Absence of Malice
Absence of Malice The ethics of the press are roundly slapped around in an entertaining if not always believable drama from director Sydney Pollack. Sally Field is the Miami reporter who is set up to leak information on a dead-end murder investigation. A sneaky government official (a marvelous, rubber-band-spinning Bob Balaban) provides the information that implies liquor distributor Paul Newman is under investigation. When the story runs, it uncorks a legal quagmire that puts the spotlight on presumably innocent lives. As the lawyers explain, the paper's story is accurate, even though it may be untrue. The details of the story are sharply drawn by first-time screenwriter and former reporter Kurt Luedtke (who later went on to win an Oscar scripting Pollack's Out of Africa); the film could be used in a Media Ethics 101 class. Newman secretly counterattacks in a clever plot to derail the process that quickly encompasses his jittery friend (Oscar nominee Melinda Dillon). Field's continuing ethical gaps--including falling in love with her subject--stretch the film's credibility. Then again, who wouldn't fall for Paul Newman in the Florida sun? --Doug Thomas

True Evil: A Novel
True Evil: A Novel "If you wanted to kill your spouse and get away with it, you had to do something truly ingenious: something that wouldn't even be perceived as murder. And that was the service that Andrew Rusk had found a way to provide. Like any quality product, it did not come cheap. Nor did it come quickly. And perhaps most important of all, it was not for those with weak constitutions. Demand was high, of course, but few people were truly suitable clients. It took a deep-rooted hatred to watch your spouse die in agony, knowing that you had brought about that pain. But on the other hand, some people bore up remarkably well."

With these words, New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles returns to his trademark Southern milieu in this terrifying thriller, an unnerving tale of evil lurking beneath the veneer of idyllic suburban life. Brimming with the masterful suspense and intense psychological drama that made Turning Angel, Blood Memory, and The Quiet Game bestsellers, True Evil tells the chilling story of a divorce attorney who may be orchestrating the deaths of his clients' spouses, bringing new meaning to the phrase "'til death do us part."

Dr. Chris Shepard is thirty-six years old, newly married, and well on his way to a perfect life. Or so he believes. But that future is forever cast into doubt the day Special Agent Alexandra Morse walks into his office and drops a bombshell: Dr. Shepard's beautiful new wife is plotting his murder. Shepard is so shocked that he almost throws Agent Morse out of his office. Yet once he is alone, doubt begins to gnaw at him. Paranoia magnifies the small cracks in his marital relationship, and soon he can have no peace unless he knows the truth. When Agent Morse reappears, Chris agrees to act as bait to help her unravel the divorce lawyer's scheme, which may already have cost nine unsuspecting spouses their lives.

At the center of the mystery lies a maddeningly simple question: If these people really were murdered, why can't the FBI prove it? Rigorous autopsies have uncovered no forensic evidence of foul play, and the police believe no crimes have occurred. As Dr. Shepard and Agent Morse struggle against an invisible adversary, Shepard realizes that he's working with a desperate woman. The reason: the killer's last known victim was Alex Morse's sister, who from her deathbed accused her husband of murder and extracted a vow that Alex save her ten-year-old nephew from his father. This has driven Alex to risk both her life and her career to fulfill that vow. But Chris Shepard soon feels desperation of his own. As he probes his wife's hidden past, he is confronted by the probability that the woman he loves wants him dead.

He has adopted her son and given her everything he has to give, and yet somewhere out there, a killer with the brilliance to outwit the top forensic scientists in the world is closing in on him.

Blowout (Coulter, Catherine)
Blowout (Coulter, Catherine) FBI agents Dillon Savich and Lacey Sherlock return in a dazzling new thriller. Blowout takes excitement to an all-time high level.

Married FBI agents Savich and Sherlock work and play hard: devoted to their jobs, their son, and each other, they approach each new case with gusto, and appreciate every moment of downtime they can grab. But a long weekend getaway at a secluded cabin in the Pennsylvania woods is cut short when the agents are summoned back to Washington, where a nightmare awaits them: The night before the Supreme Court is to hear opening arguments in a highly controversial death-penalty case, a prominent judge is murdered in the court's third-floor library. Savich and Sherlock are charged with heading the investigation but when the killings continue, each targeting another brilliant, successful Washington power broker, the agents are faced with their most baffling and shocking case of their lives.

As dramatic and suspenseful as anything she's ever written, Blowout is Catherine Coulter at the very height of her storytelling powers.

