Fela Kuti - Music Is the Weapon
Fela Kuti - Music Is the Weapon Music Is the Weapon may be short, but it's essential viewing for Fela fans. Filmed in 1982, the 53-minute documentary captures the late Nigerian musician/activist at his peak. (There are slight differences between the English and French versions, so it's best to watch both.) For the uninitiated, it's hard to explain--in mere words--how one man could so successfully mate the sexuality of James Brown with the righteous politics of Bob Marley and sinuous sounds of Miles Davis. Fela drew as much inspiration for his "Afro-beat" from Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X as funk, reggae, and jazz. Music Is the Weapon features interviews with Fela and a few of his many wives, along with performances of "ITT," "Army Arrangement," and other anthems. A controversial figure throughout his life, Fela is described as both "superstar" and "man of the people." This short, but potent document ably explores that dichotomy. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Roots Rock Reggae - Inside the Jamaican Music Scene
Roots Rock Reggae - Inside the Jamaican Music Scene Fans of 1970s reggae are sure to rejoice at the chance to hear Jimmy Cliff and Joe Higgs talk about their music, to see hyperkinetic producer-musician Lee "Scratch" Perry at work in his legendary Black Ark studio (with Junior Murvin, the Heptones, and the Upsetters), and to enjoy the lively sounds of the Mighty Diamonds, Ras Michael, and U-Roy in concert. Fans of Jamaica's best-known musical export, Bob Marley and the Wailers, may be a little disappointed, however, because the documentary includes only a couple of brief performance clips--though, granted, even momentary glimpses of Mr. Music at his peak are better than none at all.

This 1977 installment of director Jeremy Marre's 14-part Beats of the Heart series also features early black-and-white footage of Jimmy Cliff and Toots & the Maytals in concert, the Gladiators in the studio, and the Abyssinians, Third World, and Inner Circle in rehearsal. Scenes of Kingston street life are interspersed with the performance footage and interviews to illustrate the narrator's claim that "Reggae music is much more than entertainment in Jamaica today. It's a powerful social force that mirrors the pressures of everyday life, putting them into words and rhythm--describing, revealing, persuading." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Open Question: Do you think marijuana should be legal ? read the history before you ansewer plz, i know its long but its good?
THIS WILL EXPLAIN HOW WE CAN SAVE ON GAS A MAJOR ISSUE NOW, AND WORLD HUNGER CAN STOP AND MEDICINE SHOULD BE MADE AND THE CONFLICT W/ ALCHOL AND TOBACOO COMPANIES, PLZ READ AND REPLY , SERIOUS ANSEWERS , ONLY ANSEWER IF YOU READ , THX READ THIS IF YOU WANT TO KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT WEED!! (i know it?s long but its good information) The Marijuana Conspiracy THE REAL REASON HEMP IS ILLEGAL by Doug Yurchey And I will raise up for them a plant of renown, and they shall be no more consumed with hunger in the land. ? Ezekiel 34/29 The real reason Cannabis has been outlawed has nothing to do with its effects on the mind and body. MARIJUANA is DANGEROUS. Pot is NOT harmful to the human body or mind. Marijuana does NOT pose a threat to the general public. Marijuana is very much a danger to the oil companies, alcohol, tobacco industries and a large number of chemical corporations. Various big businesses, with plenty of dollars and influence, have suppressed the truth from the people. The truth is if marijuana was utilized for its vast array of commercial products, it would create an industrial atomic bomb! Entrepreneurs have not been educated on the product potential of pot. The super rich have conspired to spread misinformation about an extremely versatile plant that, if used properly, would ruin their companies. Where did the word 'marijuana' come from? In the mid 1930s, the M-word was created to tarnish the good image and phenomenal history of the hemp plant...as you will read. The facts cited here, with references, are generally verifiable in the Encyclopedia Britannica which was printed on hemp paper for 150 years: * All schoolbooks were made from hemp or flax paper until the 1880s; Hemp Paper Reconsidered, Jack Frazier, 1974. * It was LEGAL TO PAY TAXES WITH HEMP in America from 1631 until the early 1800s; LA Times, Aug. 12, 1981. * REFUSING TO GROW HEMP in America during the 17th and 18th Centuries WAS AGAINST THE LAW! You could be jailed in Virginia for refusing to grow hemp from 1763 to 1769; Hemp in Colonial Virginia, G. M. Herdon. * George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and other founding fathers GREW HEMP; Washington and Jefferson Diaries. Jefferson smuggled hemp seeds from China to France then to America. * Benjamin Franklin owned one of the first paper mills in America and it processed hemp. Also, the War of 1812 was fought over hemp. Napoleon wanted to cut off Moscow?s export to England; Emperor Wears No Clothes, Jack Herer. * For thousands of years, 90f all ships' sails and rope were made from hemp. The word 'canvas' is Dutch for cannabis; Webster?s New World Dictionary. * 80f all textiles, fabrics, clothes, linen, drapes, bed sheets, etc. were made from hemp until the 1820s with the introduction of the cotton gin. * The first Bibles, maps, charts, Betsy Ross?s flag, the first drafts of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were made from hemp; U.S. Government Archives. * The first crop grown in many states was hemp. 1850 was a peak year for Kentucky producing 40,000 tons. Hemp was the largest cash crop until the 20th Century; State Archives. * Oldest known records of hemp farming go back 5000 years in China, although hemp industrialization probably goes back to ancient Egypt. * Rembrants, Gainsboroughs, Van Goghs as well as most early canvas paintings were principally painted on hemp linen. * In 1916, the U.S. Government predicted that by the 1940s all paper would come from hemp and that no more trees need to be cut down. Government studies report that 1 acre of hemp equals 4.1 acres of trees. Plans were in the works to implement such programs; Department of Agriculture * Quality paints and varnishes were made from hemp seed oil until 1937. 58,000 tons of hemp seeds were used in America for paint products in 1935; Sherman Williams Paint Co. testimony before Congress against the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act. * Henry Ford?s first Model-T was built to run on hemp gasoline and the CAR ITSELF WAS CONTRUCTED FROM HEMP! On his large estate, Ford was photographed among his hemp fields. The car, 'grown from the soil,' had hemp plastic panels whose impact strength was 10 times stronger than steel; Popular Mechanics, 1941. * Hemp called 'Billion Dollar Crop.' It was the first time a cash crop had a business potential to exceed a billion dollars; Popular Mechanics, Feb., 1938. * Mechanical Engineering Magazine (Feb. 1938) published an article entitled 'The Most Profitable and Desirable Crop that Can be Grown.' It stated that if hemp was cultivated using 20th Century technology, it would be the single largest agricultural crop in the U.S. and the rest of the world. The following information comes directly from the United States Department of Agriculture?s 1942 14-minute film encouraging and instructing 'patriotic American farmers' to grow 350,000 acres of hemp each year for (more...)

