Steve Reich 1965-1995
Steve Reich 1965-1995 In the afterglow of his 60th birthday in 1997, Nonesuch Records delivered Steve Reich and his listeners an immense gift, this 10-CD retrospective of his work for the label, extending from his earliest tape-manipulation pieces to his most recent compositions utilizing samplers and the video artistry of Beryl Korot. Aside from the ear's liquid sense-making when it hears the dense and limber marimbas of Reich's Six Marimbas or his taut, dizzying Piano Phase, there is a physical response almost inevitable in Reich's music. It stuns and holds you. And he knows it. It's Gonna Rain struck an early chord of inventiveness, featuring an African American Pentecostal preacher's sermon and eventually spinning the title phrase into a jangling repetition of single words. Percussion works abound here: Clapping and Drumming stun with their deceptive similarity and warm clarity. Perennial favorite Piano Phase features pianists Nurit Tilles and Eduard Neumann synched up on two pianos and careening at full tilt in unison before their four hands fall out of time and phrase with each other, only to realign in a powerful swooping demonstration of energy and focus. The latter CDs hold abundant delights, many revealing Reich's late-discovered spiritualism and Judaica: Different Trains' examination of the Holocaust; Tehillim's shimmering Hebrew texts sung with fascinating choral power; Proverb's invocation of Perotin. Closing the set are recent pieces: Nagoya Marimbas, and the sampler-rich City Life and The Cave. --Andrew Bartlett

Casablanca (Laserdisc)(Criterion Collection)
Casablanca (Laserdisc)(Criterion Collection) Laserdisc Release. Plot Summary: A truly perfect movie, the 1942 Casablanca still wows viewers today, and for good reason. Its unique story of a love triangle set against terribly high stakes in the war against a monster is sophisticated instead of outlandish, intriguing instead of garish. Humphrey Bogart plays the allegedly apolitical club owner in unoccupied French territory that is nevertheless crawling with Nazis; Ingrid Bergman is the lover who mysteriously deserted him in Paris; and Paul Heinreid is her heroic, slightly bewildered husband. Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Conrad Veidt are among what may be the best supporting cast in the history of Hollywood films. This is certainly among the most spirited and ennobling movies ever made. --Tom Keogh

Open Question: How do I edit or delete an answer regarding a song that is incorrect? - Yahoo wont let me change my answer?
I started to answer a question and accidentally his submit when I was not finished.. and the rest of my answer was not included in my post and yahoo isnt accepting the edit when I hit the "back" button... the poster doesnt accept email so.. Clarissa P - if you are out there... Here is the rest of my post / answer I think the second song is the one you are looking for: Well,' this first one doesn't fit the description entirely but it starts out with the doo, do , doo... and its a female... heres the lyrics - by the Cranberries - called Ode to my Family Ode To My Family lyrics Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo... Understand the things I say, don't turn away from me, 'Cause I've spent half my life out there, you wouldn't disagree. Do you see me? Do you see? Do you like me? Do you like me standing there? Do you notice? Do you know? Do you see me? Do you see me? Does anyone care? Unhappiness where's when I was young, And we didn't give a damn, 'Cause we were raised, To see life as fun and take it if we can. My mother, my mother, She hold me, she hold me, when I was out there. My father, my father, He liked me, oh, he liked me. Does anyone care? Understand what I've become, it wasn't my desing. And people ev'rywhere think, something better than I am. But I miss you, I miss, 'cause I liked it, 'Cause I liked it, when I was out there. Do you know this? Do you know you did not find me. You did not find. Does anyone care? Unhappiness where's when I was young, And we didn't give a damn, 'Cause we were raised, To see life as fun and take it if we can. My mother, my mother, She hold me, she hold me, when I was out there. My father, my father, He liked me, oh, he liked me. Does anyone care?... [X9] Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo... xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx The second one is sung by Suzanne Vega and starts out with a do, do, do that sounds like the I dream of Jeannie theme song... and the lyrics fit your description kinda Its called Tom's Diner - here are the lyrics: Tom's Diner lyrics I am sitting In the morning At the diner On the corner I am waiting At the counter For the man To pour the coffee And he fills it Only halfway And before I even argue He is looking Out the window At somebody Coming in "It is always Nice to see you" Says the man Behind the counter To the woman Who has come in She is shaking Her umbrella And I look The other way As they are kissing Their hellos I'm pretending Not to see them Instead I pour the milk I open Up the paper There's a story Of an actor Who had died While he was drinking It was no one I had heard of And I'm turning To the horoscope And looking For the funnies When I'm feeling Someone watching me And so I raise my head There's a woman On the outside Looking inside Does she see me? No she does not Really see me Cause she sees Her own reflection And I'm trying Not to notice That she's hitching Up her skirt And while she's Straightening her stockings Her hair Is getting wet Oh, this rain It will continue Through the morning As I'm listening To the bells Of the cathedral I am thinking Of your voice... And of the midnight picnic Once upon a time Before the rain began... I finish up my coffee It's time to catch the train (more...)

