Roger Waters - The Wall (Live in Berlin)
Roger Waters - The Wall (Live in Berlin) The Wall (Live in Berlin) seemed uninspired and gimmicky in 1990 but looks and sounds terrifically compelling on DVD, thanks to its vivid image quality and greatly improved audio mixes. The freshly mineswept Potsdamer platz--a once-thriving plaza destroyed by Allied bombing in 1943--proved the perfect place to mark the opening of the Berlin Wall with an all-star production of Pink Floyd's magnum opus: a Wall for a wall. An unlikely assemblage of musicians augments Roger Waters's impressive house band (led by guitarist Rick DiFonzo and organ wizard Nick Glennie-Smith), with everyone from the Scorpions to Joni Mitchell to the Military Orchestra of the Soviet Army getting in on the rock-opera action. Cyndi Lauper, Bryan Adams, James Galway, Thomas Dolby, and Albert Finney all turn in tasty cameos, while Sinead O'Connor looks unaccountably aloof in "Mother." The documentary is thorough and juicy, and producer Tony Hollingsworth offers an above-par essay in the booklet. --Michael Mikesell

The Doors - Live in Europe 1968
The Doors - Live in Europe 1968 For Doors completists only, this shapeless gathering of rare film clips of the band performing in Europe is hampered by the same old, frustrating problems with attempting to convey, through lousy camera work, the band's power as a live act. The packaging tells us the Doors swept through London, Stockholm, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam during a 1968 tour documented here, but there's no way to appreciate that save for a random clip or two of Jim Morrison milling about outside concert venues, talking with fans. Otherwise, we see the same sort of obfuscating on-stage close-ups of Morrison you can see in any footage of a Doors gig, stumbling around, crooning, and reciting poetry to minimalist accompaniment by Ray Manzarek on keyboards, John Densmore on drums, and Robby Krieger on guitar. Unless one can see, in the mind's eye, what the band is up to from the point of view of a kid in the 30th row, there's no way to really get the hypnotic, Dionysian effect for which the Doors were justifiably famous. Thus, for anyone who can imagine such a thing, or take it on faith, there's good reason to enjoy performances of "Spanish Caravan," "Five to One," and two versions of "Light My Fire." There's even a relic of pre-MTV, pop promotion: a silly-looking performance of "Hello, I Love You" shot before a baffled crowd on a London street. --Tom Keogh

Blue Valley Songbird
Blue Valley Songbird This thoroughly enjoyable 1999 television movie is an appropriately understated vehicle for country superstar Dolly Parton. Though a limited actress, Parton's key role as a saloon singer with suppressed ambitions makes for a perfect fit, neither overextending her lean thespian gifts nor inadvertently mocking her range. Parton sings, of course, yet even the hillbilly angel within yields to the script's focused tale of a love triangle involving underrated singer-songwriter Leanna (Parton), her longtime manager and boyfriend Hank (an outstanding performance by John Terry), and a restless musician (Billy Dean). Veteran director Richard A. Colla (Fuzz, Battlestar Galactica) approaches the material with grown-up sensitivity and understanding. As Jean Renoir said, everyone has their reasons, and that's certainly the case with these good people on screen. A subplot concerning Leanna's psychological mistreatment in youth by a wacked-out father is an unnecessary and redundant character note, but other than that misstep, Blue Valley Songbird is a pure pleasure. --Tom Keogh

