From the supplier: South African president F.W. de Klerk startled the world by announcing that his country had developed a nuclear arsenal and then decided to scrap it. The history of South Africa's nuclear program reveals that there are many unanswered questions as the country makes the transition to democracy.

Open Question: Is there a high correlation between personal religiosity and self-control?
The New York Times recently (12/30/2008) published an article on the high correlation between personal religiosity and self-control. Michael McCullough and Brian Willoughby, two psychologists at the University of Miami, published the results of their 8-year study testing the hypothesis that religion gives people internal strength in Psychological Bulletin. McCullough and Willoughby concluded that the "controls" of religious belief typically used to explain religious folk?s emphasis on morality, guilt, fear of punishment, exclusion from a worshiping community do not fully account for their ability to resist temptation. "Religious people scored high in self-control, while spiritual-but-not-religious people tended to score lower." "The self-control effect seems to come from being engaged in religious institutions and behaviors," psychologist Michael McCullough told The New York Times. "Brain-scan studies have shown that when people pray or meditate, there's a lot of activity in two parts of the brain that are important for self-regulation and control of attention and emotion," "The rituals that religions have been encouraging for thousands of years seem to be a kind of anaerobic workout for self-control." The tradition on R&S is to demand evidence and speak highly of science until something is claimed that counters one's own personal biases, so I'll just toss this one out there and let everyone devour the question in their own way. Open Question: How can I help my sister?
My sister had an affair with her pastor for over a year and is in love with him. He is married and is obviously just using her but, while she is not blind to that, can't seem to break herself away. I think she found some strange type of family with this church because I know that deep down she doesn't believe all of this stuff about Jesus - she was never Christian and pretty much against any organized religion - but now she's totally devout (and had an affair and fell madly in love with her married pastor). She does all of the administrative work for this church, writes all of their news bulletins and articles, and she's incredibly talented and brilliant - but they don't even pay her and she's struggling to make ends meet as it is. The man's wife has harassed her through text and verbally - pretty much insinuating that she's a whore trying to break up her happy marriage - all while my sister goes above and beyond to help this *****'s husband keep his church going. I know she's still in love with this POS awful man and he won't even have the decency to just give her the peace of mind so she can move on with her life. She's very lonely and it is very hard to get her to open up to anyone. I think she almost wanted to the other night but I missed her phone call. I don't know how to help her, but I know she is miserable and heartbroken, and alone. =( (more...)

Resolved Question: Are we entering a modern Dark Age, due to ignorance from information overload?
Lot's of people now-a-days (especially young people) are blindly accepting information as FACT based on internet blogs/bulletins etc which may or may not be true. Also, I see a trend where people only skim multiple articles online, and then later I can tell they didn't really learn anything, and sometimes get the story wrong as they tried to read too much too fast - it actually screws people up! Dan in Miami - by ignorance, I mean when people try to take on too much information at once/skim info, they end up with the wrong story as they didn't take the time to fully understand the whole picture - in the end they are still uninformed/ignorant as they get the story wrong. Resolved Question: What IS the Constitution but a Contract for the UNION, presided over by a qualified individual. If that person?
is ineligible, as 0bama admits he is (because he himself admitted he was born with British citizenship on factcheck, thereby not natural born, which is different than being just a US Citizen, it's an exceptional undivided allegiance at birth definition spelled out by the USC)... since the president is ineligible, it nullifies the contract. Any decision, act, treaty he makes is invalid and will be challengd. The Constitution, the "Contract" is null and void, it's all that ties our nation-states together as the "United" States. Any state can secede, and some may without legal consequence. If the contract is void, so is the union, it simply ceases to exist--as unimaginable as that seems, it's just words on paper that tie our states together. Any treaty, debt, owing understanding internationally between any country and the "United" States can be challenged, because its leader is not valid, the Union is not valid. He's vulnerable to blackmail. He can be challenged as "not president" at any turn, and he will be as many are promising, and then all of his records can be subpoenaed in any criminal cases. Here's a real Harvard Constitutional Lawyer who wrote an article in the large newspaper The Philadelphia Bulletin, about the Constitutional Crisis which 0bama imposes on the nation. http://www.thebulletin.us/site/news.cfm?newsid=20210273 He says that if you think 0bama bullying his way into the White House (before he has his secret police and civilian army at his command to control the populous) is the end of the crisis, it's just not true. Yes, 0bama is a fake. That's why he won't release his abysmal transcripts and why he's never written a single scholarly article in his life. The USC DOES preclude dual citizenships... because the only exceptions were spelled out for those US Citizens with dual citizenships at the time of its ratification, being eligible for POTUS. If the exception were not spelled out, there would be vaguery, but it is spelled out. (more...)

Voting Question: What do I do about my friend's flooding of MySpace bulletin board?
Ok, I love my best friend to death. We have been very close for 5 (almost 6) years now. I don't know where I would be without him, even though we've had our fights and plenty of disagreements. Well anyways... This guy was a big, big, big McCain supporter, and prior to the elections he posted several bulletins pressuring readers to vote McCain. Well, when Obama was elected, he has ever since been posting atleast 5 bulletins per day with either Youtube videos (completely biased ones) or segments of other equally biased articles criticising and shooting down Obama. I talked to him about this and while he 'understands my annoyance' he refuses to slow down on the posting on account of his 'defending his rights'. What he doesn't seem to get is that he is truly annoying people. My sister tells me she is maddened by her signing on daily to see several new bulletins from him. Some of his friends talked behind his back about it. I, for one, am extremely annoyed and feel like I am at my wit's end. Also what he doesn't understand is that by doing that he really isn't accomplishing anything. He wont win over new voters by throwing this crap in their faces, and MySpace isn't exactly the place to do rallying. Please help...I also request that you don't make a political post (i.e. regarding the elections). I purely need help with his spamming and what I can do about it. Thanks! (more...)