Open Question: Do You Think This Story might Get Reader's Interest?
I'm in junior high school and writing is one of my hobbies. So i wrote a book about something... and i want you to read the first chapter and tell me if it's good enough for my age. Please rate 1-5. The first chapter is about a brief story about how the main girl was abandoned but it doesn't really tell the whole story's meaning. The first 5-6 paragraph might be boring but the ending? I'm not sure about your opinion so PLEASE read it for me and don't steal. It's JUST for fun and this writing it what i like to do, so...don't say anything REALLY bad...Thank You :) Oh, and there might be some missing letters or other mistakes b/c i didn't go over the grammars and punctuation yet. Chapter One-> 1. MELANCHOLY AND THEORIES WHAT IS LOVE? That?s my question. Whenever I walk around anywhere, people talk about girls and guys. Why is that? Why did God only made two types of human beings? I used to be one of them, the one who talks about guys all day with friends. Now I realized that was waste of time. What is my concept life theory that made me think like this? Well, my mom past away when I was born, and my dad also past away like, 2 years ago. I was left out, and I couldn?t live by my self when I was 17. Therefore I went to my best friend, Bridgette?s house to stay with her family. Howbeit, I was always alone at that house, and of course, the family was extremely nice to me. I was always lonely and didn?t get along with my friends too much. Then?then I met this guy, and his name was Adrian Woodson. He was in different class from my school and we didn?t know each other at all. I don?t know how, but he heard that I was left out always and both of my parents were past away. So one day, he appeared in my lunch table and started to talk to me. I first thought he was crazy or something but I figured it out why he was talking to me. He wasn?t ugly or stupid or anything, but he was same as any other human being in this planet. Then we started to get close and hung out sometimes and studied together. He already had girlfriend and....I didn?t know what I was thinking that time, but I was undoubtedly and heedlessly in love with him. It wasn?t because of his appearance or his wealth or his compassion. I just was. I was afraid to tell him that. So I just stayed quiet for long time. Soon, I realized that I couldn?t seriously live without him. I had to tell him this someday, I couldn?t hold on to my self forever. Thus, I decided to tell him that I loved him. The next day when I went to the school, he didn?t come to see me or leave me a note. I looked around everywhere and asked people who knew where he was now. Nothing. I couldn?t find him at all, no clues. After school, I walked heavily in the rain without any umbrella, back to Bridgette?s house. Thinking all kind of stuffs about him. What if he didn?t like me anymore and leaved me? While walking, I heard someone calling my name. ?Skye!? Who was calling me? Bridgette? Or was it Adrian? I quickly looked back to see who it was. When I turned around, my eyes were caught into that image I had seen. His face was painful, and his hands were covered with bloods. What in the earth had happened to him? I ran down to him, calling his name out loud as I could. ?Adrian!? When I ran down to him and he wasn?t moving at all, but the bloods dripping down from his hand. ?Adrian, oh dear, what happened to you? Who did this to you!? I was almost yelling at him. ?I?? he coughed. ?I?just?came?? ?What? Adrian! Speak to me!? I shook his shoulder and realized that I was sobbing. He wasn?t breathing at all. He was dead. I didn?t know what happened to him, but I thought as my fault. Everyone near me got hurt and was dead. I thought of Bridgette?s happy family and I really didn?t want them to disrupt their jubilant family. So at night I packed all my stuff and sneaked out. I just left them a little note that I was leaving and I will be safe. It was still raining, and the raindrops were getting thicker every second. It was cold and chilly outside. Where was I supposed to go? I had some money. Ergo, I got a train ticket to go to visit my aunt in Monroe Oregon. It was sad for me to leave my old place. Now, I had to face things that will come after me in my life even though it would be tough and harsh, the strangers, and the new world? It was hard for me to erase all the memories. When I was at my Aunt Evelyn?s house, I usually sobbed all night, the tears filled with bereave and blankness. Then I clinched my self not to love anyone else in my life ever again. I figured out that love was hard thing to deal with and it was like a heroin. You cannot get away with it if you had tried once, and trying to get away with it will be very painful. I started to live a normal teenage life like I did past few years ago. One day, I received a mail from Bridgette, and of course I had no idea how she knew the address that I was staying. Continue-> Aunt Evelyn won?t cheat on me. If it wasn?t Aunt Evelyn then who was it? Who told them the address? Anyway, in the mail, there was 2 letters. I read the first one first. It was from Bridgette. It says that she missed me and wished that I would come back. Lastly she said there was a letter for me and she didn?t read it because she was afraid to look at it. I quickly opened the other letter and it said ?Dear Skye,? The letter was from Adrian, two days before he was buried in the cemetery. Dear Skye, It was really nice knowing you. I first heard of your family situation and I felt sorry for you. And I knew that you were always left out and all that. I wasn?t spying on you, I just heard from someone. I thought it was a rumor, but it wasn?t. You might have thought that I was always with you because of my compassion, that was true, but there was something more than that. I don?t know how it happened but the moment I saw you, in the lunchroom, alone, I felt something. Continue->. I felt something like?like I had to help you and love you, so you will be fine again. I felt like being a protection for you. I know I have a girlfriend already, but I don?t feel the same as I did to you to her. We are soul mate, I thought. I could feel my heart thumping when I see you, every moments and seconds. It was hard to believe but it was the truth, I had to admit my self from it. I loved you. Sorry, that I couldn?t tell you this earlier. Tomorrow will be the last day to see you or even not. I hope this letter will get to you as soon as it can be. I don?t want you to die, I want you to live forever, even without me, and you will, and you can do it Skye. I will always love you?immutably?. From your Adrian, -3,19,08 As soon as I read this letter, I started to cry again. I promised not to, but I couldn?t force the tears to go back inside when it was already dripping down through my cheeks. He didn?t write any reasons about his death; however, he wrote these descriptions like it was a plan. He knew something would happen to him, but what? What did he do? Did his girlfriend kill him because he betrayed him? That can be possible, but it was still odd. Well, this wasn?t really a concept life theory. It was longer than that. I?ll just call it theory. Now, I am 18 and I moved out from Aunt Evelyn?s house, but stayed in the same town, somewhere near her house. I made sure no one know my address even my aunt. I was now very careful person. I had to, but there was still much more emptiness in my heart. I had to be stronger, braver, and a person who can face something that was? And that was the life I had to live, that was my only choice I had. Or else, I will crumble down into pieces, not only my authority, but also my heart that had to remain forever. It was a promise to Adrian, that I will love him forever as he did, indissolubly. No other man will catch my eyes. No one, and it will never happen. Or was it?? Was it going to last forever? The feelings? Will I have the same feelings I have right now in my heart after ten or twenty years later? Maybe not, but I will fight my self not to, whatever it takes, I will put my best effort in it. But do you need an effort to love some body? It was a waste of a time?that was my concept theory? Howbeit, that?s how people were created from the beginning. People fall in love, and there?s no complain for it, they just did, just like I felt for Adrian. When you read or see the romance tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, it has to be connected to how strong a love can take, which was common. Love can take you to do anything in your life, even a sacrifice. A sacrifice. That sounded?alike to what Adrian might have done. Was someone trying to destroy me? I have never thought of that. But it can be absolutely true, when you read a book, or watch a drama, that happens. . Something usually happen to a girl, the main character. Then the guy who loves her tries to protect her and he sacrifice him self to save the girl he loved. That was so common, and it was so?weird. Why was love even created? Why is the word ?love? even made? It meant so much; there were so many definitions for ?love?. Love meant a feeling that you liked someone, that?s one simple definition. Howbeit, there were more complicated meaning that, that, love is such a complication. Why would God create a love like that? What was the reason? Maybe because if love wasn?t complicated, there won?t be even a word called ?love?. And, love was like that, something that can never be simple, the one that can never be called simple in this planet. That was what it was; there was no more development for it. Everything, everything in this planet might develop, but cannot change or hide it self from it, that?s my other theory, if you?d like to know. (more...)

