Hawaii Volcano Watch: A Pictorial History, 1779-1991
More than two hundred years of volcano watching in Hawaii is captured in this pictorial history by three contemporary volcano watchers. Volcanoes have been observed and records have been made of their activity since the early Polynesians recognized the Hawaiian Islands as volcanic and incorporated their awareness of volcanic processes into legends and chants. This illustrated summary of eruptions and earthquakes on the island of Hawaii from the time of Captain Cook's voyage in the late eighteenth century to recent, on going events at Kilauea includes early maps, paintings, drawings, and photographs made by volcano watchers. Lucid, thought provoking, and superbly illustrated, this work highlights the accomplishments of both scientists and lay observers: the Reverend Titus Coan, James D. Dana, Sarah Joiner Lyman, Thomas A. Jaggar, Jerry Eaton, and others. The authors describe the conditions under which the early observers worked, the methods available to them, and the insights they gained through observation. The book also traces the development of volcanology in Hawaii and the history of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. It concludes by discussing future challenges to coexistence with Hawaii's active volcanoes.

Open Question: UK wind turbine, structural failure or something else?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYYjjabo54Q
it could be mere stress cracks in the propellors, it could be that a major ice buildup occured shearing off one blade..(I have not confirmed temps in the area at the time) it could be otherworldly as this video explains.. if what some of the locals said was true.. I did some serious independant research and multiple local residents had seen unusual lights, one guy's horrific story was shocking, he said it looked like a bright, glowing flying octopus with long tentacles that glowed bright.. one lady said she saw the lights flying over the near by canyons, and another (in this clip) said she saw strange lights heading right for it ? im a believer and a skeptic too you be the judge.
according to The Sun the uk newspaper who covered this, they were told the 65 foot blade piece was not recovered from the scene, no trace of the blade..

Resolved Question: Does the Philippines have the potential?
I'm Filipino and I went to visit my cousins for the first time in the US, and they were so racist, like we went out for Sushi, and I said "I love sushi" and they said "You have Sushi back in Philippines??" and they were serious! That wasn't even hurtful, they made more comments that pierced me right in the heart. And whenever I watch environment/going green stuff on Discovery Channel, they always use Manila as a bad example. Is the Philippines really THAT bad? I mean, I know I live here, but not to the full extent, I'm 15 years old I don't pay taxes or experience political things that only effect my parents/adults.
I just want to do something so badly, I can feel that the Philippines has the potential to be a better country with the right stuff. You know? I mean, I'm not going into war or anything cause that's silly but ugh, with all the corruption more and more Filipinos are migrating to other countries like Europe and the US just to feel.. not Filipino! Even our LOCAL tv stations are just taking plots and making Filipino versions of popular American tv shows. It makes me really sad to see that.
Is it shame? Being ashamed of being Filipino and when you see your relatives you put on a super fake English accent? I want to do something so badly, I mean, my relatives want my to live with them in the States and Filipinos my age would jump at that. But Whenever I think about it, I feel like I'd be leaving a big part of myself here in Philippines. Like, I want to become president you know? It's a real long shot, since I'm not the best in class or the most popular person but I want to do it, I'm just afraid that I can't.
I'm also in the middle of choosing possible College Courses. So what might help me with this?

Open Question: Please edit and critique my admission essay for me...?
This is my admissions essay, the topic is, Statement of purpose. I dread writing essays, I realize this essay is risky but I thought it would benefit to keep it interesting and different. If its too risky or just plain dumb I'll keep the traditional method instead. And how would an admission essay be formated, like do I put my name on it, or just the title. And should it be double spaced, or single? Thanks, oh, and be nice=)
Confessions of Miss popular herself
As I walked down the hall to my next class, I passed the many students wearing posters of me which stated ?Prom, vote for April?. I smiled at everyone in appreciation, the truth is however, that I secretly walked by pondering what issues should be discussed in student council, who I plan on voting for in the presidential election, and what our countries GDP will be in the following quarter. The complicated fact is that I have many interests, hobbies no one would ever expect. I could say I enjoy long walks on the beach, shopping, and going out with friends, which is what it seems. But since this is an essay introducing myself, I?ll be honest. I enjoy long hours viewing the changing conditions of the stock market, reviewing political plans, watching the history channel, and spending my nights buried in the fascinating world of literature. Yes, that?s me, a secret slave to intellectual expansion, and worldly issues.
In high school, my fellow students spent their summers at the beach, or at local hang outs. I however spent my summers volunteering at the local recreation center. Rather than going out and making potentionally bad decisions with friends, I preferred assisting with children at the recreation. As I look back, I would not have done anything different because no beach compares to a child?s smile and laughter. It is a marvel how one could possibly be labeled as ?Popular? even though I seldom socialized with peers outside of school.
While some people view school as nothing more than a necessity, I view school as a gateway. The opportunity to learn is the gateway to life. Opposite of the common stereotype, that the attractive are less intelligent, I find pleasure in expanding my intellect. While a great percentage of the country is watching hip television shows, I find my late night entertainment in watching the history channel. Knowledge on where you come from and how things became what they are is a beautiful advantage. All subjects in life are worth learning; Plato once wrote that Socrates stated, ?The unexamined life is not worth living?. This quote is fundamental in my intellectual beliefs. Life would be pointless and dull if one does absolutely nothing to intellectually explore the world and its surroundings. Education holds the upmost primacy.
My aspirations go hand in hand with my passion, my passion in finance. My interests revolve around the economy. I have fallen in love with every aspect of economics, how corporations work, and how changes such as taxes and investments can alter the economies condition. My dream is to work in finance; I want to be the one who contributes to the economy. Rather than viewing how the economy works, I would like to be part of it. Nothing compares to my passion for the stock market, which is why my future in this field will be formidable. It is simply remarkable how the stock market works. Investments are an injection to the economy; It would be nothing less than an honor to be a part of our economies success.
When the two sides of me come together, I get the feeling that I can do anything. I believe that I can make anything happen; I will be the one who made a difference. In my family, education is important to me, and only me. I am the first of my generation to attend college, and I will be the first in any generation to graduate from a University. Great aversion overwhelms me when a family member states how it?s a benefit to work first, and then maybe go to night school. I will not allow this negative surrounding the potential to negatively affect my goals. I refuse to perpetuate the cycle, I will be the outlier.
In the end, I may be miss popular, but my nerd tendencies will always prevail. I have many intellectual interests and aspirations to learn as much as possible about the world I live in. You will only truly experience life when you know how things work. As long as I am doing what I love, the nerd in me will always have my acquiescence. That is an official introduction to me, queen to society, geek to the core.

