Nine Hundred Nights - Big Brother and the Holding Co. with Janis Joplin
Nine Hundred Nights - Big Brother and the Holding Co. with Janis Joplin This document, devoted to the two-plus years ('66-'68) that Janis Joplin spent as a member of San Francisco's Big Brother and the Holding Company, offers ample material to support the view that Joplin, who died in 1970 at age 27, was a great singer and an enduring inspiration. On the other hand, it probably won't dissuade those who agree with Pete Townshend of the Who (one of the stars of the '67 Monterey Pop Festival, along with Joplin and Jimi Hendrix), who has called her "just an ugly, hard-drinking, screaming woman." with a band that was "just about the worst f***ing band I'd heard." In addition to a 60-minute documentary that features performance clips, contemporary interviews with the Holding Company and various others, in-studio footage and so on, the DVD offers four complete, decent-sounding filmed performances (including "Ball and Chain" from Monterey, as well as "Piece of My Heart") and one audio-only tune. It's not an especially pretty story--the band was, in fact, rather lame, and Joplin's departure, while perhaps inevitable, wasn't real popular--but it deserves to be told, and Nine Hundred Nights does a fine job of it. --Sam Graham

FDR: The First Hundred Days (Critical Issue)
FDR: The First Hundred Days (Critical Issue)
The Hundred Days, Franklin Roosevelt’s first fifteen weeks in office, have become the stuff of legend, a mythic yardstick against which every subsequent American president has felt obliged to measure himself. The renowned historian Anthony J. Badger cuts through decades of politicized history to provide a succinct, balanced, and timely reminder that Roosevelt’s accomplishment was above all else an exercise in exceptional political craftsmanship. Declaring that Americans had “nothing to fear but fear itself,” Roosevelt entered the White House in 1933 confronting 25 percent unemployment, bank closings, and a nationwide crisis in confidence. From March 9 to June 16, FDR sent Congress a record number of bills, all of which passed easily. From legalizing the sale of beer to providing mortgage relief to millions of Americans, Roosevelt launched the New Deal that conservatives have been working to roll back ever since. Badger emphasizes Roosevelt’s political gifts even as the president and his brain trust of advisers, guided by principles, largely felt their way toward solutions to the nation’s manifold problems. Reintroducing the contingency that marked those fateful days, Badger humanizes Roosevelt and suggests a far more useful yardstick for future presidents: the politics of the possible under the guidance of principle.

Eternity in Their Hearts: Startling Evidence of Belief in the One True God in Hundreds of Cultures Throughout the World
Eternity in Their Hearts: Startling Evidence of Belief in the One True God in Hundreds of Cultures Throughout the World
Has the God who prepared the gospel for all peoples also prepared all peoples for the gospel? Don Richardson, author of best-selling Peace Child, demonstrates through compelling stories from many different cultures how the concept of a supreme God has existed for centuries in hundreds of cultures throughout the world. From deep in the jungles of Burma to a majestic fortress in Peru and in countless other civilizations, people have exhibited in their histories terms and concepts that have prepared them for the gospel. Eternity in Their Hearts shows how God uses redemptive analogies to bring all men to Himself, bearing out the truth from Ecclesiastes that God “has also set eternity in the hearts of men.”

Voting Question: Do you know of a really good biography for the following people?
I am 14, and I want some biographies on these people. I was wondering if any of u knew of good biographies for someone 14-18 that are about: -Franklin Roosevelt -Woodrow Wilson My teacher told me a really good FDR biography was "The Lion and the Fox" and the woman at Border's told me that the biography that goes something like "Franklin Roosevelt: The first Hundred Days" is supposed to be really good. Neither could give me any good ones on Woodrow Wilson though, so I'm really trying to find biographies on him. Please just let me know, thanks. Happy New Year!!! (more...)

Resolved Question: Would you take advice from someone who...?
...Believes that all non-violent drug offenders, this includes dealers and such, should be released from prison? ...own mother called him a failure at everything and quit and could not cut it in college? ...flunked out and quit from two colleges? ...was a construction worker and a bartender before going on the radio? ...who after being turned down time and time again only got his first job in radio only after a talk show host committed suicide? ...who has no experience in politics...or government service whatsoever? ...who have no scientific education or experience? This my friends is the cumulative biography of Rush Limbaugh, Niel Boortz and Sean Hannity. These are the ones that tell you Global Warning is a joke...that tell you that Government should not create jobs, even though we pay taxes...and for what???? These are the ones that have called our now President elect a "Thug"! These are the ones that tell you that the concept of "Spreading the wealth" is un-American but that spending hundreds of millions of dollars in the Middle East is not throwing our wealth away! IS THIS REALLY WHO ANY AMERICAN SHOULD TAKE ADVICE FROM ON SUCH IMPORTANT ISSUES? And before any of you attempt to say that all of this is not true...do the obvious.....RESEARCH FIRST! This is an honest attempt to expose how lazy we as Americans have become in thinking merely because someone is on the air waves does make everything, much less anything true! (more...)