Open Question: Is rocking/nursing my baby to sleep really that bad?
He is 6.4 months. I have always done this. Sometimes he randomly sleeps through the night, but no more than 2 weeks in a row of this. Most of his life he has woken once or twice a night. Maybe 3 times. I go back and nurse him then. When he has been sick he has woken more often. I have tried letting him get himself to sleep (well I turned on the mobile so I don't know if that counts) Usually it does not work...I once let him cry 45 minutes bc the doc. said to let him cry but I couldn't take it after that long. If he starts really crying he won't get himself to sleep. I can easily spend 3 hours going back in there to calm him...eventually he won't be calmed by my presence or touch anymore and I have to pick him up and at least rock him if not nurse. The times when he doesn't cry much from the get-go he DOES get himself to sleep but I don't do anything any different those nights. If he wakes later than 3 a.m. I move him to my bed at that point because it is the only way I can function. So my question is, is there anyone who has nursed/rocked babies to sleep every night and eventually they just stopped needing it without any kind of training or am I just setting the stage for disaster? The pediatrician says if I don't rain him this will continue until age 5. The thing is, I am really not bothered by rocking/nursing him to sleep and then having to get up once or twice a night to take care of him. Al though more than twice really does start to get to me. But the majority of the time he wakes 2 times or less. (more...)