Open Question: can you help me edit this report (its short) ?
World War II World War II was a global military conflict which involved a majority of the world?s nations. Over 70 million people, the majority of them civilians, were killed, making it the deadliest conflict in history. World War II began on September 1, 1939 and ended on September 2, 1945. James was drafted in the military during WWII, at the time he was living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. During his first days in the service he and his wife moved to Washington (where he was stationed before going overseas). Before going overseas he was also stationed in California, North Carolina, and New Jersey. He got through the tough training experience with the help of his wife. When James got overseas he was stationed in England, France, and Germany. James was an Instrument cpl. During his time in World War II he seen a lot of combat, but there wasn?t many casualties in his unit. Going to Dachau, a Nazi German concentration camp, was his hardest experience and he never talked about it. Dachau opened in March 1933, it was the first regular concentration camp established by the coalition government of National Socialist .During the war him and the whole battalion received letters of commendation and preside. During the war James mostly wrote letters to keep in touch with his wife and son, and he didn?t see his son until he was almost two years old. Unless there was something to commandere, they ate mostly C-Rations - they were always on the move. The C-Ration was an individual canned, pre-cooked or prepared wet ration intended to be issued to U.S. military land forces when fresh food (A-Ration) or packaged unprepared food (B-Ration) prepared in mess halls or field kitchens was impractical or not available and when a survival ration (K-ration or D-ration) was insufficient. They had very little supplies and it was hard to stay clean and dry. For good luck James would carry a picture of his wife and his son. James and the other soldiers entertained themselves by playing pranks, telling jokes, and drinking rare bottles of wine. James also loved the ?Sad Sack? cartoons and talked about bathing in his helmet. Okay so when i say wife and son so should Wife and Son be capitalize? And how should i end this? It's an interview of someone who was in WWII. What other info can i add in about World War II thats fits in with the interview? (more...)

The nineteenth century could be called the railroad era. And on May 10, 1869, the first transcontinental railroad was completed, opening a nationwide transportation network that had a tremendous impact on business, agriculture, and labor. Could you explain the impact of the railroads on other businesses and why the government made attempts to regulate the railroads. (more...)