Resolved Question: Are there any other graphic novels that I should add to this list?
I'm currently making a list of writers/artists/comic books/other recommendations for a friend of mine. He's interested in getting started with the medium as a whole, so no specific "type" of story. I've tried to give him some examples across several genres, though I have a huge lack of knowledge in the manga genre of comics. Here's what I've come up with so far. Any further recommendations would be appreciated but please add a bit as far as reasons you found them interesting/worthwhile. Comic Book Recommendations: Writers, Artists, Books, Recommendations from Others Writers: Warren Ellis (EXCELLENT writer. Authority, Stormwatch, Freakangels it's all brilliant) Alan Moore (Sometimes he's hit and miss for me, I want to read his Swamp Thing) Kurt Busiek (Not read tons, but liked his superhero stuff. Really keen to try Astro City.) Garth Ennis (Very gritty/quite violent. Enjoyed Preacher, and War is Hell) Neil Gaiman (Good stuff. Sandman has some really excellent moments) Devin Grayson (I've enjoyed some of her Batman stuff) Frank Miller (I'm not a fan of Sin City -though it's hugely popular - but some of his other stuff is excellent really liked 300) Grant Morrison (Like his mainstream style such as WE3 better than his "drug induced" writing eg Seaguy, which I thought was pants!) Mark Waid (I enjoyed his Kingdom Come books) Chuck Dixon (NOT a fan at all. I avoid books with his name.) Joseph Loeb (Don't know him well, have read a couple of his Batman books but he's decent) Robert Kirkman ("the zombie guy", has best zombie series written (Walking Dead)) J. Michael Straczynski (Excellent work on Supreme Powers) Mark Millar (Liked pretty much everything I've read of his, especially Jenny Sparks and Red Son) Artists: Have enjoyed their artwork to accompany the writers up above. Dave Gibbons Frank Quitely Dave McKean Steve Dillon John Cassaday Tom Raney Bryan Hitch Gary Frank Books: Stormwatch (first four of the series) The Authority (First two of the series) The Walking Dead (probably the best zombie comic series) Supreme Power (Excellent take on the superhero genre, definitely worth reading) WE3 (Quite a good story. I think it's being made into a film) Superman: Red Son (Superman alternate universe book - very clever, worth owning) Batman: Year One (enjoyable read even for non-batman fans) Batman: The Dark Knight Returns ( Buy it, read it, love it... great book) Maus I & II (serious, moving, and very well written by Art Spiegelman) Mouse Guard (David Petersen was writer, it's kid safe, very cute, and well done. Enjoyable read for all ages) Arkham Asylum (this one is very hit and miss for people. I enjoyed it and it's well worth having a look at it.) All Star Superman (To me this is the Dark Knight Returns of the Superman world. Keep your eye on this one. Really enjoyed it) Recess Pieces (Very funny but gory... Tagline George Romero gave us Night, Dawn and Day of the Dead but what about.... Recess.) Marvel 1602 (alternate timeline; heroes are born in 'ye olde England' rather than contemporary USA) Year One: Batman/Ra's Al Ghul (One of the Grayson books I enjoyed) La Perdida (Not a "happy" book, and the characters aren't overly likable, but it's intereating.) Persepolis (Interesting take and use of the genre. Being made into a film.) Recommendations from Other Graphic Novel Nuts I know: Queen and Country by Greg Rucka Bone (many people recommend this one and I'm keen to have a peek) 100 Bullets (Everyone I've talked to loves this one, it's going to be the next series I purchase) B.R.P.D. (Supposed to be quite good, but fans of the books don't generally like the Hellboy Films) Y The Last Man (Again, supposed to be a good series and I've had several people recommend it) Fables (Read a few of these, enjoyed 'em. Dunno if that's enough for me to want to own them) Concrete (supposedly quirky environmental message - if I remember the recommendation right) So go for it, I'd love to have a big list for my mate to choose from and I'd love to see what you folks come up with for future recommendations for myself as well. Cheers, R (more...)

Resolved Question: Wrestling fans getting lazy?
Why is it that if I ask a question more then 2 sentences long I hardly get any answers at all. But if I was to ask a question like.." Is John Cena uber awesome!?" I'd get like 30. Are people getting so lazy that they can't bother to read a simple paragraph? Is the art of reading really dead? WQ: Is John Morrison the next Shawn Michaels? (more...)

Resolved Question: Hey R&P, I need your help with my art portfolio!?
I have to do a series of three pictures for art class. For the recurring theme, I chose rock music. So far I have a pretty generic looking black and white picture of Jim Morrison and a really weird, avant garde drawing of Dorothy and Toto under the light spectrum from DSotM, meant to represent the Dark Side of the Rainbow effect. What should my final picture be? Ooh, Ladytron, good idea. I think I'll do an Andy Warhol-esque thing of the Jim Morrison. Thanks! (more...)

Voting Question: Help! Strange Dream...?
Someone a have a huge crush on (I don't mean a crush based on nothing, I mean we're interested in the same music, art, movies, philosophy, some of the things he says sound like I could have said them), anyway in my dream he died, he killed himself, and I was there with my friends while he did it, I want to stop him so bad but I was afraid of what my friends would think, I was also seperate from the group, nobody else was sad but it was literally like my heart was glass and someone droped it, I'm not just using this as an experssion, I wasn't crying or anything but my best friend came over to consol me, and my eyes were red and puffy as if I was crying, but I didn't until I was away from them also it was like she didn't even care. Then I just kept walking on the beach, thinking of all the things I wanted to tell him, he barely knows anything about me, it was so horrible, so horrible I can't even discribe it. Anyways I walked into this room eventually it was a bathroom and it was all white. So I sat down and just kept crying. Finally I walked out of the room, and I walked into a forest, and he started walking towards me I ran towards him and gave him a hug and started crying again, I was so angry but I didn't get mad at him. The rest of the dream we were walking down the beach, and I had my arms around him. I should add that I curently have a boyfriend, not that I like him too much. My crush had a Jim Morrison haircut, and we are both huge fans of The Doors, but he dosen't know that I am. I'm thinking of using this idea in a story so please don't steal it. I already posted this question in a different category, but I wanted some other opinions. (more...)