Open Question: Okay this is getting rediculous.....male dog issue?
Okay we have 2 dogs 1 male 1 female both fixed. Our male is 1 and a half years old and our female is 1 years old. Two completely different personality. Problem is our male is a humper.....and he was fixed at 6 months of age and the vet said that once he is neutered he would cut it out. Well he didn't He is a very active full of energy little poodle who gets lots of walks every day (except when its raining right now, way too cold to walk in the rain in the winter) So he gets plenty of exercise. He is an entertainer and all over the place. Then we brought in our female and she is a very calm patient and submissive girl. Complete opposite of him. She is about 15 pounds bigger than him. And she just stays out of his way. Never challenges him, enjoys laying around watching tv with him and playing with him. Both dogs have been through training. But he seems to pester her a lot. She can be laying down looking at the tv and he with mount her and she will just get up knock him off with her tail and walk away well Today he is bugging her more than ever she just wants to be left alone but she won't do anything about it and I've seperated them several times for quite a bit. She needs to let him no that she doesn't want him to do that but we've been pulling him off her since she was a puppy. Is there anything we can do to stop his humping. I mean they have a very easy going life, little stress if any. I don't think its a dominance thing. they both know very well mommy is dominant not them and the fact that he just pesters her when she is minding her own business. He is the older of the two. What do you think My husband and I are a bit concerned....maybe he just has too much energy but its kind of embarassing and hard to explain.... Like the other day he saw my youngest sister (she is 9) and he mounts her leg and she is like what is he doing... And he doesn't normally hump legs I mean hes not hurting anything but its kind of a nuisance but we love him anyway The thing is its usually just our female he tries that too.....its rare he tries it with another dog and if he does that dog always puts him in his place......my girl doesn't but out of the two he probably is the more dominant dog (He hated her at first by the way it took 3 months for him to get used to her but since then they are mostly fine, best of friends) New Years Eve Basset we do do that....and we seperate them when he does it and gate off an area and he goes there....its completely unnaceptable and it make my female skiddish. She just wants to be left alone It sucks too because he has been doing this to her since we got her when he was 8 months old and she was 3 months I will try these things you suggest thanks (more...)