Resolved Question: Has hope and change been REPLACED BY Pay to Play?
Farewell, Hope and Change. Hello, Pay To Play. Wonder if Bill Richardson will translate this mess into Spanish for us, too: A federal grand jury is investigating whether a financial firm improperly won more than $1.4 million in work for the state of New Mexico shortly after making contributions to political action committees of Gov. Bill Richardson (D). The probe focuses on whether the governor?s office urged a state agency to hire CDR Financial Products. The probe is in a highly active stage at a time when President-elect Barack Obama has chosen Richardson as his nominee for secretary of commerce, according to two sources familiar with the investigation. The grand jury in Albuquerque is expected to hear testimony today from several key witnesses, including officials at Richard?s political action committees and bankers at J.P. Morgan who worked with CDR on the state?s investments. The inquiry is part of a long-running nationwide investigation into ?pay-to-play? practices in local government bond markets. In other cities, federal investigators are questioning whether financial firms have lavished politicians with money and gifts in exchange for fee-paying work advising municipal and local governments on investments. Authorities indicted the mayor of Birmingham, Ala., this month on charges of taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts and loans from a firm that led the city into toxic investments and massive bankruptcy. http://michellemalkin.com/2008/12/16/bill-richardsons-own-pay-to-play-scandal/ (more...)

Resolved Question: Is it time to scrap the Federal Elections Commission.?
The 2008 General Election and its Primaries showed with out fail the totally inept ability, this paper charade agency could not do it's job. They were overwhelmed. Obama and company used the Internet to run there scam on, Knowing the FEC had no resources or manpower to cross check and run down the 100's of thousands of phony names and addresses. Then they took the filters off the credit card donations so international loading of funds could be dumped into the Obama campaign without fear of reprisal, This was the last straw, The archaic method of elections regulating is joke, New technology and funding' for investigators is needed, If you want your elections kept clean, you have to have the people in place to do there job, What you think America, (more...)