Open Question: How did the people of the United States allow a "progressive" (socialist) to get elected to the presidency?
Did we have a liberal insurgency at the national convention? I'm not a collectivist, and out of the whole 20 people I know, there is only 1 that would stand up and say that she is a died in the wool State-ist, and that all people should have their rights given to them from a government. Is this a city ideals versus country ideals? Are they still teaching history in schools? You may cringe at "socialist" but what else would you call it when government owns all the means of production? I know... McCain was all for the bailout too. Open Question: What ailments of free society does Ranil Wickremesinghe hold himself accountable for?
http://www.lankadissent.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3121:rajapaksa-regime-killed-lasantha-ranil&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=50 The biggest ailments (incidentally punishable offenses) that I see are the strengthening of a terrorist organization, corrupting a large segment of politics, spouting a venemous diatribe meant only to disenfranchise the public from legitimate political process, the attempt to overturn or subvert sitting government to protect his personal intrests. I do not expect Mr. Wickremesinghe to gain voice for the people, for the people will choose different representation more in lines with their current and future aspirations than in the criminal folly of the past. Accusations lobbed at the "current regime" certainly are rooted in the past regime. Mr Wickremesinghe (and those of his ilk) utilize tactics of using the press as attack vehicles that do not practise responsible, balanced journalism of which the result is the likes of attacks at Shakthi/Sirasana and the slaying of a newsman. there are legitimate concerns at home and abroad that your brand of political posturing is contributing to violence in society and because we as a nation have decided that we do not desire violence againt society based on anyone's political aspirations-I will ask society to consider a voice that has more legitimate goals than 1) contributing and furthering causes of seperatism, terrorism and marginalization 2) to view the political history of those making these claims 3) to watch for further manipulations against the public trust 4) choose not to participate in violent and disruptive acts in society and against society. To that end I ask Ambassador Blake to send strong directive along with scholarship to these media acolytes that the power of the press is not to instigate but to report http://www.dailynews.lk/2009/01/08/news15.asp I would further request that items regarding Sources and Uses of Funds for USAID programs including information on balance of funds be released so that further cooperation can be built between Central Government, Regional Government and Donor Reps as to best uses for funds on balance and future balances including full accounting as part of Best Practices. http://www.dailynews.lk/2009/01/08/news13.asp Consideration of assured, self-sustainability is a great yardstick to use for large projects as well as for small. http://www.dailynews.lk/2009/01/08/news13.asp Legitimate representative partnerships with affected communities is key http://www.peacemuslims.org/_Expelled_Northern_Muslims__issue_a_national_priority_,_Dr._Hasbullah-20-886.html And then of course there is the utter hilarity and/or the lack of journalistic prudence in "news stories" such as this that are follies from recent political joiners in attempts to further discredit the sitting government. Three Dissanayake brothers left the UNP last week to join SLFP http://www.dailynews.lk/2009/01/08/pol05.asp (He said he is happy over the achievements of our Security Forces. "Premadasa was finally assassinated by the LTTE. Chandrika had a narrow escape. If Prabhakaran is not willing to share power, then terrorism ought to be crushed," he said.) That reporter Asela was also present on 8/27 in the company of none other than Wickremesinghe whose political acolyte is Dissanayake, who is quoted as saying such political bombasments as stated above. Rohitha, who has his own dream of being President, is also very chummy with this Asela. Asela is the tool of the former administration. Rohitha has a healthy fright of this guy. My caution to all is that there is no "overnight" transformations and there is a big difference between politicians and leaders. Be smart and play fair. Do your research; as one thing is for sure, this political jokership is destructive and deathly. http://www.island.lk/2009/01/08/news4.html (more...)

Open Question: Black History Month is Coming Up?
Black History Month is coming up, and i've been thinking. People always preach that race shouldn't matter, but if that is so true, then why is Black History Month a big deal? Don't you consider it racist that they are famous just because you are black. (not trying to say none of the where important, but it seems as though if a white person did the exact same accomplishment, they wouldn't be famous.) not trying to be racist here, so dont flame me for asking this type of question. I always hear all this crap about how you shouldn't be racist (which im not) I just think its annoying how we have to devote a whole month to people who we would of never heard of if they where white. I'm not saying that none of black people accomplishments should be praised, because there are still a good amount that I admire, not because they where black, but because they where pionerrs in government, the arts, and technology.