Open Question: My teacher could not keep her political views to herself and was pressing them onto students?
I have had conservative and liberal teachers. I am a moderate myself. Last term I took State&Local Government. The first two weeks were the most productive. She lectured about the class, we took notes but then things changed. She started talking more about the 2008 election. It wasn't for just a few minutes, she would talk about the election for over half of the class and did not teach! She would have us watch political humor videos, and rant about Sarah Palin all the time. Several times the class got out of control and were people were shouting. It got to where none of the conservative students in the class would speak during the entire class. Most of the students were liberal in the class and agreed with her. I felt extremely terrible for the conservatives in the class. Most of them dropped out except for one. She also made an extremely racist remark one day in class that I won't repeat. Should I say anything to the administration about her? I feel like that I could have learned more from the class if I had a different professor. But the main thing is she talked more about the election than the actual course.

Open Question: I really need lots of different views on this please! I got 3 answers yesterday...controversal relationship...?
Please I really really really need help on this.
Ok Yesterday I typed about 4 paragraphs so I'm going to give bullets about the main points so I don't end up typing on and on again.
Thank you I really need advice, but I can't talk to anyone i know about this...because they know both of us. Here goes.......
-Now I am 19 years old, 20 in 4 1/2 months
-Me and my family moved to california when I was 15 and to start socializing I started swing dancing there.
-The dances were held by a local university and there was a vast age range..about 15- 40 year olds, but most everyone was 18-26 since it was near the college. Everyone was super nice and laid back, and it was pretty much the same crowd every saturday night, so we all were pretty close after a while.
-I was mature for my age, I was dual-enrolled at a community college instead of high school to get ahead in my schooling, and I was typically around older people. I was also tall for my age 5'6''. I dressed up a little for the dances so that probably contributed to me looking a little older.
-One of my friends I started to develop a crush on and I could tell he liked me too. He looked younger I figured 17, maybe 18. and he was so polite, and funny. so for about a year we talked a lot, danced 5 or 6 times during the course of the night but we never got serious with any flirting or anything. A couple times I went to see his band play at the coffee shop (he plays french horn), and he came to watch my jazz band play at some jazz bars. and that was really the only time we saw each other outside of dance.
-One of our conversations regarded age and he found out is I was 15...I found out he was 24! We were both shocked, but niether of us really stated we were shocked....but I could tell. He even seemed a little hurt.
- He didn't show up for 3 weeks. Then when he came back he said hi, and maybe asked me to dance once a night, this continued for 2-3 months.
-Eventually we started to dance and talk on a regular basis again. We didn't flirt at all, but just joked around. After a year both of us made some flirty comments every now and then... but even lighter than we had before.
-He continues to be very affectionate to me. But always so polite and never inappropriate. Always going out of his way to open my doors, walks me out to my car every night for 4 years. Gives me his coat, even if I just shiver. but hes never implied and super flitry remarks, but he does slip up every once in a while. And he always has this look in his eyes when were talking...its so soft and nice. I just can't explain it.
-I had a huge crush on him....and still do. Even in high school when I dated a couple of guys, then never had the same affect on me. I brought my prom date dancing a couple nights before prom to teach him and james just seemed so distant that night, but when I went up to talk to him he smiled and was very nice still.
-He hasn't dated very much at all these past few years. A couple casual dates.....and its strange because hes very attractive, a little skinny maybe, but not boney or anything still well built. Funny, nice...I just can't imagine its because hes had problem finding a girlfriend. when I ask him about it (I was supportive and never let him know how much I liked him because it would have been rediculous) he just says their "ok" or "nothing special"
-so now I'm older.....and I still have these feelings. If I want to persue a relationship I have the feeling I need to give the green light...so he wouldn't feel like I would think of him as a creep or it being weird for him to ask me out. I can tell he still likes me....
Would it be weird if we got together....but its not like he every tried anything when I was younger. And he didn't know how old I was off the bat either. I just don't know what to do. If we'd be happy whats the point, right?
Neither of us has ever directly said anything about this either.
How can i handle this with my family? They know we were friends when I was a teenage....I don't want them to think he was some petifile or somthing..........they don't really know my situation. I had always felt silly talking about it.
What would be right to do there?

