forward. "You mean squirrels actually chewed on your, um......equipment?" "That's right. Well, madam, if you're ready, I'll set up my tripod so we can get to work." "Tripod?????" "Oh yes, I have to use a tripod to rest my Canon on. It's much too big for me to hold for very long. Madam? Madam? ....... Good Lord, she's fainted!!" star if you likeeeeeee (more...)

Open Question: For doctors: How do I lessen my frequency of getting throat infections?
Over the past two years I've been living in a big city with severe air pollution. I live in a high rise apartment downtown where the traffic is severely congested. I noticed that I'd been catching the common cold far more often than when I lived elsewhere. Before I usually get it once or twice a year, and yet since I've lived year I could catch it up to six times a year. Once I catch a cold it could take me three weeks of torture to recover... in the meantime coughing my lungs out, sometimes bleeding lightly due to the irritation caused by severe coughing out the sputum. Then I would be healthy for about two months and go through the torture all over again. Before I came here, I never visited the doctor for common colds. When I came here, the three week torture has forced me to go to the doctor every time. Not only does this cost money; they also feed me antibiotics which I fear might not be good to my liver and immune system in the long run. My parents blame my sleeping habits, which I admit are not ideal. Due to the creative nature of my career, I often stay up much later than planned when some uninvited inspiration suddenly appears. I think it's worth it because most of my best works are labored with love in the ungodly midnight hours. I have tried going to sleep "on time" and find that I don't work as effectively, then slip back into my old habit. I don't really believe that my sleeping habit is the reason why I'm catching these colds so often, because when I wasn't living here it never was a problem. My questions: 1) Will better sleeping habits help me catch the cold less often, and why? 2) How do I build better sleeping habits without compromising the quality of my work? 3) What are some other ways that I can keep my respiratory system healthier? (Don't tell me to move elsewhere because that's not an option for me right now) 4) I eat a balanced diet and have consumed vitamins and herbals like echinacea, ginseng, green tea, and garlic, but found none of them helpful. Why? What is helpful then? 5) What can I do to recover sooner from common colds without having to take so many chemicals and antibiotics? Thank you so much! Looking forward to pick who gets the 10 points ^_^ (more...)

Resolved Question: Why is his ex still texting him?
I spent the day with my boyfriend today. We were on our way downtown and my boyfriend put his phone in my lap. Then he received a text from his ex amanda. He was just telling me earlier how if she ever wanted to meet up and talk he would not show up and crap. Her text said " Sorry I did not text back yesterday..whats up" Which means he was texting her previously...he took the phone and texted her yup hey ok....then put it back in my lap... I was fuming on the inside but I did not say anything. I want to make sure he gets how I feel... What should I do? Mind you this is the ex he lost his virginity too and she cheated on him...he said he would never talk to her and gets insecure when I talk to my exes.. I'm 17 and he is almost 19 I do NOT talk to my ex because he get insecure about it..so why do something that will cause a problem. (more...)

Open Question: USC (Columbia, SC) Would anyone like me to take their literature or Art History class for them? ?
I'm a young professional college graduate who is currently swimming in student loan debt, and can't afford to pay for classes. I'd love to take a Literature class and/or Art History class that I haven't already taken. I would also enjoy a Philosophy class, if neither of my first suggestions meet your needs. So...if you have no interest in these subjects and want me to fulfill your requirement for you, or if you're just a slacker who'd like someone to help bump up your GPA, let me know. I'm not here to judge you or be paid for this. I'm just a nerd with no cash. :) Oh yes...evening classes (after 5) would be best, as I work a day job downtown. Thanks! please actually READ what I wrote. It says I'm not here to be paid. Get off your ethical high horse. I really just want to learn and can't afford classes. :) (more...)

Open Question: Some advice for a stressed soon-to-be college freshman?
I went on a college visit today. I got to go on a tour of the campus and all of that fun stuff. The school is in downtown Atlanta- a major city. And just the idea of college stresses me out. I don't know what I want to do! College life scares me because I've never been away from home. We are Pakistani-American (meaning, my family and I) and they have a problem with me staying in dorms even though both of my brothers got to stay in dorms. One of my brothers even had his own apartment. It's such a big campus too! I know I'm going to get lost. Maybe because I'm a senior in high school all of those college kids seemed really big and tough, but it was so intimidating. I have been thinking about going to a smaller school for my first two years (it's not community school; it's a small, four year college near my home). It would save a lot of money. But then I feel like I am procrastinating. I feel like I am stopping myself from taking the plunge. Then again, I know I would do better in a smaller school since I can get one on one help. Money is a big issue here. My brothers went to private art colleges, so their isn't a lot of money left in the bank for me. They get everything first and it's unfair because I'm smarter than both of them. I did better in school yet my parents will go through anything to make me stay at home. I hate it. I'm 17 and I am just now taking drivers ed. Ughh...I am so worried about college life...I honestly wish I WAS NOT graduating. Does anyone have any advice? I really need it. Thank you so much for reading this.... (more...)