Resolved Question: Why Why did he have to die?
Randolph Frederick Pausch[2] (October 23, 1960 ? July 25, 2008) was an American professor of computer science, human-computer interaction and design at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Pausch received his bachelor's degree in computer science from Brown University in 1982 and his PhD in computer science from Carnegie Mellon in August 1988. Pausch later became an associate professor at the University of Virginia, before working at Carnegie Mellon as an associate professor. He gave his "The Last Lecture" speech on September 18, 2007 at Carnegie Mellon. Pausch conceived the lecture after he learned that his previously known pancreatic cancer was terminal.[3] The talk was modeled after an ongoing series of lectures where top academics are asked to think deeply about what matters to them, and then give a hypothetical "final talk", with a topic such as "what wisdom would you try to impart to the world if you knew it was your last chance?" The talk was later released as a book called The Last Lecture, which became a New York Times best-seller. Early life Pausch was born at Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up in Columbia, Maryland.[2] After graduating from Oakland Mills High School in Columbia, Pausch received his bachelor's degree in computer science from Brown University in May 1982 and his Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University in August 1988.[4] While completing his doctoral studies, Pausch was briefly employed at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and Adobe Systems.[5] ] Career Pausch was an assistant and associate professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Virginia's School of Engineering and Applied Science from 1988 until 1997. While there, he completed sabbaticals at Walt Disney Imagineering and Electronic Arts (EA). In 1997, Pausch became Associate Professor of Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, and Design, at Carnegie Mellon University. He was a co-founder in 1998, along with Don Marinelli, of CMU's Entertainment Technology Center (ETC), and he started the Building Virtual Worlds[6] course at CMU and taught it for 10 years. He consulted with Google on user interface design and also consulted with PARC, Imagineering, and Media Metrix.[5] Pausch is also the founder of the Alice software project.[7] He was a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator and a Lilly Foundation Teaching Fellow.[8] Pausch was the author or co-author of five books and over 70 articles. He also received two awards from ACM in 2007 for his achievements in computing education: the Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award and the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education Award for Outstanding Contributions to Computer Science Education.[9] He was also inducted as a Fellow of the ACM in 2007. The Pittsburgh City Council declared November 19, 2007 to be "Dr. Randy Pausch Day".[10] In May 2008, Pausch was listed by Time as one of the World's Top-100 Most Influential People.[1] Cancer The poster for Pausch's "The Last Lecture"Pausch was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer[3][11] and underwent a Whipple procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy) on September 19, 2006 in an unsuccessful attempt to halt his pancreatic cancer.[12] He was told in August 2007 to expect a remaining three to six months of good health. He soon moved his family to Chesapeake, Virginia, a suburb near Norfolk, to be close to his wife's family. On March 13, 2008, Pausch advocated for greater federal funding for pancreatic cancer before the United States Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies.[13] In the week prior to this, he had been hospitalized in order to have needle aspiration of pleural effusion in his right lung.[14] On May 2, a Positron emission tomography (PET) scan showed that he had very tiny (5 millimetres (0.20 in) or less) metastasis in his lungs and some lymph nodes in his chest. He also had some metastases in his peritoneal and retroperitoneal cavities. On June 26, 2008, Pausch indicated that he was considering stopping further chemotherapy because of the potential adverse side effects. He was, however, considering some immuno-therapy-based approaches.[15] On July 24, on behalf of Pausch, a friend anonymously posted a message on Pausch's webpage stating that a biopsy had indicated that the cancer had progressed further than what was expected from recent PET scans and that Pausch had "taken a step down" and was "much sicker than he had been". The friend also stated that Pausch had then enrolled in a hospice program designed to provide palliative care to those at the end of life.[15] Wikinews has related news: "Last Lecture" Professor Randy Pausch dies at age 47 Pausch died from pancreatic cancer at his family's home in Chesapeake, Virginia on July 25, 2008, having moved there so that his wife and children would be near family after his death. Resolved Question: GOP Internet Stategist Dies in Plane Crash Before Testimony: Was this just a "Coincidence" OR...?
Republican IT Guru Dies In Plane Crash Dec. 23, 2008 (CBS/AP) Federal investigators are looking into a small plane crash in Ohio which claimed the life of its pilot, a Republican media consultant who was instrumental in the presidential and gubernatorial campaigns of three members of the Bush Family. Michael Connell,45, of Akron died Friday when his plane crashed near a vacant house in Uniontown while attempting to land at nearby Akron-Canton Airport. But the fatal accident is also raising questions about Connell and his work for key political figures and lobbyists, which has targeted him in investigations over missing White House e-mails and a lawsuit alleging electronic voting fraud. ******** Republican IT Specialist Dies in Plane Crash A top Republican internet strategist who was set to testify in a case alleging election tampering in 2004 in Ohio has died in a plane crash. Mike Connell was the chief IT consultant to Karl Rove and created websites for the Bush and McCain electoral campaigns. He also set up the official Ohio state election website reporting the 2004 presidential election returns. Connell was reportedly an experienced pilot. He died instantly Friday night when his private plane crashed in a residential neighborhood near Akron, Ohio. Michael Connell was deposed one day before the election this year by attorneys Cliff Arnebeck and Bob Fitrakis about his actions during the 2004 vote count and his access to Karl Rove?s email files and how they went missing. http://www.democracynow.org/2008/12/22/republican_it_specialist_dies_in_plane MARK CRISPIN MILLER: "Well, I cannot assert with perfect confidence that this was no accident, but I will say that the circumstances are so suspicious and so convenient for Rove and the White House that I think we?re obliged to investigate this thing very, very thoroughly. And that means, first of all, taking a close look at some of the stories that were immediately circulated to account for what happened, that it was bad weather. That was the line they used when Wellstone?s plane went down. There had been bad weather, but it had passed two hours before. And this comes from a woman at the airport information desk in Akron. We?re told that his plane was running out of gas, which is a little bit odd for a highly experienced pilot like Connell, but apparently, when the plane went down, there was an explosion, a fireball that actually charred and pocked some of the house fronts in the neighborhood......all these people were saying Rove is making threats, the White House is very worried.." Resolved Question: Are federal investigators over Wall Street rip-offs using PORN at their work desks instead?
Investigators uncovered evidence that within the Republican lead agency, the SEC, an employee repeatedly and flagrantly used Commission resources, including Commission Internet access, e-mail, telephone and printer, in support of his private photography business for several years. There were attempts to access Internet websites classified as containing pornography, resulting in hundreds of access denials. The OIG investigation also disclosed that this employee successfully bypassed the Commission?s Internet filter by using a flash drive. The IG?s office recommended "disciplinary action up to and including dismissal." In turn, the report notes, "management suspended the employee from duty and pay for nine calendar days." Is this why all the rip offs happened, including the $800 billion bailout and the SEC failure?despite detailed tips?to catch Bernie Madoff in what appears to be the biggest Ponzi scheme in our nation?s history? Has this claim been verified, does anyone know? (more...)

DETROIT ? A former Coast Guard petty officer has pleaded guilty to extorting $35,000 from a Detroit-area illegal immigrant who was trying to avoid deportation. The European immigrant lived in the same Macomb neighborhood as Benjamin Bostic. Authorities say the 36-year-old Bostic promised he could change records in exchange for money. When Bostic demanded more money in 2007, the immigrant went to investigators. The evidence included a series of recorded phone calls. Bostic pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court and faces up to three years in prison. He was discharged from the Coast Guard in October.