Resolved Question: Obama wants to tie school funding to youth participation for midddle and high schools; Should this be?
I think community service is admirable but schools should not be penalized for not volunteering. Schools should focus on teaching reading writing, math, geography, history etc. He said he would make federal assistance conditional on school districts establishing service programs and set the goal of 50 hours of service a year for middle and high school students http://bulletin.aarp.org/states/il/articles/obama_outlines_plan_for_national_service.html (more...)

Voting Question: Do you really want to know what is meant by a National Security Force?
http://bulletin.aarp.org/states/il/articles/obama_outlines_plan_for_national_service.html And yes, an electoral landslide is considered to be a mandate. Thank you America! And, BTW, half white. (more...)

Resolved Question: Obama outlines plan for national service ?
Something else to ponder. Why would Senator Obama need to raise a Civilian National Security Force and arm it like our Military? What would be the purpose for this? http://bulletin.aarp.org/states/il/articles/obama_outlines_plan_for_national_service.html "We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded." Peachy that is what I thought. My real question is what would the be used for? And for that matter how would you pay for it? Mavrick if they are not armed how do they become as powerful as the military. All Military power is based on its ability to project fire power (weapons). So I still have a question what will he use it for? (more...)

Resolved Question: Jewish voters....What are your thoughts on the article of Obama and Rashid Khalidi?
Charen: Obama?s Friendship with Khalidi Tuesday, October 28, 2008 By: Mona Charen --------------------------------------... From the Palestinian Authority Daily: ?Twenty-three-year old Ibrahim Abu Jayyab sits by the computer in the Nusairat refugee camp (in the Gaza Strip) trying to call American citizens in order to convince them to vote for the Democratic candidate for president, Barack Obama. . . . ? Like many Palestinians, Abu Jayyab is excited about the prospect of an Obama presidency. (By the way, the Gaza Strip is completely under the control of Hamas. Why then do they persist in speaking of ?refugee camps?? But of course, we know why.) If Abu Jayyab and many others in the Palestinian areas are delighted, why are so many American Jewish voters feeling the same way? One side or the other has the wrong man. Which is it? I?ve heard from some American Jews that they do not believe Obama is sincere in his leftism. They believe/hope that the anti-Israel sentiments and associations of his past were purely opportunistic; that once in the White House he will shed them like yesterday?s fashions. That?s quite a leap of faith. Many politicians have distanced themselves from positions and associations of their youths. But in Obama?s case, he is distancing himself from positions staked out as recently as 2003. As National Review Online has reported, the Los Angeles Times is apparently sitting on a videotape showing Obama?s remarks at a farewell dinner that year for Rashid Khalidi, the one-time PLO spokesman who now heads the Middle East Studies Department at Columbia. (Columbia University?s shame is a subject for another column.) Khalidi is not distancing himself from his past. Consistent with what you?d expect from someone who justified PLO attacks on civilians in Israel and Lebanon from 1976 to 1982, Khalidi routinely refers to Israel as a ?racist? and ?apartheid? state, and professes to believe in a ?one-state? solution to the conflict. Guess which country would have to disappear for that ?one? state to come into existence? The Khalidis and Obamas were good friends. In his capacity as a director of the Woods Fund, Obama in 2001 and 2002 steered $75,000 to the Arab American Action Network, the brainchild of Rashid and Mona Khalidi. According to an L.A. Times account of the dinner, Obama mentioned that he and Michelle had been frequent dinner guests at the Khalidi home (just another guy in the neighborhood?) and that the Khalidis had even baby-sat for the Obama girls. Like William Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, the Khalidis held a fundraiser for Obama in their living room when he unsuccessfully sought a House seat. At the farewell dinner, according to the L.A. Times, Obama apparently related fondly his ?many talks? with the Khalidis. Perhaps that?s where he learned, as he told the Des Moines Register, that ?Nobody is suffering more than the Palestinian people.? Obama told the crowd that those talks with the Khalidis had been ?consistent reminders to me of my own blind spots. . . . It?s for that reason that I?m hoping that, for many years to come, we continue that conversation ? a conversation that is necessary not just around Mona and Rashid?s dinner table? but around ?this entire world.? Even less attention has been paid to the man Obama appointed as his emissary to the Muslim community in the U.S., Mazen Asbahi. Asbahi, it turned out, had ties to the Islamic Society of North America, which in turn was an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation case. The Holy Land Foundation was accused of being a front group for Hamas. When news of these associations became public, Asbahi resigned from the campaign to ?avoid distracting from Barack Obama?s message of change.? And don?t forget hope! Many American Jews preparing to pull the lever for Obama have never heard of Asbahi. But they surely know about Jeremiah Wright. They know that he gave a ?lifetime achievement? award to Louis Farrakhan; that he supported efforts to get U.S. businesses to divest from Israel; that he gave space in the Trinity Church bulletin to Hamas; and that he has accused Israel of ?genocide? against the Palestinians. They are preparing to vote for a man who tamely tolerated all of that (and more) for 20 years. Someone is making a big mistake ? and it isn?t Abu Jayyab. (more...)
