60 Minutes - 6% (May 13, 2007)

Airdate: 05/13/07 The 6 percent sales commission has always been sacrosanct for realtors -- adding up to $60 billion in commissions this year. Much to traditional realtors' dismay, change is coming. Online real estate discounters such as Redfin have moved in, charging significantly less for helping people buy and sell their homes, and even offering rebates. While some realtors are fighting back with all they've got, others have joined the competition. Lesley Stahl reports.

2008 Plum Book - the United States Government Policy and Supporting Positions Book with Civil Service Job Listings for Presidentially Appointed Positions in the Obama Administration (Ringbound)

This ringbound book provides a complete reproduction of a major federal document: the highly anticipated 2008 Plum Book, listing over 7,000 federal civil service jobs with the incoming Obama administration. The printed copy of this book currently sells for $38.00 from the GPO, so this edition provides a significant cost savings! This brand-new edition was just released in November 2008, after the election of Barack Obama. Every four years, just after the Presidential election, the United States Government Policy and Supporting Positions, commonly known as the Plum Book, is published, alternately, by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Following are the major categories of positions listed: Executive Schedule and salary-equivalent positions paid at the rates established for levels I through V of the Executive Schedule; Senior Executive Service (SES) General positions; Senior Foreign Service positions; Schedule C positions excepted from the competitive service by the President, or by the Director, Office of Personnel Management, because of the confidential or policy-determining nature of the position duties; and other positions at the GS 14 and above level excepted from the competitive civil service by law because of the confidential or policy-determining nature of the position duties. Additional information on the positions listed and the Federal salary schedules under which they are paid is provided in the appendices. Codes and acronyms used in the publication are listed. This publication contains data (as of September 1, 2008) over 7,000 Federal civil service leadership and support positions in the legislative and executive branches of the Federal Government that may be subject to noncompetitive appointment (e.g., positions such as agency heads and their immediate subordinates, policy executives and advisors, and aides who report to these officials). The duties of many such positions may involve advocacy of Administration policies and programs and the incumbents usually have a close and confidential working relationship with the agency head or other key officials. Our news and educational titles are privately compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work and educational tool.

Open Question: Help! My friend crashed my car. I need help with my insurance and a repair PROBLEM!?
So about a month ago I let my friend drive my car. (04' Volvo S60R) We hit a small rock which we basically drove over. The car rides very low to the ground. We just kept driving because the car seemed fine. We stopped at my other friends house because it started overheating and saw that damages didn't really look that bad except coolant dripping.
My car was towed to a volvo dealership at my request after I spoke with MY insurance company. His won't pay because the car is insured not the driver.
Two adjustes looked at my car and estimated $7,500. I called spoke to the man handling my car at the body shop and stated my concern for engine and drivetrain damage. I think I mentioned it to the insurance too. They really didn't seem to think there was any damage there. Two weeks later i get a call and they find another $2,200 in damage. The insurance already has sent me those checks and my car isn't finished yet. (not cashed yet)
Now the good stuff:
I get a call from the Ins. Co. and am told my car will be ready to pick up wed. jan 7th. I'm supposed to be picking up a car with 10k in damages. BUT, on the 6th i get another call saying my car was ready until they turned it on finding that there might be some engine damage. they think the cylinder head is warped. estimated another 3 to 4k for this.
my insurance called me today and said that my car is totaled because the repairs wil be more than the value. However he also said that they ARE NOT going to total it regardless of what it costs because they already have repaired most of the vehicle.
my ins. co. is insisting on opening the motor and trying to recondition the internals. I called the dealership and haulted the repair. this car is a high performance vehicle. I don't want my engine opened and played with by some guy in the service department, let alone from having the factory seal broken at all.
i guess i have to get a lawyer because i am going to get back a totaled vehicle that isn't labeled that. a car fax report will show a list of things done to it making it worthless. probably 14k+ in repairs
my girlfriends father runs the body shop at this dealership but won't touch my car (mutual). he's seen all the work and damage and called me today to tell me that i should fight my insurance. he said the car is worthless for resale.
What do I do? Do I get a lawyer? Is there a way to get my friend's insurance to pay? Will the accident be listed as at-fault even though I wasn't driving? My driving record? What about depreciation value? (I live in CT)
I don't want my car back now after this.
I have to suffer the consequences of the adjusters negligence to listen to my concern for engine damage? It should have been totaled, but because of there lack of skill and assessing repairs incrementally they want me to take back a car that was literally pieced back together.

Open Question: What are my chances at getting accepted to UNC Chapel Hill?
I am a high school senior in-state and I REALLY want to go to UNC.
I've already applied so here it goes...
I am an African American female and I have a 4.215 weighted GPA (3.678 unweighted). I... let's just say didn't do to well on my SAT's, highest score being 1070 (1600)/ 1680 (2400). I have taken 4 AP classes at my high school and made no worse than a B in those classes. I am the President of the North Carolina Student Academy of Science, President of People Eat Chicken A lot (student initiated), Clubs Editor of Yearbook, member of Spanish club (and other clubs .. the list could go on). For the past two summers I have conducted science research and composed a papers at NCSU. I have won various awards from competitions and received state recognition.
Unfortunately I did not do much (actually very little) community service in high school.
My essays were good (in my opinion). I had got a few people to read them :)
My recommendation was of my professor that I worked under when I researched...
I've been reading other people's questions and the answers they have received and all sound great! I just feel my circumstances are a little different.
I already know the stats (i've been doing all the research trying to answer the question myself). Just wondering what are your instincts?
oh yeah, and I'm a member of Science National Honor Society and I was recently made an honorary student member of the American Assoication for the Advancement of Science.