Resolved Question: What's that song that goes?
'I saw on the bus, I saw you on the train, you wrote your number on my hand but it came off in the rain." The band sings it and then a girl sings it. Those might not be the exact words either. (more...)

Open Question: How could i write a prose without using expository definition?
Here is what i have so far, it is a descriptive of incognito... but am i using expository definition? Incognito is the rhythm of an unseen shadow, she slinks into nights allseeing eye of mass illusion, a drowning feather of down sliding deep into an ocean of un-rippled waters. Like candlelight who wears a yellow blue rimmed dress and dances softly in the mask of touchable glow, her identity is a fading reflection of self, painted silent in a rain streaked windowpane. Like the moon, a crescent of ivory who?s stars of alabaster dust are seen only in the dreams of peaceful sleepers; even in light, in day her face is hidden. A black hole trains behind this beat of silent drumming, devouring footsteps as breath dissipates into cooling air, She is seen no more. (more...)

Open Question: Why are people under the impression I need a God to be happy?
This isn't a thread disproving God, that as shown, gets us no where. I understand some of my other post are rude, but hey, we all get that way at points! So onto my point, looking around the world the littlest thing can fascinate. A rain drop, a passing train, or a grass. How's it get there? How does it stay there? The answers we conclude after studying are amazing! Biology, Evolution, Abiogenesis, Big Bang, and How the World can come together out of space debris can captivate and boggle the mind. These simple and complex mysteries keep me going. So to God or maybe talking to nothing, Thanks for my intelligence, but why do your people try to stop what I thrive on? The gift you may or may not have given me, my intelligence? Well of course I have no idea, that's where the joy comes from. (more...)

Voting Question: Is this scene in the twilight movie?
"I was curious about you." "You spied on me?" But somehow I couldn't infuse my voice with the proper outrage. I was flattered. He was unrepentant. "What else is there to do at night?" I let it go for the moment and went down the hall to the kitchen. He was there before me, needing no guide. He sat in the very chair I'd tried to picture him in. His beauty lit up the kitchen. It was a moment before I could look away. I concentrated on getting my dinner, taking last night's lasagna from the fridge, placing a square on a plate, heating it in the microwave. It revolved, filling the kitchen with the smell of tomatoes and oregano. I didn't take my eyes from the plate of food as I spoke. "How often?" I asked casually. "Hmmm?" He sounded as if I had pulled him from some other train of thought. I still didn't turn around. "How often did you come here?" "I come here almost every night." I whirled, stunned. "Why?" "You're interesting when you sleep." He spoke matter-of-factly. "You talk." "No!" I gasped, heat flooding my face all the way to my hairline. I gripped the kitchen counter for support. I knew I talked in my sleep, of course; my mother teased me about it. I hadn't thought it was something I needed to worry about here, though. His expression shifted instantly to chagrin. "Are you very angry with me?" "That depends!" I felt and sounded like I'd had the breath knocked out of me. He waited. "On?" he urged. "What you heard!" I wailed. Instantly, silently, he was at my side, taking my hands carefully in his. "Don't be upset!" he pleaded. He dropped his face to the level of my eyes, holding my gaze. I was embarrassed. I tried to look away. "You miss your mother," he whispered. "You worry about her. And when it rains, the sound makes you restless. You used to talk about home a lot, but it's less often now. Once you said, 'It's too green.'" He laughed softly, hoping, I could see, not to offend me further. "Anything else?" I demanded. He knew what I was getting at. "You did say my name," he admitted. I sighed in defeat. "A lot?" "How much do you mean by 'a lot,' exactly?" "Oh no!" I hung my head. He pulled me against his chest, softly, naturally. "Don't be self-conscious," he whispered in my ear. "If I could dream at all, it would be about you. And I'm not ashamed of it." (more...)