Open Question: Introducing our Siberian mix to young children issues; advice needed!?
Well, we have a sixteen week old Siberian husky mix. Skylar is about 25 pounds, so holding her isn't too easy. We are working on getting her out of the house to Petsmart and the local park (not dog park, just park). She's making improvement.
However, whenever she sees the little neighbor girl and the girl's younger brother, she is really hard to handle. I understand the puppy greeting; licking, rolling over, wiggling, and submissive ears, but she gets so caught up in it, it scares the girl. The girl starts backing up while still giving Skylar attention and petting her. It irks me because I wish I could just get Skylar to sit. Skylar DOES know "sit","down", "wait", a short "stay", and "watch me", but when she sees people, nothing can get focus really.
We don't even let Skylar near the girl's brother who is only five. She jumped too much on him. (Of course we knocked her off, but she wouldn't get the picture.)
Any advice on how to really calm Skylar down when she sees small kids?

Resolved Question: Why do people bounce the reins on western pleasure horses?
I was at a local western pleasure show and while watching the warm up I noticed several riders would hold their hand out over the horse neck and do a bouncing type motion. It was not real hard but enough to wiggle the bit. They would do this a bit then put their hand back into the normal position. No one did this while showing so I am guessing it is a training thing.

Open Question: ALERT!?! Over-Protective Parents -HELP!?!?
Please take the time to read, and answer - it would be much appreciated =D
Alright so here' s the dealio:
I am a boy 15 years old going on 16, like every teen my age I want to be as independent as possible.
Scenario:
Parents never gave the sex talk and never talked about girls, parties or anything else to do with that subject. Yet ever time I go out they seem to think I'm going to go out and do drugs, drink and whatever else. They tell me to be home by 9:00pm and never give a reason. They let me have "sleepovers" but call to make sure I arrived at the house and phone 1st thing in the morning (to make sure I didn't do anything). In other words:
NO TRUST WHAT - SO - EVER!!!
The only reason for this over-protectionI I could have given them is only one time! When I was 13 I drank a sip of beer at a sleep-over and was found out. (honestly)
UNBELIEVABLE!
Second example:
I was walking home with my friend from getting a movie at a local video rental place, and we stop by a friends house to say hi, they invite us in to watch a movie, I phone home and tell where I am and when I should be home. My Dad shows up at the door 20 minutes later and I am grounded for 3 weeks? Again no reason? There is no way he could have known where this friend lived because I had never been to his house previously? Over-protective enough?
another example =P:
I was going to a school dance, I go to pet the cat at the side of the house, the automatic light goes off, he sees it from inside, runs outside, accusing me of doing something (doesnt say what), he makes me go back inside, later he lets me go for the end of the dance, and says if he hears of me leaving the building I will be in massive trouble!?! (still not specifying why).
Extra Info:
- My Dad and I never get along
- He gets angry super easily! example: I asked a question about the economy crash and if we were affected, he frieked and my mom came to my defence, he screamed and blamed her for never taking his side and wouldn't talk to us for days.
- I want to be more independant
- Will not let me have friends he hasn't met, and yet he tells me to get more friends!
Continued...
I will be honest I want to go to a party or have fun with friends, have a girlfriend and live a little?
I am not stupid I do good in school, and am told I am the most mature of all my friends yet my parents dont trust me with my life what do I do?
I can figure right from wrong, I am never going to do drugs, and I wont do anything I dont feel completely confortable with. I am responsible.
So I told you the history! decide for yourself if this is an act of a overprotective parent,
What can I do to stop it? or at least get more respect / trust
PLEASE HELP!?!?!
P.S. Sorry if this is too long i just kinda had to vent.

Open Question: Do you know the name of any of these old kid movies?
One of them is about a boy and he has a dalmation and I think his conscience is talking to him throughout the movie. There's a lot of singing and dancing in there too I think. One dance was on a blacktop it looked like with trash cans and i remember ice cream being served and a concert at the end? everyone sitting in grass or something.
And then there's a movie I used to watch and all I remember about it was a car driving on a road and it was night outside but a BIG yellow car and I think people were in it singing or something. I think that movie also has someone rollerblading in it and a pink room or something. AND something to do with trying to freeze a snowman in the ice box but it doesn't work :(
The last one is a series my mom would always pick up for me and my sister at a local library about a little girl and she lived in a town house or something and whenever it was gloomy outside she'd walk around and hop in puddles. I remember her liking to make peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches and I think in one episode, she threw a drawer-full of clothes out her window. That's all.
THANK YOU! :D