Resolved Question: Is there spyware on my PC?
This is kinda long so please bare with me.
Here's some history on what's been happening in my inbox lately. I've been receiving e-mails from a phony company lately. The e-mails don't have an "unsubscribe" button but they do provide an e-mail address. Every time I send them an e-mail asking them to take me off their mailing list I get another one from a different e-mail address. I can tell it's them because the e-mails always have the same format. I've sent every one of the e-mails to the spam folder but because it comes from different addresses, I still get them.
So last night I downloaded Microsoft Office directly off Microsoft's website and a few minutes later I have 2 e-mails from this phony company that say this:

But here's the scary part....I tried to post this exact same question last night on Y!A and when I hit "submit", it took me to some phony security page I'd never seen before.
I'm actually kinda scared. How did they know I downloaded microsoft and was that just a fluke that happened last night while posting this question? Also, this morning I had 6 e-mails from them saying I'd won something from Microsoft.
Any help would be appreciated.
"GVR" What a dumb answer
"Remote44" I am well aware that it is a fraudulent company/e-mail....that's not the issue. Thanks though.

Resolved Question: Please help w/ matching accounting terms with their definitions.....?
In reconciling the bank account of Lane Company Ltd., the accountant had to deal with the following sin items:
1. Outstanding checks.
2. Bank service charges.
3. Check No. 502 was issued in the correct amount of $350 and paid by the bank in that amount but had been incorrectly recorded in Lane Company Ltd.'s accounting records as $530.
4. Collection by bank of note receivable left with bank by Lane Company Ltd. for collection and credited to Lane Company's account.
5. Customers' checks deposited by Lane Company Ltd. but returned by bank marked "NSF."
6. Deposit in transit.
Classify each of the above six items under one of the following headings:
a) an addition to the balance per the bank statement
b) a deduction from the balance per the bank statement
c) an addition to the balance per the depositor's records
d) a deduction from the balance per the depositor's records.
Question #2:
Listed below are errors or problems that might occur in the processing of cash transactions. Also shown is a separate list of internal control procedures.
a) The bookkeeper of Center Hardware frequently has trouble in getting the bank reconciliation to balance. If the book balance is more than the bank balance, the bookkeeper writes a check payable to Cash and cashes it. If the book balance is less than the bank balance, the bookkeeper makes an accounting entry debiting Cash and crediting Cash Over and Short.
b) In serving customers who do not appear to be attentive, a salesclerk often rings up a sale at less than the actual sales amount and then removes the additional cash collected from the customer.
c) Without fear of detection, the cashier sometimes removes cash forwarded to him from the mailroom or the sales department instead of depositing these receipts in the company's bank account.
d) CJ Spectra, who has prepared bank reconciliations for Brandy's Pub Ltd. for several years has noticed that some checks issued by the company are never presented for payment. Spectra, therefore, has formed the habit of dropping any checks outstanding for more than six months from the outstanding checks list and removing a corresponding amount of cash from the cash receipts. These actions taken together have left the ledger account for cash in agreement with the adjusted bank balance and have enriched Spectra substantially.
e) All the cash receipts from Monday through Thursday were lost in a burglary on Thursday night.
f) The official designated to sign checks is able to steal blank checks and issue them for unauthorized purposes without fear of detection.
g) The monthly bank reconciliation continually shows a difference between the adjusted bank balance and the adjusted book balance because the cashier regularly deposits actual cash receipts, but the debits to the Cash account reflects cash register readings that differ by the amount of errors in making change in cash sales transactions.
Internal Control Proceedures:
1-Periodic reconciliation of bank statements to accounting records
2-Use of Cash Over and Short account
3-Adequate subdivision of duties
4-Use of prenumbered sales tickets
5-Depositing each day's cash receipts intact in the bank
6-Use of electronic cash registers equipped with optical scanners to read magnetically coded labels on merchandise
7-Immediate prepareation of a control listing when cash is received, and the comparison of this listing to bank deposits
8-Cancellation of paid invoices at the time of signing the checks
9-Requirement that invoices be initialled as advance authorization of every cash disbursement
10. None of the above control procedures can effectively prevent this type of error or problem from occurring.
You can just answer it like: a) #1, etc
Please help, the questions may seem long, but the answers are very short.
Thx in advanced!!

Open Question: Didn't Register With Selective Service?
My grandpa and i had a conversation about his friend not signing up for the selected service agreement. What's the deal with that? I read the entire terms and what not of the selected service agreement. If your 21 and haven't signed up for it (obviously illegal), like my friend hasn't done yet apparently, then you decide to apply for it 3 years later after 18 (21), what happens? can you get in trouble for applying later? I know if you dont apply before 26 you dont get federal jobs or aid and what not unless you prove that it was unintentional and un knowing.... so my friend and my gramps have been wondering about this today. i am registered so i have no idea what could happen to him if he decides to sign up now? Will federal jobs do a check and see if you are a part of the list? If your not part of the list and they do do a check, what will the employer do? will they report you? or what? we are all curious here. thanks
